Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling or aryl halides is widely employed in the synthesis of many important molecules in synthetic chemistry, including pharmaceuticals, polymers and functional materials. Herein, we disclose the first palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of amides for the synthesis of biaryls through the selective activation of the N-C(O) bond of amides. This new method relies on the precise sequence engineering of the catalytic cycle, wherein decarbonylation occurs prior to the transmetallation step. The reaction is compatible with a wide range of boronic acids and amides, providing valuable biaryls in high yields (>60 examples). DFT studies support a mechanism involving oxidative addition, decarbonylation and transmetallation and provide insight into high N-C(O) bond activation selectivity. Most crucially, the reaction establishes the use of palladium catalysis in the biaryl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of the amide bond and should enable the design of a wide variety of cross-coupling methods in which palladium rivals the traditional biaryl synthesis from aryl halides and pseudohalides.

Abstract:The biaryl motif is a building block in many drugs, agrochemicals, and materials, and as such it is highly desirable as a synthesis target. The state-of-the-art process for biaryl synthesis from ubiquitous carboxylic acids is decarboxylative cross-coupling involving loss of carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the scope of these methods is severely limited, mainly due to specific substitution required to promote decarboxylation. The present report implements a decarbonylative version with loss of carbon monoxide (CO) that enables to directly engage carboxylic acids in a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling to produce biaryls as a general method with high cross-coupling selectivity using a well-defined Pd(0)/(II) catalytic cycle. This protocol shows a remarkably broad scope (>80 examples) and is performed in the absence of exogenous inorganic bases. In a broader context, the approach shows promise for routine applications in the synthesis of biaryls by carefully controlled decarbonylation of prevalent carboxylic acids.

Abstract:A series of novel N,N'-bisaryl bis(NHC) (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) precursors 5a-e, 12a-d, and 13a-c and their palladium complexes 14a-e, 15a-d, and 16a,b with (1R,2R)-cyclohexene and (1R,2R)-diphenylethylene linkers have been designed, synthesized in good yields, and fully characterized by NMR, HRMS, and elemental analysis. The X-ray single crystal analysis of 15a showed that these complexes adopted a slightly distorted square-planar geometry around the Pd(II) center. These N,N'-bisaryl-bis(NHC)-Pd complexes exhibit excellent catalytic activity in asymmetric aryl aryl cross-coupling reactions of arylboronic acids and aryl halides. The axial chiral biaryl compounds could be achieved in high yields (up to 74%) and good enantioselectivities (up to 60% ee) within 24 h. The results show that for this kind of bis(NHC) palladium catalysts the structure characteristics of the chiral linkers have decisive effect on the enantioselectivities of cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract:In past decades, palladium-catalyzed direct selective C-H bonds functionalization has become a highly attractive strategy in organic synthesis and represents a highly desirable goal. This review introduces three extensively investigated modes for forming C-C bonds from C-H bonds via palladium catalysis; cross-coupling reactions of C-H bonds with aryl or alkyl halides/pseudohalides, cross-dehydrogenative couplings of two C-H bonds, and cross-coupling reactions of C-H bonds with organometallic reagents. A comprehensive summary of recent advances and detailed analysis on the versatility and practicality of these transformations are presented. The research trend for this strategy is also prospected.

Abstract:N-(3-Chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)-N'-arylimidazolium salts (aryl = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl [HL1Cl]Cl, aryl = mesityl [HL2Cl]Cl) have been synthesized by treating 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline with the corresponding N'-arylimidazole in neat water. Facile reactions of these imidazolium salts with Pd(PPh3)4 and Pd2(dba)3/PPh3 (dba = dibenzyledene acetone) at 50 °C have afforded zwitterionic palladium(ii) complexes [Pd(HL1)(PPh3)Cl2] (I) and [Pd(HL2)(PPh3)Cl2] (II) in excellent yields. I and II have been tested for their ability to catalyze Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling (SMC) reactions in neat water/K2CO3 and are found to be highly active for carrying out these reactions between aryl bromides and organoboron reagents. Furthermore, the scope of the catalyst I was also examined by employing (hetero)aryl bromides, hydrophilic aryl bromides, benzyl bromides and various organoboron reagents. More than 80 aryl/benzyl bromide-arylboronic acid combinations were screened in neat water/K2CO3 and it was found that I was a versatile catalyst, which produced biaryls/diarylmethanes in excellent yields. A TON of 82 000 was achieved by using I. Studies on the mechanism have also been carried out to investigate the involvement of carbene complexes in the catalytic path. Poison tests and a two-phase test were also conducted and the results are reported.

Abstract:A new series of xylyl-linked bis-benzimidazolium salts were efficiently prepared using a simple preparation method from bis-benzimidazolium precursors featuring highly tunable linkers and wingtips. A highly efficient Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of aryl chlorides within the range of 0.5–2.0 mol% Pd-catalyst loading was observed. Also, di-ortho-substituted biaryl synthesis was achieved.

Abstract:Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reaction by palladium (Pd) catalysis is widely used in cross-coupling chemistry synthesis for C-C bond formation, yet the biaryl products are generally lacking halo substituents due to highly active palladium species. Suitable catalysts according to this property for the regionselective SMC synthesis of biaryl derivatives with halo substituents did not receive due and sufficient attention. Here, we report the facile synthesis of a covalent organic frameworks (COFs)supported nanoparticles Pd catalyst that can region-selectively catalyze the SMC reaction of aryl boronic acids and aryl halides, especially with halogenated aryl boronic acids. The methodology exhibits mild operating conditions, broad functional group tolerance, and environmental friendliness and can be strategically applied for cross-coupling scenarios governed by sequential transition metal catalysts to build with or without a halo-substituted moiety. The Pd/COF-SMC nanoparticles catalysts are stable and reusable and succeed in synthesizing halo-substituted biaryl products in excellent yield, which avoids the homocoupling of halogenated aryl boronic acid. The most outstanding advantage is the precise regulation of nanoparticles Pd activity with the well-designed COF ligand.

Abstract:[Ag-4(L)(4)](PF6)(4) and [Pd(L)(2)](PF6)(2) (L = 3-(2,4-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyrid-7-yl)-l-picolylimidazolylidene) have been prepared and fully characterized. The silver compound consists of a Ag-4 ring with short Ag-Ag contacts displaying a butterfly conformation. The palladium complex exhibits a helical structure with palladium located in a square-planar environment with two carbene ligands and two pyridines in a cis arrangement. The palladium complex has proven to be a highly efficient catalyst for Heck coupling reactions of aryl bromides with n-butyl acrylate. TON values up to 10(6) and TOF values up to 5 x 10(5) h(-1) can be achieved.

Abstract:A simple method for one-pot sequential Heck/Suzuki coupling reactions of a range of substituted aryl dihalides has been described. The Pd(OAc)2/imidazolium system catalyzed double coupling reactions proceed without isolation of the intermediates giving unsymmetrically polysubstituted biphenyls in good to excellent yields. Further couplings of the resultant products bearing additional C–Cl bonds with substituted arylboronic acids or amines lead to unsymmetrical terphenyls and aminobiphenyl derivatives.

Abstract:Axially chiral biaryls exist widely in bioactive natural products and auxiliary ligands for homogeneous catalysis. The particular spatial arrangement of the two aromatic rings in the specific space determines their unique properties; therefore, how to effectively control their absolute configuration is the key issue. Within the last decade, the synthesis of axially chiral biaryls has been a research topic of great interest. Asymmetric biaryl coupling controlled by chiral palladium catalysts was first reported in 2000 and has greatly advanced the chemistry of transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Most notably, some novel chiral auxiliary ligands such as ferrocene- or biaryl backbone-containing monophosphine, bisphosphines, bis-hydrazones, hydrazone-phosphines, diene and NHC ligands have been applied to this reaction. At the same time a broad range of aryl electrophiles such as phenols, aryl ethers, esters, carbonates, carbamates, sulfamates, phosphates, phosphoramides, phosphonium salts, and fluorides can now be coupled efficiently with boron reagents to afford functionalized axially chiral biaryl products with good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities in the presence of chiral palladium catalysts. In this review, we would like to summarize three main categories of chiral catalysts with discussion of their advantages and limitation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Herein, we report the first general C(sp<sup>2</sup>)-C(sp<sup>2</sup>) reductive cross-coupling reaction of diverse triarylphosphines with a wide range of aryl halides by palladium/nickel co-catalysis. This protocol offers a unique route for the synthesis of biaryl compounds via the activation of inert C(Ar)-P bonds. The mechanistic studies demonstrate that the formation of the phosphonium salts in situ plays a key role in the catalytic cycle.
