Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:Distributed fiber sensing (DFS) can provide real-time signals and warnings. The entire length of fiber optic cable can act as a sensing element, but the accuracy is sometimes limited. On the other hand, point-to-point fiber sensing (PPFS) is usually implemented using one or more fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) at specific positions along with the fiber for the monitoring of specific parameters (temperature, strain, pressure, and so on). However, the cost becomes expensive when the number of FBGs increases. A hybrid fiber sensing scheme is thus proposed, combining the advantages of DFS and PPFS. It is based on a Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) fiber system with additional FBGs embedded at certain positions where it is necessary to detect specific parameters. The hybrid fiber sensing system has the advantages of full sensing coverage at essential locations that need to be carefully monitored. In our work, the test results showed that the proposed system could achieve a sensing distance of 16 km with the single-mode fiber with a 2 m spatial resolution. For FBG parameter measurements, the temperature variation was 52 °C, from 25 °C to 77 °C, with a temperature sensitivity of 23 pm/°C, and the strain was from 0 to 400 με, with a strain sensitivity of 0.975 pm/με, respectively, using two FBGs.

Abstract:In the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) domain, simultaneous measurement of vibration and temperature/strain based on Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in fiber could have wide applications. However, there are certain challenges for the case of ultra-long sensing range, including the interplay of different scattering mechanisms, the interaction of two types of sensing signals, and the competition of pump power. In this paper, a hybrid DOFS system, which can simultaneously measure temperature/strain and vibration over 150 km, is elaborately designed via integrating the Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Ф-OTDR). Distributed Raman and Brillouin amplifications, frequency division multiplexing (FDM), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and time division multiplexing (TDM) are delicately fused to accommodate ultra-long-distance BOTDA and Ф-OTDR. Consequently, the sensing range of the hybrid system is 150.62 km, and the spatial resolution of BOTDA and Ф-OTDR are 9 m and 30 m, respectively. The measurement uncertainty of the BOTDA is ± 0.82 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such hybrid DOFS is realized with a hundred-kilometer length scale.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel integration of bidirectional free-space optics (FSO) and fiber-based fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) sensor structure for a long-distance sensing signal transmission system. The proposed FSO transmission technique is crucial to address concerns of topographical limitations that make fiber cable installation complex. According to experiments, as compared the proposed bidirectional scheme with a unidirectional FSO transmission channel achieved higher output power and clear reflected spectra of FBGS after 50 kilometers of SMF signal transmission. Besides, a combination of the neural network (NN) profile, recurrent generative adversarial network (R-GAN), and gated recurrent units (GRU) methods are proposed to address the overlap spectra problem and enhance peak wavelength detection accuracy in the FBG sensor system. The two NN profile and R-GAN methods are used to collect large amounts of strain sensor data, while the GRU method is used for peak wavelength detection in the FBG sensor system. The results demonstrated that the proposed two steps of the NN and R-GAN method are capable to generate a significant amount of realistic spectral training sets to improve the performance of the GRU deep learning model. Moreover, the results indicate that the well-trained GRU model using datasets generated by the NN and R-GAN method achieves superior performance than other previously reported machine learning techniques.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a distributed vibration and temperature sensing system based on the hybrid of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). An interrogation technique has been proposed by treating the low reflectivity Gaussian-shaped FBGs pair as an edge filter that linearly translates the wavelength shift into reflection intensity variation. Closely spaced identical low reflectivity Gaussian-shaped FBGs was embedded into the sensing fiber, so that the same narrow line-width laser used in Φ-OTDR could be employed to pump the FGBs. The experimental results have shown that this designed hybrid sensing system could realize fully distributed vibration sensing along a 20.4km long fiber with 10m spatial resolution, and the perturbation events of 81 Hz can be obviously distinguished with a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 7.5dB. And multipoint temperature sensing could be obtained at the same time with a resolution superior to 0.12°C.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme of bi-directional Brillouin time domain analyzer (BD-BOTDA) to extend the sensing range. By deploying two pump-probe pairs at two different wavelengths, the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) distribution over each half of the whole fiber can be obtained with the simultaneous detection of Brillouin signals in both channels. Compared to the conventional unidirectional BOTDA system of the same sensing range, the proposed BD-BOTDA scheme enables distributed sensing with a performance level comparable to the conventional one with half of the sensing range and a spatial resolution of 2 m, while maintaining the Brillouin signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the BFS uncertainty. Based on this technique, we have achieved distributed temperature sensing with a measurement range of 81.9 km fiber at a spatial resolution of 2 m and BFS uncertainty of ~0.44 MHz without introducing any complicated components or schemes.

Abstract:Blind source separation (BSS) is implemented for optical fiber sensing systems, such as the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system and the single-mode-multimode-single-mode fiber (SMS) sensing system. The FastICA, a kind of multichannel BSS algorithm, is used to get the strain and the temperature with two FBGs. For the SMS sensing, a single-channel blind source separation (SCBSS) algorithm is employed to simultaneously measure the vibration and the temperature variation with only one SMS sensor. The errors of both the FBG and the SMS optical fiber sensing system are very small with the BSS algorithm. The implementation of BSS for the optical fiber sensing makes the multiparameter measurements more easily with low cost and high accuracy and can also be applied for signal de-noising field.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) based on Raman, Brillouin, and Rayleigh scattering have recently attracted considerable attention for various sensing applications, especially large-scale monitoring, owing to their capacity for measuring strain or temperature distributions. However, ultraweak backscatter signals within optical fibers constitute an inevitable problem for DOFS, thereby increasing the burden on the entire system in terms of limited spatial resolution, low measurement speed, high system complexity, or high cost. We propose a novel resonance frequency mapping for a real-time quasi-distributed fiber optic sensor based on identical weak fiber Bragg gratings (FBG), which has stronger reflection signals and high sensitivity to multiple sensing parameters. The resonance configuration, which amplifies optical signals during multiple round-trip propagations, can simply and efficiently address the intrinsic problems in conventional single round-trip measurements for identical weak FBG sensors, such as crosstalk and optical power depletion. Moreover, it is technically feasible to perform individual measurements for a large number of quasi-distributed identical weak FBGs with relatively high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), low crosstalk, and low optical power depletion. By mapping the resonance frequency spectrum, the dynamic response of each identical weak FBG is rapidly acquired in the order of kilohertz, and direct interrogation in real time is possible without time-consuming computation, such as fast Fourier transformation (FFT). This resonance frequency spectrum is obtained on the basis of an all-fiber electro-optic configuration that allows simultaneous measurement of quasi-distributed strain responses with high speed (>5 kHz), high stability (~2.4 με), and high linearity (R2 = 0.9999).

Abstract:This paper introduces a new bidirectional integration approach that combines fiber sensor/free space optics (FSO) communication using an intensity and wavelength division multiplexer (IWDM) techniques-based long-distance fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor strain-sensing system. By implementing coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM), the system achieves the simultaneous transmission of optical communication and fiber optical sensor (FOS) sensing signals, resulting in a highly capable, flexible, and cost-effective solution. The proposed FSO transmission technique addresses complex fiber cable installation concerns with topographical limitations. This bidirectional structure ensures the reliability and stability of the long-distance FBG sensor system, supported by extensive research and experimentation. A hybrid stacked gated recurrent units and long short-term memory (SGRU-LSTM) model is proposed to enhance strain measurement accuracy by predicting and measuring the central wavelength of overlapped strain-sensing FBG sensor signals. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model in peak wavelength detection accuracy. The primary benefit of integrating communication and sensing is the significant reduction in construction costs by eliminating the requirement for two individual fiber optic systems, as the integration allows for a single system to fulfill both functions, resulting in more efficient and cost-effective implementation. Overall, this paper contributes to advancing long-distance FBG sensor systems by integrating fiber sensor/FSO communication and deep learning techniques, improving transmission distance, multiplexing capacity, measurement accuracy, system survivability, and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:A serial time-division multiplexing optical fiber sensing network with a large multiplexing capacity, which is based on identical ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and self-heterodyne detection technique, is proposed. An experimental system, which has 10 identical ultraweak FBGs with the same Bragg wavelength of 1550 nm, reflectivity of −36 dB, and bandwidth of 0.1 nm, is set up to investigate the performance of the proposed scheme. The spectra of 10 ultraweak FBGs are resolved with a high accuracy, and the wavelength–temperature sensitivity and temperature resolution of the system are 10.5 pm/°C, 0.09°C, respectively. A self-heterodyne detection technique is adopted to increase the sensitivity of the receiver, which makes it possible to multiplex over 1000 FBGs along a single optical fiber. Theoretical analyses demonstrate that this sensing scheme can effectively increase the multiplexing capacity and measurement accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, a long-distance coherent detection phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) scheme with bidirectional Raman and relay erbium-doped fiber hybrid amplification is proposed. The bidirectional Raman pump light acting on the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) can realize the passive amplification of pulsed signal light and Rayleigh backward scattering (RBS) light at the same time. The scheme utilizes bidirectional 1455 nm pumps as the pump source of relay amplification to achieve a longer sensing distance. Experimental results demonstrate that, an ultra-long Φ-OTDR system with 190 km sensing distance and 22 m spatial resolution is realized. Multi-point vibration signals are located and restored at 69.67 km, 120.13 km and 190.79 km, respectively. The average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of positioning curve is 10.32 dB, the average SNR of demodulated phase signal is 26.02 dB, and the frequency response range is from 5 Hz to 150 Hz. Furthermore, the sensing system has good linear characteristics of phase demodulation with a correlation coefficient of 0.997. The actual disturbance events are also detected at the far-end of sensing fiber. To the best of our knowledge, this system achieves the longest-distance Φ-OTDR without relay power supply. This passive hybrid amplification method can avoid the intermediate power supply along sensing fiber, which provides a reference for long-distance vibration monitoring of Φ-OTDR system.

Abstract:We propose a fully distributed fusion system combining phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and OTDR for synchronous vibration and loss measurement by setting an ingenious frequency sweep rate ( FSR ) of the optical source. The relationships between FSR , probe pulse width and repeat period are given to balance the amplitude fluctuation of OTDR traces, the dead zone probability and the measurable frequency range of vibration events. In the experiment, we achieve synchronous vibration and loss measurement with FSR of 40 MHz/s, the proble pulse width of 100 ns and repeat rate of 0.4 ms. The fluctuation of OTDR trace is less than 0.45 dB when the signal-to-noise ratio ( SNR ) is over 12 dB for a captured vibration event located at 9.1 km. The proposed method can be used for not only detection but also early warning of damage events in optical communication networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-fiber ring laser (FRL) for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) dynamic strain sensing system with an adaptive demodulator based on two-wave mixing (TWM) photorefractive interferometry. Any strain in the FBG is encoded as a wavelength shift of the light reflected by the FBG. The wavelength modulation is perfectly converted to intensity modulation by splitting the light into signal and pump beams and interfering the beams in an photorefractive InP:Fe crystal. The classical beam-combiner was replaced by a dynamic hologram continuously recorded in the InP:Fe crystal. The results demonstrate that TWM interferometer has the characteristics of adaptability and multiplexing. To investigate multiplexability, a three-channel SOA-fiber ring laser sensor system is presented to detect dynamic strain signals from three FBG sensors simultaneously. Experimental results prove that true multiplexing of several FBG dynamic strain sensors with a single adaptive source is feasible. This technique is expected to be suitable for the monitoring of external impact as well as acoustic emission in structures.

Abstract:We proposed a distributed optic fiber vibration sensing system that can realize a sensing distance of more than 160 km without a repeater. The system's optical structure is based on the Mach-Zehnder and Sagnac hybrid interference technique. To increase the monitoring distance, we used a reflective erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) instead of a traditional reflector at the end of the sensing system. In addition, a phase-generated carrier was applied to eliminate the parasitic interferometric effects of Rayleigh scattering.
Phase sensitive distributed vibration sensing using double-pulse for ultra-weak FBG array

Abstract:A distributed vibration sensing technique using double optical pulse based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and ultra-weak FBG (UWFBG) array is proposed for the first time. The single mode sensing fiber is integrated with UWFBG array which has uniform spatial interval and ultra-weak reflectivity. The relatively high reflectivity of the UWFBG, compared with the Rayleigh backscattering(RBS), gains a high SNR for the signal, which can make the system achieve the maximum detectable frequency limited by the round trip time of the probe pulse in fiber. A corresponding experimental Φ-OTDR system with a 4.5 km sensing fiber integrated with UWFBG array was setup for the evaluation of the system performance. Distributed vibration sensing is successfully realized with spatial resolution of 50 m. The sensing range of the vibration frequency can cover from 3 Hz to 9 kHz.
A Simple Fiber Bragg Grating-Based Sensor Network Architecture with Self-Protecting and Monitoring Functions

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based passive sensor architecture, which can be used to protect the fiber cut and monitor the multiple sensors simultaneously, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Here, we employ a wavelength-tunable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser scheme with 25 km cavity length acting as the detecting light source in central office (CO). Each FBG sensor, serving as a feedback element, is used in proposed sensor architecture. By tuning the tunable bandpass filter (TBF) placing inside cavity to match the corresponding Bragg wavelength of FBG over the amplification bandwidth, we can retrieve the related wavelength lasing for the FBG sensing and monitoring simultaneously. Moreover, the survivability and capacity of the passive FBG sensor architecture can be also enhanced.

Abstract:Abstract Four-wave mixing optical frequency comb fibre-based setups (FWM-OFCs) have the potential to improve the combined dense wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (DWDM-PON) and fibre Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors network providing easier application, broader technological opportunities for network development, and energy efficiency by substituting a power-demanding laser array. In this research, OFCs are generated for the purpose of combined network application of DWDM-PON and FBG optical sensors. The paper also investigates compatibility scenarios with OFCs in such systems. The mathematical simulation model has been developed and the performance of FWM-OFC based 8-channel 50 GHz spaced non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulated DWDM-PON transmission system, operating at 50 km single-mode fibre (SMF) with a bit rate of at least 10 Gbps embedded with 7 FBG optical temperature sensors, has been studied. As it is shown, FWM application results in OFC source that has fluctuations of the individual comb tones of less than 3 dB in power, and with an extinction ratio of about 33 dB for operation range of 192.9–193.25 THz, acting as a unified light source for all the data transmission channels. Embedded FBG optical sensors network causes negligible 0.3 dB power penalty.

Abstract:We report a distributed multifunctional fiber sensing network based on weak-fiber Bragg gratings (WFBGs) and long period fiber grating (LPG) assisted OTDR system. The WFBGs are applied for temperature, strain, and vibration monitoring at key position, and the LPG is used as a linear filter in the system to convert the wavelength shift of WFBGs caused by environmental change into the power change. The simulation results show that it is possible to integrate more than 4472 WFBGs in the system when the reflectivity of WFBGs is less than 10(-5). Besides, the back-Rayleigh scattering along the whole fiber can also be detected which makes distributed bend sensing possible. As an experimental demonstration, we have used three WFBGs UV-inscribed with 50-m interval at the end of a 2.6-km long fiber, which part was subjected for temperature, strain, and vibration sensing, respectively. The ratio of the intensity of output and input light is used for temperature and strain sensing, and the results show strain and temperature sensitivities are 4.2 x 10(-4)/mu epsilon and 5.9 x 10(-3)/degrees C, respectively.
