Abstract:The thermodynamics of solid/liquid interfaces under nanoconfinement has tremendous implications for liquid transport properties. Here using molecular dynamics, we investigate graphite nanoslits and study how the water/graphite interfacial tension changes with the degree of confinement. We found that, for nanochannel heights between 0.7nm and 2.6nm, graphite becomes more hydrophobic than in bulk, and that the value of the surface tension oscillates before eventually converging towards a constant value for larger slits. The value of the surface tension is correlated with the slip length of the fluid and explained in terms of the effective and interfacial density, hydration pressure and friction coefficient. The study clearly indicates that there is a critical channel height of 0.9nm (achievable experimentally1) at which the surface tension reaches its highest value, but the water diffusion across the channel is at its minimum. The structural analysis shows that for this pore size a transition between a 2D and 3D hydrogen bond network is accompanied by an abrupt increase in conformational entropy. Our results show that the wettability of solid surfaces can change under nanoconfinement and the data can be used to interpret the experimental permeability data.

Abstract:The surface chemical properties and wettability of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized by CVD were studied by wicking kinetic measurements. The influence of the microstructure, preparation conditions and the surface modification of the CNFs on their wettability in different solvents were investigated. Results indicated that the preparation conditions such as catalyst composition, and especially the carbon source, have an obvious effect on the surface properties and wettability of CNFs. CNFs from Fe/gamma- Al2O3 and C2H4 has the worst wettability in water, while CNFDs from Ni/gamma- Al2O3 and CO has the best wettability in cyclohexane. Measurement of contact angle in cyclohexane, acetone, ethanol and water showed that interaction between the CNF surface and the solvent changed significantly with the solvent used. The contact angles of CNFs from Fe/gamma- Al2O3 and CO in water, acetone and ethanol relative to that in cyclohexane ( in which the contact angle is arbitrarily set to 0 degrees), are 81. 6 degrees,45. 2 degrees,24. 8 degrees respectively. It is believed that a small polarity of the CNF surface leads to its higher wettability in a non-polar solvent such as cyclohexane than in polar solvent such as water. The nature of the CNF surface groups and the wettability of CNFs in different solvents could be tailored by different surface modifications. Treatment in concentrated nitric acid increased the CNF wettability both in water and in cyclohexane, while treatment in hydrogen peroxide decreased the CNF wettability in both solvents. Interestingly, thermal treatment in argon increased the CNF wettability in water, but decreased it in cyclohexane.

Abstract:Graphene is a rapidly rising two-dimensional material and vast research efforts have been focused on its extraordinary mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties [1] . The wettability of graphene, which is an important property regarding to its application as surface engineering, has not been fully studied. Most previous studies are focused on flat graphene sheet which revealed that graphene is a weekly hydrophobic material with a water contact angle (WCA) measured within the range of 87°-127°. But actually, wrinkling is ubiquitous existing in two-dimensional graphene due to thermodynamically unstable status. The graphene films widely used in electronics, energy storage, composites and biomedicine are all crumpled [2] . Thus, it has great significance to understand the wetting behavior of water on wrinkled graphene, which may have potential applications in novel graphene based conductive coatings and electrodes that are superhydrophobic and tunable wettability. In this study, we characterize the wetting properties of graphene by performing classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS). Firstly, a model of a flat graphene with a nanodroplet above is established and the WCA of the flat graphene is obtained from the droplet density profiles using atom trajectories. Then, another two models are built as graphene under uniaxial or biaxial compression. A pattern of parallel ridges forms in plane of graphene by compressing in one direction and a more complex crumpling pattern with ridges and vertices is formed by biaxial compression. The values of WCA of these two types involving wrinkled graphene with different compression magnitude are calculated. In our simulation results, the WCA of flat graphene is about 95°, which is consistent with experiment result very well. As to the wrinkled graphene, WCA is larger than the flat one, which means that wrinkle could enhance the hydrophobic property. Furthermore, WCA increases with the increasing of compression. A relation between mechanical and wettability property has been obtained, which may support the development and application of graphene as coating materials.

Abstract:The dynamics of water near the nanoscale hydrophobic (graphite-CH3) and hydrophilic (graphite-COOH) plates has been studied in detail with molecular dynamics simulations in this paper. It is shown that these designed surfaces (by growing a layer of methyl or carboxyl groups on top of graphite) can have a significant impact on the neighboring water dynamics, with the hydrophilic carboxyl surface having even more profound effects. The water hydrogen bond lifetime is much longer near both types of surfaces than that in the bulk, while on the other hand the water diffusion constant is much smaller than that in the bulk. The difference in the diffusion constant can be as large as a factor of 8 and the difference in the hydrogen bond lifetime can be as large as a factor of 2, depending on the distance from the surface. Furthermore, the water molecules in the first solvation shell of surface atoms show a strong bias in hydroxyl group orientation near the surface, confirming some of the previous findings. Finally, the possible water dewetting transition between two graphite-CH3 plates and the effect of the strength of the solute-solvent attractions on the water drying transition are investigated. The relationship among the dewetting transition critical distance, van der Waals potential well depth, and water contact angle on the graphite-CH3 surface is also analyzed on the basis of a simple macroscopic theory, which can be used to predict the dewetting transition critical distance.

Abstract:The surface wettability effect on fluid transport in nanoscale slit pores is quantitatively accessed by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation incorporating with density functional theory (DFT). In particular, the slip lengths of benzene steady flows under various wetting conditions are computed with NEMD simulations and a quasi-general expression is given, while the structural properties are investigated with DFT. By taking into account the inhomogeneity of fluid density inside pore, we find that the conventional flux enhancement rate is associated with both the molecule slipping and geometrical confinement, and it becomes drastically high in solvophobic pores especially when the pore size is of several fluid diameters. In good agreement with experimental results, we further show that the wettability effect competes with pore size effect in determining the flux after pore inner surface modification, and a high flux can be achieved when the deposited layer is solvophobic yet thin. Abstract:In the present work, the wettability of defective graphene oxide (GO) film is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. A water droplet is deposited on the surface of a graphene oxide membrane, and the contact angle is measured by fitting the liquid-vapor interface. Although pristine graphene has few hydrophobic properties with a contact angle of 95 degrees, graphene oxide presents more hydrophilic properties, due to the stronger hydrogen bonds interactions at the interface. Moreover, the introduction of vacancy defects at the graphene oxide surface decreases the wettability of graphene oxide. We find that the contact angle of graphene oxide increases from 70 degrees to 82 degrees, with a defective concentration from 0% to 10%. Our results will help provide a new method for controlling the wetting properties of GO and its additional capabilities in device design for applications.

Abstract:We present the width dependent study of edge distribution of graphene nanoribbons unzipped from multi-wall nanotubes. The partial unzipping of the carbon nanotubes yields a mixture of carbon nanotubes and nanoribbons. Comparing atomic resolution images of scanning tunneling microscopy with the lattice of graphene, the edge structures of nanoribbons are identified. Below 10 nm, the edges are closer to armchair type. Above 20 nm, the ribbons prefer to have edges close to zigzag type. In between, a more random distribution of the edges is found. The findings are of potential usages for the edge control in graphene nanoribbon based applications.

Abstract:The efficiency of membrane separation processes relies on the performance of fluid flow across the membranes. Herein water transport across carbon nanotube membranes is investigated by means of non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Particularly the interior/exterior surface wetting effects on water flux are examined. We find that the hydrophilic interior and exterior surfaces can both suppress water flux, while the underlying mechanisms are different. Specifically, hydrophilic interior surface promotes the water density inside the nanopores, causing severe two-layer distributed structure, and meanwhile, the annulus layer near the surface becomes packed and ordered, greatly reducing the slipping length; while the hydrophilic exterior surface increases the entrance/exit resistance and suppresses the molecule diffusion near the interface, thus interfering the permeation of water molecules into the membrane. This study provides molecular insights for enhancing water permeation by surface modification of membranes.
Wetting Behavior of Surface Nanodroplets Regulated by Periodic Nanostructured Surfaces

Abstract:Surfaces with nanostructure patterning are broadly encountered in nature, and they play a significant role in regulating various phenomena such as phase transition at the liquid/solid interface. Here, we designed two kinds of template substrates with periodic nanostructure patterns [i.e., nanotrench (NT) and nanopore (NP)]. Surface nanodroplets produced on these nanostructure surfaces were characterized to acquire their morphology and wetting properties. We show that nanostructure patterning could effectively regulate the shape, contact radius, and nucleate site of nanodroplets. While nanodroplets on the NT structure are constrained in one dimension, nanodroplets on the NP structure have enhanced the wetting property with constraints from two dimensions. Further numerical analysis indicates that the morphology and contact angles of nanodroplets on the NT structure depend on the substrate wettability and the droplet volume. These observations demonstrate how physical geometry and chemical heterogeneity of a substrate surface affect the growth and spreading of surface nanodroplets, which deepens our understanding on nanoscale phase separation.

Abstract:Electrophoretic-deposited (EPD) graphene oxide (GO) on carbon fiber (CF) has been tried to improve the fiber/epoxy interfacial properties. However, the nano-level understanding on the mechanisms of surface wettability is still somewhat limited, which will be important to ensure the manufacturing ability of CF composites. In this work, the interfacial wetting behavior was systematically investigated via molecular dynamics simulations (MD). The results show significant improvement in interfacial properties by changing the morphology of GO-modified fiber surfaces. In details, appropriately increasing the deposition thickness, surface roughness, stacking angle and the distribution uniformity of GO sheets could enhance the wettability of the fiber surface, resulting in higher cohesive strength. The variation of bond stretching energy was the main factor that induced the change of the potential energy of the epoxy system during wetting simulations. Moreover, two obvious peaks of angular bending energy were observed at the solid–liquid and liquid–vapor surface, which may provide further insights into the formation mechanism of interfacial tensions.

Abstract:In this paper, a hydroxylated graphite surface is generated as a hydrophilic oleophobic material for the application of oil-water separation, and the effects of hydroxyl density on the three-phase wettability are studied in oil-water-graphite systems. We analyze the adsorption of water molecules on the hydroxylated surfaces and obtain the relationship between water-oil-solid interfacial properties and the hydroxyl density, which results from the synthetic effects of the orientation of molecules and hydrogen bonds. With the increase of hydroxyl density, the water-solid contact angle first decreases rapidly, and then remains constant. The density of the hydrogen bond formed between hydroxyls and water molecules in the adsorption layer can explain the regularity of the three-phase wettability. The orientation of the water molecules in the adsorption layer shows insignificant variation, owing to the hydrogen bond network formed between the water molecules; thus, little change is observed in the hydrogen bond density in the adsorption layer.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been employed to study the wetting transitions of liquid gallium droplet on the graphene surfaces, which are decorated with three types of carbon nanopillars, and to explore the effect of the surface roughness and morphology on the wettability of liquid Ga. The simulation results showed that, at the beginning, the Ga film looks like an upside-down dish on the rough surface, different from that on the smooth graphene surface, and its size is crucial to the final state of liquid. Ga droplets exhibit a Cassie⁻Baxter (CB) state, a Wenzel state, a Mixed Wetting state, and a dewetting state on the patterned surfaces by changing distribution and the morphology of nanopillars. Top morphology of nanopillars has a direct impact on the wetting transition of liquid Ga. There are three transition states for the two types of carbon nanotube (CNT) substrates and two for the carbon nanocone (CNC) one. Furthermore, we have found that the substrates show high or low adhesion to the Ga droplet with the variation of their roughness and top morphology. With the roughness decreasing, the adhesion energy of the substrate decreases. With the same roughness, the CNC/graphene surface has the lowest adhesion energy, followed by CNT/graphene and capped CNT/graphene surfaces. Our findings provide not only valid support to previous works but also reveal new theories on the wetting model of the metal droplet on the rough substrates.

Abstract:The molecular dynamics simulation method was applied to investigate the wettability of argon nano-droplets on platinum and other model solids. The contact angle and spreading characteristics of flat and triangle-array nano-structure surfaces were obtained. For the hydrophilic fluid-solid interaction, the homogeneous wetting took place between the droplet and the nano-structure surface, while the apparent contact angle was little affected due to the hysteresis. For the hydrophobic interaction, vapor-like phase appeared inside the nano-structure diastemata, and the wetting between the droplet and the nano-structure surface turned to be heterogeneous. Within the simulation scales, the contact angle increased with increasing the nano-structure size, and might even show surperhydrophobicity.
Wetting Transparency of Supported Graphene is Regulated by Polarities of Liquids and Substrates

Abstract:Graphene has to be supported on a substrate in a variety of applications. The underlying substrate can exert a remarkable impact on the wettability of graphene, but the inherent mechanism remains elusive. By quantifying the static contact angles of water (polar liquid) and diiodomethane (nonpolar liquid) droplets on graphene supported on different kinds of substrate, we found that the apparent wetting transparency of the supported graphene with airborne hydrocarbon adsorption depends essentially on polarities of both the liquids and the underlying substrates, and that, in most cases, the supported graphene exhibits wetting translucency. With the Owens-Wench theory, we then identified the specific components of the surface energy, which indicated that inserting graphene does not introduce a polar interaction and that the apparent transmitted polar energy of one layer of graphene is 20% for the investigated substrates. The apparent polarity of supported graphene can potentially be tuned by the underlying substrate. Practically, the wettability of graphene can be determined by investigating the competitive relationship between the reduced dispersive and polar interaction of the substrate and the increased dispersive one introduced via inserting the graphene layers. Our findings may have significant implications in designing functional nanostructures through tuning the surface properties of graphene by its surroundings.
Graphene coating- and electro-wetting strategy for micro/nanostructured surfaces

Abstract:In this work, an effective strategy for nanostructured surface wetting based on the external electric field and the graphene coating is proposed in the context of classic molecular dynamics models. For water-resistant nanogrooves, the wetting transition from the Cassie-Baxter (CB) to the Wenzel (WZ) state is generated in the presence of the monolayer graphene coating under an external electric field of about 0.07 V/Å. Moreover, due to the funnel-like structure, the electrowetting of double-trapezoid nanogrooves can be enhanced relative to that of single-trapezoid nanogrooves. Besides, the calculated profiles of dipole moments and 1D free-energy landscapes exhibit a remarkable reduction in the free energy barrier required for the wetting transition assisted by the electric field and the graphene coating. This study provides atomistic insights into the wetting behavior of nanostructures under a variety of conditions, which is of great help to manufacture micro/nanostructured surfaces.

Abstract:Wettability played an essential role in surface science, and the wettability of low surface tension working fluids has a significant impact on the heat transfer and flow performance of micro and nanoscale equipment. Constructing surface structures was a significant method for adjusting wettability. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the wetting behaviors of different low-surface tension working fluids on the nano-pillar substrates with different spacings. A revised formula was adopted to determine the wetting state of droplets at the nanoscale. Contact angles at the nanoscale were predicted with the thermodynamic model. The effects of surface tension, droplet size, and the spacing aspect ratio on the wetting behavior of nanodroplets were studied comparatively. The results indicated that the revised formula was more accurate than the direct measurement method in determining the wetting state at the nanoscale. The thermodynamic model provided excellent predictions on contact angles in the Cassie and Composite states. However, the results had a massive decline in the Wenzel state, which was caused by the potential field distribution. This study proposed a revised parameter to determine the wetting state of droplets in nanoscale wetting, which was conducive to analyzing the nanoscale wetting state.

Abstract:In this work, three-dimensional graphene foams（GFs） are synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscope（SEM） and Raman spectroscopy. The SEM images indicate that after the growth of graphene, the graphene covers the surface of nickel（Ni） foam uniformly. Raman spectra show that the percentages of monolayer, bilayer, trilayer, and multilayer graphenes are ～ 58%, ～ 32%, ～ 8%, and ～ 2%, respectively. The contact angle（CA）（～ 12?） of water droplet（3 μL） on GF is found to be larger than that on Ni foam（～ 107?）, indicating that graphenes have changed the surface wettability of the Ni foam. Meanwhile, the dynamic characteristics of CA of water droplet on GF are different from those on Ni foam. The mechanisms for different behaviors are discussed, which are attributed to volatilization and seepage of water droplets.
