Abstract:Versatile ruthenium catalysts enabled unprecedented C-H bond oxygenations of aryl Weinreb amides with ample scope under exceedingly mild reaction conditions, thereby also giving access to valuable ortho-hydroxylated aldehydes. Mechanistic studies provided strong support for a kinetically relevant C-H bond activation.

Abstract:Versatile ruthenium(II) complexes allow for site-selective C-H oxygenations with weakly-coordinating aldehydes. The challenging C-H functionalizations proceed with high chemoselectivity by rate-determining C-H metalation. Abstract:The first example of meta-selective CAr-H bond functionalization of aryl 2-pyridyl ketones has been developed using [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 as the catalyst and alkyl bromide as the coupling reagent. This development provides an efficient strategy for modifying the meta-position of aryl 2-pyridyl ketone skeletons, which are found in various functional molecules.

Abstract:Ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation of multisubstituted allyl alcohols in the presence of benzaldehyde gives enals or enones in good yields. Unlike the commonly reported ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization reaction of allyl alcohols to give saturated ketones, an intermolecular rather than intramolecular hydrogen transfer is involved in this transformation. This reaction offers an efficient, mild, and high-yielding method for the preparation of substituted α,β-unsaturated compounds.

Abstract:Electrochemical C-C activations were accomplished by expedient oxidative rhodium(III) catalysis. Thus, oxidative C-C alkenylations proved viable with the aid of electricity, avoiding the use of toxic and/or expensive transition-metal oxidants. The chelation-assisted C-C functionalizations proceeded with ample scope and excellent levels of chemo- and position selectivities within an organometallic C-C activation manifold. Detailed mechanistic studies provided support for a kinetically relevant C-C scission, and a well-defined organometallic rhodium(III) complex was identified as a catalytically competent intermediate. The electrochemical C-C functionalization was devoid of additional electrolytes, could be conducted on a gram scale, and provided position-selective access to densely 1,2,3-substituted arenes, which are not viable by C-H activation.
