Abstract:A novel, specific macroporous silica-based 4,4′,(5′)-di(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6) chelating polymeric material (DtBuCH18C6/Si-polymer) was synthesized by impregnating DtBuCH18C6 molecule into the Si-polymer particles that was prepared by a series of polymerization reactions between ∼50 μm SiO2 and a mixture of m/p-divinylbenzene, α,α-azobisisobutyronitrile, 1,1-azobiscyclohexane-1-carbonitrile, m/p-formylstyrene, methyl benzoate and diotylphthatate at 90 °C. This hydrophilic material exhibited the much higher adsorption ability for Sr(II) than that of a commercial Sr-resin, an inert conventional polymer-based adsorbent. The complex composition between DtBuCH18C6/Si-polymer and Sr(II) was determined as 1:1 type by investigating the influence of the concentrations of DtBuCH18C6, Sr(II), H+ and NO3− on the adsorption of Sr(II) onto DtBuCH18C6/Si-polymer. Abstract:4,4′,(5′)-Di-(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6(DtBuCH18C6) is a chelating agent having high selectivity mostly for Sr(II). To significantly reduce its leakage by molecular modification, a macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6 polymeric composite (DtDo/SiO2–P) was synthesized. It was performed by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-dodecanol molecules into the pores of the SiO2–P particles utilizing an advanced vacuum sucking technique. The adsorption of a few fission and non-fission products Sr(II), Ba(II), Cs(I), Ru(III), Mo(VI), Na(I), K(I), Pd(II), La(III), and Y(III) onto DtDo/SiO2–P was investigated. It was done by examining the effects of contact time and the HNO3 concentration in a range of 0.1–5.0M at 298K. At the optimum concentration of 2.0M HNO3, DtDo/SiO2–P exhibited strong adsorption ability and high selectivity for Sr(II) great over all of the tested elements, which showed very weak or almost no adsorption except Ba(II). Meanwhile, It was found that the quantity of total organic carbon (TOC) leaked from DtDo/SiO2–P in 2.0M HNO3, 187.5ppm, was lower than 658.4ppm that leaked from DtBuCH18C6/SiO2–P, which was not modified. This was ascribed to the effective association of DtBuCH18C6 and 1-dodecanol through intermolecular interaction. The reduction of DtBuCH18C6 leakage by molecular modification with 1-dodecanol was achieved. It was of great benefit to application of DtDo/SiO2–P in chromatographic partitioning of Sr(II), one of the main heat generators, from high level liquid waste (HLLW) in reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel in the MAREC (Minor Actinides Recovery from HLLW by Extraction Chromatography) process developed recently.
Cesium and Strontium Uptake Utilizing a New Ternary Solid-State Supramolecular Adsorbent under a Framework of Group Partitioning

Abstract:To simultaneously remove Sr and Cs from a simulated highly active liquid waste, a new ternary solid-state supramolecular adsorbent BnPC6DTXAD-7 (BnPDTX7), based on organic chelating agents 25,27-bis(1-n-propoxy)-calix[4]26,28-crown-6 (BnPC6), 4,4'(5')-di-tert-butyldicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DT), and polymeric carrier XAD-7 was prepared for the first time. Scanning electronic microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis demonstrated that BnPDTX7 is a macroporous adsorbent. The adsorption of 20 metals onto BnPDTX7 were studied. Under the optimal adsorption conditions of 3.0 M HNO3, 298 K, and contact time of 60 min, the adsorption capacity toward Cs and Sr were 0.1396 mM/g and 0.1289 mM/g, respectively. The experimental data fit well with the Langmuir model, indicative of the monolayer adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters, Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees of Cs and Sr adsorption and other valuable chemical engineering data were obtained. BnPDTX7 proves to be a promising adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of Sr and Cs because of its high selectivity, fast kinetics, and high stability.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel coordination network of D,L-homocysteic acid with strontium chloride is reported. This compound exhibits an infinite microporous multilayered structure, describable as one-dimensional coordination-based microtubes cross-linking into cationic layers. Chloride anions are intercalated between layers to neutralize the charge, and the layers further pack into a three-dimensional solid via electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), variable-temperature Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) are presented to extensively study the structure. Results show that the compound is stable up to 326 degrees C. Below this temperature, the layered structure is sustained in the process of the reversible loss/gain of coordinated water, confirming that the network involves a robust coordination-based cationic layer framework but rather flexible interlayer interactions. This compound and its analogies are expected to have potential applications in anion exchange and gas storage.

Abstract:The selective capture of radioactive cesium, strontium, and lanthanides from liquid nuclear waste is of great significance to environmental remediation and human health. Herein, the rapid and selective removal of Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3+ ions is achieved by two metal sulfides (FJSM-SnS-2 and FJSM-SnS-3). Both structures feature [Sn3S7](n)(2n-) layers with the mixed cations of [CH3NH3](+) and [Bmmim](+) (1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium) as templates. However, the ratios and arrangements of mixed cations in the interlayered spaces are distinct. It is unprecedented that [CH3NH3](+) and [Bmmim](+) in FJSM-SnS-2 are alternatingly arranged in different interlayered spaces, whereas they in FJSM-SnS-3 are located in the same interlayered spaces. It is the first time that the ionic liquid cation and protonated organic amine have been simultaneously incorporated into metal sulfides. Both compounds show high capacities, rapid kinetics, and a wide pH active range for Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3+. Even under excess Na+ ions, both show excellent selectivity in capturing trace Sr2+ and Eu3+ ions. FJSM-SnS-3 presents the highest K-d(Eu) to date. They still retain high removal efficiency even after intense beta and gamma radiation. Moreover, it is first confirmed by the in situ tracking method of mass spectrometry that the large-sized [Bmmim](+) ions are exchangeable. It is found that the arrangement of cations between interlayered spaces is a crucial factor affecting ion exchange performance. This work will likely change the consensus that large-sized organic cations are difficult to be exchanged and thus further highlight the great potential of metal sulfide ion exchangers for radionuclide remediation.

Abstract:One-step molten salt synthesis process was introduced to fabricate nano to micrometer sized [Formula: see text] powders in which effects of synthesis temperature, oxide-to-flux ratios and raw materials on the generation of [Formula: see text] powders were examined. 100 nm or above sized pure [Formula: see text] particles were obtained at relatively lower temperature of 900[Formula: see text]C. Micro-sized rhombohedral crystals with a maximum size of approximately 12 [Formula: see text]m were obtained from [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] strontium source with 1:1 O/S ratio. Controlled crystal size and morphology of Nb-doped [Formula: see text] particles are prepared by using this method to confirm the performance of thermoelectric properties. The Seebeck coefficient obtained is significantly high when compared with the reported data, and the high ratio of nano particles in the sample has a positive effect on the increase of Seebeck coefficient too, which is likely due to the energy filtering effect at large numbers of grain boundaries resulting from largely distributed structure.

Abstract:Two new layered lanthanide sulfates, [C10H10N2][Pr2(SO4)4(H2O)2](1) and [H5O2][Sm(SO4)2(H2O)3](2) were synthesized via solvothermal reaction and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction(XRD), infrared(IR) spectroscopy, thermal analysis, fluorescent spectra and inductively coupled plasma(ICP). Crystal data for compound 1, triclinic, P-1 space group, a=0.8052(4) nm, b=0.9438(4) nm, c=1.4990(7) nm, α=79.450(5)°, β=83.703(5)°, γ=74.048(5)°, V=1.0746(9) nm3, Z=2; for compound 2, monoclinic, P2(1)/c space group, a=0.6599(11) nm, b=1.8940(3) nm, c=0.8765(14) nm, β=96.596(2)°, V=1.0883(3) nm3, Z=4. Structure analysis indicates that both the compounds exhibit a 2D corrugated layer structure, with protonated 4,4′-bipyridine cations and water dimmers (H5O2)+ located between the inorganic layers of compounds 1 and 2, respectively. Luminescent properties of compounds 1 and 2 were further investigated.

Abstract:The efficient synthesis of 2D polymers (2DPs) with tailorable structures and properties is highly desired but remains a considerable challenge. Here, the first solution synthesis of millimeter-size crystalline covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) with a clear lamellar structure, which can be exfoliated into micrometer-size few-layer 2DP sheets via both micromechanical cleavage and liquid sonication, is reported. The obtained CTFs or 2DPs show a unique staggered AB stacking with a dominant pore size of approximate to 0.6 nm, which is different from the common eclipsed AA stacking in various covalent organic frameworks. The preference for AB stacking is due to the specific interaction of triflic acid with CTFs as revealed computationally. When explored as new polymeric anodes for sodium-ion batteries, both crystalline bulk CTF and exfoliated 2DP exhibit very high capacities (225 and 262 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), respectively), impressive rate capabilities (67 and 119 mA h g(-1) at 5.0 A g(-1), respectively), and excellent cycling stability (95% capacity retention after 1200 cycles) due to their robust conjugated porous structure, outperforming most organic/polymeric sodium-ion battery anodes ever reported.

Abstract:In order to separate Sr~(2+) from the high irradiation waste,potassium tetratitanate whisker as ion-exchanger was synthesized by solid phase method.The ion exchange capacity for strontium was tested and their stabilities were studied.X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy(SEM) were used to study the crystal phases and the morphology.Exchanging and leaching amounts were tested by ICP-AES under different media and temperatures.The result indicated that the potassium tetratitanate fiber can be prepared by solid phase method,the exchanging rate is improved as the temperature increases,the maximal exchanging rate reaches to 93%,the immobility treatment is necessary,and the feasible immobile temperature is 500 ℃.The immobilized material is stable in the whole pH range.

Abstract:Two layered compounds Cs2Ag2Sb2S5 (1) and CsAgSb4S7 (2) were successfully synthesized using the mild solvothermal method with thiourea as a mineralizer. The syntheses of these two silver-containing quaternary sulfides indicates that thiourea is a novel effective mineralizer. Both compounds are semiconductors and compound 1 exhibits excellent photocurrent response property.

Abstract:The selective capture of 137Cs and 90Sr with strong radiotoxicity is of great significance for environmental remediation and human health. However, it is challenging to efficiently sequester 137Cs+ and 90Sr2+ ions from aqueous solutions due to their high solubility and environmental mobility. Herein, two three-dimensional (3D) clusters-based microporous metal sulfides with γ radiation resistance were used for the removal of Cs+ and Sr2+ ions by the ion exchange method, namely [MeNH3]5.5[Me2NH2]0.5In10S18·7H2O (1) and [Me2NH2]6In10S18 (2). Both compounds feature two-fold interpenetrating zeolite-type frameworks of [In10S18]n6n−, and small protonated methylamine and/or dimethylamine cations are located in the pores of 1 and 2. Prior to this work, the protonated organic amines with large size were normally presented in Tn cluster-based microporous sulfides as structure-directing agents (SDA). As a result, a stepwise activation strategy was usually applied to activate their ion exchange properties. Herein, the application of small-molecule amines as SDA imparts the direct and excellent Cs+ and Sr2+ ion exchange properties of title Tn cluster-based sulfides. They exhibit ultrafast kinetics, high adsorption capacities, wide pH durability and high selectivity for Cs+ and Sr2+ ions. Especially, 1 shows not only extremely high ion exchange capacity (qmCs = 564.2 mg/g and qmSr = 151.2 mg/g) superior to other reported adsorbents, but also high affinity and selectivity for Sr2+. Moreover, both compounds can be easily regenerated and reused for 5 cycles. This work shows that zeolite-type sulfides based on supertetrahedral clusters are promising adsorbents for the effective removal of Cs+ and Sr2+ ions for environmental remediation.

N-Functionalized Ti2C MXene As a High-Performance Adsorbent for Strontium Ions: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:Radionuclide sequestration throughadsorption technology has attractedmuch attention due to its unique characteristics such as high removalefficiency, low cost, and ease of operation. In this work, the interactionmechanism of N-functionalized Ti2C MXene (Ti2CN2) as a potential adsorbent for the removal of strontiumions is investigated by using the first-principles method. Our resultsshow that surface N atoms are connected to Sr ions by a robust chemicalN-Sr bond, which provides a stronger interaction and greatercapacity (1.291g g(-1)) of Sr ion adsorption on Ti2CN2 than Ti2C with other surficial groupsO, F, and OH. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the adsorptionstructure of Sr on Ti2CN2 with full layer coverageat room temperature is verified by using ab initio molecular dynamicssimulations. Our results are expected to provide a new perspectivefor the design of MXene materials as an adsorbent for radionuclides.
Highly Selective Radioactive 137cs+ Capture in an Open-Framework Oxysulfide Based on Supertetrahedral Cluster

Abstract:Removal of Cs-137(+), one of the most hazardous radionuclides, from nuclear waste, is a challenging task because it requires simultaneously high capacity and high selectivity. Chalcogenides offer a great opportunity to design and create high-performance Cs-137(+) absorbents. We report a new material (InSnOS) with facile ion-exchange properties. The anionic framework is based on corner-shared pseudo-T4 supertetrahedral oxysulfide [In8Sn12O10S34](16-) clusters, resulting in the formula [In8Sn12O10S32](12-). The crystal structure features the interpenetration of two independent oxysulfide cluster frameworks which create pincer cavities based on sulfur atoms that prove highly effective for capturing Cs+ ions. The binding mode of the Cs+ ions by the material was determined by a single crystal structure refinement of a fully ion-exchanged single crystal. The structure determinations show that the small pores created by the two interpenetrating frameworks are the optimal size for capturing Cs+. This advantage makes the material very effective for the removal and recovery of Cs-137(+) from aqueous solution. This framework shows not only extremely high exchange capacity (q(m)), 537.7 mg per g of anionic [In8Sn12O10S32](12-) framework, ranking it among the best reported Cs+ sorbents, but also superior affinity and selectivity when using complex solutions simulating industrial and nuclear waste conditions.

Abstract:A material design concept based on the crystallographically ordered weakness in zeolites and MOFs is extended to layered sodium titanate for enhancing the originally poor cation exchange rate while keeping the originally outstanding cation exchange capacity, making the applications of many titanates in batteries and adsorbents more feasible and effective. Demand on high‐performance ion exchangers is ever‐increasing in energy and environment applications. Among many cation exchangers, layered alkali titanates generally show larger cation exchange capacity, but slower cation exchange rate due to their 2D micrometer‐size particle morphologies, which limits their practical applications. Here, a rational conversion of a layered sodium titanate, Na2Ti3O7, is reported to the corresponding 1D ultra‐narrow nanowires via hydrothermal treatment under basic conditions. The formation of nanowires is thought to involve the partial exfoliation of Na2Ti3O7 to form thin plate‐like particles that subsequently split into nanowires along a crystallographically defined, chemically selective weakness in the Na2Ti3O7 crystals. This process is similar to a recently burgeoning materials design using atomic‐level weakness in solids, such as zeolites and metal‐organic frameworks. The proposed formation scheme is further supported by comparative experiments performed on another layered alkali titanate, K0.8Ti1.73Li0.27O4, which possesses randomly distributed defects at the Ti sites. Thanks to the shortening of diffusion path lengths of the interlayer cations, the resulting Na2Ti3O7 nanowires show an excellent cation exchange performance toward Cd2+ in aqueous solution, exceeding several existing cation exchangers such as zeolites and organic resins.

Abstract:In this study, a novel organic–inorganic hybrid material IIGK@MnO2 (2-naphthalenemethyl-isoleucine-isoleucine-glycine-lysine@manganese dioxide) was designed as a novel adsorbent for the removal of strontium ions (Sr2+). The morphology and structure of IIGK@MnO2 were characterized using TEM, AFM, XRD, and XPS. The results indicate that the large specific surface area and abundant negative surface charges of IIGK@MnO2 make its surface rich in active adsorption sites for Sr2+ adsorption. As expected, IIGK@MnO2 exhibited excellent adsorbing performance for Sr2+. According to the adsorption results, the interaction between Sr2+ and IIGK@MnO2 can be fitted with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order equation. Moreover, leaching and desorption experiments were conducted to assess the recycling capacity, demonstrating significant reusability of IIGK@MnO2.

Abstract:Radionuclides sequestration through adsorption technology has attracted much attention due to its unique characters such as high removal efficiency, low cost, and ease of operation. In this work, the interaction mechanism of N-functionalized Ti2C MXene (Ti2CN2) as a potential adsorbent for the removal of strontium ions is investigated by using first principles method. Our results show that surface N atoms are connected to Sr ions by a robust chemical N-Sr bond, which provides a stronger interaction and greater capacity (1.291g g-1) of Sr ion adsorption on Ti2CN2 than Ti2C with other surficial groups O, F and OH. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the adsorption structure of Sr on Ti2CN2 with full layer coverage at room temperature is verified by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Our results are expected to provide a new perspective for the design of MXene materials as adsorbent for radionuclide.

First Potassium Fluoroaluminate Ionic Exchanger for Rapid and Selective Removal of Sr2+ with High Capacity

Abstract:90Sr, as a typical artificial radionuclide, poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. The selective removal of this radionuclide from industrial nuclear waste is very necessary for our environment. Here we report a novel potassium fluoroaluminate, K2[(AlF5)H2O], which was synthesized by a simple low‐temperature one‐step method. It adopts a 1D AlF6‐chain structure, which consists of exchangeable potassium ions in between the infinite chains of octahedral Al centers. As a remarkable inorganic ionic exchanger, K2[(AlF5)H2O] has a high chemical stability (resistance of pH= ~3‐12) and thermal stability. It possesses an excellent adsorption selectivity (Kd=~6.1×104 mL·g−1) and a maximum adsorption capacity of qm= ~120.32 mg·g−1 for Sr2+. Importantly, it still keep a very good selectivity for Sr2+ ions even in the presence of competing Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ aqueous solutions. K2[(AlF5)H2O] is the first example of fluoroaluminate ionic exchange materials that can capture Sr2+. This result opens up a new way to design and synthesize inorganic ionic exchangers for the selective removal of Sr2+ ions from radioactive waste water.
