Abstract:We compared the performance of the EDFA and the SOA in a wavelength tunable fiber ring structure. Wide tuning ranges of 25 nm and 35 nm are achieved with a fiber ring laser using EDFA and SOA, respectively. The laser using the SOA has a broader wavelength tuning range and a stronger red shift to L-band.

Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser incorporating an semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based on a tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (as a comb filter) is proposed. Wavelength-spacing can be continuously tuned and multi-wavelength lasing with wavelength spacings of 0.4 nm, 0.8 nm, and 1.6 nm is demonstrated. The output of the proposed multi-wavelength laser is rather stable at room temperature and the output spectra can be adjusted by controlling the bias current of the SOA and the power of the pump laser diode.

Abstract:Broad-band tunability of erbium-doped silica fiber ring lasers in the 1.48–1.62-$\mu$m wavelength band is demonstrated through modeling and experiment. Tunability over the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) C- and L-bands is achieved with a simple laser design using a single gain medium working in deep saturation. A comprehensive numerical model based on an iterative solution of propagation rate equations and spectrally resolved Giles parameters was used to analyze the impact of various laser variables. The dependence of laser output power on total cavity loss, erbium-doped fiber length, pump power, and lasing wavelength has been investigated. The calculated laser characteristics have been found in good quantitative agreement with the experimentally obtained data. Experimental results concerning wavelength tunability, output power, and lasing wavelength repeatability/stability and spectral purity are also presented in this paper.

Abstract:We report a widely tunable V-cavity laser monolithically integrated with an electro-absorption modulator (EAM). The device shows a 41-nm wavelength tunability covering 51 channels at 100 GHz spacing on the ITU grid, with a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) higher than 47 dB. Error-free transmission over 50 km standard single-mode fiber at 10 Gb/s is demonstrated at all wavelengths over the tuning range. The integrated EAM exhibits a dynamic extinction ratio higher than 12.5 dB. The bit-error-rate measurements show a power penalty less than 3 dB for 50-km transmission. The results demonstrate that this ultra-compact and regrowth-free electro-absorption modulated tunable laser can be a cost-effective transmitter solution for DWDM metropolitan and access networks.

Abstract:A compact erbium-doped ring-shaped fiber laser suitable for fiber-optic sensing applications has been developed. The fiber laser utilized a tunable fiber Fabry–Perot filter as the tuning element and had a moderate milli-Watt level power output over almost the whole tuning range from 1530 to 1595nm with a power fluctuation of 0.15dB. High repetition rate scanning of laser operation over the whole tuning range was achieved at rates of up to 200Hz. Moreover, the performance of the ring-shaped fiber laser configured with a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber was investigated for its larger wavelength tunability of over 100nm. Output power characteristics of this ring-shaped fiber laser were also investigated when it worked in a scanning mode. A distorted power wavelength dependence, as well as some pulsing phenomenon were observed in scanning mode.

Abstract:A semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA) multi-wavelength fiber ring laser with a Mach-Zehnder(M-Z) fiber interferometer was reported and stable multi-wavelength continuous-wave lasing oscillations with channel spacing of 100 GHz are achieved with the 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 19.5 nm and signal-to-noise ratio higher than 30 dB.It is observed that the output power variation of the 22 wavelengths in 17.9 nm is 1.2 dB and total output power is 5.1 dBm.The wide spectrum and low output power variation acquired in this laser are attributed to the self-averaging of multi-wavelength optical power induced by gain saturation and four-wave mixing(FWM) in SOA under the low cavity loss condition.The decrease of the spectral bandwidth and center wavelength with the decrease of driving current of SOA or the increase of cavity loss observed in the experiment was also discussed.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on an all-fiber filter. The filter consists of an optical circulator, a fiber loop mirror(FLM) and a polarizer which is spliced to a segment of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) at the angle of 45 degrees with respect to the fast axis of the PMF. The laser can be tuned by adjusting two polarization controllers (PC) in the laser. The tuning range can reach to 6.08nm (1553.92-1560.1nm) with side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 38 dB. The stability of the laser is verified at room temperature in one hour, and the power fluctuation of the laser is less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:A wideband frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a narrowband phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG) and wavelength tuning of the laser is proposed and demonstrated. With assistance of an optical single-sideband modulator, the PSFBG with a narrow transmission peak acts like an equivalent high-Q microwave filter to select the oscillation frequency. Frequency tunability of the OEO can be simply realized by tuning the wavelength of a laser source. An X-band optoelectronic oscillating signal with frequency tunable at wide range from 8.4 to 11.8 GHz is generated and its performance is investigated in the experiment.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength fiber ring laser operating in L-band with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is reported by using a Mach-Zehnder(M-Z) fiber interferometer with channel spacing of 100 GHz as comb filter and an electro-absorption modulator(EAM) as actively mode-locking device.11 simultaneously mode-locked wavelengths are achieved with the repetition rate of 10 GHz and center wavelength of 1 593.6 nm. It is observed that the full-width at half-maximum of the pulses is about 24 ps and the output power variation of the 11 wavelengths is less than 1 dB. This scheme has good characteristics such as stable operation, wide optical spectrum and low output power variation.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser incorporating a semiconductor optical amplifier. The SOA biased in its low-gain regime greatly reduces the gain competition of the two wavelengths. The stable SLM operation is guaranteed by a passive triple-ring cavity and a fiber Fabry-Perot filter. The dual-wavelength output with a 40 GHz wavelength spacing is switchable in the range of 1533-1565.4 nm. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A Semiconductor Optical Amplifier(SOA)-based multi-wavelength fiber ring laser using frequency shifted feedback technology is reported in this paper,in which an Acousto-Optic Modulator(AOM) is incorporated as a frequency shifter and a Mach-Zehnder(M-Z) fiber interferometer is used as a comb filter.54 50 GHz-spaced stable continuous multi-wavelength optical lasing in a range of 1.5 dB output optical spectrum and 21.7 nm bandwidth are obtained with an extinction ratio of 28 dB.This laser is characteristic of stable operation,wide output optical spectrum and low output power variations.Experimental results indicate that effective gain equalization between different lasing oscillations is achieved and the output optical spectrum bandwidth increased by 21.7% by using this technology.

Abstract:We propose a novel multi-wavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) based on a ring cavity. A highly nonlinear fiber and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by two 3-dB optical couplers are used as the gain medium and the comb filter, respectively. Multi-wavelength lasing of the MW-FOPO with an ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm is achieved. The output spectrum of the MW-FOPO covers a wavelength regime from 1510 nm to 1615 nm (for lasing wavelengths with the power that exceeds -60 dBm). The stability of the MW-FOPO is discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A comparison of the output spectra between the MW-FOPO and the multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:A widely tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated, which is achieved by combining a fiber Lyot filter and a saturable absorber in a ring cavity. Stable SLM operation from 1045 nm to 1076 nm is obtained by properly adjusting the polarization state. The output power reaches 7.5 dBm with a fluctuation of less than 2 dB. The optical signal-to-noise ratio is 42.5 dB with a fluctuation of less than 6 dB in this wavelength range.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) narrow linewidth erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser (EDFRL) in a cost-effective way. The laser incorporates an unpumped-EDF-based saturable absorber (SA) and a self-injection feedback loop for mode selection. The EDFDRL exhibits linear tunability of 12.57 pm/ C from 15 C to 45 C with a maximum tuning range of 0.3664 nm. At a pump current of 200 mA, we achieve a SLM EDFRL characterized by a high OSNR of 75 dB and an ultra-narrow linewidth of 330 Hz. Furthermore, it shows an excellent wavelength stability, with a maximum fluctuation of only 11.23 pm.

Abstract:An external cavity wavelength-fiber ring laser (ECWTFL) based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and a combined wavelength scanning filter in the Littrow configuration is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With the benefit of the combination of an external cavity wavelength filter and a Lyot filter, the laser achieves a single-mode narrow linewidth output with a linewidth of 1.75 kHz. The wavelength tuning range reaches 133 nm, covering the entire S + C band. The proposed ECWTFL is used for demodulation of a fiber EFPI sensor; the result shows that the proposed ECWTFL has the ability to demodulate the small cavity-length FPI sensor.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser with flattened output power spectrum over a broadband is proposed and demonstrated. The power flattening is achieved using a high-birefringence fiber loop mirror, in which a number of high-birefringence fiber sections and polarization controllers are used to get a reflection spectrum that can compensate for the output power spectrum. The wavelength tuning is realized by compressing or stretching the FBGs in the laser cavity. A 1×3 switchable fiber Bragg grating array is incorporated into the fiber ring to get a wideband tuning range of 38 nm, from 1527 to 1565 nm. Within this range, the output power uniformity is controlled within ±0.8 dB. The total output power is about 4 dBm, the 3-dB linewidth is 0.01 nm, and the side mode suppression ratio is more than 48 dB.

Abstract:A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly adjusted through the wavelength-dependent polarization rotation mechanism.

Abstract:<p>A novel widely tunable and interval-adjustable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. It is based on the cascaded structure of two-segment Sagnac filter and Lyot filter with the assistance of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). By properly adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs) in the laser cavity, the output wavelengths with different flexible lasing states can be obtained, such as tunable single-, dual-, triple-wavelength outputs with a tuning range more than 18 nm. The outputs of quad-, quintuple-, sextuple- and septuple-wavelength can also be tuned, but the step size of the tuning is not fixed due to the intense wavelength competition. In addition, the outputs can achieve changes in wavelength interval. The switchability and tuning range of the laser have been greatly improved, and the wavelength interval adjustment is more flexible. The maximum SMSR of the output laser can up to 47 dB. This EDFL can be used in optical fiber sensing, WDM network and other fields desiring very flexible optical source.</p>
