Abstract:The designed long distance fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system based on long period fiber grating (LPFG) and Er-doped fiber (EDF)/Raman hybrid amplification optimizes the signal-oisc ratio (SNR) and promotes sensing distance to 50 km. Such a system employs a powerful swept laser as the light source and demodulation system. By adding LPFG. the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise of bidirectional Raman amplification and FBG backward reflective noise are reduced. Meanwhile, by utilizing left pump power, the dual circulators EDF structure is used for ASE light generation to illuminate the back-located FBG sensors and amplify the sensor signals to improve their SNR. Compared with EDF/Raman hybrid amplification, the hybrid amplification with LPFG achieves that 4.40 dB and 4.38 dB SNR are increased for FBG 1 and FBG 2 respectively, and over 15 dB SNR is achieved for four FBG sensors distributed along 50 km.

Abstract:Recent progress in long-distance in-Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor systems at University of Electronic Science & Technology of China (UESTC) is reviewed in this paper. Two novel approaches with a 50km transmission distance are proposed and demonstrated. The first one is based on the combination of bidirectional Raman amplification and a dual Erbium-Doped Fiber (EDF) configuration. A good Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of ~16dB is achieved with only a pump power of ~280 mW, which is ~10 dB higher than that without amplification. The second is based on a novel tunable fiber ring laser configuration with hybrid Raman/EDFA configuration. Experimental results show that an excellent optical SNR of ~60 dB has been achieved for a 50 km transmission distance with a low Raman pump power of ~170 mW and a low EDFA pump power of ~40 mW at wavelength of 980 nm. It is anticipated that these long-distance FBG sensing systems could find important applications in health monitoring of large infra-structures, such as oil or gas pipelines, ultra-long bridges and tunnels, river banks, and so on.

Abstract:A novel tunable fiber ring laser configuration with a combination of Raman amplification and erbium-doped fiber amplification (EDFA) is proposed for realizing high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), ultra-long distance (300 km) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor systems. The hybrid Raman–EDF amplification configuration can enhance the optical SNR of FBG sensor signals significantly, so the optical power reflected by the fiber Bragg grating can be compensated. A good optical SNR of 15 dB is achieved for a 275 km transmission distance, which is the best performance to our knowledge, and about 4 dB at 300 km. In the static strain experiments with fiber lengths of 100,200,250,300 km, the linearity is greater than 0.999. This system can be widely used in the ultra-long-distance sensing applications such as railways, oil(gas) pipelines and coastline.

Abstract:A novel fiber laser method based on the combination of the bidirectional Raman amplification and the dual Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) based configurations is proposed for performance enhancement of long distance fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor systems to achieve quasi-distributed measurement. The laser produced by the ring made up of EDF and filter is the light source, the Raman fiber amplifier is used for achieving low-noise bidirectional amplification of FBG signals while the EDF arranged remotely is used for the illumination of remotely-located FBG sensors beyond the second EDF arrangement and the compensation of the fiber loss due to long-distance transmission. Experimental results show that the performance of the sensor system has been improved significantly. An excellent SNR of -58 dB has been achieved for a 50 km transmission distance with low power pump.

Abstract:Distributed fiber sensing (DFS) can provide real-time signals and warnings. The entire length of fiber optic cable can act as a sensing element, but the accuracy is sometimes limited. On the other hand, point-to-point fiber sensing (PPFS) is usually implemented using one or more fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) at specific positions along with the fiber for the monitoring of specific parameters (temperature, strain, pressure, and so on). However, the cost becomes expensive when the number of FBGs increases. A hybrid fiber sensing scheme is thus proposed, combining the advantages of DFS and PPFS. It is based on a Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) fiber system with additional FBGs embedded at certain positions where it is necessary to detect specific parameters. The hybrid fiber sensing system has the advantages of full sensing coverage at essential locations that need to be carefully monitored. In our work, the test results showed that the proposed system could achieve a sensing distance of 16 km with the single-mode fiber with a 2 m spatial resolution. For FBG parameter measurements, the temperature variation was 52 °C, from 25 °C to 77 °C, with a temperature sensitivity of 23 pm/°C, and the strain was from 0 to 400 με, with a strain sensitivity of 0.975 pm/με, respectively, using two FBGs.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system is proposed with large capacity and long transmission distance to achieve multi-parameter measurements. Record system performances are achieved via the use of high-order random lasing and remote optical pumping amplifications as well as the combination of time-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing technologies. The experimental results show that the sensing distance can reach 150km with single-end amplification and the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is >4dB with good linearity of 0.9992 for 308 FBGs. We also proposed a new denoising method based on deep-learning, and the OSNR is enhanced to 10.2dB from 4.1dB, which is much better than the wavelet and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) methods reported, ensuring the high accuracy of the center wavelength detection with deep-learning denoising correspondingly.

Abstract:A novel method of Er-doped optical fiber(EDF) dual-wavelength Raman hybrid amplification for fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor system based on swept laser is proposed for achieving ultra-long distance quasi-distributed measurement.Such a method employs a high power swept laser as the light source.Dual-wavelength Raman fiber amplification is adopted to achieve low-noise bidirectional amplification of FBG signals,and two sections of EDFs arranged along the fiber link remotely are used for generation of amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) light to illuminate remotely-located FBG sensors and also amplification of sensor signals with the residual Raman pump power,making the whole sensor system capable of obtaining reasonably good signal-noise-ratio(SNR) for an ultra-long distance.The experimental results show that an optical SNR of ～7 dB has been achieved for a 100 km transmission distance with a swept laser,a low Raman pump power of ～170 mW at wavelength of 1455 nm and a Raman pump power of ～2 W at wavelength of 1480 nm,which leads to realization of FBG-based sensing along ultra-long distance.

Abstract:A novel tunable fiber ring laser configuration with a combination of bidirectional Raman amplification and dual erbium-doped fiber (EDF) amplification is proposed for realizing high optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), long-distance, quasi-distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing systems with large capacities and low cost. The hybrid Raman-EDF amplification configuration arranged in the ring laser can enhance the optical SNR of FBG sensor signals significantly owing to the good combination of the high gain of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and the low noise of the Raman amplification. Such a sensing system can support a large number of FBG sensors because of the use of a tunable fiber Fabry-Perot filter located within the ring laser and spatial division multiplexing for expansion of sensor channels. Experimental results show that an excellent optical SNR of similar to 60 dB has been achieved for a 50 km transmission distance with a low Raman pump power of similar to 170 mW at a wavelength of 1455 nm and a low EDFA pump power of similar to 40 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm, which is the highest optical SNR achieved so far for a 50 km long FBG sensor system, to our knowledge. Abstract:A novel interrogation method for optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors has been proposed by converting the change of the FBG wavelength into the phase difference between two radio frequency (RF) signals. As a result, the beating-induced RF signal power changes with the FBG wavelength shift. This technique could be used for high speed FBG interrogation and, due to the use of a second FBG to produce the reference RF signal, temperature cross-sensitivity effect is compensated automatically. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration have been carried out. Performances of the FBG sensor interrogation scheme have been studied.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as one of the most popular optical fiber sensing elements has the advantages of excellent networking ability, high measurement accuracy, good operation stability, insensitivity to electromagnetic interference, etc. It has been widely used in safety monitoring of civil buildings, dams, electric power systems and nondestructive testing of structures. However, the sensing distance is still limited to meet the requirements of practical applications, especially for safety monitoring of overhead power transmission lines in smart grids. In addition, the environmental noise and device noise during operation can reduce the demodulation accuracy considerably of the FBG sensing systems. Hence, spectrum denoising is necessary. In this paper, a large-scale, long-range, high accuracy FBG sensing system with combination of high-order random amplification, remote optical pumping amplification and deep-learning spectrum denoising as well as time division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing is proposed. The sensing range can reach 150 km with 308 FBG sensors of 4 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). The strain and temperature sensitivity of the system is 1.1 pm/με and 11.5 pm/°C, respectively. Furthermore, with the proposed deep-learning spectrum denoising model based on Deep Residual Shrinkage Networks, the mean OSNR at 150 km is enhanced to 7.1 dB. Such an advanced FBG sensing system is anticipated to be used for practical electrical powerline monitoring and other long-distance sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel low-reflectivity Fiber Bragg Grating sensor system with a combination of time division multiplexing mode,a narrow wavelength swept laser is proposed and demonstrated for achieving multiple sensing points,long-distance,quasi-distributed measurement.Time division multiplexing mode and the low reflectivity Fiber Bragg Gratings which have the close center wavelength are used to monitor multiple points simultaneously.And,Er-doped fiber and Raman amplification method is proposed to extend the sensing distance.The middle of the system involves a Raman pump for amplifying FBG reflected signal,and the Erbium-doped fiber uses the remaining Raman pump power to generate amplification of spontaneous emission and amplify sensing signal.Experimental results show that an excellent optical SNR of 15 dB has been achieved for 200 km transmission distance.In the static strain and temperature experiments at the distance of 200 km,the linearities achieve more than 0.999.
A New Designed FBG and Φ-OTDR Hybrid System for Vibration and Temperature Sensing

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a distributed vibration and temperature sensing system based on the hybrid of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). An interrogation technique has been proposed by treating the low reflectivity Gaussian-shaped FBGs pair as an edge filter that linearly translates the wavelength shift into reflection intensity variation. Closely spaced identical low reflectivity Gaussian-shaped FBGs was embedded into the sensing fiber, so that the same narrow line-width laser used in Φ-OTDR could be employed to pump the FGBs. The experimental results have shown that this designed hybrid sensing system could realize fully distributed vibration sensing along a 20.4km long fiber with 10m spatial resolution, and the perturbation events of 81 Hz can be obviously distinguished with a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 7.5dB. And multipoint temperature sensing could be obtained at the same time with a resolution superior to 0.12°C.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel integration of bidirectional free-space optics (FSO) and fiber-based fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) sensor structure for a long-distance sensing signal transmission system. The proposed FSO transmission technique is crucial to address concerns of topographical limitations that make fiber cable installation complex. According to experiments, as compared the proposed bidirectional scheme with a unidirectional FSO transmission channel achieved higher output power and clear reflected spectra of FBGS after 50 kilometers of SMF signal transmission. Besides, a combination of the neural network (NN) profile, recurrent generative adversarial network (R-GAN), and gated recurrent units (GRU) methods are proposed to address the overlap spectra problem and enhance peak wavelength detection accuracy in the FBG sensor system. The two NN profile and R-GAN methods are used to collect large amounts of strain sensor data, while the GRU method is used for peak wavelength detection in the FBG sensor system. The results demonstrated that the proposed two steps of the NN and R-GAN method are capable to generate a significant amount of realistic spectral training sets to improve the performance of the GRU deep learning model. Moreover, the results indicate that the well-trained GRU model using datasets generated by the NN and R-GAN method achieves superior performance than other previously reported machine learning techniques.

Abstract:In the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) domain, simultaneous measurement of vibration and temperature/strain based on Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in fiber could have wide applications. However, there are certain challenges for the case of ultra-long sensing range, including the interplay of different scattering mechanisms, the interaction of two types of sensing signals, and the competition of pump power. In this paper, a hybrid DOFS system, which can simultaneously measure temperature/strain and vibration over 150 km, is elaborately designed via integrating the Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Ф-OTDR). Distributed Raman and Brillouin amplifications, frequency division multiplexing (FDM), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and time division multiplexing (TDM) are delicately fused to accommodate ultra-long-distance BOTDA and Ф-OTDR. Consequently, the sensing range of the hybrid system is 150.62 km, and the spatial resolution of BOTDA and Ф-OTDR are 9 m and 30 m, respectively. The measurement uncertainty of the BOTDA is ± 0.82 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such hybrid DOFS is realized with a hundred-kilometer length scale.
