Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0-1) composite oxides were prepared by sol-gel method, and then they were used as supportpr tp prepare PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The effect of Ce/Zr atomic ratio on the structure of crystalline phase, redox property and TWC catalytic activity of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxides and PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were studied. The results show that phase structure of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxide depends on the CeO2 content. The different Ce/Zr atomic ratio affects the catalytic activity of PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts much. In the reaction of NO-CO and CO-O-2, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst is the highest. However, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is the highest in the reaction of CH4-O-2. The alpha: H-2-TPR peak is related probably to the NO-CO and CO-O-2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.

Abstract:CeO2-ZrO2 doped by nickel oxide (CZN) with different method and Pd-only three-way catalysts (Pd/CZN) were prepared and characterized. The catalyst prepared by co-precipitation and supercritical drying process (Pd/CZN-s) exhibits the best catalytic activity and the widest operation working window before and after aging. Compared with other samples, CZN-s shows the formation of more homogeneous ternary solid solution with the smallest lattice parameter and crystallite size. Moreover, CZN-s maintains the high thermal and structural stability with higher surface area and larger pore volume after aging. Pd/CZN-s exhibits higher relative concentration of Ce3+ associated with the formation of more oxygen vacancies before and after aging, confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman results. The more concentration of Ce3+ or oxygen vacancies leads to the enhancement of oxygen storage complete capacity of CZN-s. Moreover, the higher the oxygen storage capacity, the wider the working ranges of air/fuel variations.

Abstract:In this paper, five types of ceria–zirconia modified alumina (CZA) were prepared by co-precipitation with supercritical drying (CPS), co-precipitation with common drying (CPC), sol–gel (SG), micro-emulsion (ME) and impregnation (IM) methods, respectively. The corresponding supported Pd-only three-way catalysts (TWC) were also prepared and evaluated in the simulative gasoline engine exhaust. The influence of different preparation methods on the physicochemical properties of CZA mixed oxide and its supported TWC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The redox behavior was investigated with H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) experiments. The results reveal that the CZA mixed oxides derived from CPS and ME methods exhibit the relatively higher textural and structural properties as well as better redox behavior, which lead to the better catalytic activity and wider air-to-fuel operation window of the corresponding Pd-only three-way catalysts.

Abstract:Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (CZ) mixed oxide was prepared by coprecipitation and effect of the synthesis conditions on CZ properties were investigated in this work, as well as the catalytic performance of Pd-only three-way catalyst (TWC) supported on the prepared CZ. With the increase of aging temperature during precipitation, the crystallite size of CZ increases significantly, while the oxygen storage capacity complete (OSCC) drops and no notable effect on porosity of CZ is observed. The porosity is mainly determined by drying temperature and pH value during precipitation. Prepared under optimized conditions (precipitation at the pH of 9.5, aging at 25 degrees C and then drying under supercritical condition in alcohol), the CZ samples exhibit good properties. This preparation procedure leads to CZ with proper pore size distribution, larger average pore size (20.42 nm), higher pore volume (0.69 cm(3)/g) and enhanced OSCC value (383.0 mu mol/g). Furthermore, the Pd-only TWC supported on the CZ synthesized under the optimized conditions exhibits satisfactory catalytic activity and very low reduction temperature (53 degrees C). Abstract:A CeO2-ZrO2 compound with mixed phase composition (CZ4) was prepared by modified co-precipitation method, and for comparison, single-phase Ce(0.2)Zr(0.8)O2, Ce(0.5)Zr(0.5)O2 and Ce(0.8)Zr(0.2)O2 were synthesized via simultaneous co-precipitation method. The textural, structural and redox properties, together with the catalytic performance of the supported Pd-only three-way catalysts were investigated systematically. The results revealed that the generation of numerous interface sites in Pd/CZ4 due to its mixed phase composition (as confirmed by TEM observation) had a positive influence on modifying its structural, redox properties and thermal stability. The XRD and Raman results revealed that the highest structural stability was obtained by Pd/CZ4 with negligible lattice variation and slightest grain growth after aging treatment. The XPS analysis demonstrated that the compositional heterogeneity of Pd/CZ4 could facilitate the formation of Ce(3+), and was beneficial to preserve high dispersion of Pd as well as maintain Pd at a more oxidized state. The H2-TPR and oxygen storage capacity measurements indicated that Pd/CZ4 possessed highest reduction ability as well as largest oxygen storage capacity regardless of thermal aging treatment. And consequently Pd/CZ4 exhibited improved three-way catalytic activity compared with the catalysts supported on single-phase Ce(x)Zr(1-x)O2 both before and after thermal aging treatment.

Abstract:The CexZr1-x-Al mixed oxides were prepared by the sol-gel method and the super-critical dryness method.The samples were characterized by means of XRD and BET techniques,and the three-way catalytic performance of their supported-Pd catalysts was also investigated.It was found that the samples calcined at 1 100 ℃ for 4 h still had large specific surface area(>95 m2·g-1) and no α-Al2O3 was formed.Based on the TEM and the investigation of catalytic performance,the catalysts containing cerium-zirconium solid solution had good catalytic activity and thermal stability,and the three-way catalytic performance of Pd/Ce0.75Zr0.25-Al was best.The catalyst Pd/Ce0.75Zr0.25-Al had low light-up temperatures(T20%) of 140 ℃,268 ℃,340 ℃ and 175 ℃ for CO,C3H6,NO and NO2,respectively,and the temperatures at which the reactants were converted fully were only raised by 10-20 ℃ after thermal aging.

Abstract:The ceria-zirconium-modified alumina-supported palladium catalysts are prepared using impregnation method with H2PdCl4 as Pd source, hydrazine hydrate as reducing agent. The physicochemical properties of these catalysts are characterized by BET surface area (BET), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and temperature programmed oxidation (O2-TPO) techniques, and their catalytic activities for the combustion of methane are examined. The results show that the palladium mainly exist in a highly dispersed PdO species on Ce-Zr-rich grains as well as Al2O3-rich grains surfaces, and a stable PdO species due to the strong interaction between PdO and CeO2-ZrO2 on the Ce-Zr/Al2O3 surfaces. The catalytic activity is strongly related to the redox behavior of PdO species highly dispersed on Ce-Zr-rich grains and Al2O3-rich grains surfaces, and the higher the reducibility of the PdO species, the higher the catalytic activity. The presence of Ce-Zr in Pd/Al2O3 catalyst would inhibit the site growth of PdOx particles and decomposition of PdO to Pd0, and the reoxidation property of Pd0 to PdOx is significantly improved, which obviously increases thermal stability and catalytic activity of Pd/Ce-Zr/Al2O3 catalyst for the methane combustion.

Abstract:The properties of a catalyst support are closely related to the catalyst activity, yet the focus is often placed on the active species, with little attention given to the support properties. In this work, we specifically investigated the changes in support properties after the addition of P, as well as their impact on catalyst activity when used for catalyst preparation. We prepared the CeO2-ZrO2-P2O5-Al2O3 (CeZrPAl) composite oxides using the sol-gel, impregnation, and mechanical mixing methods, and characterized the support properties using techniques such as XRD, XPS, SEM-EDS, N2 adsorption-desorption, and Raman spectra. The results showed that the support prepared using the sol-gel method can exhibit a more stable phase structure, larger surface area, higher adsorption capacity for oxygen species, and greater oxygen storage capacity. The addition of an appropriate amount of P is necessary. On the one hand, the crystallization and growth of CePO4 can lead to a decrease in the Ce content in the cubic phase ceria-zirconia solid solution, resulting in a phase separation of the ceria-zirconia solid solution. On the other hand, CePO4 can lock some of the Ce3+/Ce4+ redox pairs, leading to a reduction in the adsorption of oxygen species and a decrease in the oxygen storage capacity of the CeZrPAl composite oxides. The research results indicated that the optimal P addition is 6 wt.% in the support. Therefore, we prepared a Pd/CeZrPAl catalyst using CeZrAl with 6 wt.% P2O5 as the support and conducted the catalytic oxidation of C3H8. Compared with the support without P added, the catalyst activity of the support loaded with P was significantly improved. The fresh and aged (1000 °C/5 h) catalysts decreased by 20 °C and 5 °C in T50 (C3H8 conversion temperature of 50%), and by 81 °C and 15 °C in T90 (C3H8 conversion temperature of 90%), respectively.

Abstract:A Pd/CZ(NO) catalyst prepared with Pd(NO3)2 as the metal precursor exhibited the best catalytic performance for HC and CO elimination because of a higher oxygen storage capacity, abundant small Pdn clusters and a strong Pd-support interaction that facilitated electron transfer from PdOx particles to the CZ support. A Pd/CZ(NH) catalyst prepared with Pd(NH3)4(NO3)2 as the metal precursor exhibited good performance for NO and NO2 elimination due to a higher Pd dispersion, abundant bigger Pdn clusters and oxidized/metallic Pd coexistence. A Pd/CZ(Cl) catalyst prepared with H2PdCl4 as the metal precursor exhibited low catalytic activity due to a low Pd dispersion, weak Pd-support interaction, and the trace amount of CeOCl which inhibited oxygen vacancy creation. However, it showed good thermal stability, and benefited when an aging treatment removed the residual chlorine species and also promoted the interaction between PdOx and the support.
Redox properties and metal–support interaction of Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2–Al2O3 catalyst for CO, HC and NOx elimination

Abstract:Ce0.67Zr0.33 02, Ce0.67Zr0.3302-Al203 and -y-Al203 supported Pd catalysts (designated as Pd/CZ, Pd/CZA and Pd/Al2 03) have been characterized by XRD, CO chemisorption, in situ DRIFTS, XPS, HRTEM, H2-TPR, 02-TPSR and catalytic performance test. The results show that the small Pd0, particles dispersed in CZ would promote the conversion of HC, CO and NO2, while the Pd0, particles dispersed in Al203 promote the conversion of NO in the light-off process. Pd0, species mainly disperse on Al203-rich grains surface for fresh Pd/CZA catalyst, but easily migrate onto CZ-rich grains surface due to the strong interaction between Pd and ceria-based oxide under high temperature reaction conditions. And it promotes the thermal stability of Pd 0 species and resilience of Pd to Pd 0, therefore enhances the catalytic performance for HC, CO and NO elimination. Meanwhile, the interaction between CZ and Al203 can be enhanced after aging treatment, resulting in increasing the thermal stability of Pd/CZA catalyst. 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The behavior of Pd-only three-way catalysts supported on Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 mixed oxides (CZ) doped by transition metals (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) (Pd/CZM) have been examined under stoichiometric CO+HC+NOx+O2 reaction conditions and characterized. Different characterization techniques reveal that transition metal ions have entered into the ceria lattice and atomically more homogeneous mixed oxides have formed on the order of CZFe≈CZCo>CZNi≈CZ>CZMn>CZCr. It is confirmed that the homogeneity of ternary solid solution clearly modifies the properties of the samples and the catalytic behavior of the corresponding catalysts. The introduction of transition metals especially doped Fe and Co improves the oxygen mobility and strongly enhances the oxygen storage capacity of CZ and the corresponding catalysts. Moreover, the addition of Fe and Co into CZ forms more homogeneous Ce–Zr–M–O ternary solid solution and simultaneously promotes the reduction of CZ and Pd noble metal, respectively. It is worthwhile to note that it has a strong interaction between transition metals and Pd noble metal. Furthermore, the presence of Fe and Co obviously decreases the light-off temperature and significantly enhances the catalytic activity of the catalysts. Simultaneously, the windows of activity over Pd/CZFe and Pd/CZCo catalysts become wider compared to that of Pd/CZ.

Abstract:Series of Pd/CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 (Pd/CZA) with different pore structures and lanthanum modified Pd/La-Al2O3 (Pd/La-A) were prepared via coprecipitation or hydrothermal method. The obtained catalysts were subjected to TWC activity evaluation, thermal stability tests as well as systematic characterizations including TEM, BET, Rietveld XRD, XPS, H2-TPR, O2-TPSR, and in situ DRIFTS. Results show that the TWC catalytic performance of Pd/Al2O3 catalyst can be obviously improved by CeO2-ZrO2 modification compared to La2O3 modification, due to the strong interaction between PdOx species and CeO2-ZrO2 support. The excellent thermal stability of Pd/CZA-2 catalyst is related to its different microstructure compared to Pd/CZA-1, because the abundant dissociated Zr4+ due to phase separation in Pd/CZA-2 could hinder the θ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3 phase transition and retain small-sized PdOx species with excellent reoxidation ability. Besides, DRIFTS studies reveal clear structure-activity correlations between the adsorbed reaction intermediates and TWC catalytic performance, i.e. The formation of NO-Pd0 species on fresh Pd/CZA-1 is beneficial for NO conversion, while the rapid adsorption/decomposition of HC and carbonate species on Pd/CZA also contributes to better HC/CO oxidation. Nevertheless, the active sites poisoning by HC strong adsorption along with temperature-stable nitrate species on Pd/La-A cost its inferior catalytic behaviour regardless of thermal ageing.

Abstract:CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3(CZA) composites, combining the advantages of CeO2-ZrO2 (CZ) and Al2O3, are widely used in three-way catalyst as an indispensable support material. However, due to the adverse Zr-Al interaction and the different precipitation conditions for Ce3+/Ce4+ and Zr4+, the CZA prepared by conventional co-precipitation method has poor compositional homogeneity, resulting in degradation of redox properties. In this study, a homogeneous CZA composite is synthesized by a novel hydrothermal assisted precipitation method, in which the CZ-precipitates and Al-precipitates will be controlled separately. A quantitative EDX points analysis reveals that the Ce/Zr ratio in the resulting CZA material exhibits slight fluctuations between 0.72 and 0.91, which is much narrow than that from conventional precipitation method (0.38∼0.83). As a result, the resulting CZA material exhibits the better redox property, higher specific surface area, and more importantly, its supported Pd/CZA catalyst exhibit superior three-way catalytic activity, the T50 (temperature for 50% conversion) for CO, NO, C3H6 and C3H8 over which is 41 ℃, 26 ℃, 28 ℃ and 12 ℃, respectively, lower than that from conventional method.

Abstract:To investigate the correlation of activity and chemical state of Pd species in the three-way catalytic reaction, the supported Pd catalysts were prepared by using CeO2 calcined at different temperatures as supports. It turned out that the chemical state of Pd could severely affect the catalytic activity of Pd/CeO2, which depended on the CeO2 properties and the interaction between Pd and CeO2. With increasing CeO2 calcination temperature from 500 to 1200 °C, the state of Pd gradually transferred from Pd4+ as PdxCe1-xO2-σ to Pd2+ as PdO due to the decreased interaction between Pd and CeO2. Meanwhile, the TOFs of C3H8 oxidation linearly increased and the TOFs of CO oxidation showed a reversed trend, demonstrating the active states of Pd in C3H8 and CO oxidation were different. NO conversion was correlated to the activity of CO oxidation in low-temperature zone and C3H8 oxidation in high-temperature zone during the three-way catalytic reaction. Among them, Pd/CeO2(500) showed the highest CO oxidation activity and low-temperature NO conversion due to the enhanced adsorption ability of CO and NO. The existence of PdO on the surface of high-temperature calcined CeO2 facilitated C3H8 activation and reaction with surface nitrate/nitrite, which promoted NO conversion in high temperature.

Abstract:Three types of CuO-CeO2/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared with ZrO2 as the support by different impregnation sequences, and were calcined at different temperatures (500, 650 and 800 degrees C). These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction by H-2 or CO (H-2-TPR, CO-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of CO (TPD) techniques. Their catalytic activities for low temperature CO oxidation were investigated using a microreactor-gas chromatograph system. The results indicate that the catalytic activity for the catalysts calcined at 650 degrees C is the highest and is in the following order: CuO/CeO2/ZrO2>CuO-CeO2/ZrO2>CeO2/CuO/ZrO2. Based on the results of characterizations and catalytic activity measurements, we propose that the well-dispersed CuO is the center for adsorption of CO and is favorable for low-temperature CO oxidation, and the bulk CuO contributes little to the catalytic activity because of its inability to adsorb CO. Among the three types of catalysts, CuO/CeO2/ZrO2 has better low-temperature redox property, larger CO2 desorption peak area and higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation.
