Abstract:Abstract: This paper argues that despite the considerable resilience demonstrated by the Chinese authoritarian regime, its power experiences continuous atrophy. With the weakening of the totalitarian control imposed on Chinese society, the current stability maintenance system has been decreasing in its effectiveness. Meanwhile, contentious activities within the civil society gain momentum, and grow in both frequency and complexity. Movements such as human rights advocacy and political pluralism are traversing down a path towards a multilaterally coalesced resistance of authoritarian authority. The final part of this paper proposes and analyzes three possible trends of the development of social contentions in Chinese civil society.

Abstract:The privatization thesis of secularization theory has been challenged since last decades. Religion in public sphere is becoming contentious all over the world. Through the theoretical perspective of Max Weber' s "struggle of gods", this paper tries to analyze four controversial cases in the past three years, which include disputes among cultural traditionalists, Buddhists, Christian and non - believers, to reveal the of faith in contemporary China. On that basis, its cultural background, mechanism, pattern and social consequences will be discussed.

Abstract:The complex and quite rich discourse centered on the three “Abrahamic” religions does not suggest the only way in which one can approach the issue of religious “liberty” or understand the relation among religion and the state. China offers an important and distinctive path that is in its own way more difficult to square with the Western focused discourse that has now become a global standard. Thus is it necessary, before exploring the technical legal details about the interaction of religion and the state in China. It is perhaps not too much of an exaggeration to say that “religion” signifies the character of the entire Western Civilization-- from the Council of Nicaea to the Crusades, and unto the 17th century Enlightenment and the rise of capitalism, Judeo-Christian religions have always played dominant role in the evolution (and devolution) of what is known as the “West”. China provides a substantially different “story” and that difference is foundational to China’s approach to the legitimacy of the boundaries for religious regulation. This essay offers a brief glimpse at a complex problem, and suggests the basis for the quite substantial difficulties of communicating between systems.

Abstract:This article explores the nuanced views of lower-ranking Chinese officials about religious activities. Utilising list experiments, it overcomes the difficulty of obtaining genuine opinions on religious affairs from officials, who often face political constraints and toe the Party line. Findings show that officials are concerned mainly about the organisational aspects of religious groups rather than merely the growth of these groups. They also demonstrate sophisticated views on religious ideologies, evident in their differing concerns for Taoism and Protestantism. Social desirability bias is then discovered among these officials who exaggerate their worries about Taoism and downplay those for Protestantism, creating an illusion of religious freedom.

Abstract:It is clear that public support for democracy is high in China. Public opinion surveys show that more than 90% of Chinese citizens believe that having a democracy is good. But the majority is not yet ready for a major effort towards democratization because they still see economic growth and social stability as more important than freedom of speech, political participation, and other democratic rights. However, more and more people are growing up with the belief that political rights and freedom supersede economic wellbeing or other materialist goals. In 15–20 years, Chinese society will be dominated by people with such beliefs. We can be cautiously optimistic about the prospects for democratic change in China.

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between Christianity and Chinese society in the second half of the nineteenth century by re-examining the primary sources of anti-Christian movements. The first part shows how Christian churches broke the dominance of the Qing government over local society. Conflicts between Christianity and Chinese religion were often transformed into political confrontations between churches and the Qing bureaucracy. The second part analyzes how Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism interpreted Christianity, with an emphasis on how to understand the perception of Christianity in Chinese society. Exploring broader societal perceptions of Christianity-and not just those expressed in the writings of the Confucian literati-allows for a more nuanced understanding of Chinese interpretations of Christianity. The third part studies the relationship between churches and Chinese religious sects. On the one hand, in the language of anti-Christian movements such as those of the Zaili and Cai sects, Christianity was the hateful "Other." On the other hand, in the process of preaching Christianity, churches themselves experienced a period of transmutation: they recruited into the church not only non-religious civilians but also the followers of popular religions. For a long period, Christianity was called yangjiao, the "foreign religion," making it the "Other." Missionaries started to feel an urgency to reject their identity as the "Other" after the harrowing experience of the Boxer Movement.

Abstract:The title of this book conveys its ambitious goal. The term “religious question” is adopted to refer to the uneasy dynamics between religion and modernity in Chinese societies. It raises broad and large questions: How do religion and modern political–social framework of Chinese societies mutually adapt ever since the 1890s? Carrying this large question, Vincent Goossaert and David Palmer look at the transformation of the religious landscape from 1898 to 2008 and propose five religious questions. The first question is “how to scale back religion's domination of culture and society in order to free the human mind and carry forward the march of modernization” (401). This question was initiated at the late Qing period when the traditional Chinese religion system was challenged by elite Confucian anticlericalism and modernizing intellectuals. Later, the endeavors of constructing a modern nation-state brought about a series of antisuperstition movements and the institutionalization of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism following the normative model of Christianity.
Before the Emergence of Critical Citizens: Economic Development and Political Trust in China

Abstract:Political trust has been declining among the publics of almost all advanced industrial societies in recent years. This has been attributed to a Materialist-Postmaterialist value shift, which has given rise to a public that is less deferential to authority and increasingly ready to challenge government. This phenomenon has been interpreted as a 'crisis of democracy'. Although one might expect to find low level of political trust in repressive authoritarian societies, survey data indicates that political trust in China is actually very high. Does this simply mean that people are afraid to express any opinions that might be viewed as critical of authority? As this article will demonstrate, this does not seem to be the case. The Chinese public expresses fairly strong criticism of some aspects of Chinese society - but they express high levels of confidence in the national government. Although rich democracies provide both a higher standard of living and more personal freedom than is available to the average Chinese citizen, the Chinese public expresses higher levels of confidence in government than those found in most advanced industrial societies. We conclude that economic development has the immediate effect of enhancing public support for the government - but in the long run it also leads to value changes that promote critical citizens. At least for now, the regime-enhancing effect of economic development still dominates the regime-eroding effect. The effect of changing values on distrust of government is largely overwhelmed by the support for government brought by the increased level of affluence.

Abstract:This paper examines both the revival of religious organisations and practices in China and what could be coined the “exit from religion” exemplified by the loss of religious basis for social togetherness and the instrumentalisation of religious organisations and discourse. It argues that “revival” and “exit” taken as a twofold phenomenon facilitate an understanding of the evolving and often disputed nature of China’s religious sphere throughout history as well as the socio-political stage that the country is entering.

Abstract:With the development of social media and new information communication technology (ITC), state control imposed by authoritarian regimes over society has been challenged due to the media's pressure on legislation, policy implementation and the mobilization of collective activism. Yet it does not mean the power of media is unlimited in the authoritarian context. Using China as a case, this article tries to point out the limitations of the media's role in promoting religious freedom by reviewing the existing literature on media and social control. It stresses that the nature of religious issues, the accessibility of information, and the social consensus among netizens contribute to the difficulty in enhancing religious freedom and rights protection in China at this moment.

Abstract:The old, controversial question of whether Confucianism is a religion or not has reemerged as a central issue in contemporary China's "Cultural Renaissance Movement." The papers in this issue offer a glimpse of some notable scholarly views in recent discussions on the religious properties of Confucianism and the possibility of the religious transformation of Confucianism. The major topics include the competition between Confucianism and Christianity, the necessity to establish Confucianism as a state religion, the conception of fashioning Confucianism as a civil religion, the potential for Confucianism to provide the basis for a new Chinese cultural nationalism, and the role of Confucianism in the Chinese people's spirituality and daily lives.

Abstract:To understand the consequences of Xi Jinping's rise, one must look down as well as up. Even in the face of increased repression, people have a say over how it unfolds and the shape it takes. Many Chinese pastors are adapting to harsher policies and new ideological narratives by striving to lessen the threat Protestantism is perceived to pose. They reduce ideological competition, by not preaching about politics, dissociating from dissidents, and supporting the China Dream; security concerns, by becoming financially self-sufficient, severing ties to missionaries, and building a Chinese church; and collective action fears, by dividing congregations, avoiding networking, and viewingsmall churches as part of God's plan. By adjusting Protestant practice and incorporating the Party ideologies into their faith, pastors aim to show they can live with and are being steeled by repression.

Abstract:The study of the interaction between the religious and political spheres, as shaped and transformed throughout ages and cultures, goes far beyond historiography. It is at its core a problem that any philosophy of history has to meet with. It leads one to reflect on how societies have given an ever-evolving meaning to their collective existence. This article is based on the works of the French philosopher Marcel Gauchet (born 1946), notably on Le desenchantement du monde (1985, English translation: The Disenchantment of the World, 1999). It also critically reinterprets his thought by formalizing the articulation between the political and religious components of the social bond (lien social) in Chinese history. By doing so, it offers alternative schemes of historical understanding, suggesting that China may actually have experienced and engineered a decoupling of the political and religious dimensions not so different in nature from the historical process that took place in the West. Such perspective helps one to see in a new light the challenges presently met by the global community as it tries to articulate its current stage of development and its ultimate purpose.

Abstract:This book argues that domestic governance influenced by Confucianism can embrace the liberal aspects of democracy along with the democratic ideas of equal opportunities and governmental accountability to the people. But Confucianism would give more political decision-making power to those with the moral, practical, and intellectual capabilities of caring for the people. While most democratic thinkers still focus on strengthening equality to cure the ills of democracy, the proposed hybrid regime—made up of Confucian-inspired meritocratic characteristics combined with democratic elements and a quasi-liberal system of laws and rights—recognizes that egalitarian qualities sometimes conflict with good governance and the protection of liberties, and defends liberal aspects by restricting democratic ones. The author applies his view to the international realm by supporting a hierarchical order based on how humane each state is toward its own and other peoples, and on the principle of international interventions whereby humane responsibilities override sovereignty. The book presents a novel Confucian-engendered alternative for solving today’s political problems.

Abstract:It is a widely accepted view among researchers that Confucianism functions as a religion although it is not a religion in the typical sense of the term. That is a unique phenomenon that comes from its unique tradition about Heaven. In the early Zhou dynasty rulers tried to legitimize their rule through the theory that they had gained the mandate of Heaven because they were virtuous. Heaven still had a religious-ethical tinge in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. When Confucians went further along this line and spoke of the Heaven as the source of virtue, Confucian morality inevitably gained a religious coloring. More importantly, such religiosity was realized through the stress on benevolence in Confucianism. When benevolence was attributed to a heavenly source, it gained religious functions and powers because of the transcendency of Heaven. It thus had a strong dynamic that ensured that rationality itself would be practice.

Abstract:This research investigates the contentious use of temple assets amid widespread local state-led religious commodification in contemporary China. Based on a comparative analysis of 22 historic temples, this paper argues that given the choice, temple leaders strive for property-management autonomy, which they negotiate on two fronts. Externally, owing to the immobility of historic temple assets, temple leaders avoid antagonizing local state agents by demonstrating political conformity and the temple's economic contribution. Internally, they seek to build a donation-based merit economy to sustain the monastic institution. Since such autonomy must operate within the authoritarian state's regulatory framework, the restrained contestation of the religious leadership actually helps to strengthen state control over religion. 本研究以当代中国地方政府主导下的宗教商品化为背景,调查寺庙财产使用的政教争端。借由对 22 个著名历史寺庙的比较研究,本文主张在有选择的情况下,寺庙领导两面协商庙产管理的自主性:面对地方政府及其代理人,由于庙产的不可移动性,寺庙领导选择展现政治顺服和强调寺庙的经济贡献;面对信众,他们力求建立以宗教捐献为主的功德经济来维持寺庙的存续。但由于此自主性是建立在威权统治的政经架构上,寺庙领导克制的抗争模式反而强化了国家对其宗教的控制。
