Abstract:This study focuses on thermal-decomposition synthesis,structure and dehydrogenation behaviors of lithium borohydride monoammoniate(LiBH4 ·NH3 ).LiBH4 ·NH3 was synthesized by thermal decomposition of the saturated ammoniateof LiBH4 at 60-80 ℃ in a closed reactor.The lattice parameters of the as-prepared LiBH4 ·NH3 were a=0.597 4(1)nm,b=0.446 6(2) nmand c=1.434 1(3)nm.Under Ar flow,the thermal decomposition of the as-prepared LiBH4 ·NH3 was a two-step reaction, and hydrogen was released below 300 ℃.While the as-prepared LiBH4 ·NH3 decomposed within the close reactor,it was also a two-step reaction.Simultaneous release of ammonia and hydrogen was observed below 300 ℃.At 300-600 ℃,the released am-monia combined with the intermediate LiBH4 to release hydrogen concurrent with the decomposition of LiBH4 .Compared to the performance of the sample synthesized by vacuuming at room temperature,the dehydrogenation performance of LiBH4 ·NH3 pre-pared by thermal decomposition of saturated ammoniate of LiBH4 was significantly improved.

LiAlH4 As a “microlighter” on the Fluorographite Surface Triggering the Dehydrogenation of Mg(BH4)2: Toward More Than 7 Wt % Hydrogen Release below 70 °C

Abstract:Mg(BH4)(2) is one of the most promising hydrides for hydrogen storage. Herein, the dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH4)(2) are significantly improved by LiAlH4 and fluorographite (FGi) addition. The metathesis reaction between Mg(BH4)(2) and LiAlH4 has been strongly hindered by FGi, and a novel "chocolate cookie" structure is observed that Mg(BH4)(2) and LiAlH4 particles scatter uniformly on the FGi surface. An unexpected hydrogen desorption capacity of 7.12 wt % is discovered in the Mg(BH4)(2)LiAlH4-30FGi composite at a temperature as low as 68.2 degrees C. More encouragingly, the rapid dehydrogenation process can be fully accomplished in seconds, indicating an ultrafast hydrogen desorption kinetic behavior. Further investigations find that the remarkably enhanced dehydrogenation behavior is attributed to the interaction between FGi and the two hydrides, which greatly reduces the enthalpy change of the dehydrogenation reaction. This investigation reveals that the LiAlH4 can act as a "microlighter" to trigger the dehydrogenation of Mg(BH4)(2) at low temperature.

Destabilized dehydrogenation reaction of LiBH4 by AlF 3

Abstract:In this work, the composites of LiBH4 and AlF3 were prepared and their hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The AlF 3 addition to LiBH4 resulted in significant decreases in dehydrogenation temperature. All the xLiBH4 + AlF3 (x = 1, 2, 3, 5) composites started to release hydrogen from about 100 °C. The dehydrogenation of the composites was accomplished through several steps, depending on the molar ratio of LiBH4 to AlF3. A new phase Li3AlF6 was formed during the first dehydrogenation step, which further reacted with LiBH4. AlB2 was formed only at temperatures higher than 300 °C. Li2B12H12 was detected as an intermediate. The dehydrogenation reactions have significantly reduced and thus favorable enthalpy changes. However, the reversibility of the composites needs to be improved. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:LiBH4 can be destabilized by AlH3 addition. In this work, the hydrogen desorption kinetics of the destabilized LiBH4-AlH3 composites were investigated. Isothermal hydrogen desorption studies show that the LiBH4 + 0.5AlH(3) composite releases about 11.0 wt% of hydrogen at 450 degrees C for 6 h and behaves better kinetic properties than either the pure LiBH4 or the LiBH4 + 0.5Al composite. The apparent activation energy for the LiBH4 decomposition in the LiBH4 + 0.5AlH(3) composite estimated by Kissinger's method is remarkably lowered to 122.0 kJ mori compared with the pure LiBH4 (169.8 kJ moll. Besides, AlH3 also improves the reversibility of LiBH4 in the LiBH4 + 0.5AlH(3) composite. For the LiBH4 + xAlH(3) (x = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0) composites, the decomposition kinetics of LiBH4 are enhanced as the AlH3 content increases. The sample LiBH4 + 2.OAlH3 can release 82% of the hydrogen capacity of LiBH4 in 29 min at 450 degrees C, while only 67% is obtained for the LiBH4 + 0.5AlH(3) composite in 110 min. Johnson Mehl Avrami (JMA) kinetic studies indicate that the reaction LiBH4 + Al -> 'Li-Al -B' + AlB2 + H-2 is controlled by the precipitation and subsequently growth of AlB2 and Li-Al B compounds with an increasing nucleation rate. Abstract:To improve the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH4, a novel hydrogen storage system, LiBH4-Li3AlH6, was synthesized by mechanical ball milling. The dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation properties of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 (molar rato: 1: 1) composites were studied via thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass spectral analysis (MS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental results show that the hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt% and that the whole dehydrogenation is a three-step process: (1) a decomposition reaction Li3AlH6 -> 3LiH + Al + 3/2H(2), occurring at 160 degrees C; (2) formation of an intermediate product from 300 degrees C to 350 degrees C, and then subsequent transformation into Al, AlB2, and H-2. (2LiBH(4) + Al -> [Li2B2AlH4] -> x(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)) + (1-x) [Li2B2AlH4], (0 < x < 1)); and (3) final dehydrogenation of LiH + Al -> LiAl + 1/2H(2), occurring at 415 degrees C, with sequential decomposition of the remaining intermediate ((1-x)[Li2B2AlH4]->(1-x)(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)), (0 < x < 1)). A Novel Li–Ca–B–H Complex Borohydride: Its Synthesis and Hydrogen Storage Properties

Abstract:The synthesis and hydrogen-storage properties of the mixed alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal borohydride are systematically investigated. It is found that mechanical milling a mixture of LiBH4 and CaCl2 with molar ratio of 3:1 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) forms a new LiBH4 center dot Ca(BH4)(2)center dot 2THF compound. Thermal analysis indicates that the decomposition process of the new compound involves four steps: (1) LiBH4 center dot Ca(BH4)(2)center dot 2THF decomposes first into high temperature phase of LiBH4, CaB6, and an intermediate phase Ca-B-H-Cl hydride and synchronously releases a large number of H-2 and THF gas together with less B2H6; (2) the eutectic melting of LiBH4 and Ca-B-H-Cl hydride; (3) Ca-B-H-Cl hydride decomposes into CaHCl, CaB6, and a little H-2; (4) LiBH4 reacts with CaHCl, generating H-2, CaH2, CaB6, LiH, and LiCl. The first dehydrogenation step starts at ca. 70 degrees C, which is much lower than that of the pristine LiBH4 and Ca(BH4)(2). According to Kissenger's equation, the activation energies of the different dehydrogenation steps are respectively 291.95, 132.06, and 117.13 kJ/mol, except the second decomposition step. Moreover, this new compound LiBH4 center dot Ca(BH4)(2)center dot 2THF is proved to be partially reversible, which can release 5.63 wt % hydrogen in the second rehydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycle.

Abstract:The evolution of diborane accompanying H-2 release during the decomposition of transition metal borohydrides reduces the purity of evolved hydrogen and results in capacity loss during cycling. To solve the problem, a small amount of LiNH2 is doped into a 3LiBH(4)/MnF2 composite and the decomposition properties are investigated. The results show that after doping LiNH2, the formation of diborane during decomposition is effectively suppressed meanwhile the decomposition temperature is significantly reduced. Around 5 wt.% pure hydrogen can be released at 95-140 degrees C from 5 wt.% LiNH2-doped 3LiBH(4)/MnF2 composite. These improvements in the decomposition performance are mainly attributed to the prevention of the formation of B-H-B bonds for B2H6 and the destabilization of B-H bonds in borohydrides by the interaction of BH4- and NH2- Copyright (c) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. An Investigation on the Reaction Pathway Between LiAlH4 and LiNH2 Via Gaseous Ammonia

Abstract:Interactions between LiAlH4 and LiNH2 through a gaseous ammonia intermediate have been investigated. LAlH4 and LiNH2 powders with a molar ratio of 1:1 were separated in two containers inside a reactor and heated from room temperature to 350 degrees C at a heating rate of 1 degrees C/min. The results showed that LiNH2 would decompose into Li2NH and NH3 to certain extent even at a relatively low temperature. Ammonia then reacted with Al and LiH that decomposed from LiAlH4, whereupon the chemical equilibrium of the system was altered and the initial reaction temperature was lowered. Ammonia decomposed from LiNH2 acted as an intermediate. A pathway for the thermal decomposition of the system was proposed as:[GRAPHICS]The heating rate and initial molar ratio of reactants will affect the value of m, thus the final resultants vary. The theoretical hydrogen desorption capacity of the system was calculated to be in the range of 7.39-7.88 wt.% and a total desorption capacity of 7.37 wt.% was obtained by thermal decomposition. A First-Principles Simulation of the Metal Borohydride Ammonia Borane Complex (libh4)2(nh3bh3) and the Decomposition Reaction Pathway for Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:In this work, we predict a range of favorable functional properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3, a relatively new member of the boron-containing metal borohydride ammonia borane family, by means of ab initio calculations, as well as its parent compounds, LiBH4 and NH3BH3, for comparisons. Both the mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this new compound have been demonstrated theoretically for the first time. Results from elastic modulus calculations show that the mechanical properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3 are remarkably improved compared with its parent compounds. Secondly, Electronic structure results show that it remains to an insulator with large band gap typical of the boron containing hydrogenous family, but the band gap can be tuned by the compositions of NH3BH3 and LiBH4. Charge analysis demonstrates that charge transfers in individual layers of LiBH4 and NH3BH3 are similar to LiBH4 and NH3BH3, respectively. A measurable amount of charge transfers from the LiBH4 layers to the NH3BH3 layers result in enhanced activation properties for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3. Thirdly, Free energies of six possible dehydrogenation reactions have been calculated from 0 K to 700 K, and the results show that combination of NH3BH3 and LiBH4 can reduce the dehydrogenation energies compared with the parent compounds, a result consistent with recent experiments. Meanwhile, the N-B bond strengths increase and thereby borazine and diborane formation are reduced upon dehydrogenation. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The monoammoniate of lithium amidoborane, Li(NH(3))NH(2)BH(3), was synthesized by treatment of LiNH(2)BH(3) with ammonia at room temperature. This compound exists in the amorphous state at room temperature, but at -20 degrees C crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with lattice parameters of a = 9.711(4), b = 8.7027(5), c = 7.1999(1) A, and V = 608.51 A(3). The thermal decomposition behavior of this compound under argon and under ammonia was investigated. Through a series of experiments we have demonstrated that Li(NH(3))NH(2)BH(3) is able to absorb/desorb ammonia reversibly at room temperature. In the temperature range of 40-70 degrees C, this compound showed favorable dehydrogenation characteristics. Specifically, under ammonia this material was able to release 3.0 equiv hydrogen (11.18 wt %) rapidly at 60 degrees C, which represents a significant advantage over LiNH(2)BH(3). It has been found that the formation of the coordination bond between ammonia and Li(+) in LiNH(2)BH(3) plays a crucial role in promoting the combination of hydridic B-H bonds and protic N-H bonds, leading to dehydrogenation at low temperature.
The Decomposition of Α-Lin2h3bh3: an Unexpected Hydrogen Release from a Homopolar Proton–proton Pathway

Abstract:The intermolecular interactions of N-H center dot center dot center dot B-H (proton-hydride) have been considered to mediate the release of hydrogen from B-N-based complexes. Mass spectroscopy studies on the thermal decomposition of isotopomer alpha-LiN2H3BD3, however, indicate that the initial dehydrogenation occurs through a homopolar N-H center dot center dot center dot H-N (proton-proton) pathway, followed by the N-H center dot center dot center dot B-H (proton-hydride) and B-H center dot center dot center dot B-H (hydride-hydride) pathways. The unexpected scission of the N-H bonds prior to B-H bonds can be attributed to the molecular structure of Li[NH2-NH-BH3], in which the detachment of the (N) H atoms results in a significant reduction of the N-N and N-B bond length, hence reducing the (N) H detachment energy. The scission of N-H bonds further facilitates the detachment of the (B) H atom, therefore, promoting the following proton-hydride and hydride-hydride dehydrogenation pathways.
Ammonium octahydrotriborate (NH4B3H8): new synthesis, structure, and hydrolytic hydrogen release

Abstract:A metathesis reaction between unsolvated NaB(3)H(8) and NH(4)Cl provides a simple and high-yield synthesis of NH(4)B(3)H(8). Structure determination through X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis reveals weak N-H(δ+)---H(δ-)-B interaction in NH(4)B(3)H(8) and strong N-H(δ+)---H(δ-)-B interaction in NH(4)B(3)H(8)·18-crown-6·THF adduct. Pyrolysis of NH(4)B(3)H(8) leads to the formation of hydrogen gas with appreciable amounts of other volatile boranes below 160 °C. Hydrolysis experiments show that upon addition of catalysts, NH(4)B(3)H(8) releases up to 7.5 materials wt % hydrogen.

Abstract:In this work, the hydriding-dehydriding properties of the LiBH4-NbF5 mixtures were investigated. It was found that the dehydrogenation and reversibility properties of LiBH4 were significantly improved by NbF5. Temperature-programed dehydrogenation (TPD) showed that 5LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample started releasing hydrogen from as low as 60 degrees C, and 4 wt.% hydrogen could be obtained below 255 degrees C. Meanwhile, similar to 7 wt.% H-2 could be reached at 400 degrees C in 20LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample, whereas pristine LiBH4 only released similar to 0.7 wt.% H-2. In addition, reversibility measurement demonstrated that over 4.4 wt.% H-2 could still be released even during the fifth dehydrogenation in 20LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample. The experimental results suggested that a new borohydride possibly formed during ball milling the LiBH4-NbF5 mixtures might be the source of the active effect of NbF5 on LiBH4. Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) possesses a very high hydrogen capacity (18.5 wt%) but suffers from high thermal stability. In this work, the as-prepared aluminium hydride (AlH3) was ball milled with LiBH4 forming 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite to improve the hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4. Hydrogen desorption measurements showed that a hydrogen capacity of 11.2 wt% is obtained from the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite and the desorption temperature of LiBH4 with AlH3 addition is reduced by more than 30 °C. AlH3 is better as an Al source than the as-received Al in that the hydrogen desorption extent of AlH3-doped LiBH4 reaches 70%, while it is 54% and 61% for the pure LiBH4 and the Al-doped LiBH4. This is due to the brittle and oxide-free nature of AlH3. Microstructure investigations showed that during heating process, the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite undergoes AlH3 decomposition forming Al* and releasing hydrogen, followed by the decomposition of LiBH4. LiBH4 will react with Al* forming AlB2 and LiAlB compounds during its decomposition, which contributes to the improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4.

Abstract:The mixtures of LiBH4 with halides of Ce or La in a molar ratio of 3:1 were investigated to explore their hydrogen storage properties. The ball milling of LiBH4 with chloride of Ce or La yielded Ce(BH4)(3) and La(BH4)(3), while fluoride of Ce or La did not react with LiBH4 during extended ball milling at room temperature. The dehydrogenation temperatures of the ball-milled mixtures were reduced to 220-320 degrees C, which were much lower than that of pure LiBH4. The diborane emission during hydrogen release was observed at a low level. The dehydrogenation temperature is found to be affected by the composition of rare earth halides, but less influenced by ball milling time. The endothermic dehydrogenation reactions produced lithium halides, hydrides and borides of the corresponding rare earth element. Moreover, the LiBH4 + 1/3(Ce, La)(Cl, F)(3) showed partial reversibility through the formation of an unknown borohydride, allowing for a potential hydrogen storage system. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:LiBH4/Li3AlH6 hydrogen storage composite was prepared by ball-milling, and its hydrogen storage properties and mechanism were studied by TG/DSC/MS and XRD analysis. The activation energies of the dehydrogenation reactions were calculated. The experimental results show that LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite dehydrogenates shows three reactions: (1) Li3AlH6 decomposes with hydrogen desorption and formation of Al; (2) part of Al reacts with LBH4 with hydrogen desorption; (3) Al reacts with LiH. The total hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt%. And the mechanism of hydrogen desorption process of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite was discussed.
