Abstract:A novel method for the construction of allyl arylsulfone derivatives was developed by palladium catalyzed allylation of sulfonyl hydrazides with alkynes. A series of structurally diverse allyl arylsulfones can be regioselectively synthesized in high yields under mild conditions.

Abstract:We report herein the copper- and palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling reactions of alkynyl carboxylic acids and N-tosylhydrazones, affording trisubstituted allenes and conjugated enynes, respectively. With readily available alkynyl carboxylic acids as the acetylene surrogates, the new strategies are operationally simple and show good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:Although numerous transition-metal catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of alkenyl electrophiles with a sulfur(VI) leaving group, mainly alkenyl sulfones, have been developed, most rely heavily on highly nucleophilic Grignard reagents, and the use of organoboron reagents remains challenging. We report herein facile preparation and the following Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of alkenyl sulfoximine, a monoaza analog of sulfone. The condensation of alkyl sulfoximine with aldehydes, developed in this study, makes alkenyl sulfoximines more readily available. The resulting alkenes undergo an unprecedented oxidative addition of the C–S bond to the Pd center. This cross-coupling proceeds with retention of its original stereochemistry and provided alkenes bearing three different functionalities in a stereoselective fashion. DFT calculations highlight the critical role of boronic acid, rather than boronic ester, in facilitating this transformation.

Abstract:A palladium catalyzed multicomponent cross-electrophile coupling involving sulfur dioxide under a metal-reductant free condition is presented here. Both aryl-alkyl and alkyl-alkyl sulfones could be successfully achieved. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that two Pd catalytic cycles are involved and SO2 exclusively coupled with aryl iodides rather than allylic acetates, which are consistent with the DFT studies.

Abstract:A one‐pot Pd‐catalyzed tandem process to prepare (2‐arylallyl) aryl sulfones has been developed. This strategy is based on the modular assembly of a boronic acid, a sodium sulfinate and 2‐bromoallyl acetate. The reaction is completely regioselective towards the terminal alkene, yielding (2‐arylallyl) aryl (or alkyl) sulfones with yields ranging from 56 to 93%. Control experiments together with DFT calculations allowed to propose a plausible reaction mechanism of the tandem reaction. The usefulness of this methodology has been demonstrated with the formal synthesis of the marketed drug Apremilast and of several natural products by asymmetric hydrogenation. Using the commercially available UbaPHOX iridium complex, chiral β‐methyl sulfones with up to 98% ee were obtained

Abstract:A facile route to synthesise N-aminosulfonamides through a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction of aryl nonaflates, sulfur dioxide, and hydrazines is reported. This transformation proceeds in the presence of Pd(OAc)2/XantPhos, and TBAB in 1,4-dioxane at 80 °C, leading to the corresponding N-aminosulfonamides in moderate to good yields. The reaction scope has been demonstrated, and good functional tolerance is observed. A plausible mechanism is proposed through the insertion of sulfur dioxide.

Abstract:In this chapter, alkene synthesis based on the reaction of N-tosylhydrazones is described. The reactivity of tosylhydrazones is determined by either the acidity of α-proton and hydrazone proton or the electropositivity of the carbon of C=N bond. This leads to diverse reactivities and a series of N-tosylhydrazone-based olefination methodologies. Both non-catalytic and transition metal-catalyzed olefinations from N-tosylhydrazones are introduced in this chapter. Most of the transition metal-catalyzed reactions proceed via metal carbene transformations. The synthesis of alkenes through Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of N-tosylhydrazones is particularly attractive and will be discussed in detail.

Abstract:An electrochemically enabled C(sp3)-C(sp) cross-coupling reaction is herein described for the synthesis of internal alkynes. This method is suitable not only to a diverse of acetylenic sulfones, but also to a wide range of alkyl radical precursors, such as alkyl iodides, N-hydroxyphthalimide esters and Katritzky salts. This reaction can also be applied to vinylation, thioetherification, selenation and hydrogenation reactions. This reaction shows a lot of significant advantages such as mild conditions, broad functional group tolerance, simple operation and convenience of purification and enlargement.
