Abstract:Organic–inorganic halide perovskite (OIHP) solar cells with efficiency over 18% power conversion efficiency (PCE) have been widely achieved with lab scale spin‐coating method which is however not scalable for the fabrication of large area solar panels. The PCEs of OIHP solar cells made by scalable deposition methods, such as doctor‐blading or slot‐die coating, have been lagging far behind than spin‐coated devices. In this study the authors report composition engineering in doctor‐bladed OIHP solar cells with p–i–n planar heterojunction structure to enhance their efficiency. Phase purer OIHP thin films are obtained by incorporating a small amount of cesium (Cs + ) and bromine (Br − ) ions into perovskite precursor solution, which also reduces the required film formation temperature. Pinhole free OIHP thin films with micrometer‐sized grains have been obtained assisted by a secondary grain growth with added methylammonium chloride into the precursor solution. The OIHP solar cells using these bladed thin films achieved PCEs over 19.0%, with the best stabilized PCE reaching 19.3%. This represents a significant step toward scalable manufacture of OIHP solar cells.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells have achieved efficiency over 23% in the last few years. However, most perovskite solar cells have been fabricated by lab-scale spin-coating method and the strategy for the doctor-bladed device improvement is quite limited. In this study, we report an additive-assisted strategy enabled by Poly(acrylic acid) molecular doping to connect wide gaps between the large domains and passivate defects in the bladed perovskite film. Using this strategy, we obtain a smooth, uniform, and pin-hole free doctor-bladed perovskite film of high electronical quality, which are proved by detailed laser spectroscopy. Consequently, the P-i-N planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells with these bladed thin films achieve considerable enhancement of power conversion efficiency from 10.3% to 14.9% compared to the control device. This work represents an alternative pathway for scalable, cost-effective manufacturing of high performance perovskite devices.

Abstract:The conformal and scalable growth of perovskite film on industrially textured silicon with a hybrid evaporation-solution method contributes to sufficient light utilization and large-scale commercialization of monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. However, the efficacy of this approach is hindered by the incomplete reaction during the transition from spin-coating to blade-coating techniques, notably involving the buried sublimation-PbI2. Herein, we demonstrate a triple-source coevaporation (PbI2, PbCl2, and CsBr) method combined with the framework-heat-treatment (FHT) strategy. Such inorganic framework composition engineering generates a quasi-two-dimensional layered structure, CsPb2X5, which enlarges the inorganic interlayer spacing and facilitates the penetration of organic salt solution. Consequently, a high-quality perovskite film with fully converted PbI2 has been achieved. This advance translates into one of the best tandem solar cells that has a stabilized efficiency of 28.3% (1.05 cm(2)). Impressively, the encapsulated device retains 94% of its initial performance after operating for more than 1200 h under 1-sun illumination in ambient air.

Abstract:The efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are now reaching such consistently high levels that scalable manufacturing at low cost is becoming critical. However, this remains challenging due to the expensive hole-transporting materials usually employed, and difficulties associated with the scalable deposition of other functional layers. By simplifying the device architecture, hole-transport-layer-free PSCs with improved photovoltaic performance are fabricated via a scalable doctor-blading process. Molecular doping of halide perovskite films improved the conductivity of the films and their electronic contact with the conductive substrate, resulting in a reduced series resistance. It facilitates the extraction of photoexcited holes from perovskite directly to the conductive substrate. The bladed hole-transport-layer-free PSCs showed a stabilized power conversion efficiency above 20.0%. This work represents a significant step towards the scalable, cost-effective manufacturing of PSCs with both high performance and simple fabrication processes.

Abstract:Challenges in fabricating all-perovskite tandem solar cells as modules rather than as single-junction configurations include growing high-quality wide-bandgap perovskites and mitigating irreversible degradation caused by halide and metal interdiffusion at the interconnecting contacts. We demonstrate efficient all-perovskite tandem solar modules using scalable fabrication techniques. By systematically tuning the cesium ratio of a methylammonium-free 1.8–electron volt mixed-halide perovskite, we improve the homogeneity of crystallization for blade-coated films over large areas. An electrically conductive conformal "diffusion barrier" is introduced between interconnecting subcells to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of all-perovskite tandem solar modules. Our tandem modules achieve a certified PCE of 21.7% with an aperture area of 20 square centimeters and retain 75% of their initial efficiency after 500 hours of continuous operation under simulated 1-sun illumination.

Abstract:Electronic band structure engineering of metal-halide perovskites (MHP) lies at the core of fundamental materials research and photovoltaic applications. However, reconfiguring the band structures in MHP for optimized electronic properties remains challenging. This article reports a generic strategy for constructing near-edge states to improve carrier properties, leading to enhanced device performances. The near-edge states are designed around the valence band edge using theoretical prediction and constructed through tailored material engineering. These states are experimentally revealed with activation energies of around 23 milli-electron volts by temperature-dependent time-resolved spectroscopy. Such small activation energies enable prolonged carrier lifetime with efficient carrier transition dynamics and low non-radiative recombination losses, as corroborated by the millisecond lifetimes of microwave conductivity. By constructing near-edge states in positive-intrinsic-negative inverted cells, a champion efficiency of 25.4% (25.0% certified) for a 0.07-cm2 cell and 23.6% (22.7% certified) for a 1-cm2 cell is achieved. The most stable encapsulated cell retains 90% of its initial efficiency after 1100 h of maximum power point tracking under one sun illumination (100 mW cm-2) at 65 degrees C in ambient air. Efficient doping of hybrid perovskites holds the potential to further advance solar cell efficiency. This study presents a generic strategy for perovskite doping by constructing ultra-shallow near-edge states. These states can effectively prolong electron-hole recombination through efficient trap and de-trap processes, resulting in over 25% efficiency in inverted perovskite solar cells with superior long-term operational stability.image

Abstract:Abstract All‐perovskite tandem solar cells offer the potential to surpass the Shockley–Queisser (SQ) limit efficiency of single‐junction solar cells while maintaining the advantages of low‐cost and high‐productivity solution processing. However, scalable solution processing of electron transport layer (ETL) in p‐i‐n structured perovskite solar subcells remains challenging due to the rough perovskite film surface and energy level mismatch between ETL and perovskites. Here, scalable solution processing of hybrid fullerenes (HF) with blade‐coating on both wide‐bandgap (≈1.80 eV) and narrow‐bandgap (≈1.25 eV) perovskite films in all‐perovskite tandem solar modules is developed. The HF, comprising a mixture of fullerene (C 60 ), phenyl C 61 butyric acid methyl ester, and indene‐C 60 bisadduct, exhibits improved conductivity, superior energy level alignment with both wide‐ and narrow‐bandgap perovskites, and reduced interfacial nonradiative recombination when compared to the conventional thermal‐evaporated C 60 . With scalable solution‐processed HF as the ETLs, the all‐perovskite tandem solar modules achieve a champion power conversion efficiency of 23.3% (aperture area = 20.25 cm 2 ). This study paves the way to all‐solution processing of low‐cost and high‐efficiency all‐perovskite tandem solar modules in the future.

Abstract:The past 5 years have witnessed the rise of highly efficient organometal halide perovskite-based solar cells. In conventional perovskite solar cells, compact n-type metal oxide film is always required as a blocking layer on the transparent conducting oxide (TCO) substrate for efficient electron-selective contact. In this work, an interface engineering approach is demonstrated to avoid the deposition of compact n-type metal oxide blocking film. Alkali salt solution was used to modify the TCO surface to achieve the optimized interface energy level alignment, resulting in efficient electron-selective contact. A remarkable power conversion efficiency of 15.1% was achieved under AM 1.5 G 100 mW · cm(-2) irradiation without the use of compact n-type metal oxide blocking layers.

Abstract:To push perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology toward practical applications, large-area perovskite solar modules with multiple subcells need to be developed by fully scalable deposition approaches. Here, we demonstrate a deposition scheme for perovskite module fabrication with spray coating of a TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL) and blade coating of both a perovskite absorber layer and a spiro-OMeTAD-based hole transport layer (HTL). The TiO2 ETL remaining in the interconnection between subcells significantly affects the module performance. Reducing the TiO2 thickness changes the interconnection contact from a Schottky diode to ohmic behavior. Owing to interconnection resistance reduction, the perovskite modules with a 10 nm TiO2 layer show enhanced performance mainly associated with an improved fill factor. Finally, we demonstrate a four-cell MA0.7FA0.3PbI3 perovskite module with a stabilized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.6% measured from an aperture area of ∼10.36 cm2, corresponding to an active-area module PCE of 17.9% with a geometric fill factor of ∼87.3%.

Abstract:High-quality wide-bandgap perovskite films are a key component in constructing efficient tandem solar cells. Although the efficiency of perovskite tandem devices advances rapidly in recent years, the majority of wide-bandgap perovskite films are deposited by laboratory spin-coating, which greatly hinders their commercial viability. Here, we first show that the widely-used binary solvents (DMF:DMSO) in spin-coating are incapable of producing qualified wide-bandgap perovskite films by scalable methods. It is identified that dense and uniform wide-bandgap thin films can be deposited from single-solvent NMP by blade-coating, which is mainly related to the well-controlled crystallization kinetics enabled by the formation of stable intermediate adduct. Along with a rational passivation by constructing a 2D/3D layered heterojunction, inverted perovskite devices with a bandgap of 1.8 eV deliver a champion efficiency of 18.92 %. On this basis, monolithic perovskite-organic tandem solar cells with an efficient and robust interconnection layer of "SnO 2 /Au/PEDOT:PSS" are fabricated, yielding a high efficiency of 22.25 % along with an impressive open-circuit voltage of 2.1 V. These results demonstrate an important step toward scalable fabrication of monolithic perovskite-organic tandem solar devices.

Abstract:A vapor‐to‐solid deposition of high‐quality large‐area perovskite films is developed via a new process based on a 2D intermediated phase. Efficiencies of 21.1% and 20.1% are achieved for perovskite modules with active areas of 12.5 and 48.0 cm2, respectively. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can enable renewable electricity generation at low levelized costs, subject to the invention of an economically feasible technology for their large‐scale fabrication, like vapor deposition. This approach is effective for the fabrication of small area (<1 cm2) PSCs, but its scale‐up to produce high‐efficiency larger area modules has been limited by a severe imbalance between the vapor‐solid reaction kinetics and the mass‐transport of the volatile ammonium salt precursor. In this study, an amidine‐based low‐dimensional perovskite is introduced as an intermediate of the solid‐vapor reaction to help resolve this limitation. This improves reaction pathway produces unique vertically monolithic grains with no detectable horizontal boundaries, which is used to produce 1.0 cm2 PSCs with an efficiency of 22.1%, as well as 12.5 and 48 cm2 modules delivering 21.1% and 20.1% efficiency, respectively. The modules retain ≈85% of their initial performance after 900 h of continuous operation (ISOS‐L‐1 protocol) and ≈100% after 2800 h of storage in an ambient environment (ISOS‐D‐1 protocol).

Abstract:Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have drawn great attention for their outstanding performance in high-efficiency solar cells. Successful synthesis has been realized either in solution-based chemical deposition or vapor deposition. However, conflicts have never ceased among quality control, growth rate, process complexity, and instrument requirement, which have limited their development toward real applications. In this work, the first electrochemical fabrication of perovskite toward high-efficiency and scalable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is established. The morphology and crystallization of the CH3NH3PbI3 film can be effectively controlled by simply modulating a few physical parameters. A detailed study on its optoelectronic properties reveals significantly improved film quality and interfacial conditions. Aided by this, the total process does not require standard annealing, which greatly reduces the total growth time from hours to minutes. Up to now, an efficiency of 15.65% has been achieved in planar PSCs under 1 sun AM 1.5 condition, with small hysteresis and efficiency loss under longtime exposure to air. Moreover, high efficiency (10.45%) can be easily attained for large cells (2 cm(2)). This result will hopefully facilitate research for applicable high-efficiency PSCs and other multicomponent materials as well.
Compact Layer Free Perovskite Solar Cells with 13.5% Efficiency

Abstract:The recent breakthrough of organometal halide perovskites as the light harvesting layer in photovoltaic devices has led to power conversion efficiencies of over 16%. To date, most perovskite solar cells have adopted a structure in which the perovskite light absorber is placed between carrier-selective electron- and hole-transport layers (ETLs and HTLs). Here we report a new type of compact layer free bilayer perovskite solar cell and conclusively demonstrate that the ETL is not a prerequisite for obtaining excellent device efficiencies. We obtained power conversion efficiencies of up to 11.6% and 13.5% when using poly(3-hexylthiophene) and 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)-9,9'-spirobifluorene, respectively, as the hole-transport material. This performance is very comparable to that obtained with the use of a ZnO ETL. Impedance spectroscopy suggests that while eliminating the ZnO leads to an increase in contact resistance, this is offset by a substantial decrease in surface recombination.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have made tremendous progress using laboratory-scale spin-coating methods in the past few years owing to advances in controls of perovskite film deposition. However, devices made via scalable methods are still lagging behind state-of-the-art spin-coated devices because of the complicated nature of perovskite crystallization from a precursor state. Here we demonstrate a chlorine-containing methylammonium lead iodide precursor formulation along with solvent tuning to enable a wide precursor-processing window (up to ∼8 min) and a rapid grain growth rate (as short as ∼1 min). Coupled with antisolvent extraction, this precursor ink delivers high-quality perovskite films with large-scale uniformity. The ink can be used by both spin-coating and blade-coating methods with indistinguishable film morphology and device performance. Using a blade-coated absorber, devices with 0.12-cm2 and 1.2-cm2 areas yield average efficiencies of 18.55% and 17.33%, respectively. We further demonstrate a 12.6-cm2 four-cell module (88% geometric fill factor) with 13.3% stabilized active-area efficiency output.

Abstract:<p>Halide perovskites are one of the ideal photovoltaic materials for constructing flexible solar devices due to relatively high efficiencies for low‐temperature solution‐processed devices. However, the overwhelming majority of flexible perovskite solar cells are produced using spin coating, which represents a major hurdle for upscaling. Here, a scalable approach is reported to fabricate efficient and robust flexible perovskite solar cells on a polymer substrate. Thiourea is introduced into perovskite precursor solution to modulate the crystal growth, resulting in dense and uniform perovskite thin films on rough surfaces. As a decisive step, a cascade energy alignment is realized for the hole extraction layer by rationally designing a bilayer interface comprised of PEDOT:PSS/PTAA with a distinct offset in the highest occupied molecular orbital levels, enabling markedly enhanced charge extraction and spectral response. An efficiency as high as 19.41% and a record fill factor up to 81% are achieved for flexible perovskite devices processed by a scalable printing method. Equally important, the bilayer interface reinforces the bendability of the indium tin oxide substrate, leading to enhanced mechanical robustness of the flexible devices. These results underpin the importance of morphology control and interface design in constructing high‐performance flexible perovskite solar cells.</p>

Abstract:Gas quenching and vacuum quenching process are widely applied to accelerate solvent volatilization to induce nucleation of perovskites in blade-coating method. In this work, we found these two pre-crystallization processes lead to different order of crystallization dynamics within the perovskite thin film, resulting in the differences of additive distribution. We then tailor-designed an additive molecule named 1,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)thiourea to obtain films with fewer defects and holes at the buried interface, and prepared perovskite solar cells with a certified efficiency of 23.75%. Furthermore, this work also demonstrates an efficiency of 20.18% for the large-area perovskite solar module (PSM) with an aperture area of 60.84 cm2. The PSM possesses remarkable continuous operation stability for maximum power point tracking of T90 > 1000 h in ambient air.

Abstract:Blade‐coated mixed Tin–lead perovskites face a daunting challenge: rapid and uncontrollable crystallization, which leads to numerous defects and significant stress. Utilizing multiple carboxyl and amino groups can effectively control crystal growth and boost crystallinity. This enables blade‐coated single‐junction narrow‐bandgap perovskite solar cells and their two‐terminal tandems to achieve power conversion efficiencies of 20.95% and 27.20%, respectively. Mixed tin–lead (Sn–Pb) perovskites often face a daunting challenge: rapid and uncontrollable crystallization, leading to a plethora of defects and significant stress. This issue is particularly exacerbated during the blade‐coating preparation of scalable Sn–Pb perovskite films. In this study, a facile strategy involving the addition of ammonium citrate (AC) to narrow‐bandgap mixed Sn–Pb perovskite precursors is introduced. AC, armed with its arsenal of multiple carboxyl and amino groups, acts as a virtuoso conductor, orchestrating controlled crystal growth by harmonizing with Pb2+ and Sn2+ ions. This addition significantly boosts the crystallinity of the perovskite films, alleviates interface stress, inhibits Sn2+ oxidation, and mitigates interfacial defects. Consequently, The blade‐coated AC‐incorporated mixed Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells achieve a high photovoltaic conversion efficiency of nearly 21%. Furthermore, extending this strategy to two‐terminal all‐perovskite tandem solar cells yielded a remarkable maximum efficiency of 27.20%. This work presents an effective strategy for producing efficient blade‐coated mixed Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells, heralding a pathway toward scalable fabrication of all‐perovskite tandem solar cells.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have been attracting considerable interest due to their unique advantages of low cost, light weight, and especially mechanical flexibility. The low-cost and high-throughput techniques matching with the large-scale and roll-to-roll (R2R) process for fabricating efficient OSCs in the ambient condition would greatly accelerate the potential commercialization of OSCs. Herein, we demonstrate that the fabrication processes of OSCs using the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) composed of poly[(2,6–(4,8-bis(5–(2-ethylhexy)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5–(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T) and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3–(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-5-methylindanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]-dithiophene (IT-M) are transferred from a glovebox to the ambient condition, where the deposition of doctor blading instead of conventional spin coating is investigated. The morphology, microphase separation, and crystallinity of BHJ PBDB-T:IT-M are dramatically influenced by the fabrication processes. The OSCs with a structure of ITO/ZnO/PBDB-T:IT-M/MoO<sub>3</sub>/Ag fabricated via doctor-blading in the ambient condition show a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.0% as compared to conventional spin-coated OSCs in a glovebox with a PCE of 11.91% and in the ambient condition with a PCE of 9.91%. These results suggest that efficient OSCs could be processed in the ambient condition by large-scale and low-cost doctor-blading, which can be compatible with the R2R manufacturing process.

Abstract:In addition to high efficiencies, upscaling and long‐term operational stability are key pre‐requisites for moving perovskite solar cells toward commercial applications. In this work, a strategy to fabricate large‐area uniform and dense perovskite films with a thickness over one‐micrometer via a two‐step coating process by introducing NH4Cl as an additive in the PbI2 precursor solution is developed. Incorporation of NH4Cl induces the formation of the intermediate phases of x[NH4+]·[PbI2Clx]x− and HPbI3−xClx, which can effectively retard the crystallization rate of perovskite leading to uniform and compact full‐coverage perovskite layers across large areas with high crystallinity, large grain sizes, and small surface roughness. The 5 × 5 and 10 × 10 cm2 perovskite solar modules (PSMs) based on this method achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.55% and 10.25%, respectively. These PSMs also exhibit good operational stability with a T80 lifetime (the time during which the solar module PCE drops to 80% of its initial value) under continuous light illumination exceeding 1600 h (5 × 5 cm2) and 1100 h (10 × 10 cm2), respectively.
