Abstract:Good water-resistance is indispensable for flexible humidity sensors (FHS) in practical application. In this work, a water-durable FHS was facilely fabricated by depositing the composite film of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), graphene oxide (GO) and 3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (KH560) on a substrate of poly(ethylene terephthalate) silk screen modified with polydopamine. Specifically, CMC/KH560/GO exhibited crosslinking structure and formed covalent bonds with the substrate, and interdigitated electrodes were constructed by reducing GO in the composite film via laser-direct writing. As-prepared FHS of CMC/KH560/GO showed high sensitivity (impedance decrease from 107 Omega to 105 Omega between relative humidity of 20 % and 90 %), fast response (response/recovery time of 20 s/13 s), good sensing repeatability, good long-term stability and stable response under large bending deformation. Particularly, the sensor revealed little change in the humidity response curves after immersed in water for 30 min or in sweat for 5 min, indicating excellent water-durability. The FHS could facilely distinguish breathing modes, detect skin moisture and recognize slight finger movement (as small as 1 mm) and gestures in a non-contact way, suggesting potential applications in healthcare and non-contact human-machine interactions. This work could provide references for developing advanced FHS with waterdurability for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Nanocomposite humidity sensors were fabricated by solution mixing based on reduced graphene oxide( R-GO)and quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine)(Q-P4VP). Investigations on the humidity sensing properties of the composite at room temperature revealed that R-GO effectively enhanced the conductivity of the composite under dry atmosphere,with impedance as low as 106Ω even at 2%RH. Meanwhile,it showed good humidity sensitivity and sensing linearity(R2 = 0. 995)in the low humidity range(2-15%RH). Furthermore,it registered fast response(response time for adsorption and desorption of 3 s and 25 s,respectively). The composite sensor is promising for the applications in the detection of low humidity.

Abstract:Recently, some fiber sensing applications by coating graphene oxide or reduce graphene oxide have been proposed. In this paper, a novel humidity sensor based on core-offset fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer coated graphene oxide film has been carried out. Here, we use the chemical method to deal with the surface of the fiber first, and then coated graphene oxide on the surface of the optical fiber sensing arm. The sensitivity of 0.104dB/%RH with a linear correlation coefficient of 99.61% and good stability under the relative humidity range of 30%-60% was obtained.

Abstract:Thin film humidity sensors have been prepared using in situ synthesized inorganic/organic nanocomposites of sodium polystyrenesuffonate (NaPSS) and ZnO. Its humidity sensing characteristics and the sensing mechanism have been investigated by measuring the complex impedance spectra of the sensor at different humidities. The logarithm of the impedance of sensor based on composite film changes linearly by four-orders of magnitude over almost whole humidity range (11-97% RH). Furthermore, the sensor exhibits a quick response (absorption: 2 s, desorption: 2 s) and small hysteresis (less than 2% RH). The composite film shows better sensing properties than NaPSS film, such as better linearity, quicker response. Explanation to the improvement is attempted by taking into account of the composition and structure of the nanocomposites. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The larger surface-to-volume ratio of the hierarchical nanostructure means it has attracted considerable interest as a prototype gas sensor. Both TiO2 and SnS2 can be used as sensitive materials for humidity sensing with excellent performance. However, TiO2-SnS2 nanocomposites are rarely used in humidity detection. Therefore, in this work, a new humidity sensor was prepared by a simple one-step synthesis process based on nano-heterostructures, and the humidity sensing performance of the device was systematically characterized by much faster response/recovery behavior, better linearity and greater sensitivity compared to pure TiO2 or SnS2 nanofibers. The enhanced sensitivity of the nanoheterostructure should be attributed to its special hierarchical structure and TiO2-SnS2 heterojunction, which ultimately leads to a significant change in resistance upon water molecule exposure. In consideration of its non-complicated, cost-effective fabrication process and environmental friendliness, the TiO2-SnS2 nanoheterostructure is a hopeful candidate for humidity sensor applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the relative humidity sensor properties of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene oxide/multiwalled nanotubes (GO/MWNTs) composites have been investigated. Composite sensors were fabricated by direct laser scribing and characterized using UV-vis-NIR, Raman, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopies, electron scanning microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and impedance spectroscopy (IS). These methods confirm the composite homogeneity and laser reduction of GO/MWNT with dominant GO characteristics, while ISresults analysis reveals the circuit model for rGO-GO-rGO structure and the effect of MWNT on the sensor properties. Although direct laser scribing of GO-based humidity sensor shows an outstanding response (|ΔZ|/|Z| up to 638,800%), a lack of stability and repeatability has been observed. GO/MWNT-based humidity sensors are more conductive than GO sensors and relatively less sensitive (|ΔZ|/|Z| = 163,000%). However, they are more stable in harsh humid conditions, repeatable, and reproducible even after several years of shelf-life. In addition, they have fast response/recovery times of 10.7 s and 9.3 s and an ultra-fast response time of 61 ms when abrupt humidification/dehumidification is applied by respiration. All carbon-based sensors’ overall properties confirm the advantage of introducing the GO/MWNT hybrid and laser direct writing to produce stable structures and sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, Chitosan(CS)/graphene oxide(GO)/SnO 2 composite is proposed as the sensing material of an impedance-type humidity sensor. The composite was synthesized via a facile solution mixing method. And it was formed by adding CS and SnO 2 to GO aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) were executed to characterize the structure and morphology of the composite. At room temperature, the CS/GO/SnO 2 composite shows more favorable humidity-sensing properties compared with the CS, CS/GO, and CS/SnO 2 material. The resulted sensor exhibits high response (72683%), high sensitivity (402.5 kΩ/%RH), rapid response and recovery time (8 s/8 s). Moreover, small humidity hysteresis value (<7%) under maximum impedance difference, good repeatability and long-term stability are demonstrated. Therefore, the CS/GO/SnO 2 composite is a promising candidate for humidity sensing.

Abstract:This work introduces a novel humidity sensor based on a nanocomposite material comprising graphene decorated with three-dimensional flower-like structures of zinc oxide (Gr/3D–ZnO) fabricated via a hydrothermal method with various weight percentages of graphene. The surface structure and morphology of the Gr/3D–ZnO nanocomposite were analyzed using XRD, EDS, SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of humidity on the electrical properties of the nanocomposite was also investigated. Experiment results revealed that the nanocomposite with 70 wt% of graphene provided high sensitivity (S = 446) with rapid response times (120 s) and recovery times (160 s). These results demonstrate the excellent potential of the proposed Gr/3D–ZnO nanocomposite in monitoring atmospheric humidity. A discussion on the mechanism underlying the effects of humidity on the Gr/3D–ZnO nanocomposite is also provided.

Abstract:Two polyelectrolytes, i.e., cationic poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and anionic sodium poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa), were separately mixed with graphene oxide (GO) and hydrazine in solution, and heat-treated to result in composites of PDDA/graphene (GN) and PSSNa/GN, respectively. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmittance electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Impedance-type humidity sensors were constructed by depositing the composite films onto interdigitated gold electrodes via dip-coating. The electrical response of the composite humidity sensors toward relative humidity (RH) was investigated at room temperature. It was found that the composites with higher content of GN exhibited lower impedance at low humidity levels. Both composite sensors could detect very low humidity (down to 0.2%RH), and showed good response magnitude in the low humidity range (relative impedance change of 300% and 1000% from 0.2 to 30%RH for PSSNa/GN and PDDA/GN, respectively). Moreover, the composites exhibited slight hysteresis similar to that of the polyelectrolytes alone, while their response time for desorption was even reduced. The sensing mechanism of the composites was explored by complex impedance spectra analysis, and the good sensing behavior at low humidity was proposed to the special electrical property and unique two-dimensional nanosheet structure of GN.
Fabrication of Humidity Sensors Based on Laser Scribed Graphene Oxide/SnO2 Composite Layers

Abstract:Humidity sensors have been widely applied to detect environment humidity in various fields. However, most of humidity sensors cannot provide performance needed for high sensitivity and fast response. We report one type of capacitive-type humidity sensors composed of laser-scribed graphene (LSG) as sensing electrodes and graphene oxide/tin dioxide (GO/SnO2) as a sensing layer. The LSG is reduced graphene oxide (rGO) electrodes resulted from selective reducing of GO within a GO/SnO2 composite layer by laser scribing method, and the sensing layer is the un-scribed GO/SnO2 composite. The sensor fabrication is a one-step process which is facile and cost-efficient. When a mass ratio of GO:SnO2 in the composite reaches 1:1, the humidity sensor (named as LSG-GS(1)) has the best properties than other ratios, which exhibits high sensitivity in the range of 11% - 97% relative humidity (RH). In addition, the LSG-GS(1) also has very quick response/recovery time (20 s for adsorption and 18 s for desorption) when RH changes from 23% to 84%, and very good stability after monitoring for 41 days. Such excellent performances of the humidity sensor can be attributed to synergistic effect of SnO2 and GO within the composite layer.

These findings indicate the great potential of the composite of MoS2/GO in developing the next generation of high-performance humidity sensors.

Abstract:Humidity sensors have attracted extensive attentions due to their various applications in environment monitoring, health care and internet of things. Graphene oxide has recently been exploited as a humidity sensing material because of its good hydrophilicity and excellent sensitivity. Here we report an ultra-sensitive and responsive capacitive humidity sensor using graphene oxide as sensing material. A capacitance change of ten times is observed when the relative humidity changes from 50% to 90%. The response and recovery time of the sensor are measured to be 0.066 and 0.154 s, respectively, which are several orders of magnitude shorter than conventional humidity sensors. Furthermore, its responses to flow rate, temperature and other vapors are also characterized.

Abstract:Optical fiber humidity sensors have sparked enormous interests in many fields because of their excellent features. However, it remains a great challenge to balance sensitivity, humidity response, temperature crosstalk, and wet hysteresis for real-world application. To overcome this trade-off, an optical fiber humidity sensor is developed here by coating functional graphene oxide (GO)/polyelectrolyte nanocomposite film on the excessively tilted fiber grating (ex-TFG), in which GO/polyelectrolyte nanocomposite film is employed for enhancing the hydrophilicity and accelerating the adsorption/desorption of water molecule, while the ex-TFG is utilized for improving the sensitivity of refractive index and eliminating the crosstalk of temperature. By this design, optical fiber humidity sensors achieve high sensitivity, rapid response and recovery, low hysteresis, and temperature crosstalk as well as excellent repeatability and stability in large relative humidity (RH) range. Our work provides a promising platform for effective RH monitoring systems that can be widely applied in rapid diagnostics, pharmacy, precision medicine, and so forth.

Abstract:A capacitive humidity sensor based on graphene oxide/cellulose nanofibers (GO/CNF) is proposed in this work. The sensing characteristics of the humidity sensor at different relative humidities (RH) are investigated. The results demonstrate that the GO/CNF-based sensor has a high humidity sensitivity (1146.8 pF /% RH), which is nearly 19 times higher than the pure CNF sensor and almost 2.6 times greater than the pure GO sensor. This is due to the fact that the incorporation of CNF into the GO/CNF film introduces additional hydrophilic functional groups and causes an increase in film roughness and wrinkling. This increases the number of water molecule adsorption sites on the GO/CNF composite film on the one hand, and expands the contact area of the GO/CNF composite film with water molecules on the other hand, resulting in a GO/CNF-based humidity sensor with high response sensitivity. Moreover, the sensor shows rapid response and recovery rates, as well as low hysteresis characteristics. Therefore, this research suggests that GO/CNF hybrid films possess considerable potential for the production of high-performance humidity sensors.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising material for humidity sensors and wearable electronics due to their solution capability, good flexibility, and high conductivity. However, the performance of CNT-based humidity sensors is limited by their low sensitivity and slow response. Herein CNTs and hydrophilic polymers were mixed to form a composite. The hydrophilicity of the polymers and the network structure of the CNTs empowered the humidity sensors with a high response of 171% and a fast response/recovery time of 23 s/10 s. Owing to the sticky and flexible polymers, the humidity sensors showed strong adhesion to the PET substrate and exhibited outstanding bending durability. Furthermore, the flexible humidity sensor was applied to monitor human breathing and detect finger movements and handshaking.

Abstract:This study focuses on a novel humidity sensor composed of graphene-oxide (GO)-supported MoTe2 nanosheets. Conductive Ag electrodes were formed on PET substrates by inkjet printing. A thin film of GO-MoTe2 was deposited on the Ag electrode used for adsorbing humidity. The experiment’s results demonstrate that MoTe2 are attached to GO nanosheets uniformly and tightly. The capacitive output of the sensors with various ratios of GO/MoTe2 has been tested for different levels of humidity (11.3–97.3%RH) at room temperature (25 °C). As a consequence, the obtained hybrid film exhibits superior sensitivity (94.12 pF/%RH). The structural integrity and interaction of different components were discussed to afford the prominent humidity sensitivity performance. Under the bending condition, the output curve of the sensor has no obvious fluctuation. This work provides a low-cost way to build flexible humidity sensors with high-performance in environmental monitoring and healthcare.

High performance graphene oxide-based humidity sensor integrated on a photonic crystal cavity

Abstract:We report a high performance relative humidity (RH) microsensor by coating a few-layer graphene oxide (GO) flake over a photonic crystal (PC) cavity. Since the GO layer has a high water-activity and interacts with the evanescent cavity mode strongly, the exposure of GO-PC cavity in varied humidity levels results in significant resonant wavelength shifts, showing a slope of 0.68 nm/%RH in the range of 60%-85% RH. By interrogating the power variation of the cavity reflection, the microsensor presents an ultrahigh sensitivity exceeding 3.9 dB/%RH. Relying on the unimpeded permeation of water molecules through the GO interlayers and microscale distribution of the cavity mode, the integrated sensor has a response time less than 100 ms, which promises successful measurements of human breathing. Combining with the ease of fabrication, this high performance RH sensor has potential applications requiring optical access, device compactness, and fast dynamic response.
