Abstract:In this paper, ZnFe2O4 nanotubes with hollow structure were synthesized by a simple electrospinning method. Humidity sensor was fabricated based on these nanotubes. The electrical measurements show excellent performance in humidity sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, nanofibers composed of polyaniline, silicon-containing polyelectrolytes and PEO were deposited on interdigitated gold electrodes by electrospinning to construct a humidity nanosensor. The resistance of the nanosensor changed for three orders of magnitude in the humidity range of 22 -95% RH, indicating a high sensitivity. In addition, it showed good linearity (R2=0.966) on a semi-logarithmic scale, very small hysteresis (2% RH) and fast response time (t90%: 7s and 19s for adsorption and desorption, respectively). Moreover, the decoration of electrode with polyelectrolyte is proved to effectively improve the contact between the nanofibers and the gold electrode.

Abstract:Ni(SO4)(0.3)(OH)(1.4) nanobelts were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Humidity sensors based on Ni(SO4)(0.3)(OH)(1.4) nanobelts were fabricated and exhibited high sensitivity and a fast response. They also showed good long-term stability. The high performance could be related to the high surface-to-volume ratio of nanobelts and the chemical composition of Ni(SO4)(0.3)(OH)(1.4).

Abstract:Benefiting from the development of nanomaterials synthesis technology, the performance of many electronic devices, including humidity sensors, has been improved greatly. However, the synthesis of nanomaterials usually involves complex processes, expensive raw materials and even toxic reagents. Herein, the natural nanomaterials of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are deliberately selected for the fabrication of high-performance humidity sensor. Characterization results show that the HNTs have good hydrophilicity, hollow tubular nanostructure and large specific surface area, which contribute to humidity sensing performance of the humidity sensor. Further, the humidity sensor based on HNTs is fabricated and its humidity sensing properties are tested at the room temperature (25 degrees C). The results show that the impedance variation of the HNTs humidity sensor is five orders of magnitude within the humidity range from 0% to 91.5% relative humidity (RH) at the optimum working frequency (100 Hz), and its response time is only about 0.7 s. Notably, the HNTs humidity sensor exhibits wide humidity detection range of 0-91.5% RH, very low RH (7.2%) response characteristic and good linear responses at 0-28.8% and 28.8-91.5% RH. This work provides a simple, low-cost and environmental-friendly strategy for fabricating high-performance humidity sensor by exploring the natural nanomaterials like HNTs.

Abstract:Humidity sensors, serving as essential electronic components for monitoring humidity levels, show widespread applications in environmental and human body related humidity detection. The development of nanomaterials has provided numerous opportunities in many fields, including humidity sensors. Electrospinning, as a simple technique for fabricating nanofibers, has garnered increasing attention in the field of electronics. Among them, electrospun nanofibers have shown promising prospects in high-performance humidity sensors due to their large specific surface area and high porosity. After years of development, although significant achievements have been made in electrospun nanofiber-based humidity (ENH) sensors, many challenges still exist in this field. This review article aims to systematically discuss the latest developments in ENH sensors. Firstly, we provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of the electrospinning technique and humidity sensors. Secondly, the research progress of ENH sensors based on different materials (polymer nanofibers, oxide nanofibers, and composite nanofibers) and device types/working mechanisms (resistance, capacitance, impedance, frequency, and voltage/power generation) is reviewed and discussed. Thirdly, the emerging applications of ENH sensors in human body related humidity detection are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future development trends of ENH sensors are analyzed from different aspects. We hope that this review will offer valuable insights and guidance for future research on ENH sensors.

Abstract:High performance self-powered/active humidity sensors have been fabricated from Fe-doped ZnO nanoarrays. When the relative humidity (RH) is 60% at room temperature, the piezoelectric output voltage of the humidity sensor under compressive force decreases from 0.85 (at 5% RH) to 0.21V. The self-powered humidity sensing performance of Fe-doped ZnO nanoarrays is much higher than that of undoped ZnO nanoarrays. Fe3+ ions have small ionic radius and many positive charges (+3), thus the doping of Fe can lead to a high charge density, which can probably result in a large amount of adsorbed water molecules on the surface of Fe-doped ZnO NWs, enhancing the screening effect and decreasing the piezoelectric output. The present results demonstrate a new material system for high-performance self-powered/active humidity sensors.

Abstract:Crosslinked and quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (QC-P4VP) nanofibers have been fabricated via electro-spinning followed by reaction with 1-4-dibromobutane. Subsequent decoration of the nanofibers with Ag nanoparticles by in-situ reduction obtained a nanostructured composite humidity sensing material. The nanofibers and the composites were characterized by FT-IR and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the morphology and humidity sensing properties of the nanofibers could be greatly modified by adding poly(vinyl butyral) into the electrospinning solution. Moreover, the decoration with Ag nanoparticles effectively reduced the impedance of the composite under dry atmosphere, and facilitated the measurement of low humidity. Under optimized conditions, the composite presented high response magnitude to humidity, fast response (t(90%) of 16 s an 26 s for response and recovery, respectively), small hysteresis (similar to 2.8%RH), good sensing repeatability and the capability of detecting very low humidity (similar to 3.6%RH), representing much improvement over QC-P4VP nano fibers alone. The complex impedance spectra of the composites under different humidity levels were measured, and the sensing mechanism was explored. It is proposed that the highly desirable humidity sensing properties of the composite result from its balanced hydrophilicity and the distinct nanostructure.

Abstract:One-dimensional SnO₂- and Li⁺-doped SnO₂ porous nanofibers were easily fabricated via electrospinning and a subsequent calcination procedure for ultrafast humidity sensing. Different Li dopant concentrations were introduced to investigate the dopant's role in sensing performance. The response properties were studied under different relative humidity levels by both statistic and dynamic tests. The best response was obtained with respect to the optimal doping of Li⁺ into SnO₂ porous nanofibers with a maximum 15 times higher response than that of pristine SnO₂ porous nanofibers, at a relative humidity level of 85%. Most importantly, the ultrafast response and recovery time within 1 s was also obtained with the 1.0 wt % doping of Li⁺ into SnO₂ porous nanofibers at 5 V and at room temperature, benefiting from the co-contributions of Li-doping and the one-dimensional porous structure. This work provides an effective method of developing ultrafast sensors for practical applications-especially fast breathing sensors.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANi) nanofiber humidity sensors were prepared by electrospinning (ES) from the N,N-dimethylformamide solution of PANi, poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). Morphologies of the electrospun nanofibers prepared under different ES conditions were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Formation of beads in the nanofibers was found to greatly affect their adhesion to the substrates and the nanostructures. By modulating the composition of ES solution, PANi nanofibers with beads not only showed good adhesion to the electrode and thus good electrical contact, but also maintained relatively high specific surface area. Furthermore, hydrophilicity of the nanofibers was modified by adjusting the ratio of PVB to PEO in the ES solution, which had an effect on their sensing properties. Humidity response of the nanofiber sensors was investigated by measuring their impedance at different humidity levels at room temperature. The nanofiber sensors revealed much higher sensitivity than their film counterparts (impedance changing for three orders of magnitude from 20% to 90%RH). In addition, they were featured with good sensing linearity, fast response (t90% of ∼8s and 6s for adsorption and desorption, respectively), small hysteresis (∼1%RH) and good repeatability.
Investigations on the sensing mechanism of humidity sensors based on electrospun polymer nanofibers

Abstract:Humidity sensing mechanism of sensors based on electrospun polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers was investigated. Dynamic adsorption and desorption behavior of the PANI nanofibers under different humidity levels were monitored by quartz crystal microbalance measurements and compared with their impedance response. It was found that the nanofiber sensor exhibited fast, reversible and highly sensitive impedance change as a function of water molecules adsorbed. Nyquist plots and Bode plots of the nanofiber humidity sensor under different humidity levels were obtained by electrochemical impedance spectra measurements at room temperature. An electrical equivalent circuit was established to model the impedance response to humidity variation of the nanofiber sensor. Calculated results using the model fitted quite well with the measured spectra. Exploration of the sensing mechanism was attempted by correlating the variation with humidity of three components of the equivalent circuit to the morphology of the electrospun nanofiber sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based humidity sensor has been fabricated by colloidal fin oxide (SnO2) nanowires. The SnO2 nanowires were synthesized via a colloidal process that employing SnCl4 ethanol solutions mixed with oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (OLA). The spin-coating method was chosen to deposit the sensitive film at room temperature without high-temperature sintering. Furthermore, the Cu(NO3)(2) methanol solution was used to remove the organic long chains coated on the surface of the colloidal SnO2 nanowires and expose more adsorption sites. The characterizations of the material were studied by means of FTIR, XRD, and FE-SEM. The saturated salt solution method was used to investigate the humidity sensing performance (response, recovery, repeatability, etc.) of the QCM sensor in the range of 11%-97%. The results showed that the sample with 12 h synthesis has the best humidity response. This may be attributed to the larger specific surface area which makes the material provide more adsorption sites for water molecules, and more (110) planes formed which could absorb more water molecules proved by the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation.

Abstract:LnFeO(3) (Ln = Sm, Nd, La) nanofibers are synthesized via electrospinning and the humidity sensors based on LnFeO(3) nanofibers are fabricated and measured at different relative humidity to investigate the humidity sensing properties. The optimal working frequency of LnFeO(3) nanofibers humidity sensors are all 100 Hz at which the sensors are of good linearity and high response. Compared with other LnFeO(3) nanofibers humidity sensors, SmFeO3 nanofibers humidity sensor shows the best sensitivity and the impedance variation is more than five orders of magnitude with the relative humidity changing from 11% to 95%. The response time is about 10 s and the impedance versus RH curve is of good linearity. (The linear correlation coefficient is 0.98.) The results indicate that the SmFeO3 nanofibers with low Ln-Obinding energy exhibit the best humidity sensing properties compared with others. We expect that our work has a great significance for fabricating high-performance humidity sensors.

Abstract:Thin film humidity sensors have been prepared using in situ synthesized inorganic/organic nanocomposites of sodium polystyrenesuffonate (NaPSS) and ZnO. Its humidity sensing characteristics and the sensing mechanism have been investigated by measuring the complex impedance spectra of the sensor at different humidities. The logarithm of the impedance of sensor based on composite film changes linearly by four-orders of magnitude over almost whole humidity range (11-97% RH). Furthermore, the sensor exhibits a quick response (absorption: 2 s, desorption: 2 s) and small hysteresis (less than 2% RH). The composite film shows better sensing properties than NaPSS film, such as better linearity, quicker response. Explanation to the improvement is attempted by taking into account of the composition and structure of the nanocomposites. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Electrospun nanofibers of polymer composite as a promising humidity sensitive material

Abstract:Nanofibers of a composite of a silicon-containing polyelectrolyte, polyethylene oxide and polyaniline (PANI) were obtained by electrospinning and heat treatment. The morphologies of the composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, which showed that the nanofibers with a diameter of 250–500nm formed a non-woven mat with highly porous structure. It was found that the polymer composite nanofibers showed impedance change from 6.3×106 to 2.5×104Ω with the increment of relative humidity (RH) from 22 to 97% at room temperature, exhibiting high sensitivity and good linearity on a semi-logarithmic scale. In addition, they exhibited fast and highly reversible response characterized by very small hysteresis of ∼2% RH and short response time (t90%: 7s and 19s for adsorption and desorption between 33 and 97%RH, respectively). The modification of the electrode with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) prior to the deposition of nanofibers improved their humidity response, which may be related to the enhanced contact between the nanofibers and underlying substrate. The effect of PANI on the humidity response of the composite nanofibers was also investigated, and it was found that PANI effectively decreased the impedance of the nanofibers. The electrospun polymer composite nanofibers may find applications in the preparation of high performance humidity sensors.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and fast responding humidity sensors were fabricated based on Sb-doped ZnSnO3 fine nanoparticles, which were synthesized via a dual-hydrolysis-assisted liquid precipitation reaction and subsequent hydrothermal procedure. The nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The results demonstrated that ZnSnO3 nanocubes evolved into Sb-doped ZnSnO3 nanoparticles with doping by Sb. This evolution facilitated their application in humidity sensing. At room temperature, the resistance of the humidity sensors based on Sb-doped ZnSnO3 at 30% relative humidity (RH) was 130 times greater than that in air with 85% RH. The response and recovery times were 7.5 s and 33.6 s, respectively, when the sensors were switched between 30% and 85% RH. These results are much better than those reported so far. The present results may present new opportunities for the practical application of high-performance humidity sensors at room temperature.

Abstract:Much effort has focussed on enhancing the humidity-sensing performances of humidity sensors, but their fabrication using facile and low-cost methods is also desirable. In this work, a humidity sensor based on a naturally available nanomaterial, sepiolite nanofibers (SNFs), was facilely fabricated without any expensive raw materials or complex processes. Characterization results show that SNFs have a natural slender nanofiber structure (diameter 20-50 nm) and abundant hydrophilic functional groups (-OH). The results of humidity-sensing tests show that the SNF humidity sensor has outstanding humidity-sensing properties (i.e. large response, good linearity and repeatability) within the relative humidity range from 10.9% to 91.5% at room temperature (25 °C). This work presents a moderate and cost-effective strategy for the fabrication of high-performance humidity sensors using the natural SNF nanomaterial.

Abstract:Highly aligned arrays of ZnO/TiO2 core/shell nanorods were fabricated on glass substrates by hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods cores followed by the deposition of anatase TiO2 shells in a sol-gel process. The characterization of these composite materials with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission emission microscopy (TEM) points to the formation of crystalline ZnO nanorod cores that are coated with anatase TiO2 shells. Humidity sensors based on these core/shell nanorod arrays exhibit outstanding sensitivities with capacitances varying from 10(1) to 10(6) pF over a relative humidity (RH) range of 11%-95% at room temperature, which is 1.5 and 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine TiO2 films and ZnO nanorods, respectively. Complex impedance analysis indicated that the enhanced humidity sensitivity is probably due to the high surface/volume ratio of this core/shell material in combination with the remarkable hydrophilicity of the TiO2 shell. Designing High Performance Carbon/ZnSn(OH)6-Based Humidity Sensors

Abstract:In this work, pure phase and carbon/ZnSn(OH)6 samples were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The composite sample's structure, morphology, and functional groups were investigated by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Subsequently, ZnSn(OH)6 samples were modified with different carbon contents, and their humidity-sensing properties were investigated. The introduction of carbon increased the specific surface area of pure ZnSn(OH)6 samples, thus significantly improving the sensors' humidity sensing response. The C10-ZnSn(OH)6 sensor exhibited a high response, up to three orders of magnitude, a humidity hysteresisof 13.5%, a fast response time of 3.2 s, and a recovery time of 24.4 s. The humidity sensor's possible humidity sensing mechanism was also analyzed using the AC complex impedance puissance method with a simulated equivalent circuit. These results revealed that ZnSn(OH)6 can effectively detect ambient humidity and that the introduction of carbon significantly improves its humidity-sensing performance. The study provides an effective strategy for understanding and designing ZnSn(OH)6-based humidity sensors.

Abstract:The larger surface-to-volume ratio of the hierarchical nanostructure means it has attracted considerable interest as a prototype gas sensor. Both TiO2 and SnS2 can be used as sensitive materials for humidity sensing with excellent performance. However, TiO2-SnS2 nanocomposites are rarely used in humidity detection. Therefore, in this work, a new humidity sensor was prepared by a simple one-step synthesis process based on nano-heterostructures, and the humidity sensing performance of the device was systematically characterized by much faster response/recovery behavior, better linearity and greater sensitivity compared to pure TiO2 or SnS2 nanofibers. The enhanced sensitivity of the nanoheterostructure should be attributed to its special hierarchical structure and TiO2-SnS2 heterojunction, which ultimately leads to a significant change in resistance upon water molecule exposure. In consideration of its non-complicated, cost-effective fabrication process and environmental friendliness, the TiO2-SnS2 nanoheterostructure is a hopeful candidate for humidity sensor applications.
