Abstract:SnS2 has been conceived as a promising candidate for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs); however, the inferior intrinsic electrical conductivity, huge volume variation, and continuous pulverization upon cycling still hamper its practical application. To tackle these issues, a honeycomb-like hybrid architecture is delicately designed and constructed by encapsulating Cu-doped SnS2 nanosheet arrays in N-doped carbon coating (denoted as Cu-SnS2@NC). Benefitting from the synergistic effects of N-doped carbon coating and moderate Cu doping, the hybrid nanoarrays can effectively facilitate the ion/electron transfer ability, mitigate the mechanical stress, and improve the structural stability in the repeated Na+ insertion/extraction process. The optimal CuSnS2@NC nanoarrays display a remarkably high specific capacity of 1041.8 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and much improved rate performance and cycling durability. By coupling the pseudocapacitive behavior-dominated Cu-SnS2@NC anode with the Na3V2(PO4)(3) cathode, the full battery provides a high energy density of 232.4 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 239.6 W kg(-1). This work shall bring more insight into the ingenious design and fabrication of bimetallic sulfide arrays as advanced anodes for SIBs.

Abstract:Mg‐substituted Na3Ni2−xMgxSbO6 cathode materials are synthesized via a scalable high‐temperature solid‐state method to improve the cyclability of the honeycomb‐layered oxide cathode in sodium‐ion batteries. The partial substitution of Ni2+ by Mg2+ in the transition‐metal layer suppresses the electrochemically unfavorable P3–O1 transition and enlarges the lattice parameters to bring improved performance with respect to capacity retention, Coulombic efficiency, and Na (de)intercalation kinetics.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been considered as one of the most promising anodes for advanced rechargeable batteries due to its advantages such as high energy density, earth abundance and environmental friendly. However, its large volume change during the Li-Sn/Na-Sn alloying and de-alloying processes will result in a fast capacity degradation over a long term cycling. To solve this issue, in this work we design and synthesize a novel honeycomb-like composite composing of carbon encapsulated SnO2 nanospheres embedded in carbon film by using dual templates of SiO2 and NaCl. Using these composites as anodes both in lithium ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, no discernable capacity degradation is observed over hundreds of long term cycles at both low current density (100 mA g(-1)) and high current density (500 mA g(-1)). Such a good cyclic stability and high delivered capacity have been attributed to the high conductivity of the supported carbon film and hollow encapsulated carbon shells, which not only provide enough space to accommodate the volume expansion but also prevent further aggregation of SnO2 nanoparticles upon cycling. By engineering electrodes of accommodating high volume expansion, we demonstrate a prototype to achieve high performance batteries, especially high-power batteries. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Metal sulfide is considered as a potential anode for sodium-ion batteries(SIBs), due to the high theoretical capacity, strong thermodynamic stability and low-cost. However, their cycle capacity and rate performance are limited by the excessive expansion rate and low intrinsic conductivity. Herein,heterogeneous hollow sphere NiS-Cu 9 S 5 /NC(labeled as(NiCu)S/NC) based on Oswald ripening mechanism was prepared through a simple and feasible methodology. From a structural perspective, the hollow structure provides an expansion buffer and raises the electrochemical active area. In terms of electron/ion during the cycles, Na+storage mechanism is optimized by NiS/Cu 9 S 5 heterogeneous interface, which increases the storage sites and shortens the migration path of Na+. The formation of built-in electric field strengthens the electron/ion mobility. Based on the first principle calculations, it is further proved the formation of heterogeneous interfaces and the direction of electron flow. As the anode for SIBs, the synthesized(NiCu)S/NC delivers high reverse capacity(559.2 mA h g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 ), outstanding rate performance(185.3 mA h g -1 at 15 A g -1 ), long-durable stability(342.6 mA h g -1 at 4 A g -1 after 1500cycles, 150.0 m A h g -1 at 10 A g -1 after 20,000 cycles with 0.0025% average attenuation rate). The matching cathode electrode Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C is assembled with(NiCu)S/NC for the full-battery that achieves high energy density(253.7 W h kg -1 ) and reverse capacity(288.7 mA h g -1 ). The present work provides a distinctive strategy for constructing electrodes with excellent capacity and stability for SIBs.

Abstract:The categories of different sites and elementary compositions of honeycomb‐layered‐oxides are discussed. Recent progress on honeycomb‐layered‐oxides as well as Na3Ni2SbO6 and Na3Ni2BiO6 as two representative materials is introduced, and the crystal and electronic structure, electrochemical performance, and modification strategies are summarized. This review would inspire more interest in high output voltage, long lifespan sodium‐ion batteries. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are becoming promising candidates for energy storage devices due to the low cost, abundant reserves, and excellent electrochemical performance. As the most important unit, layered cathodes attract much attention, where honeycomb‐layered‐oxides (HLOs) manifest outstanding structural stability, high redox potential, and long‐life electrochemistry. Here, recent progress on HLOs as well as Na3Ni2SbO6 and Na3Ni2BiO6 as two representative materials are introduced, and the crystal and electronic structure, electrochemical performance, and modification strategies are summarized. The advanced high nickel HLOs are highlighted toward development of state‐of‐the‐art sodium‐ion batteries. This review would deepen the understanding of superstructure in layered oxides, as well as structure–property relationship, and inspire more interest in high output voltage, long lifespan sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Three-dimensionally interconnected NiSb intermetallic hollow nanospheres for Na-ion batteries are prepared by a facile and low-temperature approach involving crystallized 3D interconnected Ni nanospheres precursor and subsequent galvanic replacement reaction involving Sb ions. The 3D interconnected hollow structure and Ni matrix encapsulation contribute significantly to the excellent structure stability and high electrochemical performance of the Sb-based anode. They exhibit highly stable and substantial discharge capacities of 400, 372, 230 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at 1C, 5C, 10C, respectively. Moreover, a full Na0.4Mn0.54Co0.46O2//NiSb battery shows at a current density of 300 mA/gSb a charge and discharge capacity of 451 and 301 mA h g−1, respectively, and also displayed relatively good stability, retaining 75% of the initial discharge capacity after 20 cycles.
Synthesis and Electrochemical Investigation of O3-Type High-nickel NCM Cathodes for Sodium-ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries(SIBs) are promising energy storage devices for smart grid applications due to their low cost and the high abundance of sodium, but few cathode materials of SIBs with high energy density are available for practical applications. Herein, a series of NaNCM ternary materials(NCM=nickel-cobalt-manganese) is obtained by solid- phase reaction with well-regulated temperature and other reaction conditions. XRD results show that impure NiO phase is more likely to occur under high nickel content. The cross-section SEM indicates that the primary particles in the electrode materials are radially distributed along the radial direction, and the internal porous structure is conducive to the infiltration of electrolyte. The initial specific capacities of Na[Ni0.68Co0.10Mn0.22]O2 (NaNCM712), Na[Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2]O2 (NaNCM622) and Na[Ni0.4Co0.3Mn0.3]O2(NaNCM433) at 0.2 C are 165.5, 153.1 and 146.8 mA·h/g, and the corresponding capacity retention rates are 63.2%, 78.5% and 71.7% after 100 cycles. NaNCM712 possesses the highest initial specific capacity, and NaNCM433 delivers the best rate capability. The rate capabilities of high-nickel and low-cobalt NaNCM cathodes need to be further improved. Moreover, ex-situ XRD pattern reveals the structure evolution (from O3 type to P2 type) during a long cycling charge and discharge process.
Cation-Disordered O3-Na 0.8 Ni 0.6 Sb 0.4 O 2 Cathode for High-Voltage Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:O3-type sodium-layered oxides (such as antimony-based O3 structures) have been suggested as one of the most fascinating cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Honeycomb-ordered antimony-based O3 structures, however, unsatisfactorily exhibit complex phase transitions and sluggish Na+ kinetics during cycling. Herein, we prepared a completely cationic-disordered O3-type Na0.8Ni0.6Sb0.4O2 compound by composition regulation for SIBs. Surprisingly, the measured redox potentials for typical O3–P3 phase transition are located at 3.4 V. Operando X-ray diffraction confirms a reversible phase transition process from the O3 to P3 structure accompanied with a very small volume change (1.0%) upon sodium extraction and insertion. The low activation barrier energy of 400 meV and the fast Na+ migration of 10–11 cm2·s–1 are further obtained by first-principles calculations and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, respectively. As a result, the O3-Na0.8Ni0.6Sb0.4O2 cathode displays a reversible capacity of 106 mA h g–1 at 0.1C (12 mA g–1), smooth charge–discharge curves, and a high average working voltage of 3.5 V during battery cycling. Abstract:Development of high performance electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries has been given a lot of attention in recent years but challenges remain. Herein, we have successfully synthesized the first NiS/MoS2/C composite hollow spheres (NMSCHSs) via a facile hard template method combined with calcined sulfidation process. Owing to its unique hierarchical nanostructure with NiS nanoparticles embedded in shell wrapped with MoS2 nanosheets, the NMSCHS-based anode electrodes exhibit superior rate capability and cycling stability, with a specific discharge capacity of 516 mAh g(-1) and 98.5% retention after 60 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) and a discharge capacity of 398 mAh g(-1) even at 5 A g(-1).

Abstract:A novel biphasic layered Na0.62Ni0.33Mn0.62Sb0.05O2 cathode is introduced which can be easily synthesized via a solid-state reaction method. Compared with its monophasic counterpart Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2, biphasic Na0.62Ni0.33Mn0.62Sb0.05O2 displays a smoother (dis)charge profile, superior rate capability along with splendid cycling performance. Structural and kinetic studies respectively demonstrate extremely small volume strain and rapid charge transfer during the electrochemical process.

Abstract:As one of the most promising cathode candidates for room‐temperature sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), P2‐type layered oxides face the challenge of simultaneously realizing high‐rate performance while achieving long cycle life. Here, a stable Na2/3Ni1/6Mn2/3Cu1/9Mg1/18O2 cathode material is proposed that consists of multiple‐layer oriented stacking nanoflakes, in which the nickel sites are partially substituted by copper and magnesium, a characteristic of the material that is confirmed by multiscale scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy techniques. Owing to the optimal morphology structure modulation and chemical element substitution strategy, the electrode displays remarkable rate performance (73% capacity retention at 30C compared to 0.5C) and outstanding cycling stability in Na half‐cell system couple with unprecedented full battery performance. The underlying thermal stability, phase stability, and Na+ storage mechanisms are clearly elucidated through the systematical characterizations of electrochemical behaviors, in situ X‐ray diffraction at different temperatures, and operando X‐ray diffraction upon Na+ deintercalation/intercalation. Surprisingly, a quasi‐solid‐solution reaction is switched to an absolute solid‐solution reaction and a capacitive Na+ storage mechanism is demonstrated via quantitative electrochemical kinetics calculation during charge/discharge process. Such a simple and effective strategy might reveal a new avenue into the rational design of excellent rate capability and long cycle stability cathode materials for practical SIBs.

Abstract:Designing high-performance layered cathodes, in particular the P2-type groups, is still challenging for sodium-ion batteries. Taking advantage of the well-known Li/Ni mixing in Ni-rich layered cathodes for Li-ion batteries, a layered Na2/3Li1/9[Ni2/9Li1/9Mn2/3]O2 cathode with a superior rate and long-cycle performance is developed through Li-ion incorporation. Neutron diffraction indicates that the introduced Li ions occupy the intrinsic Na+ vacancies in the Na layer and transition metal layer concurrently. A facile solid-solution reaction mechanism upon cycling is also revealed by in situ X-ray diffraction, and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrate that the Ni2+/Ni4+ pairs participate in the electrochemical reactions, while the Mn ions remain unchanged. This material delivers ∼91.6% of the theoretical capacity initially and 64 mAh g–1 reversible capacity even at 20 C (∼58.2% of the capacity at 0.1 C) with 74.5% capacity retention after 1500 long-term cycles in the voltage range of 2.0–4.2 V. This approach can optimize the material structure design, providing some insights into designing high-rate and long-cycle life oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), owing to their abundant resources and cost-effectiveness, have garnered considerable interest in the realm of large-scale energy storage. The properties of cathode materials profoundly affect the cycle stability and specific capacity of batteries. Herein, a series of Cu-doped spherical P2-type Na0.7Fe0.23-xCuxMn0.77O2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.09, and 0.14, x-NFCMO) was fabricated using a convenient hydrothermal method. The successful doping of Cu efficaciously mitigated the Jahn-Teller effect, augmented the electrical conductivity of the material, and diminished the resistance to charge transfer. The distinctive spherical structure remained stable and withstood considerable volumetric strain, thereby improving the cyclic stability of the material. The optimized 0.09-NFCMO cathode exhibited a high specific capacity of 168.6 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1, a superior rate capability (90.9 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1), and a good cycling stability. This unique structure design and doping approach provides new insights into the design of advanced electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries.
A Novel NASICON-Type Na3.5MnCr0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 Nanofiber with Multi-electron Reaction for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium superionic conductors (NASICONs) show significant promise for application in the development of cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, it remains a major challenge to develop the desired multi-electron reaction cathode with a high specific capacity and energy density. Herein, we report a novel NASICON-type Na3.5MnCr0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 cathode obtained by combining electrospinning and stepwise sintering processes. This cathode exhibits a high discharge capacity of 160.4 mAh g−1 and operates at a considerable medium voltage of 3.2 V. The Na3.5MnCr0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 cathode undergoes a multi-electron redox reaction involving the Cr3+/4+ (4.40/4.31 V vs. Na/Na+), Mn3+/4+ (4.18/4.03 V), Mn2+/3+ (3.74/3.41 V), and Ti3+/4+ (2.04/2.14 V) redox couples. This redox reaction enables a three-electron transfer during the Na+ intercalation/de-intercalation processes. As a result, the Na3.5MnCr0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 demonstrates a significant enhancement in energy density, surpassing other recently reported SIB cathodes. The highly reversible structure evolution and small volume changes during cycling were demonstrated with in-situ X-ray diffraction, ensuring outstanding cyclability with 77% capacity retention after 500 cycles. Furthermore, a NMCTP@C//Sb@C full battery was fabricated, which delivered a high energy density of 421 Wh kg−1 and exhibited good cyclability with 75.7% capacity retention after 100 cycles. The rational design of composition regulation with multi-metal ion substitution holds the potential to unlock new possibilities in achieving high-performance SIBs.Graphical AbstractA novel NASICON-structured Na3.5MnCr0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 nanofiber was successfully designed and prepared. This nanofiber was employed to research the multi-electron reaction and the resulting structural evolution in SIBs. The optimal Na-migration pathway has also been investigated by DFT computations. Abstract:Owning to non-toxic and high working potential, Mn-substituted NASICON-type Na3+ x Mn x V2- x (PO4)3 cathodes have promising application in sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, the poor cycling stability limits their further practical applications. Herein, a succession of carbon coated Na3.75Mn0.75V1.25(PO4)3 cathodes are constructed via a sol–gel combining with heating treatment. The effects of carbon content on the structure, electrochemical properties and sodium ion diffusion kinetics are investigated. The optimal composition, Na3.75Mn0.75V1.25(PO4)3/2VitC, displays an outstanding specific capacity and long-cycling stability. It releases a discharge capacity of 105.6 mAh g- 1 with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 97.5% at 0.2C. It can also deliver a high capacity of 92.6 mAh g- 1 with a capacity retention of 88.3% at 5C over 2000 cycling, and the reversible capacity can achieve to 79.1 mAh g- 1 with 78% capacity retention after 4000 cycles at high rate of 10C. Ex-situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal a biphasic reaction process and high structural reversibility during sodium ion insertion/extraction. The good multiplicity performances, excellent long cycle stability and low cost of the optimized Na3.75Mn0.75V1.25(PO4)3 composite indicate that it is a promising cathode material for SIBs.

Flower-like NiCo2S4 nanosheets with high electrochemical performance for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:A three-dimensional flower-like NiCo2S4 formed by two-dimensional nanosheets is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and utilized as the anode for sodium-ion batteries. Studies have shown that materials can achieve the best performance under the ether-based electrolyte system with voltage ranging from 0.3 to 3 V, which could effectively avoid the dissolution of polysulfides and over-discharge of the material. Here, sodium storage mechanism and charge compensation behaviors of this ternary metal sulfide are comprehensively investigated by ex situ X-ray diffraction. Moreover, ex situ Raman spectra, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements are used to related tests for the first time. Additionally, quantitative kinetic analysis unravels that sodium storage partially depends on the pseudocapacitance mechanism, resulting in good specific capacity and excellent rate performance. The initial discharge capacity is as high as 748 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A·g−1 with the initial coulomb efficiency of 94%, and the capacity can still maintain at 580 mAh·g−1 with the Coulomb efficiency close to 100% after following 50 cycles. Moreover, by the long cycle test at a high current density of 2 A·g−1, the capacity can still reach at 376 mAh·g−1 after over 500 cycles.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides are characterized by their low price and strong capacity performance and show a great potential for development as materials for anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the structure instability and inherently poor conductivity limit their practical application. In this work, heterostructured NiS/TiO2 microflower composite materials assembled by nanosheets are synthesized through a hydrothermally assisted postsulfidation method. Meanwhile, the nanosheets are further coated by N, S double-doped carbon using pyrolytic dopamine to increase their electrical conductivity. It is demon-strated that the unique heterostructure not only narrows the band gap of composite materials but also generates an electron-concentrated region on the heterointerface, which significantly enhances the rate of charge transfer, Na+ diffusion ability, and reaction kinetic properties. As a consequence, the composites reveal superior electrochemical properties for Na+ storage; the specific capacity is 632.1 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g(-1) and even up to 1.0 A g(-1), while a capacity of 514.2 mA h g(-1) is maintained after 250 cycles. The full battery is assembled by NiS/TiO2, and Na4Fe3(PO4)(2)P2O7 also displays a good capacity and stability performance. These results provide a direction for the exploration of anode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:As an anode in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) has aroused tremendous interest owing to its earth-abundant elements and high theoretical specific capacities. Because ingenious nanostructures of electrode materials can significantly improve their energy storage properties, in this paper, CuFeS2 nanosheets have been assembled into honeycomb-like microspheres by a facile solvothermal method. The performance of the CuFeS2 product with the honeycomb-like microsphere structure is analyzed by several physicochemical characterizations. The results indicate that the microsphere structure of CuFeS2 can improve the energy storage properties of the anode material when it is used in SIBs. Specially, the reversible capacity is up to 528 mA h g–1 after 100 cycles, over 86.4% of initial capacity retentions, and an excellent cycling stability is achieved. Moreover, the CuFeS2 microsphere can buffer the volume expansion due to the unique layer structure. Therefore, CuFeS2 nanosheet-assembled honeycomb-like microspheres can significantly improve the energy storage properties of electrode materials during the discharging and charging processes, and it shows great promise to become the next-generation electrode material for large-scale energy storage.
