Abstract:Perovskite compounds have attracted recently great attention in photovoltaic research. The devices are typically fabricated using condensed or mesoporous TiO2 as the electron transport layer and 2,2'7,7'-tetrakis-(N,N-dip-methoxyphenylamine)9,9'-spirobifluorene as the hole transport layer. However, the high-temperature processing (450 °C) requirement of the TiO2 layer could hinder the widespread adoption of the technology. In this report, we adopted a low-temperature processing technique to attain high-efficiency devices in both rigid and flexible substrates, using device structure substrate/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3-x)Cl(x)/PCBM/Al, where PEDOT:PSS and PCBM are used as hole and electron transport layers, respectively. Mixed halide perovskite, CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3-x)Cl(x), was used due to its long carrier lifetime and good electrical properties. All of these layers are solution-processed under 120 °C. Based on the proposed device structure, power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.5% is obtained in rigid substrates (glass/ITO), and a 9.2% PCE is achieved for a polyethylene terephthalate/ITO flexible substrate.

Abstract:Photovoltaic technology with low weight, high specific power in cold environments, and compatibility with flexible fabrication is highly desired for near-space vehicles and polar region applications. Herein, we demonstrate efficient low-temperature flexible perovskite solar cells by improving the interfacial contact between electron-transport layer (ETL) and perovskite layer. We find that the adsorbed oxygen active sites and oxygen vacancies of flexible tin oxide (SnO2) ETL layer can be effectively decreased by incorporating a trace amount of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4). The effective defects elimination at the interfacial increases the electron mobility of flexible SnO2 layer, regulates band alignment at the perovskite/SnO2 interface, induces larger perovskite crystal growth, and improves charge collection efficiency in a complete solar cell. Correspondingly, the improved interfacial contact transforms into high-performance solar cells under one-sun illumination (AM 1.5G) with efficiencies up to 23.7% at 218 K, which might open up a new era of application of this emerging flexible photovoltaic technology to low-temperature environments such as near-space and polar regions.

Abstract:In this paper, hole-free, carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with the structure of F-doped SnO2 (FTO)/ZnO/CsPbI3/C are fabricated at a low temperature for the first time. Excess CsBr is added into CsPbI3 precursor solution to obtain stable black phase CsPbI3 at a low temperature (120 degrees C). ZnO is prepared by a spin-coating method at 120 degrees C. And then the C electrode is prepared by a doctor-blade method at 120 degrees C. The effect of different layers of ZnO on the performance of solar cells is investigated. The champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the solar cell based on 3 layers of ZnO is 10.95%, with a short-circuit current (Ad of 17.66 mA/cm(2), an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.91 V and a fill factor (FF) of 68%, which is the best performance for hole-free, carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbI3 PSCs fabricated at a low temperature, compared with the other reported results. The encapsulated device remained 91% of the initial PCE after being stored in a glove box for 5 months. For further application in flexible solar cells, the solar cells with the structure of PET/Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO)/ZnO/CsPbI3/C are fabricated under the best parameter conditions and the PCE of 8.70% is obtained. Abstract:Common polymeric conductive electrodes, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coated with indium tin oxide, face a major challenge due to their low processing-temperature limits, attributed to PET's low glass transition temperature (Tg) of (70-80 degrees C). This limitation significantly narrows the scope of material selection, limits the processing techniques applicable to the low Tg, and hinders the ripened technology transfer from glass substrates to them. Addressing the temperature constraints of the flexible substrates is impactful yet underexplored, with broader implications for fields beyond photovoltaics. Here, a new thermal radiation annealing methodology is introduced to address this issue. By applying the above Tg radiation annealing in conjunction with thermoelectric cooling, highly ordered molecular packing on PET substrates is successfully created, which is exclusively unachievable due to PET's low thermal tolerance. As a result, in the context of perovskite solar cells, this approach enables the circumvention of high-temperature annealing limitations of PET substrates, leading to a remarkable flexible device efficiency of 22.61% and a record fill factor of 83.42%. This approach proves especially advantageous for advancing the field of flexible optoelectronic devices. The high-thermal tolerance flexible perovskite solar cells with excellent mechanical stability are successfully achieved by a new thermal radiation annealing methodology, which aids in the vertical growth of perovskite grains, reduction of grain boundaries, and decrease of lattice mismatch. Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are promisingly applied to flexible solar cells because of the high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and intrinsic softness of perovskite materials. In the most efficient PSCs, mesoporous TiO2 generally functions as the electron transporting layer. However, the mesoporous TiO2 is typically generated through high‐temperature thermal annealing that is not suitable for producing flexible PSCs. In this work, TiO2 nanopillar arrays are directly deposited on flexible substrates using glancing angle deposition at low substrate temperature. The TiO2 nanopillars strongly adhere to the flexible substrates, improving light harvesting in the perovskite layers, facilitating electron extraction and transportation, and enhancing the mechanical flexibility of the PSCs. The flexible PSCs hybridized with the TiO2 nanopillars show a PCE as high as 13.3% and excellent photovoltaic stability after 500 cycles of bending at a small radius of curvature.

Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO2) has been commonly used as an electron transport layer (ETL) of regular‐structure perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and so far the reported PSC devices with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 21% are mostly based on mesoporous structures containing an indispensable mesoporous TiO2 layer. However, a high temperature annealing (over 450 °C) treatment is mandatory, which is incompatible with low‐cost fabrication and flexible devices. Herein, a facile one‐step, low‐temperature, nonhydrolytic approach to in situ synthesizing amino‐functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles (abbreviated as NH2‐TiO2 NPs) is developed by chemical bonding of amino (‐NH2) groups, via TiN bonds, onto the surface of TiO2 NPs. NH2‐TiO2 NPs are then incorporated as an efficient ETL in n‐i‐p planar heterojunction (PHJ) PSCs, affording PCE over 21%. Cs0.05FA0.83MA0.12PbI2.55Br0.45 (abbreviated as CsFAMA) PHJ PSC devices based on NH2‐TiO2 ETL exhibit the best PCE of 21.33%, which is significantly higher than that of the devices based on the pristine TiO2 ETL (19.82%) and is close to the record PCE for devices with similar structures and fabrication procedures. Besides, due to the passivation of the surface trap states of perovskite film, the hysteresis of current–voltage response is significantly suppressed, and the ambient stability of devices is improved upon amino functionalization.

Abstract:Over the last decade, organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have experienced a rapid development, with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increasing from 3.8% to 25.2%. In part, the progress has been due to the efforts in perfecting perovskite materials, including achieving a suitable bandgap, high absorption coefficient, proper morphology, and stability. In parallel efforts, the optimization of device structure and processing technology, together with perfecting the interfacial materials, strongly impacted the progress. In particular, improvements in the electron transfer layer (ETL), which enables efficient electron transfer and hole blocking, have played a vital role in device improvements. At present, TiO2 is widely adopted as an ETL, mainly due to its favorable band structure and mature fabrication process. However, its high-temperature sintering process (>450 C) hinders any low-cost and large-scale applications, and is unsuitable for the fabrication of flexible PSCs based on plastic substrates. Therefore, low-temperature-processed metal oxide materials, such as ZnO, SnO2, and ZrO2, have been studied as a replacement. Liu and Kelly were the first to use low-temperature-processed ZnO to fabricate a planar PSC, which achieved an efficiency of 15.7%. However, ZnO was found to corrode perovskite above 100 C. Shin et al. fabricated PSCs with an ETL made by using the tedious-toprocess ternary Zn2SnO4, but with a low processing temperature of 100 C, achieving a PCE of 15.3%. Abstract:Owing to the low temperature processability and high charge carrier mobility, ZnO has been successfully employed in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to act as the electron transport layer. Even so, because of the poor ZnO/perovskite interface chemical stability, achieving highly efficient and stable PSCs is still challenging the researchers. Therefore, the optimization of ZnO/perovskite interface by proper surface passivation has been developed for highly efficient PSCs. In this work, an environmentally friendly low-temperature aqueous solution-processed TiOx was applied on the aqueous solution-processed ZnO surface to promote the ZnO/perovskite interface stabilization and the interface charge recombination reduction. High performance PSCs with over 19% efficiency and relatively good stability were finally obtained. This low temperature aqueous solution-processed ZnO/TiOx route is simple and scalable, and facilities the future commercialization of perovskite based photovoltaic technology. Meanwhile, it is also compatible with the flexible energy devices.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate an effective low-temperature approach to fabricate a uniform and pinhole-free compact TiO2 layer for enhancing photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells. TiCl4 was used to modify TiO2 for efficient charge generation and significantly reduced recombination loss. We found that a TiO2 layer with an appropriate TiCl4 treatment possesses a smooth surface with full coverage of the conductive electrode. Further studies on charge carrier dynamics confirmed that the TiCl4 treatment improves the contact of the TiO2/perovskite interface, facilitating charge extraction and suppressing charge recombination. On the basis of the treatment, we improved the open circuit voltage from 1.01 V of the reference cell to 1.08 V, and achieved a power conversion efficiency of 16.4%.

Abstract:In article number 1807556, Takeshi Sano, Junji Kido, and co-workers demonstrate a low-temperature solution-processed TFB as an ideal hole-transporting layer to push the power conversion efficiency of one-step-processed CH3NH3PbI3-based inverted perovskite solar cells up to 20.2%. Moreover, this device shows good stability, retaining 90% of its original efficiency after storage for 30 days in ambient air.

Abstract:Hybrid halide perovskite solar cells have found potential applications beyond terrestrial implementation due to their unique advantages in cold environments. Unfortunately, the pioneer exploits are limited in inferior device efficiency, while the operating mechanisms at low temperatures remain unclear. Here, we revealed substantial performance enhancement for (FA,MA,Cs)Pb(I,Br) 3-based perovskite solar cells at temperatures from 290 to 180 K. Remarkably, the device obtained the highest efficiency of 25.2% (stabilized 24.2%) at 220 K, boosted from a certified efficiency of 23.3% (stabilized 22.8%) at 300 K. We proposed that the phase transition and lattice distortion in perovskite films during temperature cycling effectively activates the self-elimination of intrinsic defects, which contributes to the improved open-circuit voltage (1.153 to 1.229 V) and, thus, efficiency. In addition, the device without encapsulation was tested in the simulated near-space environment, demonstrating their operational feasibility and stability for practical low-temperature applications.

Abstract:Conventional titanium oxide (TiO2) as an electron transport layer (ETL) in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) requires a sintering process at a high temperature to crystalize, which is not suitable for flexible PSCs and tandem solar cells with their low-temperature-processed bottom cell. Here, we introduce a low-temperature solution method to deposit a TiO2/tin oxide (SnO2) bilayer towards an efficient ETL. From the systematic measurements of optical and electronic properties, we demonstrate that the TiO2/SnO2 ETL has an enhanced charge extraction ability and a suppressed carrier recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface, both of which are beneficial to photo-generated carrier separation and transport. As a result, PSCs with TiO2/SnO2 bilayer ETLs present higher photovoltaic performance of the baseline cells compared with their TiO2 and SnO2 single-layer ETL counterparts. The champion PSC has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.11% with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.15 V, a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 22.77 mA cm−2, and a fill factor (FF) of 72.38%. Additionally, due to the suitable band alignment of the TiO2/SnO2 ETL in the device, a high Voc of 1.18 V is achieved. It has been proven that the TiO2/SnO2 bilayer is a promising alternative ETL for high efficiency PSCs.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) typically use high-temperature processed TiO2 as electron transporting layers (ETLs). Here, we report a low temperature and aqueous solution processed route to prepare ZnO ETLs for perovskite solar cells. The ZnO ETL was prepared by spin coating a stable aqueous solution of an ammine-hydroxo zinc complex, [Zn(NH3)(x)](OH)(2), followed by thermal annealing at a relatively low temperature of 150(circle)C. The as-prepared ZnO film was highly transparent and uniform. Moreover, the relatively low work function of the ZnO film led to a high open circuit voltage (1.07 V), indicating its promise as the electron transporting layer. To further improve the photovoltaic performance, urea was introduced between the ZnO layer and the perovskite layer to improve the perovskite crystal growth. As a result, the PCE surged to 14.6%. We further exploited the lowtemperature processed ZnO film for flexible PSCs, which have shown good mechanical stability with a respectable PCE of 11.9%.

Abstract:An innovative research has discovered that employing a low‐temperature UV ozone treatment can remarkably increase the efficiency of perovskite solar cells to 17.79%. This breakthrough not only delivers a cost‐effective and highly efficient way to harness solar energy but also opens up a bright future for advanced solar technologies, sparking a new era of green energy innovation. In recent years, the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has seen rapid development, with most high‐efficiency devices incorporating dense titanium dioxide (TiO2) barrier layers and mesoporous TiO2 layers to enhance selective electron transport. However, the manufacturing process requires high‐temperature sintering steps above 450 °C, leading to significant energy consumption. In addition, this requirement greatly limits the potential applications of PSCs in the field of flexible electronics. This study introduces a new method for preparing dense‐layer‐free mesoporous PSCs using low‐temperature UVO annealing of m‐TiO2. UVO annealing effectively removes residual organic components from m‐TiO2 precursor films, enhances the conductivity and wettability of the films, thereby reducing carrier recombination and improving the performance of PSCs. Research has shown that PSC with a 40 min UVO annealed m‐TiO2 layer exhibits a final photoelectric conversion efficiency of 17.79%, comparable to devices with traditional high‐temperature annealed m‐TiO2 PSCs. In addition, after 7 days at room temperature and ambient humidity, the unpackaged device maintains a maximum conversion efficiency of 84%. These findings indicate that UVO light annealing is a feasible alternative to high‐temperature annealing, providing a simpler, more cost‐effective, and energy‐saving method for the preparation of metal oxide electron transport layer in PSCs.

Highest‐Efficiency Flexible Perovskite Solar Module by Interface Engineering for Efficient Charge‐Transfer

Abstract:The electron transport layer (ETL) places an important role in improving the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells (F‐PSCs). Herein, w e demonstrate a room temperature processed SnO2:OH ETL that exhibits reduced defect density, in particular lower oxygen vacancy concentration with better energy band alignment and more wettable surface for quality perovskite deposition. More importantly, an efficient electron transfer channel is produced between the ETL and the perovskite layer due to the formation of hydrogen bonds at the interface, resulting in enhanced electron extraction from the perovskite. As a result, the efficiency of a large area (36.50 cm2) flexible perovskite solar module based on MAPbI3 is increased to as high as 18.71%, to the best of o ur knowledge, this is the highest PCE value reported for flexible perovskite solar modules up to date. In addition, it exhibits high durability while maintaining over 83% of its initial PCE after flexing test cycles. Further, F‐PSCs with SnO2:OH show remarkably long‐term stability, owing to a high quality of the perovskite film and a strong coupling between the SnO2:OH and perovskite layer caused by hydrogen bonds,, which successfully inhibits moisture permeation. Abstract:Lightweight flexible perovskite solar cells are promising for building integrated photovoltaics, wearable electronics, portable energy systems and aerospace applications. However, their highest certified efficiency of 19.9% lags behind their rigid counterparts (highest 25.7%), mainly due to defective interfaces at charge-selective contacts with perovskites on top. Here we use a mixture of two hole-selective molecules based on carbazole cores and phosphonic acid anchoring groups to form a self-assembled monolayer and bridge perovskite with a low temperature-processed NiO nanocrystal film. The hole-selective contact mitigates interfacial recombination and facilitates hole extraction. We show flexible all-perovskite tandem solar cells with an efficiency of 24.7% (certified 24.4%), outperforming all types of flexible thin-film solar cell. We also report 23.5% efficiency for larger device areas of 1.05 cm(2). The molecule-bridged interfaces enable significant bending durability of flexible all-perovskite tandem solar cells that retain their initial performance after 10,000 cycles of bending at a radius of 15 mm. The efficiency of flexible perovskite solar cells lags behind their rigid counterparts. Now, Li et al. devise a self-assembled monolayer bridged hole-selective contact with reduced defects and improved bending durability, achieving a 24.4% certified efficiency.
