Abstract:New advances in palladium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions are reviewed. The reactions include aerobic oxidation of alcohol, kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols, oxidation of alkenes, oxidative C-O, C-N and C-C bond formation reactions, oxidative ring opening, expansion and contracting reactions. In addition, the mechanisms of these novel reactions are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Electrooxidation has emerged as an increasingly viable platform in molecular syntheses that can avoid stoichiometric chemical redox agents. Despite major progress in electrochemical C-H activations, these arene functionalizations generally require directing groups to enable the C-H activation. The installation and removal of these directing groups call for additional synthesis steps, which jeopardizes the inherent efficacy of the electrochemical C-H activation approach, leading to undesired waste with reduced step and atom economy. In sharp contrast, herein we present palladium-electrochemical C-H olefinations of simple arenes devoid of exogenous directing groups. The robust electrocatalysis protocol proved amenable to a wide range of both electron-rich and electron-deficient arenes under exceedingly mild reaction conditions, avoiding chemical oxidants. This study points to an interesting approach of two electrochemical transformations for the success of outstanding levels of position-selectivities in direct olefinations of electron-rich anisoles. A physical organic parameter-based machine learning model was developed to predict position-selectivity in electrochemical C-H olefinations. Furthermore, late-stage functionalizations set the stage for the direct C-H olefinations of structurally complex pharmaceutically relevant compounds, thereby avoiding protection and directing group manipulations.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed olefin epoxidation reaction was developed using electrophilic reagents as oxidants. The modular synthesis of various alkyl alcohols, alkyl esters, and alkyl halides was achieved in good to excellent yields. These products can be used to synthesize potential drug ibuprofen derivatives. A preliminary mechanistic study shows that SN2 attack by the nucleophilic reagents in the system creates the final C–O bond and an SN1 reaction of halide ions creates a C–X bond.

Abstract:Esters are bulk and fine chemicals and ubiquitous in polymers, bioactive compounds, and natural products. Their traditional synthetic approach is the esterification of carboxylic acids or their activated derivatives with alcohols. Herein, a bimetallic relay catalytic protocol was developed for the aerobic esterification of one alcohol in the presence of a slowly oxidizing alcohol, which has been identified as methanol. A concise synthesis of phlomic acid was executed to demonstrate the practicality and potential of this reaction.

Abstract:An aerobic acetoxyhydroxylation of alkenes cooperatively catalyzed by organic nitrite and palladium at room temperature using clean and cheap air as the sole oxidant has been developed. Various vicinal diols, diacetoxyalkanes, and dihalogenoalkanes have been synthesized. The gram-scale synthesis has also been approached. Vicinal difluorination and dichlorolation products have also been achieved via this reaction.

Abstract:An efficient direct oxidation method was developed to oxidize some aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes to esters by the dual utilization of NaIO4 and Pd-C. At ambient conditions, various aldehydes were employed in a clean esterification reaction to afford numerous esters in good to excellent yields. By this adopted method, some multifunctional aldehydes, high-energy-containing aromatic and unsaturated aldehydes, were advantageously oxidized to esters without noticeable difficulties. Moreover, no over-oxidation occurred to alcohols, and mostly by products were not formed during this oxidation process. Conventional and some modern methods lag behind owing to their easier operability and easy work-up process. This investigation has proven that the required oxidant (NaIO 4 ) or catalyst (Pd-C) is useless to employ in excess, although some current methods utilize hugely expensive reagents for such conversions. Mundane reaction set-up, easy product recovery technique, nontoxic catalyst, and cheap and available starting materials are the noteworthy advantages of this method.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed alkene arylalkoxylation is a powerful complexity-building strategy for the synthesis of oxygen heterocycles from simple γ-unsaturated alcohols, but only a few examples of catalytic enantioselective methods exist. Herein, an efficient palladium-catalyzed enantioselective arylalkoxylation of γ-hydroxyalkenes with aryl halides is reported. The salient features of this transformation include a remarkable broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and good functional group tolerance, delivering a series of chiral tetrahydrofurans containing a tertiary or quaternary stereocenter in good yields with up to 95% ee. The Xu10 ligand with a suitable side-arm was responsible for the high reactivity and good enantioselectivity of this transformation.

Abstract:The advancement of sustainable chemistry and changes in the economy are strongly intertwined. Reaction time, cost savings, moderate temperatures, and generation of the fewest byproducts are frequently achieved by using catalytic processes. Herein, we report the C‐H olefination of imidazo[1,2a] pyridine carboxamides with various acrylates in the presence of Pd(OAc)2 with O2 as the oxidant in aqueous ethanol rather than using non‐ecofriendly solvents. The C‐H activation features most user‐friendly reaction conditions, excellent yield as well as plenty substrate scope and applicable for C‐H deuteriation of the corresponding heteroarenes with D2O. Experimental mechanistic studies indicate that C‐H activation step succeeded after formation of tetra coordinated square planer Pd‐substrate adduct.
