Abstract:Topological insulators are insulating in the bulk but feature conducting states on their surfaces. Standard methods for probing their topological properties largely involve probing the surface, even though topological invariants are defined via the bulk band structure. Here, we utilize non-hermiticy to experimentally demonstrate a topological transition in an optical system, using bulk behavior only, without recourse to surface properties. This concept is relevant for a wide range of systems beyond optics, where the surface physics is difficult to probe.

Abstract:Spin-orbit coupling, a fundamental mechanism underlying topological insulators, has been introduced to construct the latter's photonic analogs, or photonic topological insulators (PTIs). However, the intrinsic lack of electronic spin in photonic systems leads to various imperfections in emulating the behaviors of topological insulators. For example, in the recently demonstrated three-dimensional (3D) PTI, the topological surface states emerge, not on the surface of a single crystal as in a 3D topological insulator, but along an internal domain wall between two PTIs. Here, by fully abolishing spin-orbit coupling, we design and demonstrate a 3D PTI whose topological surface states are self-guided on its surface, without extra confinement by another PTI or any other cladding. The topological phase follows the original Fu's model for the topological crystalline insulator without spin-orbit coupling. Unlike conventional linear Dirac cones, a unique quadratic dispersion of topological surface states is directly observed with microwave measurement. Our work opens routes to the topological manipulation of photons at the outer surface of photonic bandgap materials.

Abstract:With the development of ultrafast optics and the in- depth research on topological insulator materials represented by Bi2Te3, the research on applying topological insulator thin films to ultrafast lasers and devices has developed rapidly, and a series of research results have been published in recent years. This paper reviews the research on ultrafast lasers and devices based on topological insulator materials by starting from structure characteristics and preparation methods, introducing their unique optical and optoelectronic properties,summarizing the research on their applications in ultrafast lasers and optical devices, as well as reviewing and discussing the achievements and challenges in this field. We also provide an outlook on further development directions on the application of topological insulator thin film materials in ultrafast optics.

Abstract:Using femtosecond time- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the nonequilibrium dynamics of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. We studied p-type Bi2Se3, in which the metallic Dirac surface state and bulk conduction bands are unoccupied. Optical excitation leads to a meta-stable population at the bulk conduction band edge, which feeds a nonequilibrium population of the surface state persisting for >10ps. This unusually long-lived population of a metallic Dirac surface state with spin texture may present a channel in which to drive transient spin-polarized currents.

We observe a gigantic optical lifetime exceeding 4 mu s (1 mu s = 10(-6) s) for the surface states in Bi2Te2 Se, whereas the lifetime in most topological insulators, such as Bi2Se3, has been limited to a few picoseconds (1 ps = 10(-12) s). Moreover, we discover a surface photovoltage, a shift of the chemical potential of the Dirac surface states, as large as 100 mV. Our results demonstrate a rare platform to study charge excitation and relaxation in energy and momentum space in a two-dimensional system.
Ultrafast helicity control of surface currents in topological insulators with near-unity fidelity

Abstract:In recent years, a class of solid state materials, called three-dimensional topological insulators, has emerged. In the bulk, a topological insulator behaves like an ordinary insulator with a band gap. At the surface, conducting gapless states exist showing remarkable properties such as helical Dirac dispersion and suppression of backscattering of spin-polarized charge carriers. The characterization and control of the surface states via transport experiments is often hindered by residual bulk contributions yet at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we show that surface currents in Bi2Se3 can be controlled by circularly polarized light on a picosecond time scale with a fidelity near unity even at room temperature. We re-veal the temporal separation of such ultrafast helicity-dependent surface currents from photo-induced thermoelectric and drift currents in the bulk. Our results uncover the functionality of ultrafast optoelectronic devices based on surface currents in topological insulators.

Abstract:Topological insulators represent a new quantum state of matter which is characterized by peculiar edge or surface states that show up due to a topological character of the bulk wave functions. This review presents a pedagogical account on topological insulator materials with an emphasis on basic theory and materials properties. After presenting a historical perspective and basic theories of topological insulators, it discusses all the topological insulator materials discovered as of May 2013, with some illustrative descriptions of the developments in materials discoveries in which the author was involved. A summary is given for possible ways to confirm the topological nature in a candidate material. Various synthesis techniques as well as the defect chemistry that are important for realizing bulk-insulating samples are discussed. Characteristic properties of topological insulators are discussed with an emphasis on transport properties. In particular, the Dirac fermion physics and the resulting peculiar quantum oscillation patterns are discussed in detail. It is emphasized that proper analyses of quantum oscillations make it possible to unambiguously identify surface Dirac fermions through transport measurements. The prospects of topological insulator materials for elucidating novel quantum phenomena that await discovery conclude the review.

Abstract:We discuss the ultrafast evolution of the surface electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ following a femtosecond laser excitation. Using time and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we provide a direct real-time visualisation of the transient carrier population of both the surface states and the bulk conduction band. We find that the thermalization of the surface states is initially determined by interband scattering from the bulk conduction band, lasting for about 0.5 ps; subsequently, few ps are necessary for the Dirac cone non-equilibrium electrons to recover a Fermi-Dirac distribution, while their relaxation extends over more than 10 ps. The surface sensitivity of our measurements makes it possible to estimate the range of the bulk-surface interband scattering channel, indicating that the process is effective over a distance of 5 nm or less. This establishes a correlation between the nanoscale thickness of the bulk charge reservoir and the evolution of the ultrafast carrier dynamics in the surface Dirac cone.
Observation of Floquet-Bloch States on the Surface of a Topological Insulator

Abstract:The unique electronic properties of the surface electrons in a topological insulator are protected by time-reversal symmetry. Circularly polarized light naturally breaks time-reversal symmetry, which may lead to an exotic surface quantum Hall state. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that an intense ultrashort midinfrared pulse with energy below the bulk band gap hybridizes with the surface Dirac fermions of a topological insulator to form Floquet-Bloch bands. These photon-dressed surface bands exhibit polarization-dependent band gaps at avoided crossings. Circularly polarized photons induce an additional gap at the Dirac point, which is a signature of broken time-reversal symmetry on the surface. These observations establish the Floquet-Bloch bands in solids and pave the way for optical manipulation of topological quantum states of matter.

Abstract:Topological photonics provides a new opportunity for the examination of novel topological properties of matter, in which the energy band theory and ideas in topology are utilized to manipulate the propagation of photons. Since the discovery of topological insulators in condensed matter, researchers have studied similar topological effects in photonics.Topological photonics can lead to materials that support the robust unidirectional propagation of light without back reflections. This ideal transport property is unprecedented in traditional optics and may lead to radical changes in integrated optical devices. In this review, we present the exciting developments of topological photonics and focus on several prominent milestones of topological phases in photonics, such as topological insulators, topological semimetals, and higher-order topological phases. We conclude with the prospect of novel topological effects and their applications in topological photonics.

Abstract:We use an ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy to study quasiparticle (QP) dynamics in a topological insulator LaBi. Temperature-dependent optical measurements have been carried out, by which we observed nearly constant fast component (with a lifetime of 0.15 ps) and slow component (with a lifetime of 1.5 ps) for the whole range from 10 K to 295 K. The laser fluence dependence result shows that there is no saturation for the QP dynamics up to 3.3 mJ /cm2. Moreover, an E g mode transverse optical (TO) coherent phonon has also been observed, with a frequency of 2.8 THz. Our results provide for the first time the ultrafast dynamics information of both the QPs and coherent phonons in a nodal line topological material.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the broadband response, limited optical absorption at a particular wavelength hinders the development of optoelectronics based on Dirac fermions. Heterostructures of graphene and various semiconductors have been explored for this purpose, while non-ideal interfaces often limit the performance. The topological insulator (TI) is a natural hybrid system, with the surface states hosting high-mobility Dirac fermions and the small-bandgap semiconducting bulk state strongly absorbing light. In this work, we show a large photocurrent response from a field effect transistor device based on intrinsic TI Sn–Bi 1.1 Sb 0.9 Te 2 S (Sn-BSTS). The photocurrent response is non-volatile and sensitively depends on the initial Fermi energy of the surface state, and it can be erased by controlling the gate voltage. Our observations can be explained with a remote photo-doping mechanism, in which the light excites the defects in the bulk and frees the localized carriers to the surface state. This photodoping modulates the surface state conductivity without compromising the mobility, and it also significantly modify the quantum Hall effect of the surface state. Our work thus illustrates a route to reversibly manipulate the surface states through optical excitation, shedding light into utilizing topological surface states for quantum optoelectronics.

Surface Plasmon Polaritons in Topological Insulators

Abstract:We study surface plasmon polaritons on a topological insulator-vacuum interface. When the time-reversal symmetry is broken due to ferromagnetic coupling, the surface states exhibit a magneto-optical Kerr effect. This effect gives rise to a novel transverse-type surface plasmon polariton, in addition to the longitudinal type. In specific, these two types contain three different channels, corresponding to the pole of the determinant of the Fresnel reflection matrix. All three channels of the surface plasmon polaritons display tight confinement and a long lifetime and show strong light-matter coupling with a dipole emitter.

Abstract:Topological systems are inherently robust to disorder and continuous perturbations, resulting in dissipation-free edge transport of electrons in quantum solids, or reflectionless guiding of photons and phonons in classical wave systems characterized by topological invariants. Realization of robust, lossless topological insulators in the technologically important terahertz (THz) frequency range has drawn immense attention. In this paper, we propose a Kagome lattice structure that supports topological edge states with valley-dependent transport. Optical topological insulators are subsequently fabricated, in which mirror symmetry is broken and degenerate states are lifted at K(K′) valleys in the band structure. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that four types of edge states can be obtained. The performance of the fabricated topological waveguides is characterized with THz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS). Nearly identical THz wave transmission in the 0.437–0.453-THz range is verified with a straight-line topological waveguide and Z -shaped waveguides with multiple sharp turning corners, which quantitatively illustrate the strong backscattering suppression effects from the nontrivial topology edge states of the structures. Particularly, the THz TDS measurements provide important extra time-domain information about the topological waveguiding mode, which is generally unavailable from previous topological insulator investigations solely replying on power spectrum measurements. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.064025 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Three-dimensional topological insulators are characterized by insulating bulk state and metallic surface state involving relativistic Dirac fermions which are responsible for exotic quantum phenomena and potential applications in spintronics and quantum computations. It is essential to understand how the Dirac fermions interact with other electrons, phonons and disorders. Here we report super-high resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies on the Dirac fermion dynamics in the prototypical Bi-2(Te,Se)(3) topological insulators. We have directly revealed signatures of the electron-phonon coupling and found that the electron-disorder interaction dominates the scattering process. The Dirac fermion dynamics in Bi-2(Te3-xSex) topological insulators can be tuned by varying the composition, x, or by controlling the charge carriers. Our findings provide crucial information in understanding and engineering the electron dynamics of the Dirac fermions for fundamental studies and potential applications.

Abstract:Inspired by the exciting discovery of topological insulators in condensed-state physics, some topo-logical physics phenomena, such as integer quantum Hall effect, quantum spin Hall effect, topological semi-metals and higher order topological insulators, have successively realized in photonic system. Thanks to the clean energy band, simple design and accurate production of samples, the optical system has gradually become an important platform for studying physical topological models and novel topological phenomena. Topological photonics provides new methods to manipulate light fields and photons. The topological protected edge states can realize the propagation of photons which immune to material defects and impurity. Such ideal transport states are unprecedented in traditional optics, which may lead to radical changes in novel integrated optical devices. In this review, based on the two-dimensional optical system, we briefly introduce the exciting developments of topological photonics, such as photonic integer quantum Hall effect, photonic quantum spin Hall effect, photonic Floquet topological insulators, topological Anderson insulators and photonic higher order topological insulators. We focus on the topological insulators mentioned above and its topological model and novel topological phenomena. Finally, we conclude with the novel topological effects in optics and their applications in novel optical device.
Ultrafast Nonequilibrium Dynamics in Two-dimensional Quantum Spin-Hall Materials

Abstract:We develop the theoretical framework of nonequilibrium ultrafast photonics in monolayer quantum spin-Hall insulators supporting a multitude of topological states. In these materials, ubiquitous strong light-matter interactions in the femtosecond scale lead to non-adiabatic quantum dynamics, resulting in topology-dependent nonlinear optoelectronic transport phenomena. We investigate the mechanism driving topological Dirac fermions interacting with strong ultrashort light pulses and uncover various experimentally accessible physical quantities that encode fingerprints of the quantum material's topological electronic state from the high harmonic generated spectrum. Our work sets the theoretical cornerstones to realize the full potential of time-resolved harmonic spectroscopy for identifying topological invariants in two-dimensional quantum spin-Hall solid state systems.

Topological Insulators for High-Performance Terahertz to Infrared Applications

Abstract:Topological insulators in the Bi2Se3 family have an energy gap in the bulk and a gapless surface state consisting of a single Dirac cone. Low-frequency optical absorption due to the surface state is universally determined by the fine-structure constant. When the thickness of these three-dimensional topological insulators is reduced, they become quasi-two-dimensional insulators with enhanced absorbance. The two-dimensional insulators can be topologically trivial or nontrivial depending on the thickness, and we predict that the optical absorption is larger for topological nontrivial case compared with the trivial case. Since the three-dimensional topological insulator surface state is intrinsically gapless, we propose its potential application in wide bandwidth, high-performance photodetection covering a broad spectrum ranging from terahertz to infrared. The performance of photodetection can be dramatically enhanced when the thickness is reduced to several quintuple layers with a widely tunable band gap depending on the thickness.
Lightwave-driven electrons in a Floquet topological insulator

Abstract:Topological insulators offer unique opportunities for novel electronics and quantum phenomena. However, intrinsic material limitations often restrict their applications and practical implementation. Over a decade ago it was predicted that a time-periodic perturbation can generate out-of-equilibrium states known as Floquet topological insulators (FTIs), hosting topologically protected transport and anomalous Hall physics, and opening routes to optically tunable bandstructures and devices compatible with petahertz electronics. Although such states have not yet been directly observed, indirect signatures such as the light-induced anomalous Hall effect were recently measured. Thus far, much remained experimentally unclear and fundamentally unknown about solid-state FTI and whether they can be employed for electronics. Here we demonstrate coherent control of photocurrents in light-dressed graphene. Circularly-polarized laser pulses dress the graphene band structure to obtain an FTI, and phase-locked second harmonic pulses drive electrons in the FTI. This approach allows us to measure resulting all-optical anomalous Hall photocurrents, FTI-valley-polarized currents, and photocurrent circular dichroism, all phenomena that put FTIs on equal footing with equilibrium topological insulators. We further present an intuitive description for the sub-optical-cycle light-matter interaction, revealing dynamical symmetry selection rules for photocurrents. All measurements are supported by strong agreement with ab-initio and analytic theory. Remarkably, the photocurrents show a strong sub-cycle phase-sensitivity that can be employed for ultrafast control in topotronics and spectroscopy. Our work connects Floquet and topological physics with attoscience and valleytronics, and goes beyond band structure engineering by initiating lightwave-driven dynamics in FTI states.
