Abstract:A facile method for constructing superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings is presented. Pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are first noncovalently (wrapped) modified by an organic inorganic hybrid of an amphiphilic copolymer of styrene and malcic anhydride and silica with the existence of gamma-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (a silane coupling agent). The modified MWNTs were mixed with tetraethyl orthosilicate in ethanol, air sprayed, coated with a fluoroalkylsilane, and then heat treated to obtain the superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the coatings have a micrometer- and nanometer-scale hierarchical structure similar to that flows leaves; therefore, they show both high water contact angles (>160 degrees) and low sliding angles (<2 degrees). The coatings also exhibit good transmittance and greatly improved conductivities. This method is convenient, inexpensive, and easy to scale up. Moreover, it does not require any chemical modification of the MWNTs or use any harsh chemicals.

Abstract:Ultrathin hybrid films of graphene oxide (GO) and monolayer titania (TO) were assembled by layer-by-layer and drop-casting methods. The photo-induced wettability modulation of the hybrid films with different configurations was systematically studied. Due to the photocatalytic reduction of GO by TO, GO sheets in the hybrid films exhibited a tendency to undergo photoinduced conversion from hydrophilic to hydrophobic upon UV irradiation. On the contrary, TO nanosheets showed the reverse trend. Both surfaces of the hybrid film showed opposite yet tunable hydrophilicity under UV irradiation, demonstrating the potential for future application in liquid transport engineering.
Surface Wetting Processing on BNNT Films by Selective Plasma Modes

Abstract:The wettability of boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) films was modified using a combination of pulsed and continuous wave (CW) mode plasma. The combined mode effectively modified the wettability of BNNT films and kept the nanostructures intact. The BNNT films changed from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic after combined mode treatment at 600 W min. In contrast, the contact angle controllable decreased linearly in a controllable way with increasing energy input before eventually becoming superhydrophilic after 1000 W min of CW mode treatment. A high concentration of graft functional groups formed, along with point defects. More point defects formed when using combined modes and higher energy input. Mainly amine functional groups were grafted by combined mode plasma, while the CW mode plasma led to more formation of amide and imine on the BNNTs. Research into controllable wettability and selection of grafted functional groups should enable promising applications of BNNTs in composites and biology in the future.

Abstract:Hybrid thin films were prepared via a drop-coating method by using graphene prepared by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) and carbon nanotube dispersed in 1, 2-dichlorobenzene as crude materials. The structure and morphology of hybrid thin films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that surface density of carbon nanotube in the hybrid thin films increased linearly with the increase of dispersion concentration. Furthermore, the transmittance and sheet resistance of the hybrid thin films, which were characterized by UV-visible spectroscope and four-point probe analyzer, respectively, both significant decreased when concentration of the dispersed carbon nanotube increased. The two parameters, to be specific, were found to be 92.18% (at 550 nm) and 0.998 k Omega/square, respectively as the concentration of the dispersed carbon nanotube reaching 0.1 mg/mL. In other words, the performances of the hybrid thin films can be improved by regulating concentration of carbon nanotube in the dispersion, showing the films potential applications in the fields of transparent electrodes, field effect transistors and laser mode-locking.

Abstract:In recent times, the bonded graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hybrid (BGCH) film has garnered considerable attention due to its exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Its inherent hydrophobic characteristics render it promising for diverse applications such as seawater desalination and anti-icing strategies. However, the wettability, particularly the dynamics of water droplet impact on the film surface, remains unclear. In this study, employing molecular dynamics simulations, we constructed a model of the BGCH film and observed four distinct impact phenomena (ball bouncing, spreading, retraction, pancake bouncing) when water droplets struck BGCH with short CNTs. Notably, at a velocity of 12 & Aring;/ps, a pancake bouncing pattern emerged, markedly reducing the duration of solid-liquid contact. Moreover, the impact behaviors were found to be intricately linked to the structural parameters and inclined impact induced droplet flow on the substrate surface, augmenting the contact time. Furthermore, longer CNTs dissipated more energy from the water droplet through structural deformation. This work systematically investigates the nanodroplet bouncing behaviors of BGCH, providing theoretical insights for their applications in hydrophobicity fields.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been employed to study the wetting transitions of liquid gallium droplet on the graphene surfaces, which are decorated with three types of carbon nanopillars, and to explore the effect of the surface roughness and morphology on the wettability of liquid Ga. The simulation results showed that, at the beginning, the Ga film looks like an upside-down dish on the rough surface, different from that on the smooth graphene surface, and its size is crucial to the final state of liquid. Ga droplets exhibit a Cassie⁻Baxter (CB) state, a Wenzel state, a Mixed Wetting state, and a dewetting state on the patterned surfaces by changing distribution and the morphology of nanopillars. Top morphology of nanopillars has a direct impact on the wetting transition of liquid Ga. There are three transition states for the two types of carbon nanotube (CNT) substrates and two for the carbon nanocone (CNC) one. Furthermore, we have found that the substrates show high or low adhesion to the Ga droplet with the variation of their roughness and top morphology. With the roughness decreasing, the adhesion energy of the substrate decreases. With the same roughness, the CNC/graphene surface has the lowest adhesion energy, followed by CNT/graphene and capped CNT/graphene surfaces. Our findings provide not only valid support to previous works but also reveal new theories on the wetting model of the metal droplet on the rough substrates.

Abstract:The surface chemical properties and wettability of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized by CVD were studied by wicking kinetic measurements. The influence of the microstructure, preparation conditions and the surface modification of the CNFs on their wettability in different solvents were investigated. Results indicated that the preparation conditions such as catalyst composition, and especially the carbon source, have an obvious effect on the surface properties and wettability of CNFs. CNFs from Fe/gamma- Al2O3 and C2H4 has the worst wettability in water, while CNFDs from Ni/gamma- Al2O3 and CO has the best wettability in cyclohexane. Measurement of contact angle in cyclohexane, acetone, ethanol and water showed that interaction between the CNF surface and the solvent changed significantly with the solvent used. The contact angles of CNFs from Fe/gamma- Al2O3 and CO in water, acetone and ethanol relative to that in cyclohexane ( in which the contact angle is arbitrarily set to 0 degrees), are 81. 6 degrees,45. 2 degrees,24. 8 degrees respectively. It is believed that a small polarity of the CNF surface leads to its higher wettability in a non-polar solvent such as cyclohexane than in polar solvent such as water. The nature of the CNF surface groups and the wettability of CNFs in different solvents could be tailored by different surface modifications. Treatment in concentrated nitric acid increased the CNF wettability both in water and in cyclohexane, while treatment in hydrogen peroxide decreased the CNF wettability in both solvents. Interestingly, thermal treatment in argon increased the CNF wettability in water, but decreased it in cyclohexane.

Abstract:In this work, an effective strategy for nanostructured surface wetting based on the external electric field and the graphene coating is proposed in the context of classic molecular dynamics models. For water-resistant nanogrooves, the wetting transition from the Cassie-Baxter (CB) to the Wenzel (WZ) state is generated in the presence of the monolayer graphene coating under an external electric field of about 0.07 V/Å. Moreover, due to the funnel-like structure, the electrowetting of double-trapezoid nanogrooves can be enhanced relative to that of single-trapezoid nanogrooves. Besides, the calculated profiles of dipole moments and 1D free-energy landscapes exhibit a remarkable reduction in the free energy barrier required for the wetting transition assisted by the electric field and the graphene coating. This study provides atomistic insights into the wetting behavior of nanostructures under a variety of conditions, which is of great help to manufacture micro/nanostructured surfaces.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials play an essential role in a wide range of modern technologies due to their surface properties such as adsorption capacity and controllable wettability, which depend on the production methods. For practical applications, it is crucial to control the surface properties to achieve the desired wetting characteristics, which can be described with the contact angle (CA). Here, we experimentally investigate the wettability properties of the carbon nanowalls and show how to manage a wetting transition from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic states. A CA of 170° was reached with direct plasma synthesis, while an angle smaller than 20° was achieved during the atmosphere plasma modification. Combining the formation of the surface groups due to the plasma treatment results and the macroscale wetting behavior in terms of the Cassie–Baxter model, we qualitatively explain how the observed wetting enhancement is induced by both controlled chemical and geometrical surface-heterogeneity.

Abstract:Controlling of the wettability of micro-nano scale surfaces not only plays important roles in basic science but also presents some significant applications in interference shielding materials, microfluidics and phase-change heat transfer enhancement, etc. Here, the superhydrophobic super-aligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) films are firstly obtained by the chemical vapor deposition method and the annealing process. Then their wettabilities are in-situ switched by the electrowetting strategy. Specifically, the fascinating transformation of superhydrophobicity to the superhydrophilicity is achieved by exerting external DC voltages across the CNT-liquid interfaces, and the transitions of Cassie-to-Wenzel states are observed on the multilayer SACNT films. In addition, the electrowetting induced salt absorption of the porous SACNT is also reported here. Finally, the threshold voltages of the electrowetting behaviors for different liquids on the SACNT films and unit capacitances across the CNT-liquid interfaces are obtained, which reveal that the SACNT films have much more outstanding electrowetting properties than the previously reported works. Our approach reported here demonstrates that the wettability of SACNT films could be simply, effectively and in-situ controlled by the electrowetting method, which will have many profound implications in numerous applications such as phase-change heat transfer enhancement, optical lens with variable focal length and microfluidics, etc. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The various high aspect ratio micro/nano structures that are duplicated by the widely applicable micro/nanomolding process would require excellent wettability of the structured mold for full filling of the liquid-like materials into microcavities. Herein, by employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the influence of a monolayer graphene (MLG) on the wetting behaviors of grooved copper is thoroughly investigated, indicating that MLG is an effective approach in modulating the wettability of the structured copper surfaces. Moreover, the extracted outcomes signify that the coating with MLG reduces remarkably the required activation energy for the infiltration of water molecules into the copper groove, thereby triggering the wetting transition from the Cassie-Baxter (CB) to the Wenzel (WZ) state. In addition, by varying the coating locations and dimension of the MLG, it is unveiled that the sidewall coating of MLG plays a crucial role in reducing the free energy barrier needed to surmount the transition state. Interestingly, as the coating height of sidewall MLG increases, the energy barrier is reduced, and the grooved surface becomes more attractive to water molecular, attaining a stable WZ state by employing a height beyond the critical value of MLG coating of 12.4 A in our model. Our work provides useful insights into the tunable wettability of the grooved surfaces by nanocoating engineering, suggesting that MLG can be an effective coating solution in the fabrication of novel micro/nanostructures with high aspect ratios.

Abstract:SWCNT-reduced graphite oxide hybrid films were prepared by a filtration method. An efficient post-treatment procedure was designed to reduce GO and remove dispersants simultaneously. The sheet resistance decreased significantly after treatment, by a factor of 4-13 times. Films with excellent performance (95.6%, 655 Ω per square) were obtained and had great potential applications.

Abstract:Hybridization of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with graphene provides a promising means of integrating the attributes of both materials, thereby enabling widespread application. Here, we present a method to directly assemble hybrid CNT-graphene films by a blown bubble method combined with selective substrate annealing. We use polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as the polymeric matrix to blow bubbles containing self-assembled multi-walled CNT arrays, and then transform the bubble film into a CNT-graphene hybrid film by thermal annealing on a Cu substrate; PMMA serves as the carbon source for growing single to few-layer graphene among the CNT network until a continuously hybridized structure is formed. Compared to the bare (non-hybridized) CNT networks, the hybrid films exhibit improved electrical conductivity and structural integrity. Our method also enables the fabrication of a multi-walled CNT-Si solar cell, which has high power conversion efficiency, through the assembly of hybrid CNT-graphene structures.
Exploiting the Hierarchical Morphology of Single-Walled and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Films for Highly Hydrophobic Coatings

Abstract:Self-assembled hierarchical solid surfaces are very interesting for wetting phenomena, as observed in a variety of natural and artificial surfaces. Here, we report single-walled (SWCNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) thin films realized by a simple, rapid, reproducible, and inexpensive filtration process from an aqueous dispersion, that was deposited at room temperature by a dry-transfer printing method on glass. Furthermore, the investigation of carbon nanotube films through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the multi-scale hierarchical morphology of the self-assembled carbon nanotube random networks. Moreover, contact angle measurements show that hierarchical SWCNT/MWCNT composite surfaces exhibit a higher hydrophobicity (contact angles of up to 137°) than bare SWCNT (110°) and MWCNT (97°) coatings, thereby confirming the enhancement produced by the surface hierarchical morphology.

Abstract:Graphene films with high hydrophobic and adhesive performance were fabricated via chemical modification of graphite oxide and heat reduction processes. Irregularly stacked multilayer graphene nanosheets comprised the microstructure, whereas folding and agglomeration of graphene nanoflakes with few layers comprised the nanostructure. The resulting films showed remarkable superhydrophobic property with a static contact angle of 160.5°. Unlike many superhydrophobic materials, the obtained film is highly adhesive, allowing water drops as large as 50μL to be inverted. Meanwhile, the film can be absolutely wet by silicone oil. This highly hydrophobic, oleophilic and adhesive performance of the graphene films could be useful in the device and biomaterial application.

Abstract:Films of superhydrophobic multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been obtained by using alkyl-modified MWCNTs (MWCNT(COOC18H37)n) and a simple and effective preparation method. The films show both a high contact angle and a small sliding angle for water droplets. A particular characteristic is that on the superhydrophobic surface the alkyl-modified MWCNTs are not intentionally aligned, thus avoiding the preparation techniques using aligned carbon nanotubes to produce the same effect.
