Abstract:A new method is introduced to generate a hollow beam inside a cavity. Using a matrix eigenvalue method, the laser resonator with optical diffraction elements is theoretically analysed and simulated. The hollow beam can be obtained theoretically by controlling the parameters of the diffraction functions. After designed the diffraction components in the cavity, a hollow beam of good quality is realized experimentally using a YAG solid state laser.

Abstract:A new mathematical model named hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs) is introduced to describe the dark hollow beam. The area of the dark region across the HGBs can be easily controlled by properly choosing the beam parameters. An analytical propagation formula for HGBs through paraxial optical system is derived. The evolution properties of the intensity distribution of HGBs in free space propagation are illustrated graphically using the derived propagation formula. By using matrix eigenvalues method, the laser cavity with diffraction optical elements, which can generate the dark hollow beams, was constructed. Dark hollow beams were realized in experiment and its intensity distribution properties in near field and far field were studied. The results derived from the experiment is coincident with those predicted by the theory. The dark hollow beams we have obtained can be used conveniently to analyze atoms manipulation and may provide a new method for atom cooling.

Abstract:Dark hollow beams (DHBs) have great potential in the applications of optical manipulation, and the generation of DHBs is still a challenging and rewarding issue. In this paper, we present a beam shaping system for generating DHBs. The proposed system is composed of a freeform lens array and a non-classical room system which has a constant focal length but various image locations. The DHBs with a well-controlled intensity profile generated by the proposed system is not sensitive to the change of the intensity distribution of the incident beam, which allows flexible choices of light sources. Moreover, the annular pattern produced by the DHB remains unchanged when the image plane is moved a long distance of 17mm, and the energy efficiency of the beam shaping system is greater than 90% when Fresnel loss is considered. The proposed beam shaping system endows the generated DHBs with new properties and may have great potential in the field of optical tweezers and atom guides. Abstract:By using a diffractive optical element (DOE), a new method to generate dark hollow laser beam (DHLB) is presented in this paper. The optimization theories to design the DOE can obtain a globally optimal solution in an exact analytic form. The generated DHLB shows good performances for actual applications, which testifies the validity of this new method.

Abstract:We report the experimental generation of a high-quality partially coherent dark hollow beam (DHB) by coupling a partially coherent beam into a multimode fiber (MMF) with a suitable incidence angle. The interference experiment of the generated partially coherent DHB passing through double slits is demonstrated. It is found that the coupling efficiency of the MMF, the quality, and the coherence of the generated partially coherent DHB are closely controlled by the coherence of the input beam.

Abstract:A dark-hollow beam (DHB) is generated by a coupling of a single fundamental mode He-Ne laser beam with a misalignment multimode fibre (MMF) in a special way. Effects of the misalignment angle, diameter and length of the MMF are studied. The generated DHBs can be used for guiding and trapping of atoms, manipulating particles, or as optical tweezers.

Abstract:A new mathematical model, described as hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs), is proposed to describe a dark hollow laser beam (DHB). Based on the Collins integral, an analytical propagation formula for the HGBs through a paraxial optical system is derived. The HGBs also can be expressed as a superposition of a series of Lagurerre-Gaussian modes by use of a polynomial expansion. As a numerical example, the propagation properties of a DHB in free space are illustrated graphically. Abstract:<p>We present a method to produce a hollow laser beam with adjustable profile distribution using a tapered optical fiber. The dependence of the dark spot size (DSS), hollow beam width (HBW), and transverse field intensity distribution of the hollow beam on the incidence angle of the laser beam, cone angle of the tapered fiber, and working distance are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The study shows that a high-power hollow laser beam with excellent propagation properties can be achieved by using a tapered fiber with certain parameters. The proposed technique is simple, flexible, and easy to control and operate.</p>

Abstract:Hollow beam is a peculiar structure beam, which has been widely used in various areas. Here, we propose a novel diffraction optical element to generate tunable hollow beams. This element is composed of periodic concentric rings. The phase of each ring is periodically distributed between −π and π and satisfies a complex variable function. By tuning the parameters of the structure, we can flexibly manipulate the size and length of the hollow beam. The length of the beam can be increased from 98 λ to 248 λ, and the full width at half maximum varies from 0.43 λ to 0.61 λ. Moreover, the light intensity and side lobe of the hollow beam can also be regulated using the designed diffraction optical element. The potential applications of this highly tunable hollow beam include optical nanomanipulation, microscopic imaging, and nanolithography.

Abstract:Previous methods for the generation of accelerating beams are mostly based on bulky phase-only spatial light modulator. Here we propose an experimental scheme for the generation of accelerating beams by fabricating a quartz plate capable of realizing both phase and amplitude modulation. The phase modulation is implemented by aligned 16-level etching into the quartz plate, while the amplitude modulation is realized by controlling the duty ratio of the partial metal coverage locally. Based on this approach, a sinusoidal accelerating beam with multiple bending is generated for demonstration and propagates along a sinusoidal trajectory as expected.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time, a hollow-conical atomic beam from a standard low-velocity intense source. Experimental results and numerical simulations indicate that the hollow-conical feature is caused by the converging-diverging extraction process. The degree of hollowness can be reduced by using a weaker push beam and extending the length of transverse cooling. Analytical models are proposed to quantitatively describe the hollowness of the atomic beam. This study can find applications where a compact and solid atomic beam is needed, such as coupling cold atoms into matter waveguides or continuous cold atomic beam interferometers.

Abstract:A low diffraction beam is obtained by altering the existing resonator of a CO2 laser using a special phase plate. The phase plate is designed based on the boundary diffraction principle and is implemented on the resonator rear mirror. It is found that the low diffraction beam has a smaller M2 value than that of a Gaussian beam. The effects of the improved beam quality on a laser ablation process are investigated using a polymeric material. A theoretical model is provided to predict the laser ablated hole profile and penetration depth. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental measurements. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the low diffraction beam has marked advantages over the Gaussian beam in ablation-dominated material removal processes in terms of larger depth and smaller taper at the same average power level.

Abstract:The description of hollow Gaussian beam is directly started from the Maxwell’s equations. Based on the vector angular spectrum representation of Maxwell’s equations, hollow Gaussian beam is decomposed into the TE and TM terms. The analytical expressions of TE and TM terms are presented by means of mathematical techniques in the near field. By means of the method of stationary phase, the concise expressions of TE and TM terms in the far field have been also derived. The TE and TM terms are shown to be orthogonal to each other in the far field. According to the analytical representations of TE and TM terms, the light intensity distributions of the TE term, the TM term and the whole beam are depicted in the near and the far fields, respectively. The result obtained here is also compared with already known solutions. This research reveals the vectorial composition of hollow Gaussian beam, which is beneficial to enhance the applications of hollow Gaussian beam.

Abstract:A new mathematical model called "controllable dark-hollow beams" is introduced to describe hollow beams. The central dark size of this beam can be controlled easily by the beam order N and parameter epsilon. An analytical formula is derived for the propagation of a controllable dark-hollow beam through a paraxial optical system, and some numerical calculations are carried out. Some important propagation characteristics of this beam, such as the beam propagation factor and the kurtosis parameter, are studied in detail, and their variation rules versus the beam order N and parameter e are presented and plotted. Abstract:Making use of bound states in the continuum, we present experimental results on efficient second harmonic generation in photonic crystal cavities supporting doubly-resonant modes. The second harmonic emission is a vortex beam with radial polarization and exhibits highly directional far-field emission in normal direction.

Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.

Abstract:We propose a novel method to generate vector beams in planar photonic crystal cavities with multiple missing-hole defects. Simulating the resonant modes in the cavities, we observe that the optical fields in each defect have different phase and polarization state distributions, which promise the compositions of vector beams by the scattered light from the defects. The far-field radiation patterns of the cavity modes calculated via the Sommerfeld diffraction theory present vector beams possessing hollow intensity profiles and polarization singularities. In addition, the extraction efficiencies of the vector beams from the cavities could be improved by modifying the air-holes surrounding the defects. This planar photonic crystal cavity-based vector beam generator may provide useful insights for the on-chip controlling of vector beams in their propagations and interactions with matter.
