Abstract:With the prevalence of green chemistry and the concept of a harmonious society, humans have much greater environmental awareness than ever before. Mesoporous TiO 2 and its corresponding photocatalysts can assist the search for a better and more ideal life. In this review, we first briefly introduce the development of various mesoporous materials, after which we discuss the preparation and application of mesoporous TiO 2 materials in photocatalysis. When titanium oxide-based mesoporous materials are applied in photocatalysis, they exhibit excellent performance and many advantages in pollutant decomposition and H 2 evolution. In addition to the traditional TiO 2 -based mesoporous materials, novel materials such as Ti-metal organic frameworks are reviewed, as their application in H 2 evolution has garnered increasing research interest in recent years. It is evident from literature surveys that these TiO 2 -based mesoporous photocatalysts have significant potential for use in environmental and energy applications.

Abstract:A phase transformation of micron-sized TiO2 powder from anatase to rutile was attempted by heat-treatment in order to generate a new mixed crystal TiO2 with high associated photocatalytic activity. Heat-treated micron-sized TiO2 powders at different transition stages were characterized by X-ray diffiraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The tests of photocatalytic activity of the heat-treated micron-sized TiO2 powders were conducted by the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and Acid Red B under visible light irradiation. The results indicate that mixed crystal TiO2 photocatalyst heat-treated at 400 degrees C for 60 min shows the highest photocatalytic activity. It can effectively decompose the Rhodamine B and Acid Red B in aqueous solution after 6 h visible light irradiation. A remarkable improvement in photocatalytic activity of TiO2 is caused by the formation of combined rutile-anatase phases and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Abstract:The phase transformation from anatase to rutile of titanium dioxide (TiO2) was attempted by heat-treatment and a novel TiO2 catalyst with high photocatalytic activity under sunlight irradiation was obtained. The beat-treated anatase TiO2 powders at various transition stages were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (MM). The tests of photocatalytic activities of the beat-treated anatase TiO2 powders were conducted by the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution under sunlight irradiation. The results reveal that the anatase TiO2 powder beat-treated at 700 degrees C for 60 min shows the highest photocatalytic activity, which can effectively degrade rhodamine B in aqueous solution under sunlight irradiation. The remarkable improvement of photocatalytic activity of the anatase TiO2 powders was mainly elucidated by the formation of special interphase between rutile and anatase phases, which can limit the recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes efficiently. Abstract:Photocatalysis as represented by titanium dioxide can make many toxic organic pollutants degraded or mineralized into biogradable small molecules or carbon dioxide, the process involving active species such as hydroxyl radicals. This article, based on the author's group work, attempts to outline the recent development in photocatalysis or photosenstiztation of titanium dioxide, iron (hydr)oxides, polyoxometalates (POM) and metal phthalocyanines (MPc) for water treatment. The emphasis is put on the semiconductor photocatalysis by titanium dioxide. The discussion includes: (1) detection of singlet oxygen, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and various mechanisms proposed for their formation, (2) surface modification of catalyst with metal ions, POM and fluoride ions, and possible mechansims for their effects on the production of reactive species, and (3) immobilization of MPc onto ionic exchange resin and organoclay, and the influence on sorption and visible light induced degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous medium.
Single-crystalline Rutile TiO2 Nanorod Array on Flexible Ti Substrates for Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Phenol in Water

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanorods are intrinsic highways for charge transfer and hence ideal nanofeatures for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) degradations of pollutants in wastewater. Photocatalytic thin films on flexible substrates avoid the nuisance catalysts-recovering procedure and also allow for the flexible design in photo catalytic apparatus. We therefore directly deposited single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays on flexible and conductive Ti substrates through a hydrothermal technique and optimized the synthetic parameters to achieve an extremely high PEC activity towards phenol removal in water under UV light illumination. In the presence of tetrabutyltitanate (TBT) and HCl reactants under a hydrothermal environment, a balance in the erosion of the Ti substrate and the precipitation of TiO2 nanorods is found to be the key to tune the nanofeatures of the TiO2 thin films and in turn the PEC efficiency. The decreasing TBT concentration achieved a more sparsely distributed nanorod array, which significantly contributes to the PEC activity; yet too little TBT resulted in total dissolution of Ti plates. The PEC activity increased with increasing hydrothermal duration because of more loaded TiO2. The maximum reaction rate constant is 2.74 h(-1), which is 39 times that of a commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticulate film. The photocurrent stabilized at 0.9 mA/cm(2) under the illumination of AM1.5G simulated solar light, suggesting a high separation efficiency of photogenerated holes and electrons along the single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays.

Abstract:The extensive use of fossil fuels has sped up the global development of the world economy and is accompanied by significant problems, such as energy shortages and environmental pollution. Solar energy, an inexhaustible and clean energy resource, has emerged as a promising sustainable alternative. Light irradiation can be transformed into electrical/chemical energy, which can be used to remove pollutants or transform contaminants into high-value-added chemicals through photocatalytic reactions. Therefore, photocatalysis is a promising strategy to overcome the increasing energy and environmental problems. As is well-known, photocatalysts are key components of photocatalytic systems. Among the widely investigated photocatalysts, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has attracted great attention owing to its excellent light-driven redox capability and photochemical stability. However, its poor solar light response and rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs limit its photocatalytic applications. Therefore, strategies to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 by narrowing its bandgap and inhibiting the recombination of charges have been widely accepted. Constructing heterojunctions with other components, including cuprous oxide (Cu2O), has especially narrowed the bandgap, providing a promising means of solving the present challenges. This paper reviews the advances in research on heterostructured Cu2O/TiO2 photocatalysts, such as their synthesis methods, mechanisms for the enhancement of photocatalytic performance, and their applications in hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, selective synthesis, and the degradation of pollutants. The mechanism of charge separation and transfer through the Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunctions and the inherent factors that lead to the enhancement of photocatalytic performance are extensively discussed. Additionally, the current challenges in and future perspectives on the use of heterostructured Cu2O/TiO2 photocatalysts are also highlighted.

Abstract:The photocatalytic oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is a key step toward the conversion of solar energy to fuels. Understanding the detailed mechanism and kinetics of this reaction is important for the development of robust catalysts with improved efficiency. TiO2 is one of the best-known photocatalysts as well as a model system for the study of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here we use hybrid density functional based energetic calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the pathway and kinetics of the OER on the majority (101) surface of anatase TiO2 in a water environment. Our results show that terminal Ti-OH groups are stable intermediates at the aqueous (101) interface, in accord with the experimental observation that OH radicals are efficiently produced on anatase. Oxidation of Ti-OH gives rise to a second stable intermediate, a surface-bridging peroxo dimer ((O-2(2-))(br)) composed of one water and one surface lattice oxygen atom, consistent with the surface peroxo intermediates revealed by "in situ" measurements on rutile. Our calculations further predict that molecular oxygen evolves directly from (O-2(2-))(br) through a concerted two-electron transfer, thus leading to oxygen exchange between TiO2 and the adsorbed species. Oxygen exchange is found to be negligible on rutile, so that different OER pathways are likely to be operative on the two main TiO2 polymorphs. This difference could explain the observed lower OER activity of anatase relative to rutile.
Synergistic Effect of Rutile and Brookite TiO2 for Photocatalytic Formic Acid Dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Solar energy is an ideal clean and inexhaustible energy source. Solar-driven formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation is one of the promising strategies to address safety and cost issues related to the storage, transport, and distribution of hydrogen energy. For FA dehydrogenation, the O-H and C-H cleavages are the key steps, and developing a photocatalyst with the ability to break these two bonds is critical. In this work, both density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental results confirmed the positive synergistic effect between brookite and rutile TiO2 for O-H and C-H cleavage in HCOOH. Further, brookite TiO2 is beneficial to the generation of the (OH)-O-center dot radical and significantly promotes C-H cleavage in formate. Under optimized conditions, the H-2 production efficiency of FA dehydrogenation can reach up to 30.4 mu molmg(-1)h(-1), which is the highest value compared with similar reported TiO2-based systems and over 1.7 times the reported highest value of Au0.75Pd0.25/TiO2 photocatalysts. More importantly, after more than 42 days (>500 h) of irradiation, the system still demonstrated high H-2 production activity, indicating the potential for practical application. This work provides a valuable strategy to improve both the efficiency and stability of photocatalytic FA dehydrogenation under mild conditions.

Photocatalysis of V-bearing rutile on degradation of halohydrocarbons

Abstract:Natural rutile TiO2 shows photocatalysis on degrading trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. In natural rutile, V, Fe, Cu, etc. substitute for Ti, resulting in lattice distortions and defects. We found that rutile, after heating, quenching and electron irradiation, changes its surface characteristics and photoactivity. The quenched rutile has the highest concentrations of adsorbed water and V on its surface, resulting in high photoactivity. For example, quenching at 1273 and 1373K significantly improved photoactivity of rutile. The heated rutile also increased the concentration of adsorption water on the surface, e.g., rutile heated to 1273K improved degradation rate of halohydrocarbons. On the contrary, electron irradiation decreased the concentration of adsorbed water on the rutile’s surface, which results in lower degradation rate for trichloroethylene. Therefore, heating and quenching over 1237K improve the photocatalytic efficiency of the natural V-bearing rutile on degrading halohydrocarbons. The XRD spectra of the rutile samples showed that heating, quenching and electron irradiation did not result in formation of new phases or phase transitions.

Abstract:Renewable fuels and environmental remediation are of paramount importance in today's world due to escalating concerns about climate change, pollution, and the finite nature of fossil fuels. Transitioning to sustainable energy sources and addressing environmental pollution has become an urgent necessity. Photocatalysis, particularly harnessing solar energy to drive chemical reactions for environmental remediation and clean fuel production, holds significant promise among emerging technologies. As a benchmark semiconductor in photocatalysis, TiO 2 photocatalyst offers an excellent solution for environmental remediation and serves as a key tool in energy conversion and chemical synthesis. Despite its status as the default photocatalyst, TiO 2 suffers from drawbacks such as a high recombination rate of charge carriers, low electrical conductivity, and limited absorption in the visible light spectrum. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamental principles of photocatalytic reactions and presents recent advancements in the development of TiO 2 photocatalysts. It specifically focuses on strategic approaches aimed at enhancing the performance of TiO 2 photocatalysts, including improving visible light absorption for efficient solar energy harvesting, enhancing charge separation and transportation efficiency, and ensuring stability for robust photocatalysis. Additionally, the review delves into the application of photodegradation and photocatalysis, particularly in critical processes such as water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide generation, and alcohol oxidation. It also highlights the novel use of TiO 2 in plastic polymerization and degradation, showcasing its potential for converting plastic waste into valuable chemicals and fuels, thereby offering sustainable waste management solutions. By addressing these essential areas, the review offers valuable insights into the potential of TiO 2 photocatalysis for addressing pressing environmental and energy challenges. Furthermore, the review encompasses the application of TiO 2 photochromic systems, expanding its scope to include other innovative research and applications. Finally, it addresses the underlying challenges and provides perspectives on the future development of TiO 2 photocatalysts. Through addressing these issues and implementing innovative strategies, TiO 2 photocatalysis can continue to evolve and play a pivotal role in sustainable energy and environmental applications.

Well-designed Submicron Rutile Pigment Heterophase Junction Photocatalyst Via Sol-Gel Method for Organic Pollutants Removal

Abstract:Nano TiO2 is an acclaimed photocatalyst, widely used in water treatment due to its remarkable performance. However, challenges in real production, such as the easy recombination of photogenerated carriers and recycling difficulties, limit its application. Heterojunction photocatalysts, with high efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation and large light absorption range, show great potential for efficient water pollution treatment. In this paper, a composite photocatalyst (ART-550) with a heterophase junction structure was developed using industrial submicron rutile TiO2 pigment as the carrier. This composite demonstrated excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of sulfadiazine, maintaining its performance over five cycles. Furthermore, it effectively degraded various representative organic pollutants present in water bodies. The construction of a heterophase junction boosted the efficient separation of photo-generated carriers, enabling more active species to participate in the reaction and thus enhancing the photocatalytic degradation performance. Additionally, the strong interfacial binding ensured the stability of the photocatalytic performance of ART-550. This research introduces a new strategy to broaden the application field of submicron rutile and produce nano-titanium dioxide catalysts that are easily accessible, scalable, and highly applicable. It offers promising prospects for advancing water treatment technologies.

Abstract:While modern industry has contributed to the prosperity of an increasingly urbanized society, it has also led to serious pollution problems, with discharged wastewater and exhaust gases causing significant environmental harm. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is an excellent photocatalyst, has received extensive attention because it is inexpensive and able to photocatalytically degrade pollutants in an environmentally friendly manner. TiO2 has many advantages, including high chemical stability, low toxicity, low operating costs, and environmental friendliness. TiO2 is an N-order semiconductor material with a bandgap of 3.2 eV. Only when the wavelength of ultraviolet light is less than or equal to 387.5 nm can the valence band electrons obtain the energy of the photons and pass through the conduction band and form photoelectrons, while the valence band, correspondingly, forms photogenerated holes, and light in other areas will not be generated. The most common methods used to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2 involve increasing its photoresponse range and reducing photogenerated-carrier coupling. The morphology, size, and structure of a heterojunction can be altered through element doping, leading to improved photocatalytic efficiency. Mainstream methods for preparing TiO2 are reviewed in this paper, with several excellent preparation schemes for improving the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2 introduced. TiO2 is mainly prepared using sol-gel, solvothermal, hydrothermal, anodic oxidation, microwave-assisted, CVD and PVD methods, and TiO2 nanoparticles with excellent photocatalytic properties can also be prepared. Ti-containing materials are widely used to purify harmful gases, as well as contaminants from building materials, coatings, and daily necessities. Therefore, the preparation and applications of titanium materials have become globally popular research topics.

Abstract:The spatial separation of reduction and oxidation reaction sites on the different facets of a semiconductor is an ideal and promising route for overall photocatalytic water splitting due to efficient charge carrier separation. Rutile TiO2 has separate oxidation and reduction crystal facets and can be used to achieve direct splitting of pure water under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. In order to improve the rate of water oxidation reaction, the ratio of different crystal facets of rutile should be regulated controllably. However, the preparation of rutile TiO2 architecture has been limited by the availability of synthetic techniques. In this study, rutile TiO2 nanorods with various aspect ratios were accurately prepared in the presence of Cl- anions and H+ cations, which were found to play a crucial role in forming the morphology of rutile TiO2 nanorods. In addition, the mechanism involving the growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods with different aspect ratios is proposed. Rutile TiO2 nanorods with a high proportion of oxidative (111) facets provided higher overall water splitting reactivity.

Abstract:Nano-sized TiO2 photocatalytic water-splitting technology has great potential for low-cost, environmentally friendly solar-hydrogen production to support the future hydrogen economy. Presently, the solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency is too low for the technology to be economically sound. The main barriers are the rapid recombination of photo-generated electron/hole pairs as well as backward reaction and the poor activation of TiO2 by visible light. In response to these deficiencies, many investigators have been conducting research with an emphasis on effective remediation methods. Some investigators studied the effects of addition of sacrificial reagents and carbonate salts to prohibit rapid recombination of electron/hole pairs and backward reactions. Other research focused on the enhancement of photocatalysis by modification of TiO2 by means of metal loading, metal ion doping, dye sensitization, composite semiconductor, anion doping and metal ion-implantation. This paper aims to review the up-to-date development of the above-mentioned technologies applied to TiO2 photocatalytic hydrogen production. Based on the studies reported in the literature, metal ion-implantation and dye sensitization are very effective methods to extend the activating spectrum to the visible range. Therefore, they play an important role in the development of efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Engineering oxygen vacancy on rutile TiO2 for efficient electron-hole separation and high solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy (VO) plays a vital role in semiconductor photocatalysis. Rutile TiO2 nanomaterials with controllable contents of VO (0–2.18%) are fabricated via an in situ solid-state chemical reduction strategy, with color from white to black. The bandgap of the resultant rutile TiO2 is reduced from 3.0 to 2.56 eV, indicating the enhanced visible light absorption. The resultant rutile TiO2 with optimal contents of VO (∼2.07%) exhibits a high solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 734 μmol h−1, which is about four times as high as that of the pristine one (185 μmol h−1). The presence of VO elevates the apparent Fermi level of rutile TiO2 and promotes the efficient electronhole separation obviously, which favor the escape of photogenerated electrons and prolong the life-time (7.6×103 ns) of photogenerated charge carriers, confirmed by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy, surface photovoltage spectroscopy and transient-state fluorescence. VO-mediated efficient photogenerated electron-hole separation strategy may provide new insight for fabricating other high-performance semiconductor oxide photocatalysts.
