Abstract:Four different types of fused arenes, including fluoranthene, indeno-[2,1-a]phenalene, (8H)cyclopenta[a] acenaphthylene, and pyridine[a] acenaphthylene, were efficiently constructed through iodine-mediated electrophilic cyclizations of 1,8-dialkynyl naphthalenes in a single step. Theoretical calculations supported our hypothesis that these reactions had high regioselectivity. Oxidative coupling of the fluoranthene skeleton, followed by aromatization, effectively synthesized perylene derivative 14, which emitted light at 597 nm in dichloromethane with an emission efficiency of 0.81 referred to 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene as a standard.

Abstract:The preparation of a series of heterocycles obtained by the condensation of 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one with various amines is described with particular emphasis on bridged systems formed by the condensation of 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one with diamine compounds such as hydrazine. Due to sp2 hybridization of the nitrogen atom in the bridge, the protons in the two pyridine units of each bipyridine group are non-equivalent. The projection of a hydrogen atom from one of the pyridine rings into the ring current of an adjacent phenyl ring shifts the proton resonance upfield. Proton NMR resonances have been uniquely assigned for all the compounds and electronic absorptions have been attributed to π → π∗ transitions located in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. Reduction of the heterocycles occurs at the imine nitrogen bridge and is irreversible, except for the ligand resulting from the condensation of 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one with hydrazine.

Abstract:Vinyl radicals were generated from 3-iodoflavones under a mercury lamp and tandem cyclization reactions occurred with five-membered heteroarenes entailing two consecutive C-C bond formations to synthesize benzo[e] chromeno[2,3-g] indol-13(1H)-one derivatives. The tandem cyclization reactions worked in acetonitrile without any additives such as transition metals, ligands and oxidants, giving rise to a broad variety of novel polycyclic xanthone frameworks in good yield under mild and environmentally friendly reaction conditions.

Abstract:An efficient metal-free, triflic acid-promoted intramolecular Friedel-Crafts-type carbocyclization of alkenylated biphenyl derivatives is discussed. This method provides an elegant route for the construction of 9,10-dihydrophenanthrenes of biological significance in good to excellent yields. The carbocyclization reaction is likely to proceeds via activation of terminal C[bond, double bond]C bond of alkenylated biphenyl derivatives followed by subsequent aromatic electrophilic substitution to give desired carbocyclic products. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 10d revealed that the crystals are packed in AB-AB layer packing, where the molecules are aligned in anti-parallel fashion. Notably, all of the synthesized 9,10-dihydrophenanthrenes exhibited blue to greenish yellow fluorescence with λ max = 418-481 nm range. The stokes shift, quantum yield and optical band gap of tricyclic products were computed using their absorption and emission spectra. A significant positive solvatochromic effect was observed for 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene derivative 10l, which is a characteristic of ICT interactions.

Abstract:Photo‐promoted cyanomethyl radical procedures for the preparation of 2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐indenes and 2,8‐dihydrocyclopenta[a]indenes from phenyl‐linked 1,6‐enynes with α‐halogenated acetonitriles are reported. The iodocyanomethylation/cyclization is performed via an atom‐transfer radical addition (ATRA) strategy under photocatalyst‐ and oxidant‐free conditions. In particular, the photoinduced cyanomethylative cascade bicyclization is carried out under the fac‐Ir(ppy)3/Na2CO3 catalystic symtem and visible light irradiation. These methods offer a one‐step and atom‐economical access to diverse cyano‐group containing five‐membered rings with broad substrate scope and high selectivity. A plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:Fluoranthenes have attracted tremendous attention due to their unique optoelectronic properties and ex-tensive applications.Although several synthetic methodologies have been developed for the preparation of fluoranthene derivatives,it is still unfavorable to functionalize the fluoranthene framework at different positions due to the relatively low selectivity and reactivity.Herein,a catalyst-free intramolecular[4+2]annulation between thiophenes and alkynes is developed towards the synthesis of fluoranthenes.Alto-gether 20 examples have been demonstrated using this method.Various functional groups can be pre-cisely introduced into the fluoranthene skeleton at different positions by simply tuning the substituents on the thiophenes and alkynes.The conjugation of the fluoranthene can be facilely extended through different directions.Furthermore,the feasibility of this[4+2]annulation reaction is also investigated by density functional theory calculations.Therefore,this protocol provides not only a synthetic methodol-ogy towards fluoranthenes with substituents functionalized at different positions,but also an effective pathway to construct large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing fluoranthene moieties.

Abstract:Intramolecular aromatic substitution and Büchner reaction have been established as powerful methods for the construction of polycyclic compounds. These reactions are traditionally catalyzed by Rh(II) catalysts with α-diazocarbonyl compounds as the substrates. Herein a transition-metal-free intramolecular aromatic substitution/Büchner reaction is presented. These reactions use readily available N-tosylhydrazones as the diazo compound precursors and show wide substrate scope.
