Abstract:A novel disordered laser crystal Nd: Sr3La2(BO3)(4) is characterized including its crystal growth, structure, thermal properties, inhomogeneously broadened spectra, and laser performance, which result that this crystal should be a promising gain material for the high-power ultrashort pulsed neodymium laser. The complete set of anisotropic thermal properties were systematically studied for the first time. It has been found that all the thermal conductivities along the three crystallographic directions increase with temperature, indicating a glass-like behavior. Polarized absorption and fluorescence spectra of Nd: Sr3La2(BO3)(4) crystal were measured at 298.15 K and 77.2 K, respectively. The results show that both the absorption and the emission spectra of Nd3+ have been inhomogeneously broadened, and thus it is very promising to be used in laser systems to produce femtosecond pulses. CW laser operations at 1.06 mu m along the b-cut and c-cut directions have been demonstrated for the first time. A maximum power of 533mW with an optical conversion efficiency of 5.5% and slope efficiency of 6.4% was achieved in the c-cut sample. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nd3+:Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) single crystal of sized empty set20 mm x 20 mm was grown by the Czochralski technique. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ in Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystals was measured tribe 1.147. A series of thermal properties, including specific heat, the average linear thermal expansion coefficient, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, were systematically determined as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity along a, b and c-axes increases with increasing temperature. The room temperature polarized absorption spectrum was obtained over the range of 330-1000 nm, together with the room temperature fluorescence spectrum. The spectral parameters of the crystal were calculated by using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory. The fluorescence lifetime is 80.58 mu s and the fluorescence quantum efficiency is eta(c) = 43.8%. A large FWHM value, moderate absorption cross-section and high thermal conductivity show that Nd3+:Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystal holds promise as a useful solid state laser material. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Nd3+:Gd1-xLaxCa4O(BO3)(3) crystals (where x = 0.16 and 0.33) have been grown successfully by the Czochralski method. The grown Nd3+:Gd1-xLaxCa4O(BO3)(3) crystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and spectral analysis. The investigation shows that when the La3+ were partly substituted for the Gd3+ in Nd3+:GdCOB crystals to form Nd3+:Gd1-xLaxCa4O(BO3)(3) crystals, the La3+ ion did not affect the basic physical properties of the crystals, but improved the thermal and spectroscopic properties of the crystals, which is helpful to improve the laser performance of Nd3+:GdCOB crystals.

Abstract:A disordered Nd:SrLaGaO4 (Nd:SLG) laser crystal was successfully grown via the Czochralski (CZ) technique. The crystal structure, refractive index, polarized absorption spectra, and stimulated emission spectra were measured. The spectroscopic properties were studied intensively with the Judd–Ofelt (J-O) theory. The maximum absorption cross sections of π- and σ-polarization at 806 nm were calculated to be 3.73 × 10−20 and 4.05 × 10−20 cm2, corresponding to FWHMs of 6.00 and 6.10 nm, respectively. The maximum emission cross sections of π- and σ-polarization at 1076 nm were 3.97 × 10−20 and 4.12 × 10−20 cm2, with FWHMs of 30.21 and 19.44 nm, respectively. The decay life of the Nd3+:4F3/2 energy level was fitted to be 0.152 ms, and the fluorescence quantum efficiency was 72.72%. The inhomogeneous broadening in spectra benefiting from the disordered structure indicates the Nd:SLG crystal is a promising gain medium for ultrafast laser and tunable laser generations in the near infrared region.

Abstract:A bulk Nd:LaCa4O(BO3)(3) (Nd:LaCOB) single crystal with the low Nd3+-doping concentration (-0.5 at%) was grown by Czochralski (Cz) method. Its powder X-ray diffraction, Nd3+ ions doping concentration, polarized transmittance and emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetimes were tested. Based on the Judd-Ofelt theory, the spectral parameters of Nd:LaCOB (Nd3+,-0.5 at %) crystals including polarized absorption and emission cross sections, spontaneous transition probability, fluorescence branching ratio, theoretical fluorescence lifetime and intensity parameters (omega(2), omega(4) and omega(6)) were systemically investigated. The calculated radiation lifetimes were compared with the experimental values, resulting in a quantum yield of 33%, which was the highest record among all the Nd:ReCOB (Re: Y, Gd, La1- xGdx) type crystals. The spectral properties of Nd:LaCOB were found to be better than those of Nd:YCOB and Nd:GdCOB crystals, especially in polarized absorption and emission cross sections. The self-frequency-doubling (SFD) angles were calculated according to the main fluorescence peaks of Nd:LaCOB (Nd3+,-0.5 at%) crystals such as 1041 nm, 1060 nm, 1090 nm and 1102 nm, which would be excited and frequency doubled into blue-green, green, yellow-green and yellow lasers. All the results showed that the Nd:LaCOB crystals had potential applications in the field of laser and SFD.

Abstract:A novel mixed laser crystal of Nd:GdLaNbO4 (Nd:GLNO) was grown successfully by conventional Czochralski method. The unit cell parameters were obtained by Rietveld refinement method. The density of the as-grown crystal was measured by Archimedean buoyancy method and calculated in theory. Absorption spectrum of Nd:GLNO crystal was recorded at room temperature, and 11 absorption peaks were assigned. The defects of Nd:GLNO crystal were revealed by using chemical etching method with phosphoric acid as etchant. The mechanical properties (including hardness, yield strength, elastic stiffness constant, fracture toughness and brittleness index) were systemically estimated based on Vickers hardness test. All these obtained results play a quite important role in further investigation of Nd:GLNO crystal.

Abstract:An Nd3+-doped Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal with dimensions up to 32 x 20 x 14 mm(3) has been grown by the TSSG method. The Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal crystallizes in the monoclinic system with the space group C2/c. The unit cell parameters are a = 5.181(2) angstrom, b = 12.677(7) angstrom, c = 19.161(10) angstrom, beta = 92.237(13)degrees and Z = 2. The Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal has a high structure disorder. The spectral properties of Nd3+-doped Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal exhibited broad absorption and emission bands, which are caused by the disordered structure of the Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal. Therefore, it may be regarded as a laser host material for diode laser pumping.

Abstract:A disordered Nd:BaLaGa3O7 laser crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ in BaLaGa3O7 crystals was measured to be 1.12. A series of thermal properties, including specific heat, average linear thermal expansion coefficient, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, were systematically determined as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity increased with increasing temperature. The polarized absorption and emission spectra were measured at room temperature. Nd:BaLaGa3O7 possessed a large absorption bandwidth of 18 nm at 808 nm and an emission bandwidth of 32 nm at 1060 nm. According to the Judd–Ofelt theory, the spontaneous transition probabilities, the fluorescence branching ratios, and the radiation lifetime were calculated. The stimulated emission cross section for the4F3/2 → 4I11/2 transition was calculated to be 4.24 × 10−20 cm2. Thermal and optical properties have shown that Nd:BaLaGa3O7 crystals are potential alternative gain media for ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:A high quality disordered Yb:Ca3La2(BO3)(4) laser crystal has been successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The complete set of anisotropic thermal properties were systematically measured for the first time. In addition, continuous-wave laser along the three crystallographic axis were obtained. Passively Q-switched by a Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber, the laser yielded an average output power of 0.47 W with a slope efficiency of 7.6% for the first time. The generated pulse energy, duration, and peak power were 94 mu J, 33 ns, and 2.85 KW, respectively. We believe that the reliability and stability of these lasers makes the disordered Yb:Ca3La2(BO3)(4) crystal of considerable interest for future applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Detailed polarized spectral properties of a 0.685 at. % Nd3+:Sr3Y2(BO3)(4) crystal grown by the Czochralski method have been investigated, including the absorption cross section, the emission cross section, and the fluorescence lifetime. The anisotropy of the spectral properties in different polarized directions was discussed thoroughly. The absorption and emission spectra of Nd3+ are found to be in-homogeneously broadened due to its internal disordered lattice. Additionally, the CW laser operation at 1.06 mu m was also demonstrated for the first time. Abstract:The undoped and the Nd(3+):KBaGd(WO(4))(3) crystals were grown by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method from a flux of K(2)W(2)O(7). The structure of the pure crystal was determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. It crystallizes in the monoclinic symmetry with space group C2/c. In the structure, K(+) and Ba(2+) ions share the same 8f site with occupancy of 0.464 and 0.536, respectively. The investigation of spectral properties of Nd(3+):KBaGd(WO(4))(3) crystal indicates that it exhibits broad absorption and emission bands, which are attributed to locally disordered environments around the Nd(3+) centers. The broad absorption band is suitable for diode laser pumping.

Abstract:A new disordered crystal of Nd3+-doped CaLaGa3O7 (Nd: CLGO) was successfully grown using the Czochralski method for the first time. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions in CLGO was calculated to be 0.68. A systematic investigation of the crystal structure characteristics, fluorescence lifetime, polarized absorption spectra, and emission spectra of Nd: CLGO crystal at room temperature was reported. The maximal absorption cross-sections at 808 nm were 3.18 and 1.34 × 10−20 cm2 for π-polarization and σ-polarization with an FWHM of 16 and 10 nm, respectively, indicating the good pumping efficiency of laser diodes (LDs). The emission cross-sections at 1061 nm of π- and σ-polarization were 7.23 and 6.90 × 10−20 cm2 with an FWHM of 18.8 and 27.8 nm, respectively. Moreover, the measured fluorescence lifetime was 250 μs? Based on the spectral parameters, several important laser parameters were calculated to assess the laser capability. The above results indicate that Nd: CLGO crystal is a promising disordered laser host with AlGaAs LD pumping, and is suitable for generating ultrashort pulse lasers.

Abstract:A Yb3+: Y0.8La0.2Ca4O(BO3)(3) crystal with the dimensions of phi 16 x 20 mm has been grown by the Czochralski method. The absorption and emission cross-sections of the Yb3+: Y0.8La0.2Ca4O(BO3)(3) crystals are 1.37 x 10(-20) cm(2) at 977 nm and 0.64 x 10(-20) cm(2) at 1033 nm respectively, which are larger than that of Yb3+: YCa4O(BO3)(4) and Yb3+: GdCa4O(BO3)(4) crystals. It shows that the spectroscopic properties of Yb3+: Y0.8La0.2Ca4O(BO3)(4) crystal can be improved by substituting the part La3+ ions for the Y3+ ions in YCa4O(BO3)(4) to form mixed YxLa1-xCa4O(BO3)(3).

Abstract:A novel laser crystal Nd3+-doped yttrium barium phosphate (Nd:YBa3(PO4)3, hereafter Nd:YBP) with disordered crystal structure was reported. Single crystal growth, thermal, spectral and laser performances were investigated. The thermal conductivity at room temperature was found to be 1.35 W·m−1·K−1 and shown an increased tendency with increased temperature. The spontaneous transition probabilities, radiation lifetime and other parameters were evaluated by using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory. The maximum absorption and emission cross sections for Nd:YBP crystal were obtained to be ∼ 2.32 × 10−20 cm2 (@ 804 nm) and 6.72 × 10−20 cm2 (@ 1056 nm), respectively. The measured fluorescence lifetime for Nd:YBP crystal was equal to 351 μs. Furthermore, diode-pumped continuous-wave laser operation was firstly realized near 1060 nm. The slope efficiency was found to be approximately 22% and the maximum output power for Nd:YBP crystal was 256 mW. Results reveal that the disordered crystal Nd:YBP might be further optimized for uses in laser field.

Abstract:Through the partial substitution of Y3+ ions with La3+ ions in the structural framework of YCa4O(BO3)3, the Yb3+-doped mixed oxyborate Y1−xLaxCa4O(BO3)3 (x = 0.09 and 0.25) crystals have been grown and characterized. The La3+ content (x = 0.25) in the crystal far exceeds the La3+ doping limit (x = 0.1) previously reported, whereas the crystal remains transparent and free from cracks. Optical absorption, emission and fluorescence decay measurements have been performed at room temperature, and the influence of La3+ doping on the spectroscopic characteristics of the crystals has been presented and discussed in detail. The main spectral and laser parameters pertinent to laser potential have been evaluated and compared with those of other oxyborates. The perspectives for application of the Yb3+:Y1−xLaxCa4O(BO3)3 crystals as laser media have been discussed.

Abstract:A Nd-doped GdNbO4 single crystals have been grown successfully using the Czochralski technique. The chemical etching method was employed to study the defects in the structural morphology of Nd:GdNbO4 crystal with phosphoric acid etchant. Mechanical properties (such as hardness, yield strength, fracture toughness, and brittle index) of the as-grown crystal were systematically estimated on the basis of the Vickers hardness test for the first time. The transmission spectrum of Nd:GdNbO4 was measured in the wavelength range of 320–2400 nm at room temperature, and the absorption peaks were assigned. Results hold great significance for further research on Nd:GdNbO4.
