Abstract:CuI-nanoparticles-catalyzed cyanation of aryl bromides under mild conditions has been developed with K4[Fe(CN)6]as the cyanation reagent using water as the solvent in the presence of KI and N,N'-dimethylethyl-enediamine.This method was applicable to a wide range of substrates and more economical and environmentally friendly.

Abstract:The natural compound beta-cyclodextrin supported copper complex (CuI@beta-CD) was prepared and employed as catalyst for an Ullmann-type C-N coupling reaction of N-nucleophiles and aryl halides under mild conditions. Reactions with different substrates were examined, and moderate to excellent yields were obtained. In addition to the high efficiency, the reaction system is also noticeable due to the excellent recoverability and reusability of the catalyst.

Abstract:A green and efficient catalytic system has been developed for the Cu-catalyzed Ullmann-type C-N coupling reactions in water. With CuI as catalyst, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-beta-D-glucopyranosylamine as ligand, aryl iodides and aryl bromides bearing various electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups could be coupled with N-nucleophiles in water with good yields (61%similar to 96%). The catalytic system was expanded successfully to the reaction of indoles with 4-iodoanisole in water.

Abstract:Three different types of functionalized-CS were prepared and anchored with copper salts for use as the catalyst for the Ullmann C-X coupling reaction. The Schiff-basic chitosan supported copper complex (PCCS@CuI) exhibits the highest catalytic activity. The structure of the catalyst was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TG, XRD, SEM, EDS and XPS. This catalyst exhibited high applicability for the C-N and C-S coupling reactions, in which good to excellent yields were obtained. Its easy separation, good reusability and stability were notable.

Abstract:We have developed a C-O cross-coupling reaction of (hetero)aryl iodides with silver carboxylates via a Au^(I)/Au^(III) catalytic cycle. The transformation featured exclusive chemoselectivity and moisture/air insensitivity. Abstract:Surface-assisted Ullmann coupling was widely applied to construct various molecular nanostructures on surfaces due to its reliability and controllability. By using 4,4''-dichloro-1,1':3',1''-terphenyl (DCTP) as the precursor, covalently bonded zig-zag oligophenylene chains and hexagonal hyperbenzene rings, e. g., [18]-honeycombenes, were successfully fabricated on Ag(111) via dechlorinated Ullmann coupling reaction. Stepwise annealing was applied to investigate the reaction process in detail. Scanning tunneling microscopy and synchrotron X-ray photoemission spectroscopy were utilized to explore the thermal evolution of the DCTP molecules on Ag(111) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, evidencing the existence of intact DCTP molecules, chemisorbed Cl atoms, covalently bonded DCTP dimers as well as organometallic C-Ag-C-containing intermediates. These results may help understand dechlorinated Ullmann coupling reaction of aryl chlorides on metal surfaces.

Abstract:Au clusters with the precise numbers of gold atoms, a novel nanogold material, have recently attracted increasing interest in the nanoscience because of very unique and unexpected properties. The unique interaction and electron transfer between gold clusters and reactants make the clusters promising catalysts during organic transformations. The AunLm nanoclusters (where L represents organic ligands and n and m mean the number of gold atoms and ligands, respectively) have been well investigated and developed for selective oxidation, hydrogenation, photo-catalysis, and so on. These gold clusters possess unique frameworks, providing insights into the catalytic processes and an excellent arena to correlate the atomic frameworks with their intrinsic catalytic properties and to further investigate the tentative reaction mechanisms. This review comprehensively summarizes the very latest advances in the catalytic applications of the Au nanoclusters for the C-C cross-coupling reactions, e.g., Ullmann, Sonogashira, Suzuki cross-couplings, and A3-coupling reactions. It is found that the proposed catalytically active sites are associated with the exposure of gold atoms on the surface of the metal core when partial capping organic ligands are selectively detached under the reaction conditions. Finally, the tentative catalytic mechanisms over the ligand-capped Au nanoclusters and the relationship of structure and catalytic performances at the atomic level using computational methods are explored in detail.

Abstract:An efficient and general protocol for copper-catalyzed N-arylation of aliphatic amines and amino acids has been developed using aryl iodides under mild conditions (coupling temperature at 25-35 degrees C). For the N-(o-nitrophenyl) amino acid derivatives, subsequent reduction of the nitro group in the presence of tin(II) chloride resulted in 3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2(1H)-one derivatives in good yields.
Atomically precise coreless AuCu bimetallic nanoclusters for Ullmann C-O coupling

Abstract:Bimetallic nanocluster with atomic precision has gained widespread attention due to its unique synergism. The coreless Au 4 Cu 5 bimetallic nanoclusters were selected as models to explore the relationship between their microstructure and performance, and compare with the coreless monometallic nanoclusters, core–shell nanoclusters, and single atom catalyst (SAC). The experimental results show that the coreless bimetallic nanocluster catalyst Au 4 Cu 5 /activated carbon (AC) exhibits high activity and stability in the Ullmann C-O coupling reaction, much higher than coreless monometallic nanoclusters (Au 11 /AC and Cu 11 /AC), core–shell nanoclusters (Au 25 /AC, Cu 25 /AC, and Au 1 Cu 24 /AC), and single atom catalysts (Au SAC and Cu SAC). Moreover, the coreless Au 4 Cus/AC catalyst efficiently catalyzed the Ullmann C-O coupling of benzyl alcohol for the first time. This structure–activity relationship was successfully extended to other coreless bimetallic systems, such as Au 4 Cu 4 /AC nanocluster, and it is expected to provide new insights for the design of bimetallic catalysts with well-defined performance.

Abstract:Pd together with CuI has been well known as the catalyst towards Sonogashira reaction, which provides an effective route to functional alkynes. However, the achievement of high activity and selectivity of this catalytic system is still challenging in some cases. Illustrative examples include their low activity for aryl chloride substrates, and switched selectivity to oxidative coupling products in air atmosphere. In this work, a Cu-incorporated Au13 nanocluster [Au13Cu2(PPh3)6(SC2H4Ph)6]+[NO3]- (Au13Cu2) was designed and prepared in high yield via rapid synthesis. This atomically precise nanocluster shows the potential to be a novel catalytic system for Sonogashira reaction, featuring high activity and selectivity, as well as good recyclability even in air atmosphere.

Abstract:Design of atomically precise metal nanocluster catalysts is of great importance in understanding the essence of the catalytic reactions at the atomic level. Here, for the first time, Au25z nanoslusters were employed as electron transfer catalysts to induce an intramolecular cascade reaction at ambient conditions and gave rise to high conversion (87%) and selectivity (96%). Electron spin-resonance spectra indeed confirmed the consecutive electron transfer process and the formation of N radical. UV-vis absorption spectra also verified Au25z was intact after the catalytic circle. Our research may open up wide opportunities for extensive organic reactions catalyzed by Au25z.
