Abstract:This paper reports for the first time that under ammonia atmosphere, ammonia borane (AB) reversibly absorbs up to at least 6 equiv of NH(3), forming liquid AB(NH(3))(n) (n = 1-6) complexes at 0 °C. Reasonable structures for AB(NH(3))(n) were identified via density functional theory calculations, which indicate that the strong classical hydrogen bond formed between the lone pair of NH(3) and the -NH(3) of AB is the driving force for the absorption of ammonia by AB. By use of the van't Hoff equation, the enthalpy change (ΔH) for AB to absorb one NH(3) was determined to be -2.24 kcal/mol, which is in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. Other organic amines were screened to further confirm the role of the N lone pair; only 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) formed a stable adduct, which X-ray structural analysis showed was the DABCO-BH(3) species. Finally, Raman spectra of AB(NH(3))(n) were collected, and its unique spectral features are also discussed.

Abstract:Interactions between LiAlH4 and LiNH2 through a gaseous ammonia intermediate have been investigated. LAlH4 and LiNH2 powders with a molar ratio of 1:1 were separated in two containers inside a reactor and heated from room temperature to 350 degrees C at a heating rate of 1 degrees C/min. The results showed that LiNH2 would decompose into Li2NH and NH3 to certain extent even at a relatively low temperature. Ammonia then reacted with Al and LiH that decomposed from LiAlH4, whereupon the chemical equilibrium of the system was altered and the initial reaction temperature was lowered. Ammonia decomposed from LiNH2 acted as an intermediate. A pathway for the thermal decomposition of the system was proposed as:[GRAPHICS]The heating rate and initial molar ratio of reactants will affect the value of m, thus the final resultants vary. The theoretical hydrogen desorption capacity of the system was calculated to be in the range of 7.39-7.88 wt.% and a total desorption capacity of 7.37 wt.% was obtained by thermal decomposition. Abstract:A novel eutectic hydrogen storage system, LiBH4·NH3–nNH3BH3, which exists in a liquid state at room temperature, was synthesized through a simple mixing of LiBH4·NH3 and NH3BH3 (AB). In the temperature range of 90–110 °C, the eutectic system showed significantly improved dehydrogenation properties compared to the neat AB and LiBH4·NH3 alone. For example, in the case of the LiBH4·NH3/AB with a mole ratio of 1:3, over 8 wt.% hydrogen could be released at 90 °C within 4 h, while only 5 wt.% hydrogen released from the neat AB at the same conditions. Through a series of experiments it has been demonstrated that the hydrogen release of the new system is resulted from an interaction of AB and the NH3 group in the LiBH4·NH3, in which LiBH4 works as a carrier of ammonia and plays a crucial role in promoting the interaction between the NH3 group and AB. The enhanced dehydrogenation of LiBH4·NH3/AB may result from the polar liquid state reaction environments and the initially promoted formation of the diammoniate of diborane, which will facilitate the B–H⋯H–N interaction between LiBH4·NH3 and AB. Kinetics analysis revealed that the rate-controlling steps of the dehydrogenation process are three-dimensional diffusion of hydrogen at temperatures ranging from 90 to 110 °C.

Abstract:This study focuses on thermal-decomposition synthesis,structure and dehydrogenation behaviors of lithium borohydride monoammoniate(LiBH4 ·NH3 ).LiBH4 ·NH3 was synthesized by thermal decomposition of the saturated ammoniateof LiBH4 at 60-80 ℃ in a closed reactor.The lattice parameters of the as-prepared LiBH4 ·NH3 were a=0.597 4(1)nm,b=0.446 6(2) nmand c=1.434 1(3)nm.Under Ar flow,the thermal decomposition of the as-prepared LiBH4 ·NH3 was a two-step reaction, and hydrogen was released below 300 ℃.While the as-prepared LiBH4 ·NH3 decomposed within the close reactor,it was also a two-step reaction.Simultaneous release of ammonia and hydrogen was observed below 300 ℃.At 300-600 ℃,the released am-monia combined with the intermediate LiBH4 to release hydrogen concurrent with the decomposition of LiBH4 .Compared to the performance of the sample synthesized by vacuuming at room temperature,the dehydrogenation performance of LiBH4 ·NH3 pre-pared by thermal decomposition of saturated ammoniate of LiBH4 was significantly improved.
Sublimation and thermal decomposition of ammonia borane: Competitive processes controlled by pressure

Abstract:Thermal behavior of ammonia borane BH3NH3 (AB) has been studied by calorimetry, tensimetry and mass spectrometry methods. It is shown, that depending on vapor pressure in the system two competitive processes are taking place at 357K. At atmospheric pressure thermal decomposition with hydrogen evolution is the dominant process: BH3NH3(s) =1/n (BH2NH2) n(s) +H2(g) (1). At low pressures (circa 4mTorr) the major process is endothermic sublimation of AB: BH3NH3(s) =BH3NH3(g) (2). At intermediate pressures both processes occur simultaneously. Enthalpies for the processes (1) and (2) have been determined by drop-calorimetry method: Δ(1) H 357°=−24.8±2.3kJmol−1 and Δsub H 357°(BH3NH3)=76.3±3.0kJmol−1. Solid products after sublimation and decomposition have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy; gaseous forms were studied by mass spectrometry. Activation energy of 94±11kJmol−1 for the process (1) in range 327–351K was determined by static tensimetry method. Based on the analysis of available thermodynamic characteristics, new values for the standard formation enthalpy of solid AB −133.4±5.2kJmol−1 and polyamidoborane −156.7±5.8kJmol−1 are recommended.

Abstract:The decomposition mechanisms of Mg(BH4)(2)center dot 2NH(3) and LiMg(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3) were studied by using density functional theory calculations. Compared to that of Mg(BH4)(2)center dot 2NH(3) , the incorporation of LiBH4 with the formation of LiMg(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3) slightly increased Bader charges of B atoms, meanwhile it decreased Bader charges of N atoms. Mg(BH4)(2)center dot 2NH(3) shows a low ammonia vacancy diffusion barrier, but relatively high ammonia vacancy formation energy, which lead to a low concentration of NH3 vacancies and limit NH3 transportation. In contrast to that of Mg(BH4)(2)center dot 2NH(3), LiMg(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3) has a relatively high ammonia vacancy formation energy and diffusion barrier, which suppresses ammonia release. The incorporation of LiBH4 and Mg(BH4)(2)center dot 2NH(3) does not decrease but increases the hydrogen formation barrier of LiMg(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3), resulting in a slight increase in the dehydrogenation peak temperature, consistent with experimental results.

Abstract:In this work, we predict a range of favorable functional properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3, a relatively new member of the boron-containing metal borohydride ammonia borane family, by means of ab initio calculations, as well as its parent compounds, LiBH4 and NH3BH3, for comparisons. Both the mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this new compound have been demonstrated theoretically for the first time. Results from elastic modulus calculations show that the mechanical properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3 are remarkably improved compared with its parent compounds. Secondly, Electronic structure results show that it remains to an insulator with large band gap typical of the boron containing hydrogenous family, but the band gap can be tuned by the compositions of NH3BH3 and LiBH4. Charge analysis demonstrates that charge transfers in individual layers of LiBH4 and NH3BH3 are similar to LiBH4 and NH3BH3, respectively. A measurable amount of charge transfers from the LiBH4 layers to the NH3BH3 layers result in enhanced activation properties for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3. Thirdly, Free energies of six possible dehydrogenation reactions have been calculated from 0 K to 700 K, and the results show that combination of NH3BH3 and LiBH4 can reduce the dehydrogenation energies compared with the parent compounds, a result consistent with recent experiments. Meanwhile, the N-B bond strengths increase and thereby borazine and diborane formation are reduced upon dehydrogenation. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The decomposition mechanisms of [Li(NH3)][BH4], [Al(NH3)(6)][BH4](3) and [Al(NH3)(6)][Li-2(BH4)(5)] were investigated using Density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The calculated results show that [Li(NH3)][BH4] has low NH3 vacancy formation energy and diffusion barrier, therefore ammonia would easily release at relatively low temperature. Both [Al(NH3)(6)] [BH4](3) and [Al(NH3)(6)]P-2(BH4)(3)] show relatively high NH3 vacancy formation energies and diffusion barriers, which avoid ammonia release at low temperature. In addition, the calculated H-2 formation energy barriers, i.e., [Al(NH3)(6)][Li-2(BH4)(5)] < [Al(NH3)(6)] [BH4](3) < [Li(NH3)][BH4], are in agreement with the tendency of dehydrogenation temperatures determined experimentally. The incorporation of [BH4](-) into [Al(NH3)(6)][BH4](3) play an important role in decreasing the dehydrogenation temperature and improving the hydrogen purity of [Al(NH3)(6)][Li-2(BH4](5)]. Abstract:The thermal decomposition of ammonia borane (AB) in the absence and presence of chemical additives was investigated to develop an approach for reducing the induction period for hydrogen release in the solid state. Gas chromatography techniques were used to measure the yield of hydrogen as a function of time under isothermal conditions between 75 and 90 °C to set the baseline. Solid-state 11B-NMR spectroscopy of the products produced after 1 mol equiv of hydrogen had been desorbed from AB (i.e., polyaminoborane) showed a complex mixture of sp3 boron species. Raman microscopy was used to follow the transformation of crystalline AB to amorphous AB upon heating and the subsequent formation of the diammoniate of diborane (DADB). A gas buret was used to monitor the time-dependent release of hydrogen from AB in the presence of chemical additives. The combination of these approaches provides insight into the mechanism of hydrogen release from solid AB. The release of molecular hydrogen is described by a process involving sequential induction (disruption of dihydrogen bonds), nucleation (formation of DADB), and growth (hydrogen release through dehydrocoupling). Addition of DADB or ammonium chloride to neat AB significantly reduces the induction time for hydrogen release. These results provide approaches to improve the hydrogen storage properties of AB.

Abstract:Inspired by both alkaline metal borohydrides and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite, we predict a pair of complex structures of (CH3NH3)BH4 with tremendous high hydrogen capacity (21.27 wt.%). Through comparison and analysis of the electronic structures of alkali metal atoms, CH3NH3, NH4, and NH3BH3 molecule, it is concluded that similar spatial and electronic structures show the feasibility of synthesizing (CH3NH3)BH4 by a substitution reaction. Firstly, theoretical structures (S1 and S2 in P 1) with stable configurations have been reconstructed by cation substitution followed by a series of restrictive structural optimizations, and both the lattice parameters and the position coordinate information of (CH3NH3)BH4 are obtained. Ignoring the relatively mobile hydrogen, the structural symmetries of S1 and S2 are I4mm and P4/nmm, respectively. X-ray diffraction characterizations of S1 and S2 are consistent with the experimental results. Secondly, the calculated elastic constants of (CH3NH3)BH4 (S1 and S2) with P 1 symmetry indicate that angles α, β and γ oscillate at right angles due to the influence of the cation orientation. The calculated spatial dependence of bulk (B), Young's (E), and shear (G) modulus obviously show that the two P 1 phases all have strong elastic anisotropy. Thirdly, the calculated electronic properties show that the protonic amine-H, hydridic borane-H, and neutral methane-H are widely distributed in (CH3NH3)BH4, which allow for weaving in a planar dihydrogen bonding network, which in turn influences the dehydrogenation reaction. Last and most important, we propose the following dehydrogenation process of (CH3NH3)BH4 via the intermediate compounds: 2(CH3NH3)BH4 → CH3NH2BH2NHCH3BH3+3H2. For each dehydrogenation step, the free energy change is negative, which means (CH3NH3)BH4 can decompose spontaneously, similar to ammonium borohydride, which is strongly related to the planar dihydrogen bonding network.

Structure analysis shows that the subsequent complex has a monoclinic structure with unit-cell parameters of a = 6.392(4) Å, b = 8.417(6) Å, c = 6.388(4) Å and β = 92.407(4) ° and space group P21, in which Zn atoms coordinate with two BH4 groups and two NH3 groups. Abstract:Attempts of synthesis of ionic (NH4)(BH3NH2BH2NH2BH3) using metathetical approach resulted in a mixture of the target compound and a partly dehydrogenated molecular NH3BH2NH2BH2NH2BH3 product. The mixed specimen was characterized by NMR and vibrational spectroscopies, and the crystal structure of their cocrystal was solved from powder x-ray diffraction data, and supplemented by theoretical density functional theory calculations. Despite their impressive hydrogen content, and similarly to ammonia borane, both title compounds release hydrogen substantially polluted with borazine, and traces of ammonia and diborane.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition properties of Ca(BH 4 ) 2 /LiNH 2 system were investigated. It was found that the mixtures started to release hydrogen at around 250 °C, but accompanied emission of ammonia at lower temperature was also occurred. XRD results revealed that, after a shot time of ball mining, the Ca(BH 4 ) 2 /LiNH 2 mixtures transferred to unidentified new phases and the decomposed product mainly consists of LiCa 4 (BN 2 ) 3 . Further improvement on restraining the ammonia release can be achieved by heating treatment of this composite or addition of LiH to the binary system.

Abstract:Step-wise combination of NH3 with BH4- was found to proceed in the AlCl3 center dot mNH(3)-nLiBH(4) system. Firstly, only two N-H bonds of the NH3 groups combined with B-H bonds at low temperature. Secondly, the residual N-H bonds could react further with excess B-H bonds at elevated temperature. This process is believed to be a common feature for many metal borohydride ammoniates.

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction studies have been performed on liquid ammonia hemihydrates (2NH(3)center dot H2O) at room temperature up to 41.0 GPa. The results demonstrate that liquid 2NH(3)center dot H2O transforms into a solid phase at 3.5 GPa. Upon increasing pressure, a solid-solid phase transition is observed at about 19.0 GPa. When pressure is increased up to 25.8 GPa, another solid-solid phase transition is obtained. The first solid-solid phase transition at about 19.0 GPa originates from the rotation of type II ammonia molecule via the O-H center dot center dot center dot N bond, and this phase transition is from orthorhombic to body-centered-cubic. High-pressure Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction results of 2NH(3)center dot H2O provide significant information for better understanding the physical properties of the ammonia-water binary system under extreme conditions, and further for the structure state of the outer planets and large satellites in the solar system.

Abstract:The monoammoniate of lithium amidoborane, Li(NH(3))NH(2)BH(3), was synthesized by treatment of LiNH(2)BH(3) with ammonia at room temperature. This compound exists in the amorphous state at room temperature, but at -20 degrees C crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with lattice parameters of a = 9.711(4), b = 8.7027(5), c = 7.1999(1) A, and V = 608.51 A(3). The thermal decomposition behavior of this compound under argon and under ammonia was investigated. Through a series of experiments we have demonstrated that Li(NH(3))NH(2)BH(3) is able to absorb/desorb ammonia reversibly at room temperature. In the temperature range of 40-70 degrees C, this compound showed favorable dehydrogenation characteristics. Specifically, under ammonia this material was able to release 3.0 equiv hydrogen (11.18 wt %) rapidly at 60 degrees C, which represents a significant advantage over LiNH(2)BH(3). It has been found that the formation of the coordination bond between ammonia and Li(+) in LiNH(2)BH(3) plays a crucial role in promoting the combination of hydridic B-H bonds and protic N-H bonds, leading to dehydrogenation at low temperature.

Abstract:Pure nanoparticle ammonia borane NH3BH3, AB) was first prepared through a solvent-free, ambient-temperature gas-phase combination of B2H6 with NH3. The prepared AB nanoparticle exhibits improved dehydrogenation behavior giving 13.6 wt.% H-2 at the temperature range of 80-175 degrees C without severe foaming. Abstract:Amminelithium borohydride (LiBH4·NH3) is one of the most hydrogen-rich inorganic materials, showing potential application for hydrogen storage. In this paper, the dehydrogenation of LiBH4·NH3 was promoted significantly through heating in ammonia atmosphere which demonstrated that the coordinate between NH3 and LiBH4 is a crucial factor in inducing the hydrogen release for this system. Meanwhile, several metal hydrides LiH, NaH, and CaH2 were found to be effective in promoting the dehydrogenation of LiBH4·NH3. Among the studied additives, the effect of LiH, as an example, was discussed in detail. It was found that the promotion of dehydrogenation through LiH is due to the reaction: 3LiH + 3LiBH4·NH3 → Li4BN3H10 + 2LiBH4 + 3H2, releasing hydrogen from 60 °C.
