Abstract:Lead-free (Ba0.99Ca0.01)(Ti0.98Zr0.02)O-3 (BCZT) + x mol% (x = 0-0.8) Erbium (Er) ceramics were prepared using the solid-state reaction technique. Dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and photoluminescence properties were systematically studied. Greatly enhanced temperature stabilities of the piezoelectric properties were obtained in the temperature range from 20 to 100 degrees C. Broad ferroelectric phase (orthorhombic-tetragonal) transition (TO-T) tuned by Er doping was deduced from the dielectric properties. With the increase of Er content, the TO-T shifted towards low temperature, while Curie temperature (T-C) shifted towards high temperature. Furthermore, bright green (525 and 550 nm) and weak red (670 nm) emission bands were obtained under excitation (980 nm) at room temperature, corresponding to the transitions of H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively. As multifunctional material, Er-doped BCZT ceramics show great potential in mechano-electro-optic integration and coupling device applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
Photoluminescence and Temperature Dependent Electrical Properties of Er‐Doped 0.94bi0.5na0.5tio3‐0.06batio3 Ceramics

Abstract:Er‐doped 0.94Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3‐0.06BaTiO3 (BNT‐6BT: xEr, x is the molar ratio of Er3+ doping) lead‐free piezoceramics with x = 0–0.02 were prepared and their multifunctional properties have been comprehensively investigated. Our results show that Er‐doping has significant effects on morphology of grain, photoluminescence, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of the ceramics. At room temperature, the green (550 nm) and red (670 nm) emissions are enhanced by Er‐doping, reaching the strongest emission intensity when x = 0.0075. The complex and composition‐dependent effects of electric poling on photoluminescence also have been measured. As for electrical properties, on the one hand, Er‐doping tends to flatten the dielectric constant‐temperature (εr‐T) curves, leading to temperature‐insensitive dielectric constant in a wide temperature range (50°C–300°C). On the other hand, Er‐doping significantly decreases the ferroelectric‐relaxor transition temperature (TF–R) and depolarization temperature (Td), with the TF–R decreasing from 76°C to 42°C for x = 0–0.02. As a result, significant composition‐dependent electrical features were found in ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties at room temperature. In general, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties tend to become weaker, as confirmed by the composition‐dependent piezoelectric coefficient (d33), planar coupling factor (kp), and the shape of polarization‐electric field (P–E), current‐electric field (J–E), bipolar/unipolar strain‐electric field (S–E) curves. Furthermore, to understand the relationship between the TF–R/Td and the electrical properties, the composition of x = 0.0075 has been intensively studied. Our results indicate that the BNT‐6BT: xEr with appropriate Er‐doping may be a promising multifunctional material with integrated photoluminescence and electrical properties for practical applications.
Enhanced low electric-field energy-storage performance in Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3-Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 ceramics

Abstract:Perovskite (1-x)Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3-xBi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 (BST-BiMT-x) ceramics were prepared by sintering the corresponding powders synthesized by combining of solid state reaction method with citrate sol-gel and self-combustion techniques. Submicron grains morphology, high density and large resistivity were obtained in the BST-BiMT-x ceramics. In addition, the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loops with slim shape which lead to enhanced energy-storage properties. The energy-storage density of these two ceramics increases almost linearly with increasing the applied electric filed. The energy-storage density and efficiency at 25 kV/cm of the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics sintered at 1200 degrees C are 141.2 mJ/cm(3 )and 79.3%, and 158.1 mJ/cm(3) and 76.7%, respectively, surpassing many recently reported values for ferroelectric/antiferroelectric ceramics. The enhanced energy-storage density and efficiency under low electric field can be attributed to the slim polarization-electric field hysteresis loops, high density accompanied by submicron grains morphology and pure perovskite structure.
Upconversion Luminescence and Electrical Properties of (k,er) Co-Modified Na0·5Bi4·5Ti4O15 High-Temperature Piezoceramics

Abstract:In this work, (Na,Bi)(0)(.)(5-x) (K,Er)(x)Bi4Ti4O15 (NBT-xK/Er) multifunctional ceramics with a strong green upconversion emission were prepared. The structural and electrical/luminescence properties of the ceramics were studied. Dense microstructures with single bismuth-oxide layered phase structure formed in the NBT-xK/Er samples. After K/Er doping, the samples showed good electrical properties while simultaneously obtaining a bright upconversion green photoluminescence under excitation at 980 nm. The emission intensity is related to doping concentration. At x = 0.008, the maximum emission intensity was achieved. Meanwhile, a good electrical performance (piezoelectric constant: similar to 22 pC/N, remnant polarization: similar to 16.4 mu C/cm(2), and Curie temperature: similar to 626 degrees C) was simultaneously achieved. The samples showed good temperature stability, which make them appropriate candidates for high-temperature piezoelectric applications. The results indicate that the prepared materials feature market potential and application foreground in new multifunctional devices.

Abstract:A series of Bi0.5- x Er x Na0.4K0.1TiO3 (BNKT-xEr) ceramics were designed and fabricated, the dopant effects on dielectric, piezoelectric and photoluminescence properties were studied. The results show that the piezoelectric property of BNKT can be enhanced by a trace amount of Er dopant, which is also reflected in the large linear electrostrain (S uni = 0.29%, under 55 kV/cm) achieved in BNKT-0.0025 Er. On the other hand, higher Er content can produce excellent dielectric temperature stability, with △ԑ/ԑ 150 °C < ±15% over temperature range of 90∼510 °C. Meanwhile, all BNKT-xEr ceramics exhibit good photoluminescence properties, which may open new applications of these multifunctional ceramics.

Abstract:Bismuth layer-structured ferroelectric ceramics of SrCaBi4−x Er x Ti5O18 (SCBT-xEr, x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) were prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method, and their ferroelectric, dielectric, piezoelectric and photoluminescence properties were investigated. The results indicated that all ceramics have a bismuth oxide layered with a dense structure. After Er3+ doping, samples show a bright up-conversion photoluminescence while simultaneously obtaining an enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. A bright green (548 nm) and a weak red (681 nm) emission bands were obtained under excitation (980 nm) at room temperature, which correspond to the transitions from 4S3/2 to 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 to 4I15/2, respectively. Ferroelectric and piezoelectric measurements show that the Er3+-doped ceramics showed an increase in remnant polarization and piezoelectric constant. At x = 0.04, the piezoelectric constant d 33 reaches up to 13pC/N, together with a large remnant polarization (2P r = 16 μC/cm2) and high Curie temperature (T c = 573 °C). As a multifunctional material, Er3+-doped SCBT ferroelectric oxide showed great potential in optical electro integration and coupling device applications.
Polarization-induced phase structure transition and change of photoluminescence in Er3+-doped (Ba, Ca)(Ti, Sn)O3-based multifunctional ceramics

Abstract:Rare-earth elements-doped lead-free piezoelectric ceramics are a valuable multifunctional material. The Er3+-doped (Ba, Ca) (Ti, Sn)O3 (BCTS-Er) ceramics with various polymorphic phase transition (PPT) were synthesized through a traditional solid-state reaction route. The component with a coexisting phase structure of orthorhombic and tetragonal is abbreviated as BCTS-Er-I, and the component with a coexisting phase structure of rhombohedral and tetragonal is abbreviated as BCTS-Er-II. The BCTS-Er ceramic exhibits high piezoelectric properties (BCTS-Er-I: d33 = 260 pC/N; BCTS-Er-II: d33 = 310 pC/N) and strong green photoluminescence (PL) emission. The effects of polarization on the PL properties of the BCTS-Er ceramics with various PPT were systematically studied. Compared with the PL intensity of the unpoled sample, that of the poled BCTS-Er-I ceramics weakened by 70%, while that of the poled BCTS-Er-II ceramics increased by four times under the electric field at 10 kV/cm. The effect of polarization treatment on the PL properties of the BCTS-Er ceramics is attributed to the polarization-induced phase transition, lattice distortion, the symmetry of the host lattice, and domain reorientation.

Abstract:Lead-free (Ba1−xCax)(Ti0.94Sn0.06)O3 (BCST) (x=0.01–0.04) ceramics were prepared using a solid-state reaction technique. The effects of Ca content on the phase structure and electrical properties of the BCST ceramics were investigated. High piezoelectric coefficient of d33=440pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling factor of kp=45% and dielectric constant ɛr=6900 were obtained for the samples at x=0.03. At room temperature, a polymorphic phase transition (PPT) from orthorhombic phase to tetragonal phase was identified in the composition range of 0.02<x<0.04.

Abstract:Er/Yb co-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (Na0.5Bi0.5-x-yErxYbyTiO3, NBT-Er/Yb) ceramics were prepared via a hydrothermal method, in which the effects of different content of Er/Yb co-doping on the NBT ceramics were studied. XRD and SEM analysis proved that the hydrothermal synthesized NBT-Er/Yb precursor powders present rather pure rhombohedral perovskite structure and homogeneous cube-shape particles with slight distortion composed of nano-sized lamellars. Pure rhombohedral perovskite structure NBT-Er/Yb ceramics accompanied by high densification and homogenous microstructure morphology were synthesized using the high active nano-sized particles, where slight impurity appears when the Yb doping content is larger than 7 mol%. The NBT-Er/Yb ceramics present the strongest emission peak at 550 nm under the excitation of 488 nm light, corresponding to the S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) electron transition, where the fluorescence intensity decreases rapidly with further increasing the Yb3+ doping content. Enhanced upconversion luminescence is induced by the Yb co-doping and the maximum intensity appears around 3-5 mol% Yb content in the NBT-Er/Yb ceramics under 800 nm light excitation, which emits strong yellowish green light centering around 542 nm, correlating with the electron transition from S-4(3/2) to I-4(15/2).
Enhanced energy storage and photoluminescence properties in ErBiO3-doped (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-SrTiO3 ceramics

Abstract:Abstract(1-x)(0.75Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-0.25SrTiO3)-xErBiO3 (NBST-xEB, x = 0–0.04) ceramics were fabricated through a solid state reaction method. Scanning electron microscopy investigation shows that grain size of the ceramics decreases with increasing x. X-ray diffraction results reveal that all the ceramics are pseudocubic phase. An enhanced disordering of local structure by EB doping is revealed by Raman spectra. The NBST-xEB ceramics exhibit excellent dielectric stability within a wide temperature range after EB doping. A relatively high recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) of 1.834 J/cm3 with efficiency (η) of 71% are obtained for NBST-0.02 EB ceramics under a moderate electric field of 148 kV/cm. The Wrec and η of the NBST-0.02 EB ceramics exhibit excellent fatigue stability (104) and temperature stability (Wrec > 0.834 J/cm3, η > 64%) within 30–200 °C under 100 kV/cm. With the introduction of EB, the NBST-xEB ceramics also show strong photoluminescence properties due to the presence of Er3+.

Strong up-conversion luminescence and electrical properties of SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 multifunctional ceramics by Er 3+ doping

Abstract:Novel green-emitting piezoelectric ceramics of SrBi 4− x Er x Ti 4 O 15 (SBT- x Er) were prepared. Strong up-conversion with bright green (524 and 548 nm) and a relatively weak red (660 nm) emission bands were obtained under 980 nm excitation at room temperature, which is attributed to the intra 4 f –4 f electronic transition of ( 2 H 11/2 , 4 S 3/2 )– 4 I 15/2 and the transition from 4 F 9/2 to 4 I 15/2 of Er 3+ ions, respectively. Simultaneously, Er 3+ doping promotes the electrical properties. At 0.8 mol%Er, the optimal electric properties with high Curie temperature of T c ~527 °C, large remanent polarization of 2 P r ~14.92 μC/cm 2 and piezoelectric constant of d 33 ~17 pC/N was achieved. As a multifunctional material, Er 3+ doped SBT showed a great potential to be used in 3D-display, bio-imaging, solid state laser and optical temperature sensor.
Multifunctional Performance Derived by Eu Doping in (ba0.85ca0.15)(ti0.9hf0.1)o3 Lead-Free Ceramics

Abstract:Multifunctional perovskite oxides [(Ba0.85Ca0.15)1-xEux](Ti0.9Hf0.1)O3 (Eu-BCTH) were prepared by the solid-state reaction method, and the effects of Eu doping on structure, density, and performance were studied. The Eu-BCTH ceramics sintered at 1450 °C for 3 h exhibit a near-pure perovskite structure accompanied by high relative density and densified microstructure morphology. The Eu-doped BCTH ceramics present complicated dielectric behaviour, that is, normal ferroelectrics accompanied by slight diffusive ferroelectric phase transition characteristics. Excellent ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity can be obtained in the Eu-doped BCTH ceramics simultaneously, which present significant dependency on the Eu doping content. Under 457-nm light excitation, the Eu-BCTH ceramics emit strong red fluorescence centering around 689 nm, relating to the 5D0 → 7F4 electron transition, accompanied by several weak fluorescence emissions. The 0.5 mol% Eu-doped BCTH ceramics present excellent piezoelectric and florescent properties simultaneously.
Thermal stability and enhanced electrical properties of Er3+-modified Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics

Abstract:Na0.5Bi4.5-xErxTi4O15 (NBET-x, x - 0, 0.006, 0.012, 0.018, 0.025) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, with high electrical resistivity were prepared by a solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction analysis suggested that all compositions have a bismuth-layered perovskite structure and revealed a lattice distortion for the NBET-x ceramics. FE-SEM study confirmed that the plate-like morphologies for the grains were clearly observed for all the samples. The phase transition temperature shifted to higher temperatures with increasing Er3+ content. The activation energy value of the ionic conductivity suggested that defects were related to oxygen vacancies. The excellent electrical properties (e.g., d(33) similar to 21 pC N-1, 2P(r) similar to 17.2 mu C cm(-2) and T-c similar to 658 degrees C) are simultaneously obtained in the ceramics with x = 0.012. Additionally, the DC resistivity and thermal annealing behavior at elevated temperature indicated that the NBET-x ceramics exhibit good thermal stability, demonstrating that the NBET-x ceramics are promising candidates for high temperature piezoelectric applications.

Abstract:[(Ba1-xCax)(0.995)Eu-0.005](Ti1-yHfy)O-3 (B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu) lead-free ceramics were fabricated by conventional solid-state method, in which the effects of sintering temperature and the ratios of Ba/Ca and Ti/Hf cations around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) on the electrical and fluorescent properties were explored. Rather pure perovskite structure B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu ceramics with densified microstructure and high density are obtained, which locate around the MPB region and show dependency on compositions and sintering conditions. Complex ferroelectric characteristic is confirmed by dielectric performance measurement and dielectric behavior fitting. Enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties can be attributed to the donor doping characteristic induced by Eu doping, which engenders donor point defects Eu-Ba/Ca*. Extremum piezo-luminescence figure of merit FPC-PLI appears in the sintered B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu ceramics, in which the 1450 degrees C sintered [(Ba0.86Ca0.14)(0.995)Eu-0.005](Ti0.9Hf0.1)O-3 ceramics exhibit the most outstanding multi-functional performance. The high-temperature conductance mechanism of the B1-xCxT1-yHy-Eu ceramics can be attributed to the oxygen vacancies produced by the evaporation of cations during sintering process. Abstract:Lead-free (Ba0.9Ca0.1)(Ti1−xSnx)O3 (BCTS) (x=0.02–0.1) ceramics were fabricated using conventional solid state reaction method. The effects of Sn substitution on structure and electrical properties of the BCTS ceramics were researched. At room temperature, a polymorphic phase transition (PPT) from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase is identified from XRD patterns with increasing Sn content. High piezoelectric coefficient of d33=405pC/N and planar mode electromechanical coupling factor of kp=43.2% are obtained for the sample at x=0.06. The ceramic for x=0.06 also shows uniform microstructure that contributes to the excellent electrical properties. These results indicate that this BCTS system with optimal composition is a promising lead-free piezoelectric material.

Abstract:(Ba0.99Ca0.01)(Ti0.98Zr0.02)O3 (BCZT) and Pr-doped samples (Pr0.002Ba0.988Ca0.01)(Ti0.98Zr0.02)O3 (BCZT-A) as well as 0.998(Ba0.99Ca0.01)(Ti0.98Zr0.02)O3-0.002PrO1.5 (BCZT-W) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. The structural, dielectric, piezoelectric, ferroelectric and luminescence properties of the Pr-doped BCZT ceramics were systematically studied. The orthorhombic-tetragonal (O–T) phase transition temperature decreased obviously, while Curie temperature (TC) maintained at 118 °C for both of the Pr-doped BCZT ceramics. The BCZT-A ceramics exhibited the best piezoelectric properties (d33 = 344 pC/N) and ferroelectric properties (Pr = 13.042 μC/cm2). Meanwhile, desired luminescence properties (bright reddish-orange light, emission peak centered at 649 nm) were obtained under an excitation of 448 nm at room temperature for BCZT-A and BCZT-W ceramics. The luminescence properties of the BCZT-A ceramics were better than those of the BCZT-W ceramics. Asymmetric structure, coexistence of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases at room temperature and less oxygen vacancies exhibited in BCZT-A ceramics could result in the improved piezoelectric properties and luminescence properties simultaneously. These results suggest that the BCZT-A ceramics have potential application as a multifunctional device by integrating its excellent electrical and luminescence properties.

Abstract:Lead‐free (Ba1−xCax)(Ti0.96Sn0.04)O3 (BCST) (x = 0–0.04) ceramics were prepared using solid‐state reaction technique. At room temperature, a polymorphic phase transition from orthorhombic phase to tetragonal phase was identified in the composition range of 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.03. Extremely high piezoelectric coefficient of d33 = 510 pC/N and high planar electromechanical coupling factor of kp = 48% were obtained for the BCST ceramics at x = 0.02. These results indicate that the BCSTs are promising candidates for the widely used lead‐based piezoelectric materials.
Enhanced piezoelectric properties of Lu2O3 doped BCTS ceramics with orthorhombic–tetragonal coexisting phase

Abstract:xLu2O3-(1-x)Ba0.98Ca0.02Ti0.96Sn0.04O3 ceramics were synthesized by a solid-phase reaction method. XRD phase analysis reveals that all samples have perovskite structures with orthorhombic-tetragonal coexisting phases. Grain sizes decrease and become more uniform with increasing Lu2O3 contents. Piezoelectric coefficient d 33 increases with appropriate Lu2O3 contents and attains a peak value of 598 pC/N at molar ratio (x = 0.0050) of Lu2O3, the high value of piezoelectric coefficient for BaTiO3 based ceramics reported in recent years. d 33 of xLu2O3-(1-x)Ba0.98Ca0.02Ti0.96Sn0.04O3 ceramics at x = 0.0050 is 111% higher than that of pure BCTS ceramics. The maximum value of residual polarization P r (10.2 μC/cm2) also occurs at x = 0.0050, remarkably improving d 33 with appropriate Lu2O3 contents.

Abstract:Lead-free 0.96(K 0.48 Na 0.52 )(Nb 0.965 Sb 0.035− x Er x )O 3 -0.04(Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 )ZrO 3 (KNNS 0.035− x E x -BNZ) multifunctional ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method combined with the two-step sintering method. The results show that the ceramics doped with a moderate amount of Er 3+ show good piezoelectric properties and excellent temperature stability, while displaying bright up-conversion photoluminescence. Er 3+ -doping shifts the orthorhombic–tetragonal phase transition temperature ( T O-T ) down to below room temperature and enhances the temperature stability of the ceramics. For a 0.2 mol%Er 3+ -doped sample, the room-temperature piezoelectric constant d 33 reached 343 pC/N. The sample shows good resistance to thermal depoling as noted that the d 33 value remaining at more than 95% of that at room temperature when the temperature was increased to 230 °C. Relying on the luminescence behavior of rare earth Er 3+ ions, Er 3+ -doped samples exhibit a strong photoluminescence with a bright green up-conversion emission under excitation at 980 nm. Two green emissions, at 525 nm and 550 nm, corresponded to the transitions from 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 to 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 , and a weak red emission at 660 nm was assigned to the 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 transition obtained under the excitation of a 980-nm laser. The multifunctional properties in the Er-doped samples make them promising for multifunctional device applications.
