Abstract:Ce0.67Zr0.33 02, Ce0.67Zr0.3302-Al203 and -y-Al203 supported Pd catalysts (designated as Pd/CZ, Pd/CZA and Pd/Al2 03) have been characterized by XRD, CO chemisorption, in situ DRIFTS, XPS, HRTEM, H2-TPR, 02-TPSR and catalytic performance test. The results show that the small Pd0, particles dispersed in CZ would promote the conversion of HC, CO and NO2, while the Pd0, particles dispersed in Al203 promote the conversion of NO in the light-off process. Pd0, species mainly disperse on Al203-rich grains surface for fresh Pd/CZA catalyst, but easily migrate onto CZ-rich grains surface due to the strong interaction between Pd and ceria-based oxide under high temperature reaction conditions. And it promotes the thermal stability of Pd 0 species and resilience of Pd to Pd 0, therefore enhances the catalytic performance for HC, CO and NO elimination. Meanwhile, the interaction between CZ and Al203 can be enhanced after aging treatment, resulting in increasing the thermal stability of Pd/CZA catalyst. 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A Pd/CZ(NO) catalyst prepared with Pd(NO3)2 as the metal precursor exhibited the best catalytic performance for HC and CO elimination because of a higher oxygen storage capacity, abundant small Pdn clusters and a strong Pd-support interaction that facilitated electron transfer from PdOx particles to the CZ support. A Pd/CZ(NH) catalyst prepared with Pd(NH3)4(NO3)2 as the metal precursor exhibited good performance for NO and NO2 elimination due to a higher Pd dispersion, abundant bigger Pdn clusters and oxidized/metallic Pd coexistence. A Pd/CZ(Cl) catalyst prepared with H2PdCl4 as the metal precursor exhibited low catalytic activity due to a low Pd dispersion, weak Pd-support interaction, and the trace amount of CeOCl which inhibited oxygen vacancy creation. However, it showed good thermal stability, and benefited when an aging treatment removed the residual chlorine species and also promoted the interaction between PdOx and the support.
Investigation on properties of Pd/CeO2-ZrO2-Pr2O3 catalysts with different Ce/Zr molar ratios and its application for automotive emission control

Abstract:Pd/CeO2-ZrO2-Pr2O3 (CZP) catalysts with different Ce/Zr molar ratios were synthesized and systematically investigated by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, XPS, H2-TPR, OSC and in situ DRIFTS techniques. The results of XPS, in situ DRIFTS, etc., show that the number of oxygen vacancies increases with the increasing Zr content and thus leads to the enhanced metal-support interaction and the accelerative formation rate of nitrate, formate, acetate and carbonate species, resulting in improving catalytic performance for HC and NO elimination, especially for Pd/CZP catalysts with Ce/Zr from 1/2 to 1/3. While Pd/CZP catalysts with higher OSC value (Ce/Zr=4/1-1/2) exhibit better catalytic activity of CO and NO2 elimination. An appropriate concentration of Zr facilitates the diffusion of Pr from the surface to the bulk of the CZP supports, thus forming more homogeneous CZP solid solution and improving the structure/textual stability, which promotes the thermal stability of catalysts. Pd/CZP catalysts with Ce/Zr from 2/1 to 1/2 exhibit good thermal stability.

Abstract:Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 catalyst was pretreated in different atmosphere respectively, and characterized by CO chemical adsorption, XPS, HR-TEM, H2-TPR, Raman, OSC and in situ DRIFTs to investigate the effect of the structure properties of PdOx species on the catalytic performance for CO, HC and NOx elimination. The results show that Pd/CZ catalyst pretreated in air atmosphere has higher oxidation activity of HC due to having high Pd dispersion and strong interaction between PdOx and CZ support. Pd/CZ-H catalyst pretreated in reducing atmosphere exhibits better catalytic performance of NOx elimination because of having relatively big Pd particle size, more Pd species in metallic state and higher concentration of oxygen vacancies. While for the Pd/CZ-RG catalyst pretreated in reactant atmosphere, strong adsorption of HC species on the surface of catalysts would lead to a part of active sites being covered, which inhibits HC and NO conversions.

Abstract:A series of La-Al2O3 supported Pd-Ce close-coupled catalysts were synthesized by a co-adsorption impregnation method and subsequently investigated. In the case of fresh catalysts, the presence of an optimal concentration of ceria obviously promoted the catalytic activity during HC and NOx eliminations, owing to the interaction between the palladium oxide species (PdOx) and CeO2 that improves the oxidation of Pd0 to PdO and enhances the adsorption of nitrite/nitrates and isocyanate intermediate species on the support under reaction conditions. Pd-Ce(2.0)/La-Al2O3 catalyst (where 2.0 is the wt% of CeO2) exhibited the highest catalytic activity for HC and NO eliminations. Following aging at 1100 °C, the operational window for HC and NOx conversions was broadened and the thermal stability of the catalysts was also improved as a result of the presence of an appropriate quantity of ceria (2.0–4.0 wt%). The enhanced interactions between PdOx and CeO2 evidently led to the formation of a Pd-O-Ce system, stabilizing PdOx species with smaller particle sizes at high temperatures. This result is significant since it suggests a means of improving the catalytic performance of Pd-only close-coupled catalysts during automobile exhaust elimination.

Abstract:This study reports a significant impact of the calcination temperature on the performances of Pd/Al2O3-CeO2 Three-Way-Catalysts to treat exhaust from natural gas fueled vehicles. Calcination from 550 degrees C to 950 degrees C led to Pd particles in the range 1.9-8.5 nm. It was found that PdO can be reduced to more active Pd-0 species under stoichiometric NGV conditions. More specifically, the 1.9 nm Pd particles, developing stronger Pd-Ce interaction were found more reducible and correspond to enhanced catalytic properties towards methane abatement. At high calcination temperature, corresponding to larger Pd particles, the deterioration of the Pd-Ce interface is accompanied with lower TOF jointly with higher activation barriers. Accordingly, the Pd-0-PdO interaction becomes prevalent to activate methane. Based on these observations, it was concluded that Pd-0-Ce and Pd-0-PdO interface related to the Pd particle size may be considered as criteria for identifying the performance of Pd-based NGV catalysts.
Preparation of Cex Zr1-x-AI mixed oxides and investigation of the palladium-only three-way catalytic performance

Abstract:The CexZr1-x-Al mixed oxides were prepared by the sol-gel method and the super-critical dryness method.The samples were characterized by means of XRD and BET techniques,and the three-way catalytic performance of their supported-Pd catalysts was also investigated.It was found that the samples calcined at 1 100 ℃ for 4 h still had large specific surface area(>95 m2·g-1) and no α-Al2O3 was formed.Based on the TEM and the investigation of catalytic performance,the catalysts containing cerium-zirconium solid solution had good catalytic activity and thermal stability,and the three-way catalytic performance of Pd/Ce0.75Zr0.25-Al was best.The catalyst Pd/Ce0.75Zr0.25-Al had low light-up temperatures(T20%) of 140 ℃,268 ℃,340 ℃ and 175 ℃ for CO,C3H6,NO and NO2,respectively,and the temperatures at which the reactants were converted fully were only raised by 10-20 ℃ after thermal aging.

Abstract:Four different synthetic routes ( co- precipitation, oxidation- precipitation, citric acid sol- gel and reversed microemulsion) are adopted to prepare barium modified Pd/ CeO2- ZrO2 catalysts and their catalytic activity towards CO, HC and NOx conversions is studied. The surface and bulk properties of these catalysts are characterized via XRD, N-2 adsorption, XPS, UV- Raman, H-2- TPR, and in situ DRIFTS. The catalyst prepared via the co- precipitation method exhibits the optimum three- way catalytic behavior, which is mainly due to its superior redox ability, whereas the oxidation- precipitation synthesis renders the catalyst with the best homogeneity and thermal resistance. However, for the catalyst prepared via the sol- gel route, its worst NOx reduction capacity is verified by the scarce appearance of negatively charged Pd-0- N=O delta- species, which is related to the faster dissociation of NO based on in situ DRIFTS, and the abundance of surface CO- Pd+ species reveals its unsatisfactory deep oxidizability of the HC reactant.

Abstract:Ce(0.67)Zr(0.33)O(2) doped with iron oxide was prepared and the corresponding Pd-only three-way catalysts were examined and characterized. Pd/CZFe(1%) catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance for CO, HC, NO and NO(2) elimination and the widest operation window. The doping of iron oxide with 1% loading suggests the formation of more homogeneous Ce-Zr-Fe-O ternary solid solution, which seems to facilitate the reduction of Ce(4+)→Ce(3+) or the formation of oxygen vacancy and to promote the interaction between Ce-Zr and Fe. Moreover, the Ce redox behaviour for surface reduction suggests depending not only on the formation of homogeneous Ce-Zr-Fe-O but also on the surface property of the sample. The increase in the concentration of oxygen vacancies under all atmospheres for CZFe(1%) sample also results in the enhancement of oxygen storage complete capacity.
Steam Treatment Promotion on the Performance of Pt/CeO2 Three-Way Catalysts for Emission Control of Natural Gas-Fueled Vehicles

Abstract:Three-way catalyst (TWC) is the mainstream technology for stoichiometric natural gas vehicle gas emission purification to meet the China VI emission standard for heavy-duty vehicles. Due to the high price of Pd-Rh TWC widely used at present, it is of great significance to develop cheaper Pt-only catalysts as substitutes. However, there are few studies on Pt-only TWC, especially for natural gas vehicles. It remains a formidable challenge to develop Pt-only TWC with excellent activity and stability. In this study, we significantly improved the catalytic performance of Pt/CeO2 TWC through thermal treatment, especially steam treatment at 800 °C, and used XRD, TEM, H2-TPR, and XPS techniques to investigate how Pt/CeO2 can be activated via these treatments. Our results suggested that after these treatments, CeO2 crystallites sintered slightly, while platinum particles remained highly dispersed. Moreover, these treatments also weakened the Pt-CeO2 interaction, promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies in CeO2 support, and generated a new type of active surface oxygen in the vicinity of Ptδ+, thus improving the activity of the catalyst. After 800 °C steam treatment, the T50 of CH4 and NO decreased by 31 and 36 °C, respectively. The results obtained in this study provide implications for the synthesis of efficient Pt-based catalysts.

Abstract:In this article, moisture-treated Pd@CeO2/Al2O3 and Pd/CeO2/Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized and applied in automotive three-way catalytic (TWC) reactions. Compared to the Pd/CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst, the Pd@CeO2/Al2O3 core-shell catalyst had better TWC activities. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) showed excess PdO2 on the Pd and CeO2 interface of Pd@CeO2 nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra analysis demonstrated the generation of the hydroperoxyl (*OOH) groups on the surface of the Pd@CeO2 nanoparticle. CO-diffuse reflectance Fourier transform (DRIFT) measurement suggested that the CO adsorbed on *OOH species contributed to the formation of CO2 and intermediate *COOH. NO-DRIFT results showed that more *NO2 species appeared on the moisture-treated Pd@CeO2 nanoparticle, which was the main active site in the automobile TWC reaction. These were the main factors contributing to the moisture-treated Pd@CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst's high catalytic activities. The collected data revealed the crucial role of the co-promoting effect of moisture and core-shell interface on TWC reactions over the Pd@CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst, which could be applied to other catalytic reactions.
Steam Effects over Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 Three-Way Catalyst

Abstract:In the purification process of automobile exhaust, existing water plays an important role as an oxidant, which converts CO and hydrocarbons (HCs) by the water-gas shift (WGS) and the steam reforming (SR) reactions, respectively, especially at high temperatures. Meanwhile it is major component of the exhaust which can affect significantly the thermal stability of the three-way catalyst. Activity experiments were carried out close to the real operation conditions (GHSV, concentration, etc.) with a Pd/Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 catalyst supplying information on the CO and C3H8 oxidation reactions in feedstream formed by different reactant combinations. The obtained results showed that the activity of the CO and C3H8 oxidation was promoted by the addition of steam due to the WGS and SR reactions. The WGS and SR reaction were competitive under oxygen-lean conditions. The kinetic analysis was considered for WGS and SR reactions.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Probing BaO Doping Effect on the Structure and Catalytic Performance of Pd/CexZr1–xO2 (x = 0.2–0.8) Catalysts for Automobile Emission Control

Abstract:Pd/CeO2-ZrO2-BaO (Pd/CZB) catalysts with 5.0 wt % BaO and different CeO2/ZrO2 molar ratio were synthesized. The modification with BaO significantly promotes the catalytic activity of HC and NO conversions when the molar ratio of CeO2 to ZrO2 is 2/1, because the substitution of Cex+/Zr4+ ions by Ba2+ promotes the formation of oxygen vacancy as revealed by XRD refinement analysis results and improves the mobility of active oxygen as a result of electronic and structural modifications. Among the Ba-doped catalysts, the crystalline form of the CZB supports gradually transform from cubic and pseudocubic to stable tetragonal phase as the increase of ZrO2 content. Meanwhile, the Raman results show that addition of moderate ZrO2 promotes the formation of structural defects, resulting in higher OSC and NOx storage efficiency. On the other hand, the introduction of moderate ZrO2 facilitates the dissociative adsorption of NO and promotes the deep oxidation of HC. Therefore, Pd/CZB catalysts with CeO2/ZrO2 molar ratio of 3/1-1/1, especially Pd/CZB21, show a much better catalytic activity of HC and NOx eliminations and a wider dynamic operation window. Zr-rich catalysts present worse catalytic activity of CO oxidation compared with Ce-rich catalysts, which is mainly arising from the decreased amount of active sites. After thermal aging treatment, Zr-rich catalysts (CeO2/ZrO2 < 1) undergo less severe deterioration of the catalytic activity compared with Ce-rich catalysts (CeO2/ZrO2 >= 1) as a result of better thermostability, and Pd/CZB11-a presents the best catalytic performance and widest dynamic operation window.
Effect of synthesis method on the properties of ceria–zirconia modified alumina and the catalytic performance of its supported Pd-only three-way catalyst

Abstract:In this paper, five types of ceria–zirconia modified alumina (CZA) were prepared by co-precipitation with supercritical drying (CPS), co-precipitation with common drying (CPC), sol–gel (SG), micro-emulsion (ME) and impregnation (IM) methods, respectively. The corresponding supported Pd-only three-way catalysts (TWC) were also prepared and evaluated in the simulative gasoline engine exhaust. The influence of different preparation methods on the physicochemical properties of CZA mixed oxide and its supported TWC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The redox behavior was investigated with H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) experiments. The results reveal that the CZA mixed oxides derived from CPS and ME methods exhibit the relatively higher textural and structural properties as well as better redox behavior, which lead to the better catalytic activity and wider air-to-fuel operation window of the corresponding Pd-only three-way catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic activity, hydrothermal aging resistance, and sulfur tolerance of a Pd-Pt-based methane oxidation catalyst were evaluated in a fixed fluidized bed reactor containing simulated lean-burn natural gas vehicle exhaust gases. Zirconium-doped Pd-Pt/Al2O3 (Pd-Pt/ZrxAl(1-x)O(3+x)/2) was found to significantly improve the catalytic activity, hydrothermal aging resistance, and sulfur tolerance. Zr-modified alumina supports were prepared by co-precipitation with molar ratios of Zr to Al of 0: 1, 0.25 : 0.75, 0.5: 0.5, 0.75 : 0.25, and 1: 0. The Pd-Pt bimetallic catalysts containing 1.5% (w, mass fraction) Pd and 0.3% (w) Pt supported on the above-modified composite supports were prepared by the co-impregnating method. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction(XRD), H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), O-2 temperature-programmed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the crystallinity of the samples, dispersion of the active component, number of Pd2+ species, and electron density around Pd2+ species increase after addition of ZrO2 to Al2O3 supports. Compared with the activity results of Pd-Pt/Al2O3 and Pd-Pt/ZrO2 catalysts after different pretreatment conditions, the performance of the catalyst is greatly enhanced by adding ZrO2. in the Al2O3 supports, and Pd-Pt/Zr0.5Al0.5O1.75 shows the best catalytic activity, strongest hydrothermal aging resistance, and highest sulfur tolerance among the investigated catalysts.

Abstract:The combined route of stoichiometric combustion + three-way catalysis (TWC) is an era choice for natural gas vehicles (NGVs) to actively respond to the environmental protection requirements of gradual pressurization. However, synergistic and efficient purification of exhaust gas in a humid atmosphere is still one of the key challenges. The catalytic performance of phosphorus-doped and phosphorus-free CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 (CZA)-supported Pd-based model catalysts for CH4, NO, and CO was evaluated in a practical operating environment close to stoichiometric combustion. Phosphorus doping induces the formation of abundant surface lattice oxygen, promotes the active migration of interface charges, and improves the catalytic activity of the Pd/CeO2-ZrO2-P2O5-Al2O3 (Pd/CZPA) catalyst for CH4 and NO conversion. However, the catalytic oxidation of CO strongly depends on the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles, regardless of whether phosphorus is added or not. This research provides a useful guidance for the development of new pure palladium TWC for NGVs, regional environmental governance, as well as re-examining the value of phosphorus.

Abstract:To investigate the correlation of activity and chemical state of Pd species in the three-way catalytic reaction, the supported Pd catalysts were prepared by using CeO2 calcined at different temperatures as supports. It turned out that the chemical state of Pd could severely affect the catalytic activity of Pd/CeO2, which depended on the CeO2 properties and the interaction between Pd and CeO2. With increasing CeO2 calcination temperature from 500 to 1200 °C, the state of Pd gradually transferred from Pd4+ as PdxCe1-xO2-σ to Pd2+ as PdO due to the decreased interaction between Pd and CeO2. Meanwhile, the TOFs of C3H8 oxidation linearly increased and the TOFs of CO oxidation showed a reversed trend, demonstrating the active states of Pd in C3H8 and CO oxidation were different. NO conversion was correlated to the activity of CO oxidation in low-temperature zone and C3H8 oxidation in high-temperature zone during the three-way catalytic reaction. Among them, Pd/CeO2(500) showed the highest CO oxidation activity and low-temperature NO conversion due to the enhanced adsorption ability of CO and NO. The existence of PdO on the surface of high-temperature calcined CeO2 facilitated C3H8 activation and reaction with surface nitrate/nitrite, which promoted NO conversion in high temperature.
