Abstract:The rates of the dehydrogenation of the sodium alanates NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 doped with 2 mol % Ti or Zr have been measured over the temperature range 363-423 K. NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 undergo dehydrogenation at equal rates upon direct doping with titanium. However, Na3AlH6 arising from the dehydrogenation of Ti-doped NaAlH4 undergoes dehydrogenation at much slower rates. Rate constants were determined from the slopes of the dehydrogenation profiles. On the basis of Eyring theory, the enthalpies of activation, DeltaH(double dagger), for the dehydrogenation reactions were determined to be similar to100 kJ(.)mol(-1) for both Ti-doped NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 and similar to135 kJ(.)mol(-1) for both Zr-doped NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6. These results suggest that the dehydrogenation reaction pathways are highly sensitive to the nature and distribution of the dopant but not to differences in the AI-H bonding interactions in [AlH4](-) and [AlH6](3-) complex anions. Furthermore, we conclude that the kinetics are probably influenced by processes such as nucleation and growth and/or range atomic transport phenomenon.
Dehydrogenation process of titanium and zirconium doped alanates

Abstract:Dehydrogenation process of Ti and Zr doped alanates was studied by means of the thermal gravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TC-DTA) and isothermal dehydrogenation kinetics measurement. With using transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with an electron energy loss spectrometer (EELS), we observed the distribution of Ti element on a particle of the Ti doped material. The kinetic measurement showed that: (i) Dehydrogenation of Na3AlH6 proceeds much slower than that of NaAlH4, when the former is observed as a second step of the two step consecutive dehydrogenation of Ti doped NaAlH4. (ii) But if Na3AlH6 is doped directly with Ti, the dehydrogenation rate matches that of NaAlH4. (iii) The activation enthalpies of both Ti doped NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 are 100 kJ(.)mol(-1), and those of both Zr doped NaAlH4 and Na3AlH6 are 135 kJ(.)mol(-1). These findings imply that the rate determinig step is not related to the cleavage of Al-H bonding, which must be sensitive to whether the species involved is [AlH4](-) or [AlH6](3-), but to a long range phenomenon, such as the diffusion of the atom in the particle. The TEM-EELS observation showed that the Ti element was distributed on the surface of the particle of doped material.

Abstract:The nonisothermal dehydrogenation of TiH2 powders was studied using thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The reaction model was established by estimating the activation energy. The results show the nonisothermal dehydrogenation occurred in a four-step process. The hydrogen released from the TiH1.5∼2 phase in the first step, which led to the decrease of activation energy. The second step was derived from the formation of βH in δ phase and the reaction model was Phase boundary reaction. In the third step, the hydrogen started to release from the βH phase, and then the βH→αH phase transformation happened. So the activation energy Eα underwent a decrease followed by a quick increase. The fourth step corresponded to the formation of αH in βH phase, and the slight oxidation resulted in the small fluctuation of activation energy.

Abstract:The CeAl4-doped NaAlH4 has been synthesized by mechanical milling NaH/Al mixture with 4 mol % CeAl4 as catalyst under hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa. The hydrogen desorption thermodynamics and kinetics of as-synthesized NaAlH4 were systematically investigated. The enthalpies for the first and second dehydrogenation steps of CeAl4-doped NaAlH4 system are estimated to be 40.56 +/- 1.62 and 51.48 +/- 1.92 kJ/mol H-2, respectively. By regulating the desorption temperatures, the two dehydrogenation steps were studied separately under a constant hydrogen backpressure of 0.1 MPa. The apparent activation energy, E-a, for the first and second step is estimated to be 87.9 and 103.6 kJ/mol, respectively, by using Arrhenius equation. Isothermal dehydrogenation measurements show that no induction period is observed in the first step or the second step under the measuring conditions. Both of the decomposition steps conform to the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) formalism with Avrami exponent n approximate to 1, indicating that the nucleation of decomposition process is of the site saturation type. Detailed modeling study presents that the first-step dehydrogenation kinetics is most likely controlled by the reaction at a moving boundary, whereas the second-step decomposition follows the first-order reaction mechanism. Change in the dehydrogenation temperature does not alter the nature of decomposition mechanism.
Kinetic Characteristic of Hydrogenation Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be Bulk Amorphous Alloys

Abstract:The relationship between the hydrogen content and the microhardness and the charging period, the effect of hydrogen on the activation energy, the kinetics of glass transition and crystallization of Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be bulk amorphous alloy were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the Kissinger equation. It shows that both of the hydrogen content and the microhardness are related to the charging period, and that the glass transition and crystallization behavior are associated with the heating rate, and possess the kinetic effect. Hydrogen increases the glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature, decreasing the enthalpies in the different stages of crystallization. Hydrogen increases the activation energies of the glass transition and the crystallization and changes the kinetic effect. The dependent extent between the glass transition, the crystallization and heating rate decreases after hydrogen charging.
Exploration of the Nature of Active Ti Species in Metallic Ti-Doped NaAlH4

Abstract:Clarification of the nature of active Ti species has been a key challenge in developing Ti-doped NaAlH(4) as a potential hydrogen storage medium. Previously, it has been greatly hindered by the invisibility of Ti-containing species in conventional analysis techniques. In the present study, for the first time, the catalytically active Ti-containing species have been definitely identified by X-ray diffraction in the hydrides doped with metallic Ti. It was found that mechanical milling of a NaH/Al mixture or NaAlH(4) with metallic Ti powder resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline Ti hydrides. The variation of the preparation conditions during the doping process leads to a slight composition variation of the Ti hydrides. The catalytic enhancement arising upon doping the hydride with commercial TiH(2) was quite similar to that achieved in the hydrides doped with metallic Ti. Moreover, the cycling stability that was previously established in metallic Ti-doped hydrides was also observed in the hydrides doped with TiH(2). These results clearly demonstrate that the in situ formed Ti hydrides act as active species to catalyze the reversible dehydrogenation of NaAlH(4). The mechanism by which Ti hydrides catalyze the reversible de-/hydrogenation reactions of NaAlH(4) was discussed.

Abstract:The energetics and structure of various types of single extrinsic Ti defects in NaAlH(4) bulk and (001) slab at the hydriding/dehydriding critical point environment were studied systematically. It is found that the most favorable situation is Ti substituting Al at the subsurface (Ti(Al)(2nd)), which has the highest coordination number for extrinsic Ti ions. The most stable Ti defect in the 1st layer is located at the Al rich interstitial site, namely Ti(i)(1st), accompanied with remarkable strength of Ti-H/Al bond and local geometry deformation at the 1st layer around Ti. Deeper insight of the formation mechanism of Ti defects is obtained by dividing the formation enthalpy of Ti defects into three terms, which are contributed from the cost of removing a substituted host atom if necessary, the cost of structure deformation, and the gain of bonding between Ti and its surrounding ions in the formation of the defects. This associates the formation energy directly with the local structure of Ti defects. For the first time, we adopt H(f)(H), H(f)(H-H), H(f)(AlH(3)) and H(f)(Na) to discuss the hydrogen release ability of the Ti doped NaAlH(4). We find that TiAl(4)H(20) and TiAl(3)H(12) complexes are formed around Ti(Al)(2nd) and Ti(i)(1st) respectively, which significantly promotes the dehydriding ability of NaAlH(4). What is more, the catalyst mechanism of Ti on the decomposition of NaAlH(4) is linked to the AlH(3) mechanism according to our calculations.

Abstract:We report a first-principles study of the energetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption (i.e. H-vacancy formation) on pure and Ti-doped sodium alanate (NaAlH4) surfaces. We find that the Ti atom facilitates the dissociation of H2 molecules as well as the adsorption of H atoms. In addition, the dopant makes it energetically more favorable to creat H vacancies by saturating Al dangling bonds. Interestingly, our results show that the Ti dopant brings close in energy all the steps presumably involved in the absorption and desorption of hydrogen, thus facilitating both and enhancing the reaction kinetics of the alanates. We also discuss the possibility of using other light transition metals (Sc, V, and Cr) as dopants.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction patterns of NaAlH4 doped with up to 10 mol.% of either titanium or zirconium do not contain Bragg peaks for the bulk metals or their aluminum alloys. Instead the hydride lattice parameters a and c undergo significant contraction upon 2 mol.% doping and then expand as the doping level increases from 2 to 5 mol.%. These results are explained by a model that entails substitution of sodium cations by variable valence transition metal cations and the creation of Na+ vacancies in the bulk hydride lattice.

Abstract:A Ti-doped sodium aluminum hydride was prepared by ball-milling NaH/Al mixture with 10mol% Ti powder under hydrogen for 12h. The hydriding/dehydriding behaviors of the ball-milled sample under different temperatures (85–160°C) and hydrogen pressures (7.5–13.5MPa) were investigated. The results show that the hydriding/dehydriding temperature and hydrogen pressure affect the hydrogen storage behavior noticeably. During hydriding, under 13.5MPa hydrogen pressure, as the hydriding temperature increases from 85 to 140°C, the hydrogen absorption rate increases first and then decreases, and reaches the highest value at 120°C. And the hydrogen absorption rate increases with the increase of hydrogen pressure all the way from 7.5 to 13.5MPa. Moreover, the hydrogen desorption rate over the hydrogen pressure of 0.1MPa increases noticeably with increasing dehydriding temperature. On cycling, the hydriding/dehydriding capacity increases first and then decreases, reaching a maximum value at the fourth cycle. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses show that the hydrogen storage process of the system is governed by the slow reaction kinetics and incomplete reaction of Na3AlH6 in the hydriding/dehydriding processes.

Abstract:Ca(AlH4)(2) was synthesized by ball-milling the mixture of NaAlH4 and CaCl2 in a molar ratio of 2:1 and under a hydrogen atmosphere of 1 MPa. The dehydrogenation behavior and phase transitions of Ca(AlH4)(2) have been investigated during the thermal decomposition process. In addition, doping with TiF3 catalyst was applied to improve the dehydriding kinetics of Ca(AlH4)(2). The results show that 10 wt.% TiF3-doped Ca(AlH4)(2) exhibits excellent dehydriding performance in the first two-step decomposition reactions, with decomposition temperature dropped by 32 degrees C and 48 degrees C respectively, the activation energy for the second step decomposition reaction decreases from 153.4 kJ/mol to 57.4 kJ/mol. Moreover, our study shows that the addition of TiF3 to Ca(AlH4)(2) initiated the partially decomposition of Ca(AlH4)(2) during the ball-milling treatment, which leads to the release of H-2, as well as the generation of Ti element and probably CaAlFxH5-x. These products are ascribed to have catalytic and destabilization effects on the dehydriding kinetics of Ca(AlH4)(2) system. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Abstract:In order to fully understand the mechanism of process on laser cladding synthesis of TiCp/Al, reaction enthalpies should be brought into temperature and velocity fields numerical calculation. So in this paper, the laser emission was stopped suddenly during the scanning and the constituents in the microstructure of cladding layer ahead of laser beam were detected. The kinds of reactions can be deduced from the transition of the constituents. By means of difference thermal analysis and thermodynamics calculation, the reaction enthalpies could be determined. Study shows that: under laser lading condition, the reaction 3Al+Ti-->Al3Ti occurs firstly, and then the reaction Al3Ti+C-->TiC+3Al takes place. The reaction enthalpies of 3Al+Ti-->Al3Ti and Al3Ti+C-->TiC+3Al were determined as 146.63 kJ/mol and 38.60 kJ/mol, respectively.

Abstract:In the present work, ab initio calculations were performed for the Ti-doped Na3AlH6 to investigate influence of dopant Ti on the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties of Na3AlH6. Substitution of Ti for Al and Na atoms, respectively, and an interstitial occupation of Ti in this compound were studied. It was found that Ti prefers to substitute for Al atom with the lowest occupation energy of 0.64 eV among the considered systems. The influence of Ti on hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties of Na3AlH6 was sensitive to its occupation behavior. Ti greatly decreases the dehydrogenation energy of Na3AlH6 if it substituted for a Na atom. A mechanism described the Ti catalytic reversible reaction of NaAlH4 → Na3AlH6 was proposed based on the electronic analysis in this paper.

Abstract:The hydrogenation reaction of NaH+1/3Al+1/2H2↔1/3Na3AlH6+2/3Al+H2↔NaAlH4 was studied in the temperature range of 80–170°C and the pressure range of 8–12MPa. It was found that under the pressure of 12MPa, an increase in the hydrogenation temperature from 100 to 170°C causes a reduction in the amount of absorbed hydrogen. Under the constant pressure of 10MPa, the initial rate of hydrogenation increases when the temperature increases from 80 to 120°C, and reaches an optimum at 120°C; further increase in temperature leads to a decrease in the rate. It was also observed that at a constant temperature, the rate increases with the increase of applied hydrogen pressure. The cycling studies of titanium doped NaAlH4 have shown that the initial capacity was about 3.6wt.%, but after a few dehydrogenation–rehydrogenation cycles, the capacity decreases to 3.0wt.%. And this capacity was retained with no further deterioration in the following consecutive 100 cycles. However, the rates of the two-step dehydrogenation processes were found to reduce kinetically with the ongoing cycling.

Abstract:The presented work sets out to investigate the influence of LiCl and NaCl, the typical by-products of the mechanochemical synthesis of complex metal hydrides such as alanates and boranates, on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the dehydrogenation of Sr(AlH 4 ) 2 . We found no effect of NaCl on the decomposition pathway of Sr(AlH 4 ) 2 . Although LiCl does not affect the first dehydrogenation to SrAlH 5 , it does alter the further decomposition to the final products. Thermodynamic properties such as the heat capacity functions, enthalpies of formation and absolute entropies were determined for Sr(AlH 4 ) 2 itself and its decomposition product SrAlH 5 within this study.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of Ti-containing catalyst on the hydride formation in the Na–Al–H system, Ti(OBun)4- and TiF3-doped NaH/Al powders were hydrogenated into Na3AlH6 by controlling the hydrogen pressure at 5MPa and the temperature at 100–140°C. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry showed that TiF3 was more catalytically favorable than Ti(OBun)4 to enhance the formation of Na3AlH6. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the initial Ti4+ or Ti3+ ions were reduced to Ti1+ or Ti0 and form Ti–Al pairs with two coordination shells during the doping and hydrogenation processes. The difference in catalytic activity between the two Ti-containing catalysts can be attributed to their ability to form Ti–Al pairs with the NaH/Al mixture.
Hydriding-dehydriding Kinetics and the Microstructure of La- and Sm-doped NaAlH4 Prepared Via Direct Synthesis Method

Abstract:By directly introducing LaCl3, La3Al11, SmCl3, SmAl3 into NaAlH4 system using one-step synthesis method, the effects of these additives on NaAlH4 were systematically investigated with regard to hydriding and dehydriding properties. Results showed that the materials doped with aluminide exhibit similar kinetics to the chloride-doped NaAlH4. The apparent activation energy E-a of doped NaAlH4 were calculated to be 86.4-93.0 kJ/mol and 96.1-99.3 kJ/mol for the first and second dehydrogenation step respectively by using Kissinger's approach, much lower than those of pristine NaAlH4. A reversible hydrogen capacity of 4.8 wt% can be achieved for the La3Al11- and SmAl3-doped NaAlH4, which is 10-20% higher than chloride-doped NaAlH4. Investigations on the phase evolvement and microstructure in the cycling in LaCl3- and La3Al11-doped NaAlH4 clearly demonstrate that La species is presented as the form of La-Al nanoclusters in the materials. The combination of hydrogen storage properties and the microstructures unequivocally reveal that the in situ formed rare-earth-Al species play a crucial rule in catalyzing the chloride-doped NaAlH4. Abstract:Vaporisation thermodynamic studies were performed over <ZrAl3(cr) + ZrAl2(cr) > and <ZrAl2(cr) + Zr2Al3(cr) > biphasic region of Al-Zr system by employing Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) in the temperature range between 1,233 to 1,535 and 1,208 to 1,458 K, respectively. It was observed that these samples undergo incongruent vaporisation with Al(g) alone in the vapour phase. Following are the recommended p-T relations deduced in the present study: log (pAl/Pa) = (-18,663 ± 132)/T + (12.23 ± 0.10) (1,233-1,535 K) < ZrAl3(cr) + ZrAl2(cr)>. log (pAl/Pa) = (-18,982 ± 112)/T + (11.92 ± 0.08) (1,208-1,458 K) < ZrAl2(cr) + Zr2Al3(cr)>. From the p-T and K-T relations, based on the second and third law methods of thermodynamics, the enthalpy changes of the following reactions were evaluated: ZrAl3(cr) = ZrAl2(cr) + Al(g) and 2ZrAl2(cr) = Zr2Al3(cr) + Al(g). Subsequently, the enthalpies of the formation of ZrAl2(cr) and Zr2Al3(cr) were deduced.

Abstract:The reactivity of the Ti–Al system was investigated experimentally in the case of reactive laminated particles produced by high energy ball milling. The ignition temperature for a self-sustaining reaction was measured as a function of the heating rate. By means of the Kissinger analysis, two activation energies were evaluated. The first one is associated with the solid-state transformation at the interface below the melting point of Al. The second one corresponds to the exothermic dissolution of Ti into Al liquid together with the formation of <span class="equationTd inline-formula"><math> TiAl 3</math></span>. A complementary microscopic approach was developed in order to detect all elemental processes associated with the reactivity of the Ti–Al system in composite materials. Above the melting temperature of Al, the exothermic dissolution of Ti into the liquid layer starts and induces a self-sustaining behavior until the reaction is complete. The dissolution step is limited by the low solubility of Ti in Al. The formation of the intermetallic compound <span class="equationTd inline-formula"><math> TiAl 3</math></span> was observed. The microscopic analysis of the dissolution at the interface explains some specific features of reactive particles.
