Abstract:[Fe-II(dcbpy)(2)(H2O)(2)] (dcbpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid) complex was synthesized through a simple method and used as a photosensitizer to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in the photodegradation of phenol under visible light irradiation. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UVvis spectroscopy, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the structure and morphology of [Fe-II(dcbpy)(2)(H2O)(2)]/TiO2. It exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in photodecomposition of phenol in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation compared with that of pure TiO2. When one of ligand dcbpy was replaced by bpy (2,2'-bipyridine) or phen (1,10-phenanthroline), two novel composite catalysts, [Fe-II(dcbpy)(bpy)(2)]/TiO2 and [Fe-II(dcbpy)(phen)(2)]/TiO2, were obtained and exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity like that of [Fe-II(dcbpy)(2)(H2O)(2)]/TiO2. Their different performance in the degradation of phenol, derived from their different interfacial interaction and electron transfer between complexes and TiO2 surface, are discussed in detail. Based on research on the dynamical process of photocatalytic degradation of phenol, recycling stability, absorption spectra, photoelectrochemistry performance and cyclic voltammetry, trapping experiments, and density functional theory calculations of quantum chemistry, possible electron transfer mechanism are proposed, which can reasonably explain the different photocatalytic activities of these three novel catalysts. Abstract:A trinity interaction model of 4,4′-biphenol photodegradation in TiO2 suspension containing cyclodextrin was proposed in this work. Both direct and indirect degradation should be taken into account. It would be beneficial to have a depth-in mechanism of CD effect on reactant's photodegradation in TiO2 suspension that would probably lead to a high efficiency and selectivity for the photodegradation of pollutants.

Improved Photocatalytic Activity for Phenol Degradation of Rutile TiO2 on the Addition of CuWO4 and Possible Mechanism

Abstract:Rutile is much less active than anatase and brookite for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution. In this work, we found that addition of a trace amount of CuWO4 greatly accelerated phenol degradation in an aerated aqueous suspension of rutile. The increased rate was not only much higher than those of anatase and brookite, prepared at the same temperature (600 degrees C), but also increased continuously with the sintering temperature of rutile from 150 to 800 degrees C. These observations indicate that the high intrinsic photocatalytic activity of rutile produced at a high sintering temperature can be exploited by using co-catalyst CuWO4. Furthermore, as the amount of CuWO4 added to the suspension increased, the amount of H2O2 produced in the presence of excess phenol increased and then decreased; the trend was similar to that observed for phenol degradation. The observed positive effect of CuWO4 is mainly caused by solid CuWO4 rather than Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution. A (photo) electrochemical measurement showed that interfacial electron transfer occurred from the irradiated rutile to CuWO4. This would improve the charge-separation efficiency, and consequently increase the rates of O-2 reduction and phenol degradation.
Cooperative Effect Between Cation and Anion of Copper Phosphate on the Photocatalytic Activity of Tio2 for Phenol Degradation in Aqueous Suspension

Abstract:Surface modification of TiO2 with CuO or calcium phosphate (CaP) can result in enhancement in the photocatalytic activity for organic degradation. In this work, we report on a synergism between the cation and anion of copper phosphate (CuP) on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, for phenol degradation in aerated aqueous suspension under UV light at wavelengths longer than 320 nm. Photocatalysts were prepared by mixing TiO2 and CuP powders in isopropyl alcohol, followed by drying at 90 degrees C. As CuP loading increased, the activity of the modified TiO2 first increased and then decreased The maximum activity was observed with the catalyst containing 0.1 wt % CuP, which was about 1.9-3.4 times that of bare TiO2 (anatase, rutile, and their mixture) and also exceeded that of the modified TiO2 with CuO or CaP. During five repeated tests, the catalyst activity was stable, without detectable leaching of cupric and phosphate ions into aqueous solution Solid characterization with several techniques including electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy revealed that CuP particles at low loading were highly dispersed onto TiO2 as a kind of clusters, whereas the TiO2 phase, in different samples remained nearly unchanged in terms of the crystal structure, surface area, and crystallinity. Upon exposure to UV light, the EPR signal of Cu(II) in CuP or CuO-modifed TiO2 was unchanged in air but slightly decreased in N-2. Moreover, CuP-modified TiO2 showed a higher capacity than bare TiO2 and CuO- or CaP-modified TiO2 for the uptake of 2,4-dichlorophenol from water. It is proposed that cupric and phosphate ions act as an electron scavenger and organic sorbent, which facilitate electron and hole transfer, respectively. Their co-operation would significantly improve the efficiency of charge separation, and thus increase the rate of phenol degradation.

Abstract:Copper ions in aqueous solution are known to promote organic oxidation in semiconductor photocatalysis, but the counter anions seem to be important as well. In this work, the performance of Cu(ClO4)2 in presence of several anions in sodium forms (F−, Cl−, ClO4−, NO3−, and SO42−) has been examined. Phenol oxidation in aqueous solution (pH 4) under UV light was used as model reaction and TiO2 in the forms of anatase (AT) and rutile (RT) as photocatalysts. On the addition of 0.1–5 mM Cu2+, the reactions on AT and RT all increased. On the addition of 1 mM anions, reactions on AT increased by F−and SO42−, but reactions on RT all decreased. In presence of 3 mM Cu2+, however, reactions on AT and RT all decreased by 1 mM anions except NO3−. Such anion effects were also observed for H2 production on AT and RT in presence of Cu2+ and 10% methanol. A possible mechanism for the positive and negative anion effects is discussed. This work indicates that the formation of a Cu(II)/Cu(I) complex with anions weakens the positive effect of copper ions on organic oxidation in TiO2 photocatalysis.

Abstract:With the approach of anodic oxidation, TiO2/Ti film doped with Cu2+ was produced in H2SO4 electrolyte mixed with CuSO4. The surface morphology and the roughness of the films were studied with atomic force microscopy. The phase composition of the films was studied by X-ray diffraction. The photocatalytic activity of the films was compared through the photocatalytic degradation rate of phenol. The relations of the photocatalytic activity to the concentration of Cu2+, the microstructure and the surface roughness of the film were investigated. The results showed that Cu2+ increased the surface roughness and restrained the growth of crystal. In addition, the phenol in aqueous solution was successfully photodegraded under visible light irradiation by Cu2+-TiO2/Ti film. The composition and structure of the film affected the catalytic activity greatly. Compared with TiO2/Ti film, the recombination rate of e- and h+ of Cu2+-TiO2/Ti film was decreased.

Abstract:Films of TiO2 nanotubes distributed over the inner surface of a discharge reactor cylinder (CTD) or adhered to a stainless steel electrode surface (PTD) in a discharge reactor were compared with a single-discharge (SD) system to investigate their efficiencies in phenol degradation. Morphology studies indicated that the TiO2 film was destroyed in the PTD system, but that there was no change in the CTD system after discharge. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the anatase phase of the original sample was preserved in the CTD system, but that an anatase-to-rutile phase transformation occurred in the PTD system after discharge. The highest efficiencies of phenol degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization were observed in the CTD system, and there was no decrease in phenol degradation efficiency upon reuse of a TiO2 film, indicating high catalysis activity and stability of the TiO2 photocatalysts in the combined treatment. TiO2 photocatalysts favored the formation of hydrogen peroxide and disfavored the formation of ozone. A greater degree of oxidation of intermediates and higher energy efficiency in phenol oxidation were observed with the TiO2-plasma systems, especially in the CTD system, compared to those with the SD system.
Improved Photocatalytic Activity of Tio2 on the Addition of Cuwo4

Abstract:Various methods that aim to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report that addition of CuWO4 into the aqueous suspension of TiO2 can result in significant enhancement in the rate of phenol degradation. As the amount of CuWO4 increased, the rate of phenol degradation increased and then decreased. A maximum rate of phenol degradation observed with 2 wt % CuWO4 was about 2.83 times that in the absence of CuWO4. A similar result was also observed with CuO. However, six consecutive tests showed that CuWO4/TiO2 was much more stable than CuO/TiO2, due to the very high stability of CuWO4 against photocorrosion. The improved activity of TiO2 is not due to CuWO4 and CuO themselves and also does not match their solubility in aqueous solution. Moreover, for the generation of OH radicals, and for the decomposition of H2O2 in aqueous solution, CuWO4/TiO2 was also more active than TiO2. Through a (photo) electrochemical measurement, a possible mechanism is proposed, involving electron transfer from the irradiated TiO2 to CuWO4 that facilitates the charge separation of TiO2 and consequently accelerates reactions at interfaces.

Abstract:A series of TiO2-Cu2O mixed oxides were prepared by the hydrolysis of titanium butoxide and reduction of copper acetate with hydrazine.The photocatalytic degradations of the reactive brilliant red X-3Bover the TiO2-Cu2O were investigated under the irradiation with visible light.The effects of composition,amount of catalyst and the diluted oxygen as well as H2O2 were studied.In addition,the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of organic compounds over the Cu2O and TiO2-Cu2O was discussed.The results showed that the complex oxides exhibited higher activity than single Cu2O due to the synergetic effect between TiO2 and Cu2O.The oxidative species in Cu2O were believed to be free radical·OH and electric holes.·OH free radicals were originated from the super oxygen anions,which were produced from the reduction of oxygen absorbed on the surface of Cu2O by photoelectrons.The holes produced through light excitation could not oxidize OH-to·OH directly.

Abstract:Photocatalytic experiment results under visible light demonstrate that both TiO2 and Cu2O have low activity for brilliant red X-3B degradation and neither can produce H2 from water splitting. In comparison, TiO2/Cu2O composite can do the both efficiently. Further investigation shows that the formation of Ti3+ under visible light has great contribution. The mechanism of photocatalytic reaction is proposed based on energy band theory and experimental results. The photogenerated electrons from Cu2O were captured by Ti4+ ions in TiO2 and Ti4+ ions were further reduced to Ti3+ ions. Thus, the photogenerated electrons were stored in Ti3+ ions as the form of energy. These electrons trapped in Ti3+ can be released if a suitable electron acceptor is present. So, the electrons can be transferred to the interface between the composite and solution to participate in photocatalytic reaction. XPS spectra of TiO2/Cu2O composite before and after visible light irradiation were carried out and provided evidence for the presence of Ti3+. The image of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that TiO2 combines with Cu2O tightly. So, the photogenerated electrons can be transferred from Cu2O to TiO2.

Abstract:In this work, the effects of H+, Cl- and CH3COOH on the photocatalytic conversion of PtCl6 2- in an aqueous TiO2 dispersion were studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The results obtained show that PtCl6 2-, in the form of its hydrolysis product, is photocatalytically converted into a solid deposit on the TiO2 surface; the quantity and composition of the solid deposit vary with the degree of PtCl6 2- hydrolysis. When both H+ and Cl- concentrations are sufficiently high to depress the hydrolysis of PtCl6 2-, no deposit is observed on the TiO2 surface. The effect of CH3COOH on the composition of the photocatalytic product of PtCl6 2- on the TiO2 surface is closely related to the degree of ionization of CH3COOH. ? 1995.

Abstract:TiO2 nanoparticles incorporated with CuInS2 clusters were prepared in a solvothermal process and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersion X-ray analysis (EDX). Compared with pure TiO2 nanoparticles, the TiO2 nanoparticles incorporated with CuInS2 clusters display higher photocatalytic activity with 99.9% of degradation ratio of 4-nitrophenol after 2h irradiation. In order to investigate the effect of the CuInS2 clusters on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles, diffuse reflectance UV–Vis spectra (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and photocurrent action spectra were measured. The results indicate that the enhanced photocatalytic activity is probably due to the interface between TiO2 and CuInS2 as a trap of the photogenerated electrons to decrease the recombination of electrons and holes.

Abstract:Surface modification of TiO(2) with Fe(2)O(3) clusters was made through chemisorption of ferric phthalocyaninetetracarboxylate onto TiO(2), followed by sintering in air to remove organic moiety. Solid characterization with electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and other techniques showed that ferric oxides were highly dispersed on TiO(2) as a noncrystallized cluster, while TiO(2) phases remained unchanged. For phenol degradation in aerated aqueous suspension, only the sample containing less than 0.3 at.% Fe was more active than bare TiO(2) under UV light, whereas no activity was found under visible light. As anatase thermally transferred into rutile, the Fe-containing catalyst became less active than bare TiO(2), mainly ascribed to the increased size of Fe(2)O(3) clusters. In the presence of H(2)O(2), all Fe-containing catalysts were more active than bare TiO(2). Moreover, similar trend in activity among different catalysts was also observed with the formation of hydroxyl radicals, and with the generation of photocurrent measured under N(2) with Fe/TiO(2) electrode. Present work clearly shows that only Fe(2)O(3) clusters in a small size and at low coverage on TiO(2) are beneficial to the photocatalytic reaction, while excess iron oxide is detrimental. Possible mechanism is discussed in the text.

Abstract:Crystallite size and crystallinity have been recognized as important parameters that influence the photocatalytic performance of pristine TiO2 nanoparticles. But how these two parameters individually affect the photo-reactivity of TiO2 remains unclear and debated due to the difficulties in preparing well-controlled TiO2 photocatalysts that vary crystallite size and crystallinity independently. Here, we have studied the effect of crystallite size and crystallinity on phenol photo-decomposition using well-defined anatase nanoparticles synthesized under supercritical water-isopropanol conditions. The photo-reactivity was found to increase with increasing crystallite size but to be independent of the crystallinity. By tracking the evolution of phenolic intermediates, we explored the reaction kinetics and demonstrated that an increase in the crystallite size of anatase nanoparticles can significantly suppress undesired hydroquinone-benzoquinone redox reactions and thus promote the full decomposition of phenol and phenolic compounds.
