Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.

Abstract:The multi-parameter sensing is in great demand for comprehensive recognition in various application scenarios. We demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) for simultaneous vibration and temperature/strain sensing based on the integration of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). A double heterodyne detection configuration is set up to receive the Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering simultaneously, which can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce the polarization fading noise for the Brillouin signal at the same time. Most components in the setup are multiplexed for the Brillouin and Rayleigh signals. The overall cost is much lower than the summation of the BOTDR and the Φ-OTDR setup. In experiments, the setup is capable of measuring temperature change near the end of the 49.9 km long fiber with 0.381 MHz measurement uncertainty and restore different vibration patterns correctly by demodulating the phase variation of Rayleigh scattering signal, owning a 20 m spatial resolution. The sampling rate of the vibration measurement is 1.8 kHz, and the achieved dynamic strain resolution is 1.235 nɛ/√Hz with 100 Hz vibration.
190km Φ-OTDR with bidirectional Raman and relay erbium-doped fiber hybrid amplification

Abstract:In this paper, a long-distance coherent detection phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) scheme with bidirectional Raman and relay erbium-doped fiber hybrid amplification is proposed. The bidirectional Raman pump light acting on the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) can realize the passive amplification of pulsed signal light and Rayleigh backward scattering (RBS) light at the same time. The scheme utilizes bidirectional 1455 nm pumps as the pump source of relay amplification to achieve a longer sensing distance. Experimental results demonstrate that, an ultra-long Φ-OTDR system with 190 km sensing distance and 22 m spatial resolution is realized. Multi-point vibration signals are located and restored at 69.67 km, 120.13 km and 190.79 km, respectively. The average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of positioning curve is 10.32 dB, the average SNR of demodulated phase signal is 26.02 dB, and the frequency response range is from 5 Hz to 150 Hz. Furthermore, the sensing system has good linear characteristics of phase demodulation with a correlation coefficient of 0.997. The actual disturbance events are also detected at the far-end of sensing fiber. To the best of our knowledge, this system achieves the longest-distance Φ-OTDR without relay power supply. This passive hybrid amplification method can avoid the intermediate power supply along sensing fiber, which provides a reference for long-distance vibration monitoring of Φ-OTDR system.

Abstract:Distributed fiber sensing (DFS) can provide real-time signals and warnings. The entire length of fiber optic cable can act as a sensing element, but the accuracy is sometimes limited. On the other hand, point-to-point fiber sensing (PPFS) is usually implemented using one or more fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) at specific positions along with the fiber for the monitoring of specific parameters (temperature, strain, pressure, and so on). However, the cost becomes expensive when the number of FBGs increases. A hybrid fiber sensing scheme is thus proposed, combining the advantages of DFS and PPFS. It is based on a Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) fiber system with additional FBGs embedded at certain positions where it is necessary to detect specific parameters. The hybrid fiber sensing system has the advantages of full sensing coverage at essential locations that need to be carefully monitored. In our work, the test results showed that the proposed system could achieve a sensing distance of 16 km with the single-mode fiber with a 2 m spatial resolution. For FBG parameter measurements, the temperature variation was 52 °C, from 25 °C to 77 °C, with a temperature sensitivity of 23 pm/°C, and the strain was from 0 to 400 με, with a strain sensitivity of 0.975 pm/με, respectively, using two FBGs.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme of bi-directional Brillouin time domain analyzer (BD-BOTDA) to extend the sensing range. By deploying two pump-probe pairs at two different wavelengths, the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) distribution over each half of the whole fiber can be obtained with the simultaneous detection of Brillouin signals in both channels. Compared to the conventional unidirectional BOTDA system of the same sensing range, the proposed BD-BOTDA scheme enables distributed sensing with a performance level comparable to the conventional one with half of the sensing range and a spatial resolution of 2 m, while maintaining the Brillouin signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the BFS uncertainty. Based on this technique, we have achieved distributed temperature sensing with a measurement range of 81.9 km fiber at a spatial resolution of 2 m and BFS uncertainty of ~0.44 MHz without introducing any complicated components or schemes.
300km Ultra-long Fiber Optic DAS System Based on Optimally Designed Bidirectional EDFA Relay

Abstract:Optical fiber distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) is in great demand in many long-distance application fields, such as railway and pipeline safety monitoring. However, the DAS measurement distance is limited by the transmission loss of optical fiber and ultralow backscattering power. In this paper, a DAS system based on multispan relay amplification is proposed, where the bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is designed as a relay module to amplify both the probe light and the backscattering light. In the theoretical noise model, the parameters of our system are carefully analyzed and optimized for a longer sensing distance, including the extinction ratio (ER), span number, span length, and gain of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. The numerical simulation shows that a bidirectional EDFA relay DAS system can detect signals over 2500 km, as long as the span number is set to be more than 100. To verify the effectiveness of the scheme, a six-span coherent-detection-based DAS system with an optimal design was established, where the cascaded acoustic-optic modulators (AOMs) were used for a high ER of 104 dB. The results demonstrate that the signal at the far end of 300.2 km can be detected and recovered, achieving a high signal-to-noise ratio of 59.6 dB and a high strain resolution of 51.8pε/ Hz at 50 Hz with a 20 m spatial resolution. This is, to the best of our knowledge, a superior DAS sensing distance with such a high strain resolution.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a distributed optical fibre sensor (DOFS) based on the hybrid of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and Raman optical time domain reflectometry (ROTDR), which could reconstruct the acoustic and temperature fields all along the sensing fibre at the same time. The Rayleigh back scattering (RBS), Raman Stokes (RS) and Raman anti-Stokes (RAS) generated by the probe pulse were separated by a WDM filter. Then the RBS was received by a heterodyne balanced photo detector (BPD) for quantitative vibration measurement and the dynamic acoustic field reconstruction, while the RS and RAS components were received directly by avalanche photodiodes (APDs) for temperature demodulation. The experimental results have shown that the proposed hybrid system could measure the temperature profile along a 12km long standard single-mode fibre with a maximal temperature uncertainty of 0.95°C; and a linearity response of R2=0.9986, along with a periodical knocking event detected simultaneously. Meanwhile, a 100 Hz sinusoidal vibration at 12 km distance along the same fibre could be clearly identified. Distributed knocking vibration and temperature was achieved at the same time with high accuracy.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/<i>H</i> <i>z</i>. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

Abstract:A novel hybrid BOTDR and Φ-OTDR system for simultaneous static and dynamic measurements is proposed. Employing the division of both backscattering light and local light, a double coherent detection configuration is achieved to extend the sensing range and demodulate the phase quantitively. With the independent detection of Brillouin scattering light and Rayleigh scattering light, the demodulation error in BOTDR is avoided while the signal-to-noise ratio of Φ-OTDR is enhanced. Experiment for simultaneously measuring temperature and vibration is carried out, which proves the sensing range of the hybrid system is 49.5km with 20m spatial resolution. The measurement uncertainty of BOTDR is verified to be 2.821MHz, and the maximum frequency response range of Φ-OTDR is 900Hz. Experimental results indicate the proposed system is specialized in dealing with both static and dynamic situations simultaneously.

Abstract:In this study, a long-distance optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with high spatial resolution based on time division multiplexing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Distributed strain sensing with high spatial resolution over long sensing range can be realized by reconfiguring the system layout in a time-division-multiplexed manner by re-routing the measurement signals for segmented processing with extra circulators and couplers only, rather than any other mechanisms for performance improvement of laser source or algorithms for nonlinear errors compensation. Through time-division-multiplexed reconfiguration, the sensing distance is no longer restricted by the path difference of the auxiliary interferometer which is commonly employed in OFDR systems for compensating laser frequency tuning nonlinearity. Compared with the traditional system layout, the proposed system allows distributed measurement with flexible spatial resolutions in each sub-sensing unit without any crosstalk among them. In experiments, distributed strain sensing with spatial resolution up to 5mm is achieved over an active sensing distance of 225m by the proposed system. Furthermore, the spatial resolution flexibility of the proposed system is further verified by successfully obtaining the strain information with 2 mm spatial resolution at the end of a 235-m-long fiber.

Abstract:Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensor is suitable for measuring the static temperature/strain, but Mach-Zenhder interferometer distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) can be used to measure the dynamic strain. Many practical applications need static and dynamic sensing information, which is beyond the capability of the single mechanism distributed optical fiber sensor. Considering optical-fiber sensors of Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) and optical-fiber sensors of Mach-Zenhder interferometer are both using the loop sensing fiber structures, BOTDA and Mach-Zenhder interference are combined together by sharing with the same sensing optical fiber, light source, and other optical devices. BOTDA is used to measure temperature, and Mach-Zenhder interferometer is applied to measure vibration. So, the sensor with multi-mechanism and multi-parameter can be achieved. A preliminary 25 km sensing experiment system is built for testing. For Mach-Zenhder's vibration sensing, spatial accuracy can reach to 60 m, and the vibration frequency is able to be obtained. For BOTDA's temperature testing, the beginning and end's measurement accuracy are 2°C without vibration in existence, and the accuracy becomes 3°C and 4°C respectively with vibration.

Abstract:The integration of Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering in a hybrid sensor system has revolutionized the field of distributed fiber optic sensing. This hybrid sensor system provides a strong and all-encompassing solution for monitoring multiple physical parameters, including strain, temperature, and vibrations along the sensing fiber length by combining the strengths of both scattering phenomena. We present a hybrid multi-parameter distributed sensing system in this paper that is based on the Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering mechanisms. Utilizing a single-end access to the sensing fiber, we measured acoustic vibrations based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), whereas we employed a Brillouin optical time reflectometry (BOTDR) for strain and temperature monitoring. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid sensor system to achieve simultaneous and independent measurements over a 25 km long single-mode silica fiber at 3 m spatial resolution. Furthermore, we used a large effective area fiber (LEAF) for simultaneous and discriminative strain, temperature, and vibration monitoring in order to get around the cross-sensitivity between the strain and temperature in the BOTDR system. A variety of applications, such as the structural health monitoring of buildings, bridges, and oil and gas pipelines, industrial process control, security, and surveillance, can be served by the suggested multi-parameter hybrid distributed sensor system.

Abstract:We proposed a distributed optic fiber vibration sensing system that can realize a sensing distance of more than 160 km without a repeater. The system's optical structure is based on the Mach-Zehnder and Sagnac hybrid interference technique. To increase the monitoring distance, we used a reflective erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) instead of a traditional reflector at the end of the sensing system. In addition, a phase-generated carrier was applied to eliminate the parasitic interferometric effects of Rayleigh scattering.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid distributed fiber sensing system for multi-parameter detection. The integration of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry ({\Phi}-OTDR) and Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (B-OTDR) enables measurement of vibration, temperature and strain. Exploiting the fast changing property of vibration and the static property of temperature and strain, the laser pulse width and intensity are modulated and then injected into the single-mode sensing fiber proportionally, so that the three concerned parameters can be extracted simultaneously by only one photo-detector and data acquisition channel. Combining with advanced data processing methods, the modulation of laser pulse brings additional advantages because of trade and balance between the backscattering light power and nonlinear effect noise, which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio, and enables sub-meter level spatial resolution together with long sensing distance. The proposed method realizes up to 4.8 kHz vibration sensing with 3 m spatial resolution at 10 km standard single-mode fiber. And measurements of the distributed temperature and stress profile along the same fiber with 80 cm spatial resolution are also achieved concurrently.

Abstract:A distributed vibration-sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and distributed feedback interferometer (DFI) with broadband frequency response and high spatial resolution has been proposed and demonstrated. A couple of narrow line-width lasers with different wavelengths were used to form the light source, which were consistent with two channels of dense wavelength division multiplexer. Both functions of Φ-OTDR and DFI could work synchronously without influence between each other. The characteristic of broadband frequency disturbance event could be fully captured and identified by the DFI, while the corresponding location could be determined by the Φ-OTDR scheme. Unlike ordinary interferometer, the proposed DFI scheme could make single-end monitoring without the installation of extra accessories. Furthermore, broadband frequency response range and precise locating of the disturbance event could be achieved at the same time. Experimental results have shown that spatial resolution of 10 m and frequency response up to 1 MHz have been obtained over 2.16-km-sensing fiber, which have proved the validity of the proposed method.
A Hybrid Single-End-Access BOTDA and COTDR Sensing System Using Heterodyne Detection

Abstract:A hybrid single-end-access BOTDA and COTDR sensing system is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. In our configuration, the heterodyne detection techniques are applied to improve the SNR of the single-end-access BOTDA. Without adding extra instruments, our system could easily switch between BOTDA and COTDR modes by changing the intermediate frequency of the detected heterodyne signals. We performed the distributed temperature measurement when the sensor works as BOTDA, and a 24 km sensing range with 5m resolution together with a temperature uncertainty of 1.0°C are achieved. When it operates as COTDR, a peak dynamic range of 12 dB is obtained by using 50 ns probe pulse and the loss coefficient of fiber under test (FUT) is accurately measured. The hybrid system not only offers an excellent solution for the requisite of two-end-access in conventional BOTDA and obtains a longer measurement range than that of the existed one-end BOTDA, but also can be used to measure the attenuation of a fiber link or locate the discrete defects on optical fiber systems.

Abstract:Phase sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array measures the dynamic strain by extracting the phase of the reflective signals. However, the performance is challenged by the trade-off between spatial resolution and sensing distance. In this paper, we propose a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) Φ-OTDR based on a cross-arranged dual-wavelength UWFBG array to overcome this limitation. By combining the vibration positioning results of two wavelengths, high resolution and long sensing distance can be achieved at the same time.
A New Designed FBG and Φ-OTDR Hybrid System for Vibration and Temperature Sensing

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a distributed vibration and temperature sensing system based on the hybrid of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). An interrogation technique has been proposed by treating the low reflectivity Gaussian-shaped FBGs pair as an edge filter that linearly translates the wavelength shift into reflection intensity variation. Closely spaced identical low reflectivity Gaussian-shaped FBGs was embedded into the sensing fiber, so that the same narrow line-width laser used in Φ-OTDR could be employed to pump the FGBs. The experimental results have shown that this designed hybrid sensing system could realize fully distributed vibration sensing along a 20.4km long fiber with 10m spatial resolution, and the perturbation events of 81 Hz can be obviously distinguished with a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 7.5dB. And multipoint temperature sensing could be obtained at the same time with a resolution superior to 0.12°C.

Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.
