Abstract:Triflic acid-catalyzed direct oxidative lactonization of alkenoic acids mediated solely by NaIO4 without halogen salts is described. Sodium periodate works not only as an oxidant, but also as an active reagent and directly mediates the lactonization. A new cheap, green, and practical oxidative lactonization approach has been developed using NaIO4 as the sole reagent.

Abstract:A photocatalytic acyl lactonization of unsaturated carboxylic acids using simple and inexpensive acyl chlorides has been developed for a modular synthesis of acyl lactones. Significantly, the simple protocol could allow an efficient construction of biologically important phthalide framework. The transformation could be extended to a wide variety of unsaturated carboxylic acids, including substituted 2‐vinyl benzoic acids and different types of alkenoic acids. Moreover, a series of aroyl, heteroaroyl chlorides could serve as coupling partners. Notably, functional groups including MeO, F, Cl and Br could survive. It is believed that acyl radicals generated from acyl chlorides under photoredox catalysis reacted with alkenes via atom‐transfer radical addition (ATRA) and triggered subsequent lactonization in the process. Preliminary mechanistic investigations revealed that the transformation probably proceed through a free radical pathway.

Abstract:A facile chlorolactonization of alkenoic acids by treatment with diphenyl sulfoxide/oxalyl chloride has been developed. The reaction can generate various chlorolactones in moderate to good yields, wherein the chlorodiphenylsufonium salt derived from diphenyl sulfoxide/oxalyl chloride serves as the source of Cl+.

Abstract:An efficient method for the oxidative decarboxylation of arylacetic acids and arylacetic esters using trans-5-hydroperoxy-3,5-dimethyl-1,2-dioxolane-3-yl ethaneperoxate in combination with KOH as base is reported. The decarboxylation of carboxylic acids and their derivatives was efficiently achieved with singlet molecular oxygen. Singlet molecular oxygen was produced in situ from the fragmentation of the trans-5-hydroperoxy-3,5-dimethyl-1,2-dioxolane-3-yl ethaneperoxate in the presence of KOH, and it has been explored as an effective oxidant for oxidative decarboxylation of arylacetic acids. Further investigation showed that the reaction also permits the synthesis of aromatic ketones by oxidative decarboxylation of arylacetic esters.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Due to its unique electronic properties, the difluoromethylene group (CF2) has served as a valuable unity in the design of biologically active molecules. Since γ‐lactones display a broad range of biological properties, α, α‐difluoro‐γ‐lactones may exhibit unexpected biological activities, and thus their synthesis has received increasing attention. Traditional synthetic methods suffer from tedious multi‐step processes, and very few effective methods have been reported recently. Herein we describe the difunctionalization of alkenes with BrCF2CO2K under photoredox catalysis with the use of a boron‐Lewis acid for the access to α, α‐difluoro‐γ‐lactones. In this transformation, the alkene substrates and the used reagents, including BrCF2CO2K and the boron‐Lewis acid, PhB(OH)2 or BF3.THF, are cheap and widely available. Abstract:An aerobic acetoxyhydroxylation of alkenes cooperatively catalyzed by organic nitrite and palladium at room temperature using clean and cheap air as the sole oxidant has been developed. Various vicinal diols, diacetoxyalkanes, and dihalogenoalkanes have been synthesized. The gram-scale synthesis has also been approached. Vicinal difluorination and dichlorolation products have also been achieved via this reaction.
The Direct Pd-Catalyzed γ-Lactonization of Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids

Abstract:A direct palladium-catalyzed γ-lactonization of free carboxylic acids via C–O reductive elimination as a key step is described. Notable aspects of this protocol include the use of convenient and easily available sodium percarbonate as an oxidant and the development of a new beta-alanine derived ligand. The reported method enables the functionalization of a wide range of aliphatic acids including previously inaccessible β-non-quaternary acids. The regioselectivity and consequently substrate scope of this protocol proved complementary to established routes for the direct lactonization of aliphatic carboxylic acids. A modification of this method furthermore enables a direct β-C(sp3)–H hydroxylation of challenging α-non-quaternary carboxylic acids with considerable functional group tolerance. Through this report valuable compound libraries of γ-lactones and β-hydroxy acids with potential applications in various fields become available.

Abstract:The oxidation of primary alcohols and aldehydes to the corresponding carboxylic acids is a fundamental reaction in organic synthesis. In this paper, we report a new chemoselective process for the oxidation of primary alcohols and aldehydes.
