Abstract:A novel protocol for ruthenium-catalyzed methoxycarbonylation reaction of alkenes is reported. Using easily available Ru3(CO)12 as catalyst in the presence of [Bmim]Cl as additive, industrial important esters are produced in yields up to 82%. Compared to traditional olefin carbonylation processes key to success is running the reaction at low carbon monoxide concentration. Notably, the ionic liquid phase which contains the catalyst can be reused for several runs.

Abstract:Alkene carbonylations represent a major technology for the production of value-added bulk and fine chemicals. Nowadays, all industrial carbonylation processes make use of highly toxic and flammable carbon monoxide. Here we show the application of abundantly available carbon dioxide as C1 building block for the alkoxycarbonylations of industrially important olefins in the presence of a convenient and inexpensive ruthenium catalyst system. In our system, carbon dioxide works much better than the traditional combination of carbon monoxide and alcohols. The unprecedented in situ formation of carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide and alcohols permits an efficient synthesis of carboxylic acid esters, which can be used as detergents and polymer-building blocks. Notably, this transformation allows the catalytic formation of C–C bonds with carbon dioxide as C1 source and avoids the use of sensitive and/or expensive reducing agents (for example, Grignard reagents, diethylzinc or triethylaluminum).

Abstract:The first efficient use of paraformaldehyde in the alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes is reported. Using a combination of readily available [Ru-3(CO)(12)] and PCy3 (Cy=cyclohexyl) as catalyst, industrially important esters are produced in good to high yield (up to 90%) at relatively low temperature. This new method is applicable to a series of alkenes and alcohols. Moreover, the use of formaldehyde as the carbonyl source provides the potential to avoid both reliance on CO in carbonylation reactions, and the requirement for special high-pressure reactors.

Abstract:Ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation of multisubstituted allyl alcohols in the presence of benzaldehyde gives enals or enones in good yields. Unlike the commonly reported ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization reaction of allyl alcohols to give saturated ketones, an intermolecular rather than intramolecular hydrogen transfer is involved in this transformation. This reaction offers an efficient, mild, and high-yielding method for the preparation of substituted α,β-unsaturated compounds.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The C-O bond cleavage for activation of alcohols is synthetically useful and practically challenging. This work describes carbazate as a new type of electrochemically activated alkylating agent derived from ubiquitous alcohols for direct functionalization of heteroarenes under mild electrolytic conditions. The simple undivided cell at low oxidative potentials with carbon/platinum electrode set-ups offers excellent substrate tolerance, affording a variety of primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl-decorated heterocycles in good chemical yields. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical deoxyalkylation reaction has been investigated.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS] Attachment of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to ruthenium porphyrin via a covalent etheric bond gives soluble polymer-supported ruthenium catalysts 3-5. These catalysts exhibit high reactivity and selectivity toward alkene epoxidation with 2,6-dichloropyridine N-oxide and alkene cyclopropanation with diazo compounds. The application of these catalysts in the synthesis of unstable organic compounds has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Crystallographic characterization of RuX(CO)(η3-C3H5)(JOSIPHOS), where X = Cl, Br, or I, reveals a halide-dependent diastereomeric preference that defines metal-centered stereogenicity and, therefrom, the enantioselectivity of C−C coupling in ruthenium-catalyzed anti-diastereo- and enantioselective C−C couplings of primary alcohols with 1-aryl-1-propynes to form products of carbonyl anti-(α-aryl)allylation. Computational studies reveal that a non-classical hydrogen bond between iodide and the aldehyde formyl CH bond stabilizes the favored transition state for carbonyl addition. Abstract:Alkene carbonylation reactions are important for the production of value-added bulk and fine chemicals. Nowadays, all industrial carbonylation processes make use of highly toxic and flammable carbon monoxide. In fact, these properties impede the wider use of carbonylation reactions in industry and academia. Hence, performing carbonylations without the use of CO is highly desired and will contribute to the further advancement of sustainable chemistry. Although the use of carbon monoxide surrogates in alkene carbonylation reactions has been reported intermittently in the last 30 years, only recently has this area attracted significant interest. This Minireview summarizes carbonylation reactions of alkenes using different carbon monoxide surrogates.
