Abstract:Brookite is the least studied TiO2, and its photocatalytic activity higher or lower than that of anatase still remains unclear. In this work, three different model reactions have been used for the activity assessment. Phase-pure brookite and anatase were homemade at different temperatures (Ts = 200-500 degrees C), as confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. For phenol oxidation in aerated aqueous solution, brookite showed an apparent activity higher and lower than that of anatase at low and high T-s, respectively. For chromate reduction in aerated aqueous suspension, the apparent activity of brookite was always lower than that of anatase. However, with the same amount of Cr(VI) or Ag(I) adsorbed on the oxide in water for Cr(VI) reduction or for phenol degradation under ND the intrinsic activities of brookite and anatase not only became similar at given Ts but also increased with the increase of Ts. Moreover, for O-2 reduction to H2O2 in the presence of excess phenol, the BET surface area normalized activity of brookite was always higher than that of anatase, the trend of which was similar to that observed from phenol degradation in aerated aqueous solution. It is proposed that brookite has a stronger affinity to O-2 in water than anatase. Then, the observed difference between brookite and anatase in the apparent photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation is ascribed to the combined effect of T-s, surface area, and sorption capacity toward the dissolved O-2 in water.

Abstract:Using titanium sulfate, Ti(SO 4 ) 2 , as precursor and sodium hydroxide, NaOH, as adjusting reagent, pure brookite, pure anatase, and mixed-phase titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) with tunable brookite/anatase ratios were synthesized via a hydrothermal process. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffractionspectrometry, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement. Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B in aqueous solution served as a probe reaction to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared nanocomposites under visible irradiation (λ > 400 nm). The mixed-phase TiO 2 exhibits higher photodegradation activity than single phase TiO 2 . The sample with 63.1% brookite and 36.9% anatase shows the highest degradation activity. Possible mechanism attributing to the enhanced activity was proposed based on the strucutre and surface property of the samples.
Improved Photocatalytic Activity for Phenol Degradation of Rutile TiO2 on the Addition of CuWO4 and Possible Mechanism

Abstract:Rutile is much less active than anatase and brookite for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution. In this work, we found that addition of a trace amount of CuWO4 greatly accelerated phenol degradation in an aerated aqueous suspension of rutile. The increased rate was not only much higher than those of anatase and brookite, prepared at the same temperature (600 degrees C), but also increased continuously with the sintering temperature of rutile from 150 to 800 degrees C. These observations indicate that the high intrinsic photocatalytic activity of rutile produced at a high sintering temperature can be exploited by using co-catalyst CuWO4. Furthermore, as the amount of CuWO4 added to the suspension increased, the amount of H2O2 produced in the presence of excess phenol increased and then decreased; the trend was similar to that observed for phenol degradation. The observed positive effect of CuWO4 is mainly caused by solid CuWO4 rather than Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution. A (photo) electrochemical measurement showed that interfacial electron transfer occurred from the irradiated rutile to CuWO4. This would improve the charge-separation efficiency, and consequently increase the rates of O-2 reduction and phenol degradation.

Abstract:Phenol is a kind of hardly degradable organic pollutants which widely exist in wastewater and pose great harm to human environment,so the decontamination of phenol is an urgent task in China.In this paper,photocatalytic degradation of phenol was investigated using natural rutile TiO2 powders from Shanxi Province under irradiation of UV and sunlight.The effects of irradiation time,pH value,initial concentration of phenol and dosage of H2O2 on the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of phenol were studied.The results indicate that natural rutile TiO2,which is commonly thought to have very low catalytic activity,can effectively photodegrade the phenol when it is synergized with H2O2,but the coexistence of light source,charge-trapping agent and photocatalyst is the precondition of photocatalytic reaction.The degradation efficiency of phenol is much higher in acidic condition than in neutral or alkaline conditions,especially when the pH value is 3.5.When the initial concentration is lower,the phenol can be degraded more completely.When the initial concentration is 60 mg/L,the degradation rate is up to 1.922 mg/(L·h).As an effective charge-trapping agent,H2O2 can inhibit the recombination of electron-hole and facilitate the degradation process,and its favorable dosage is 2 ml/L.It is shown that 87.68% of phenol is degraded under sunlight irradiation by natural rutile in 7 h,which is comparable with the P25 (99.72%),and phenol can be completely degraded by natural rutile TiO2 in 14 h.The result of nitrogen adsorption shows that the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area of rutile is only 0.469 6 m2/g,which is by far smaller than that of P25 (44 m2/g).According to EPMA and XRD analysis,it is held that the impurity atoms,such as V and Fe,might induce some response to visible light and greatly enhance the photocatalytic capability of natural rutile.As the most common existing form of TiO2 in nature,rutile can be utilized as photocatalyst to tackle the problem of organic pollution.Compared with synthetic titanium dioxide,it can overcome the shortage of low utilization of solar energy and hence has promising environmental application.

Abstract:Rutile is the thermally most stable form of TiO2, and can be produced at a high temperature, with a large number of photogenerated charge carriers on the oxide surface potentially available to reactants. However, rutile is seldom studied as a photocatalyst for organic oxidation, due to its poor ability for O2 sorption and reduction in aqueous solution. Herein the effects of NaF and NaH2PO4 on rutile photocatalysis have been examined. For phenol degradation in aqueous solution, these anions were detrimental, with the trend contrary to those reported with anatase, brookite, and P25 (a mixture of anatase and rutile). After rutile was deposited with 0.5% Pt, however, these anions were beneficial, with the trend similar to those observed for a Pt-deposited anatase and P25. At the same amounts on Pt/rutile, interestingly, fluoride was approximately 3 times more active than phosphate, as observed for Pt/anatase. At a surface coverage higher than 90%, however, the positive effect of phosphate became smaller as its adsorption was increased. An independent measurement with a rutile film electrode showed that both fluoride and phosphate inhibited the adsorption and reduction of O2, while they promoted the hole oxidation of phenol. A plausible mechanism is proposed, involving the fluoride-induced enhancement of bridged oxygen/hydroxyl radical formation and the hole oxidation of phosphate into the anion radicals.

Abstract:Rutile, anatase, and brookite TiO2 nanorods (TNs) with specific exposed crystal facets have been obtained by a hydrothermal method using peroxide titanic acid (PTA) solution of different pH values. Below pH(PTA) 10, the condensing complex is uncharged Ti2O5(OH)(2)(H2O)(4) or cations Ti2O5(H2O)6(2+), and the corner-shared bonding easily occurs to form rutile phase. Above pH(PTA) 10, the condensing species is anions Ti2O5(OH)(4)(H2O)(2)(2-), resulting in the larger probability of edge-shared bonding which favor the formation of anatase TiO2. Brookite whose structure contains both corner-shared and edge-shared bonding can be formed when pH(PTA) equals to 10. Rutile TN synthesized from PTA solution at pH 4 showed the optimal photocatalytic oxidation activity for MB degradation; Brookite TN exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for reduction of Cr (VI) despite that it does not exhibit the largest surface area. The presence of a spatial separation of redox sites in faceted rutile TiO2 nanorod determined the photocatalytic activity of MB decomposition. Compared with rutile and anatase phase, the optimal photocatalytic reduction activity of brookite TN might be resulting from a cathodic shift of the conduction band.

Abstract:Nanosized biphase titania photocatalysts with various phase compositions were synthesized by hydrothermal method. Gas-phase photocatalytic oxidations of hexane and methanol were investigated in the presence of the biphase titania catalysts. A clear synergetic effect between the anatase and rutile phases was observed for the two reactions. Mechanical mixtures of the two titania phases were also prepared to investigate this synergetic effect. It was found that the closer the anatase and rutile particles are in contact, the more evident the synergetic effect is. The result of a long-term experiment shows that the activity of the synthesized biphase catalyst is very stable. Sulfation of these biphase catalysts does not improve their activity and stability as that of the single phase anatase TiO2 catalyst.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a cost-effective method to degrade and remove pollutants, using semiconductor catalysts such as titanium dioxide. The brookite form of titanium dioxide could be as efficient or more efficient compared to the anatase and rutile forms, yet the synthesis of brookite titanium dioxide is actually arduous. Here, we synthesized brookite titanium dioxide nanosquares using a mixture of titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide and titanium oxychloride at low temperature. We observed pure brookite TiO2 nanosquares with a mean edge length of 51 nm. Brookite nanosquares exhibit better photoactivity for the decomposition of rhodamine B under ultraviolet, compared to common titanium dioxide. The synthetic method is simple and does not need any template, organic additive, or organic solvent. This is the first work addressing the synthesis of brookite nanosquare simultaneously using two kinds of water-soluble titanium precursors.

Checking the Synergetic Effect Between Anatase and Rutile

Abstract:To check the synergetic effect between anatase and rutile, a series of anatase rutile-coupled TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by calcination of the physical mixtures of amorphous TiO2 and rutile. These catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of these mixed-phase photocatalysts were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and photocatalytic reforming of methanol for H-2 production. The dependence of the photocatalytic activities on the anatase content, the different sources of irradiation light, and the anatase rutile interacting strength was investigated in detail. All of these results show that the photocatalytic activity increases with the increase of anatase content in the mixed-phase photocatalysts, which indicates that the synergetic effect between anatase and rutile does not work in these TiO2 photocatalytic systems.
Degradation and Mineralization Mechanism of Phenol by Bipo4 Photocatalysis Assisted with H2o2

Abstract:Degradation and mineralization of phenol by BiPO4 photocatalysis assisted with H2O2 were attempted in order to know the effects of H2O2 on BiPO4 photocatalysis and the detailed mechanism. Both conversion and mineralization rate of phenol by BiPO4 photocatalysis could be accelerated obviously by addition of H2O2 above 30 ppm, whereas low concentration of H2O2 could inhibit the mineralization rate of phenol due to the consumption of photogenerated holes (h(+)) by the adsorbed H2O2 on BiPO4. The enhancement of efficiency by adequate H2O2 resulted from the (OH)-O-center dot produced by H2O2 photolysis and the increased separation efficiency of e(-) and h(+) by the capture of e(-) by H2O2. (OH)-O-center dot was efficient in conversion of phenol to its intermediates but it could not transfer the carboxylic ones without C-H bond into CO2 and could induce the formation of dimeric intermediates. Therefore, phenol could not be completely mineralized by H2O2. In contrast to H2O2 photolysis, the main active species of BiPO4 photocatalysis were photogenerated holes, which were efficient in fast ring cleavage and mineralization of carboxylic intermediates. This resulted in the complete mineralization of phenol by BiPO4 in 4h. Synergy of BiPO4 and adequate H2O2 could raise the removal efficiency of phenol greatly. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Single-crystalline Rutile TiO2 Nanorod Array on Flexible Ti Substrates for Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Phenol in Water

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanorods are intrinsic highways for charge transfer and hence ideal nanofeatures for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) degradations of pollutants in wastewater. Photocatalytic thin films on flexible substrates avoid the nuisance catalysts-recovering procedure and also allow for the flexible design in photo catalytic apparatus. We therefore directly deposited single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays on flexible and conductive Ti substrates through a hydrothermal technique and optimized the synthetic parameters to achieve an extremely high PEC activity towards phenol removal in water under UV light illumination. In the presence of tetrabutyltitanate (TBT) and HCl reactants under a hydrothermal environment, a balance in the erosion of the Ti substrate and the precipitation of TiO2 nanorods is found to be the key to tune the nanofeatures of the TiO2 thin films and in turn the PEC efficiency. The decreasing TBT concentration achieved a more sparsely distributed nanorod array, which significantly contributes to the PEC activity; yet too little TBT resulted in total dissolution of Ti plates. The PEC activity increased with increasing hydrothermal duration because of more loaded TiO2. The maximum reaction rate constant is 2.74 h(-1), which is 39 times that of a commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticulate film. The photocurrent stabilized at 0.9 mA/cm(2) under the illumination of AM1.5G simulated solar light, suggesting a high separation efficiency of photogenerated holes and electrons along the single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays.
Synergistic Effect of Rutile and Brookite TiO2 for Photocatalytic Formic Acid Dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Solar energy is an ideal clean and inexhaustible energy source. Solar-driven formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation is one of the promising strategies to address safety and cost issues related to the storage, transport, and distribution of hydrogen energy. For FA dehydrogenation, the O-H and C-H cleavages are the key steps, and developing a photocatalyst with the ability to break these two bonds is critical. In this work, both density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental results confirmed the positive synergistic effect between brookite and rutile TiO2 for O-H and C-H cleavage in HCOOH. Further, brookite TiO2 is beneficial to the generation of the (OH)-O-center dot radical and significantly promotes C-H cleavage in formate. Under optimized conditions, the H-2 production efficiency of FA dehydrogenation can reach up to 30.4 mu molmg(-1)h(-1), which is the highest value compared with similar reported TiO2-based systems and over 1.7 times the reported highest value of Au0.75Pd0.25/TiO2 photocatalysts. More importantly, after more than 42 days (>500 h) of irradiation, the system still demonstrated high H-2 production activity, indicating the potential for practical application. This work provides a valuable strategy to improve both the efficiency and stability of photocatalytic FA dehydrogenation under mild conditions.

Abstract:TiO(2) nanoparticles compounded with different amounts of bismuth were prepared by a sol-gel method, and the effects of compounding bismuth on the phase transformation, photoinduced charge separation and photocatalytic activity for degrading rhodamine B solution were mainly investigated, along with enhancement mechanism of photocatalytic activity of TiO(2) nanoparticles by compounding bismuth species. It can be confirmed that, by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), compounding bismuth can extend the optical response, and effectively inhibit the phase transformation process from anatase to rutile, consequently greatly improving the anatase crystallinity so as to promote the photoinduced charge separation. These factors are responsible for the increase in the photocatalytic activity of TiO(2) compounded with an appropriate amount of bismuth species.

Abstract:Photoreforming is a clean photocatalytic technology for simultaneous plastic waste degradation and hydrogen fuel production, but there are still limited active and stable catalysts for this process. This work introduces the brookite polymorph of TiO2 as an active photocatalyst for photoreforming with an activity higher than anatase and rutile polymorphs for both hydrogen production and plastic degradation. Commercial brookite successfully converts polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic to acetic acid under light. The high activity of brookite is attributed to good charge separation, slow decay and moderate electron trap energy, which lead to a higher generation of hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals and accordingly enhanced photo-oxidation of PET plastic. These results introduce brookite as a stable and active catalyst for the photoconversion of water contaminated with microplastics to value-added organic compounds and hydrogen.

Abstract:A phase transformation of micron-sized TiO2 powder from anatase to rutile was attempted by heat-treatment in order to generate a new mixed crystal TiO2 with high associated photocatalytic activity. Heat-treated micron-sized TiO2 powders at different transition stages were characterized by X-ray diffiraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The tests of photocatalytic activity of the heat-treated micron-sized TiO2 powders were conducted by the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and Acid Red B under visible light irradiation. The results indicate that mixed crystal TiO2 photocatalyst heat-treated at 400 degrees C for 60 min shows the highest photocatalytic activity. It can effectively decompose the Rhodamine B and Acid Red B in aqueous solution after 6 h visible light irradiation. A remarkable improvement in photocatalytic activity of TiO2 is caused by the formation of combined rutile-anatase phases and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Explaining the High Photocatalytic Activity of a Mixed Phase TiO2: A Combined Effect of O2 and Crystallinity

Abstract:The synergistic effect between anatase and rutile TiO2 particles for organic photodegradation in an aerated aqueous suspension has been widely reported, ascribed to the charge transfer between two oxides increasing the efficiency of charge separation for the surface reaction. In this work, we have found different explanation. Four anatase and rutile samples, pretreated at different temperatures, were used as a starting material, and the biphase oxide was prepared by mixing them at various ratios in an alcoholic aqueous solvent, followed by sintering at 450 degrees C. For phenol photodegradation under air, the synergistic effect was observed with one set of the mixed oxides but not with others. When the reaction was carried out under N-2 in the presence of AgNO3, no synergistic effect was observed with any mixed oxide. For methylene blue photodegradation under air, the synergistic effect was also observed as reported, but such an effect was absent when dye adsorption on the oxide was taken into account. The difference in activity among differently prepared samples correlates well with the combined effect of oxide crystallinity and its sorption capacity toward O-2. We propose that the observed synergistic effect is due to O-2 transfer from anatase phase to rutile that explores the masked photoactivity of rutile particles.
