Abstract:Markets are one of the most fundamental institutions in human societies.In principle,from the times of Adam Smith economic research has been developed around the subject of markets.However,to date,economists have failed to offer a theory of the market itself.Following the Coasian paradigm,this paper explored the basic question of "why do markets exist" and identified both the boundary and substitution conditions of the existence of the market.Based on the existence theory of the market,we further examined how ubiquitous multilateral transaction costs shape the macro-framework and micro-structure of the market network and how these transaction costs determine the nature and function of firms within market network as well as how transaction costs and market network affect economic growth.This paper concludes that today's economics should study the market not only as an invisible hand but also as a tangible network.

Abstract:On the perspective of individual, "Selfish" and "Moral" are both characteristics within human nature; On another perspective of society, in older to maintain the extending of cooperative order, it is important to construct the moral baserof the society which should be accordant with the market. However, Chinese traditional society is absences of the social moral. The theory of "social moral" which was raised by David Hume on particular moment plays an extremely important role in our current development of market economy. Universal moral rule is the precondition of economics theory. Furthermore, the valuation rule of economy theory also rejects the immoral economy behavior. So the proposition "market economy is immoral" cannot be tenable.

Abstract:For a Chinese-style market economy,a scholarly distinction is needed between long-term characteristics and those fading as economic development progresses. This article summarizes research on China's development path from the angle of social capital. Although clans still play a role in rural development,traditional rural social capital weakens economic development. In modern urban areas,the burgeoning market economy retains the power structure inherited from the old system. As the economy enters the post-industrial era,institutions embedded with power will be challenged because of their unfairness. Meanwhile,the imperfections of the market system will require more cooperation through informal institutions. In the future,China should not only construct a market economy based on a legal system,but also utilize cooperation through informal institutions as espoused by Confucianism.

Abstract:In this paper, the author gave a theoretical discussion on China' s economic system evolution and current economic structure, with the light of the concept of fief economy based on information space theory. The author argued that China' s economic system had no other choice but leading on the way to evolutionary net-work marketization, since the foregone long-lasting fief system gave her many restrictions. Therefore, to stick to the faith of so-called socialist market construction had, logically, a deep-rooted foundation both on political and economic scenes.

Abstract:The socialist market economy in China has brought about impressive economic growth. It has also resulted in serious social problems such as unemployment, deteriorating family relations, prostitution, and poverty among the disadvantaged groups. This paper discusses a welfare model proposed by the Chinese Government to contain the destabilizing effects of the social problems and to serve the newly adopted market socialism. The authors argue that although this welfare model is still very much residual by western standards, it is a big step forward in building a modern Chinese welfare system.

Abstract:This article examines the theories of institutional transformation from redistribution to markets in China from a new perspective of social integration. It argues that the transition is a process simultaneously involves the privatization of property rights, the shift of elite power, and the reorganization of interest groups. The study of China' s market transition thereby should focus on three questions: who dominants the property right? who controls the management? And who gets relatively more interests? The answers to these questions point to the shift of the underlying mechanism of integration, namely the integration of property right relationship, the integration of power and the integration of interests, among which the social relationship integration is pervasive, and crucial to understand the maintaining of social order in the course of China's transition to a market economy.

Abstract:The government plays an important role in the establishment and transformation of market economy in China. The North Paradox, i.e. the dilemma of state, suggests that we should beware of the negative impacts due to the improper administrative interventions and the lack of governmental accountability, while making full use of governmental functions. In China, the primary market economy has been established and is in the transformation towards the modern market economy. As the rule of law is its foundation, the successful transformation depends on whether the rule of law can prevail in the society. According to the rule of law, the government should be accountable. The responsible government is of great importance to foster market order and protect the property rights effectively. The rule of law is the indispensable institutional footstone for the responsible government. And the latter is the embodiment of the former in public administration. The responsible government which is a significant integrant of modern market economy is the political foundation for all states transforming towards modern market economy. The construction of responsible government depends on a complete set of institutions to ensure the government accountable to the people. The norms of governmental accountability, the appraisal mechanism of accountability performance, and accountability mechanism are the basic institutions.

Abstract:Purpose Expanding and developing the theoretical implications of socialist market economy with China's experience. Design/methodology/approach In the course of exploring the development of a market economy, China has given full play to the advantages of the socialist system, which has distinguished itself from the Western countries and some of its developing peers. China's market economy is not directly transplanted and copied from the West. China not only insists on growing its market economy but also unswervingly sticks to the socialist orientation of its market economy. Findings So far, the socialist market economy has proved to be more effective than the conventional one-sided, planned economy and also outperforms the capitalist market economy. Originality/value The socialist market economy has surpassed the conventional planned economy and the capitalist market economy – it is a reconstructed and reshaped mechanism and system as well as a successful and new path of market economy explored by China through reform and opening up, rather than a counterpart of Western market economy or the simple combination of socialism and market economy.

Abstract:This paper reviews theoretical and empirical studies of the economicsA,of religion in Western countries using a"supply-demand"framework.It is found that the existing theories in the economics of religion try to explain the mechanism of religious choice from either the supply or demand angle.The religious market theory,based on the supply dimension,takes the religious market structure as the determinant of religious choice,whereas the religious social capital theory,religious household production model,religious human capital model,and ex-post social insurance model,all based on the demand dimension,underline the impact of the interpersonal attachment within social networks,opportunity cost of religion participation,efficiency of religious production,and public goods supply of religious organization on religious choice,respectively.The robust factors affecting the religious choice identified in the existing empirical studies include age,gender and family.Although economics of religion in the West has developed a lot in recent years,this discipline is still a new one and there are obvious limitations in it.Firstly,current theories usually emphasize only one of the mechanisms of the religious choice based on either supply or demand,rarely integrating the two aspects together.Secondly,none of the theories have enough empirical evidences.Thirdly,most of the current theories in economics of religion were built on traditional Christian religions without much about other major religiousus belief systems.Since the opening and reforming,China has experienced huge and rapid changes in religious faiths.Introducing economics of religion as a perspective to China offers an opportunity to examine the religious beliefs in current China and to build and develop related theories.Meanwhile,scholars should take into consideration the differences between the Chinese society and Western societies as well as the uniqueness of China when they want to do religious studies.They should be careful when applying this perspective.

Abstract:Purpose Since the implementation of reform and opening up, China has made remarkable achievement in terms of economic reform and development. China’s path, as well as its experience, has simultaneously gained worldwide concerns. Developing the market economy against the backdrop of socialism brings conclusions from China’s achievement, deepens knowledge of China’s pathway and builds a socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics. That is the way to realise a basic socialist system, especially with regards to the organic integration of public ownership and market economy. This combination determines the future of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the success or failure of economic restructuring. Therefore, it requires consideration and in-depth study. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The goal of economic restructuring is to establish and develop the socialist market economy. Its main content can be summarised in two parts. The first is the relationship between plan and market or government and market. The second is compatibility or combination of public ownership and market economy. The former is one of the superficial problems, relevant to resource allocation method or economic operation mechanism. The latter stems from deep-rooted problems, represented by ownership or the underlying economic system. These two work together to form the organic integrity of socialist market economy where both similarities and contrasts coexist. Findings The shared ideal of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the lofty goals of communism will then become empty words. In this sense we can say that, whether we can realise the unity and opposition between public ownership and market economy and better integrate advantages of socialist system with strengths of market economy, will to a large extent determine the future and destiny of the socialist market economy. Originality/value As previously mentioned, the relationship between plan and market or government and market are part of resource allocation methods or economic operation mechanism. Compatibility and combination, however, with public ownership and market economy are part of an ownership or basic economic system. Science reveals the nature and developmental law of the socialist market economy. An in-depth study must be conducted on the relationship between public ownership and market economy.

Abstract:It is commonly believed that market economy and common prosperity are conflict and that the income redistribution policy is needed to achieve common prosperity. This article shows that this common belief is wrong. I argue that market economy is the only way for common prosperity. China’s future development depends on our beliefs. If we lose our faith in the market and introduce more and more government intervention in the name of common prosperity, China can only move towards common poverty.

Abstract:What role should the state play in China's transition to a market economy? On this issue, a consensus seems to have emerged among Chinese economists, that is, the government should leave to the market what can be best handled by the market and only concern itself with what the market cannot accomplish, either inherently or for the time being (Gao, 1993). But the extent of agreement should be exaggerated. Behind seemingly accordant statements, a great deal of room remains for argument over specifically what problems can and cannot be resolved by the market. Accepting the neoclassic assumption of the naturalness, spontaneity, and efficacy of market, and public choice theorists' thesis of the state, some Chinese economists suggest that the role of the state should be restricted to providing defense, defining property rights, enacting and implementing a system of laws, enforcing contracts, and maintaining the value of the currency They believe that if the government leaves economic actors alone, unfettered competitive markets would work better in generating socially desirable outcomes. In what follows, I argue that the state should play an active role in China's transition to a market economy. The argument is built upon three observations. First, even in mature market economies, state interventions are indispensable for remedying market irrationalities and for organizing efficient markets. Second, market institutions cannot be properly installed without the support of the state. Especially, if China is to establish a "socialist market economy," the state has the obligation to mitigate the hardships and the cruelties caused by the market transition. Third, as a giant developing country, China faces many challenges which cannot be settled through voluntary transactions.

Abstract:After 30-odd years of economic restructuring and development,the Chinese economy has seen remarkable,spectacular achievements.At the same time,however,various conflicts have become more salient due to decades of lopsided development.Thus,how to correctly handle and resolve such conflicts between social groups has become a major concern for further economic development.The logic of market-oriented reform lies in a transformation from a crude market institution to a much more mature,market-entrenched society.A market-entrenched society is not just one wherein everything hinges on the market;its focus is on reshaping the market's social foundation,giving equal weight to institutional transformation and social transformation in order to provide social support for marketization.While achieving soaring success in its economic restructuring since more than 30 years ago,China has lagged behind in overall social progress which,in the future effort along the line of marketization,should become a new,more enduring focus.

Abstract:After the brief nightmare of the "market society" in the 1990s,a flourishing counter-movement has emerged in China and is engendering a "social market." In such a market,the market is still the principal mechanism for resource allocation,but the government,through redistributive social policies,strives to re-embed the market into social and ethical relations.More specifically,the government is de-commodifying fields closely connected with the human right to survival,so that all groups in society can enjoy the benefits of market operation and all can share in its costs.The recent policy changes show that the Chinese government has the political will and fiscal capacity to act as midwife to the social market,even though both need to be further strengthened.Despite the numerous serious challenges China still faces,the ultimate emergence of social policies signifies a historic turning point.

Abstract:After World War II,to a certain degree the narrow empirical focus on western religions has made sociology of religion becoming the sociology of Christianity.As the new paradigm in sociology of religion,the religious economy model pays great attention to exclusive religions in western societies but ignores non-exclusive religions,especially those in East Asia.The author argues that it is necessary for us to analyze the applicability of the religious economy model to Chinese religions.In doing so,we can not only broaden the scope of sociology of religion but also promote the scientific study of Chinese religion.

Abstract:The spirit of Confucian ethics is virtually the ethical footnote of the feudal political system and natural economy in old China. Stressing justice instead of benefit, stressing peace instead of struggle, stressing virtues instead of laws, stressing collectivity instead of selfishness and a hierarchy of social stratums, all of these are virtually by- products of natural economy and the integrity of family- state. These have their limitations. Only through a creative transformation of the Confucian ethics and infilteration of the time- spirit could it meet the need of the socialist market economy in contemperary China. The creative transformation involves the combination of justice and benefit, stressing competition, collectrivity and selfishness, and equality and freedom.

Abstract:After su ering from the short nightmare of in the 1990s,China has found a burgeoning countermovement hastening the birth of a In a social market,the market is still the primary mechanism of resource allocation but the government employs redistributive instruments to conduct decommodification in areas concerning people's rights of existence,letting everyone share the fruits of market operation and letting each social class share the costs of market operation in a bid to reembed the market in social and ethical relations. A litany of social policies enacted in recent years show that the Chinese government has both the political will and fiscal prowess to serve as a midwife for the birth of the social market. Nevertheless,China has yet to strengthen its will and prowess. Today there still exists a multitude of grave problems in Chinese society but it is a historical turning point to see the eventual emergence of social policy whose importance cannot be overestimated.
