Abstract:The matrix eigenvalue method is used to analyze a laser resonator composed of diffraction optical ele-ments. The results show that this type of resonator can separate fundamental mode and high order modeseffectively. The output beams can be designed for different requests.

Abstract:The matrix eigenvalues method is used to analyze the laser cavity in which the traditional spherical mirror is replaced by the phase type diffraction optical elements. The authors analyze, the characteristics of the modes under the conditions of different Frenesl number. The results show that this laser cavity can enhance the discrimination between spatial modes effectively and can be used to design the output laser beam.

Abstract:Imitated the optical system of Rowland circle structure, the Rowland sphere structure is built in this paper, the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction scalar integral formula of electromagnetic wave is simplified on the Rowland sphere structure, the computational formulas of spatial frequency spectrum and diffractional far field distribution from the weakly guiding optical fiber LP mode are derived. The concept of central disc in LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field, which had analogy to the Airy disc of plane wave Fraunhofer diffraction from circular aperture, is presented, and the calculational formulas of LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field divergence half width is deduced in the end of this paper.

Abstract:A low diffraction beam is obtained by altering the existing resonator of a CO2 laser using a special phase plate. The phase plate is designed based on the boundary diffraction principle and is implemented on the resonator rear mirror. It is found that the low diffraction beam has a smaller M2 value than that of a Gaussian beam. The effects of the improved beam quality on a laser ablation process are investigated using a polymeric material. A theoretical model is provided to predict the laser ablated hole profile and penetration depth. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental measurements. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the low diffraction beam has marked advantages over the Gaussian beam in ablation-dominated material removal processes in terms of larger depth and smaller taper at the same average power level.

Abstract:Diffraction efficiency of multi-layer diffractive elements made of different materials has been analyzed.High diffraction efficiency over wide optical band can be achieved by optimal design of multi-layer structure based on phase distribution function for two-layer diffractive elements.Design results show that diffraction efficiency over visual band can be greater than 96%,which is better than single layer diffractive element.This made it possible for us to use opposite chromatic,thermal and aspheric characteristic of diffractive elements to achieve compact,light-weight and well imaging performance hybrid optical systems especially for visual band.

Abstract:The relationship between acoustic wave direction,laser incident angle,and laser diffraction angle of TeO2 acousto-optical deflector with acoustic frequency was analyzed based on the TeO2 crystal acousto-optical characteristic and Dixon equations under abnormal Bragg diffraction.A simple linear model for the fixed diffraction angle was set up by numerical calculation and parameter fitting.Using the linear model,acoustic wave frequency for fixed laser diffraction angle could be obtained easily.

Abstract:The mode field radii in the near field and the angular radii of the far field divergence defined by second moment and differential operator algorithm and the beam propagation factor defined by second moment algorithm were presented to describe the characteristic beam parameters in the diffracted field of the fiber end face comprehensively. In the condition of paraxial approximation, the simple relationship of the beam parameters hinged on the beam propagation factor were educed. The verdict that beam propagation should be more than 1 for fiber was presented. The beam parameters can be calculated accurately from the mode field distribution of the fiber, or from the diffraction frequency spectrum distribution in the far field, which is experimentally measurable exactly. The above principles and findings can serve as theoretical basis for measuring and computing the characteristic parameters of fiber. The analytic functions and scopes of the characteristic beam parameters in the diffracted field of LP 01 mode step index fiber were deduced.

Abstract:A semi-analytical calculation framework is proposed to calculate the eigenmodes of a general laser resonator with arbitrary intra-cavity wavefront aberrations. By solving a linear eigenvalue equation in the complex space, the mode intensity distributions of the eigenmodes in high power unstable resonators are obtained, indicating that due to the aberrations the area of fundamental mode significantly shrinks to form the localized mode with extremely high power intensity. The beam quality, mode area, threshold gain, and operation reliability are compared between the traditional unstable resonator and the one with a graded reflectivity mirror. The simulation results disclose that with a graded reflectivity mirror more high-order modes participate in mode competition and the localized mode effect of fundamental mode is weakened.
Influence of Spherical Aberrations on Fundamental Mode Beam Quality under Different Laser Resonators

Abstract:Spherical aberrations of the thermal lens of the active media are severe when solid state lasers are strongly pumped. The fundamental mode profile deteriorates due to the aberrations. Self-consistent modes of a resonator with aberrations are calculated by using the Fox-Li diffraction iterative algorithm. Calculation results show that the aberration induced fundamental mode beam quality deterioration depends greatly on the resonator design. The tolerance of a flat-flat resonator to the aberration coefficient is about 30 lambda in the middle of stability, where lambda is the wavelength of laser beam. But for a dynamically stable resonator, 2 lambda of spherical aberration will create diffraction loss of more than 40%, if inappropriate design criteria are used. A birefringence compensated laser resonator with two Nd:YAG rods is experimentally studied. The experimental data are in quite good agreement with simulation results.

Abstract:A new method is introduced to generate a hollow beam inside a cavity. The hollow beam can be obtained theoretically by controlling the parameters of the diffraction functions. After designed the diffraction components in the cavity, a hollow beam of good quality is realized experimentally using a YAG solid state laser.

Abstract:Spherical aberrations of thermal lens of the active media are severe when the solid state lasers are strongly pumped. The aberrations influence the mode profile, the diffraction loss, the output power and other laser beam properties, especially for a dynamically stable resonator with large TEM00-mode volume. Self-consistent modes in a resonator with aberrations are calculated using Fox–Li diffraction iterative algorithm. There are side lobes with the fundamental mode when the spherical aberration is introduced, hence the beam quality is deteriorated. The calculated results agree well with the experimental data. The beam filling factor plays an important role in the design of a laser system. The optimum value of the beam filling factor should be determined by the experimental results according to the spherical aberration effect.

Abstract:By introducing the rate equations and light intensity propagating equations into the fast Fourier transform-based calculation, the optical gain served as the connection between the light field and light intensity, its influence over mode pattern was studied. Thermal lens effect was also investigated by means of finite element analysis. The analysis was applied to a slab laser with a hybrid cavity. A similar experimental study was also carried out in the laboratory. TEM(00) mode with sidelobes along the unstable direction was observed both in the calculation and experiment. As predicted in the analysis, the homogeneity of the pump light improved the beam quality. Numerical and experimental results of pump threshold and slope efficiency were also presented.

Abstract:In high power laser systems, nonlinear effect, one of the key factors of beam wavefront aberration and even irreversible damage to system, has always been one of the top considerations of researchers for decades. A hybrid ray-tracing method for both linear media and nonlinear media based on geometric optics is presented in this paper and realized by programming. In a simple optic system with KDP crystal, an obvious decline of beam quality is observed in high laser power density conditions and a method taking component intervals as compensation of beam quality is proved feasible. Considering the complexity of traditional modeling method based on surfaces, a modeling method based on components is established. Hopefully, the conclusions and flaws of this paper can shed light on relevant work and further research.
Research of the Laser Transverse Mode Modulated by the Cat's Eye Resonator

Abstract:The cat's eye resonator is designed with a cat's eye reflector as the resonator mirror. The configuration of the cat's eye reflector is described. The relation between the focal length of the cat's eye reflector and the distance between the convex lens and the concave mirror of the cat's eye reflector is indicated. Through controlling that distance in the cat's eye reflector, laser transverse mode is selected to ensure fundamental transverse mode output. In Newton-Cotes method based on the diffractive integral equation of the laser, laser transverse mode of the cat's eye cavity laser under variable parameters is analyzed. The eigenvalue ηmn and power loss which every transverse mode corresponds with are calculated. The parameter assuring fundamental transverse mode output obtained is well accordant to the experimental results. Therefore, a new convenient on-line means for the control and selection of the laser transverse mode is discovered.

Abstract:The ripple errors of the lens lead to optical damage in high energy laser system. The analysis of sidelobe on the focal plane, caused by ripple error, provides a reference to evaluate the error and the imaging quality. In this paper, we analyze the diffraction characteristics of sidelobe of optical elements with ripple errors. First, we analyze the characteristics of ripple error and build relationship between ripple error and sidelobe. The sidelobe results from the diffraction of ripple errors. The ripple error tends to be periodic due to fabrication method on the optical surface. The simulated experiments are carried out based on angular spectrum method by characterizing ripple error as rotationally symmetric periodic structures. The influence of two major parameter of ripple including spatial frequency and peak-to-valley value to sidelobe is discussed. The results indicate that spatial frequency and peak-to-valley value both impact sidelobe at the image plane. The peak-to-valley value is the major factor to affect the energy proportion of the sidelobe. The spatial frequency is the major factor to affect the distribution of the sidelobe at the image plane.
Two Kinds of New Beam Lasers

Abstract:\According to the more complete diffraction theory, a series of new beams was invented both outside and inside laser cavity by using lambda/2 phase plate. A new beam with equivalent beam quality factor M-e(2)<1 is achieved on ten-watt CO2 laser and on hundred-Watt and thousand-Watt CO2 laser with axial express flux. It may be named as the first kind of new beam laser. From the point of view of practical applications, we designed and produced a new structure of laser cavity whose output mirror was a special mirror with step reflectivity. We have realized 1000W new beam on CO2 laser with transverse express flux, which is close to the fundamental mode. It may be named as the second kind new laser beam. Its structure is simpler than others, but it brings excellent results.

High Power Laser and Particle Beams

Abstract:The thermal distortions of a high average power solid-state laser could be compensated by cube corner arrays (CCA) due to the quasi phase conjugation. But the applications of a CCA have been limited when it is used as a resonator,because of the numerous cavity modes caused by its retro-reflection characteristics and the high loss caused by the edge diffraction of the CCA. The output properties of a cube corner array resonator are analyzed and a new method to obtain single mode has been proposed by using an intracavity filter to suppress the high order cavity modes. The theoretical and experimental results show that the output beam quality could be improved to nearly 5 times the diffraction limit by cube corner arrays with intracavity filter.

Abstract:The transmit matrix,characteristic of misalignment and field of the directional prism resonator are discussed by means of matrix optics.Resonator comprised of a plane output mirror and a directional prism is thought as a critical resonator of self-collimation,also,stable or unstable resonator configuration is decided by the radius of the output mirror,the misalignment sensitivity of the critical resonator is so small,even zero,that is helpful for acquiring the super anti-misalignment stability,and ensures the ideal beam quality.The matrix of Jones is to describe the pbase transformation of the directional prism,there are six types of eigenvector in cavity.
