Abstract:Sequences with almost perfect linear complexity profile are of importance for the linear complexity theory of sequences. In this paper we present several constructions of sequences with almost perfect linear complexity profile based on algebraic curves over finite fields. Moreover, some interesting consequences and examples are derived from our constructions.

Abstract:Algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points have received a lot of attention in recent years. We present a survey of this subject covering both the case of fixed genus and the asymptotic theory. A strong impetus in the asymptotic theory has come from a thorough exploitation of the method of infinite class field towers. On the other hand, we show by a counterexample that Perret’s conjecture on infinite class field towers is wrong, and so Perret’s method of infinite ramified class field towers breaks down. In the last two sections of the paper we discuss applications of algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points to coding theory and to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:Since the discovery of algebraic geometry codes by Goppa in 1978–1982, mathematicians have been looking for other constructions of block codes from algebraic curves or varieties of higher dimension. In this survey article, we present various constructions of block codes from algebraic curves. As there is a one-to-one correspondence between algebraic curves and function fields, we adopt the function field language throughout this paper; this is advantageous for most of the constructions in this paper.

Abstract:Based on curves over finite fields with many rational points, we present two constructions of linear codes from local expansions of functions at a fixed rational point. It turns out that codes from our constructions have the same bound on their parameters as Goppa's (1981) geometry codes. Furthermore, we prove that our second construction is equivalent to Goppa's construction. Finally, an additional construction of linear codes from maximal curves shows that these codes have better parameters than Goppa's geometry codes from maximal curves for a certain interval of parameters.

Then we give the general terms of the sequences $(G_{n}(P))_{n\geq 0}$ and $(H_{n}(P))_{n\geq 0}$ associated to Tate normal form of an elliptic curve. As an application of this we determine square and cube terms in these sequences.

Abstract:Ever since the seminal work of Goppa on algebraic-geometry codes, rational points on algebraic curves over finite fields have been an important research topic for algebraic geometers and coding theorists. The focus in this application of algebraic geometry to coding theory is on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points (relative to the genus). Recently, the authors discovered another important application of such curves, namely to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences. These sequences are needed for numerical methods in areas as diverse as computational physics and mathematical finance. This has given additional impetus to the theory of, and the search for, algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points. This book aims to sum up the theoretical work on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points and to discuss the applications of such curves to algebraic coding theory and the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.

Abstract:Complexity of sequences plays an important role in pseudorandom sequences and cryptography. In this paper, we present a construction of sequences with high nonlinear complexity from function fields. The main idea is to make use of function fields with many rational places as well as an automorphism of large order. We illustrate our construction through rational function fields and cyclotomic function fields in which there exist some automorphisms of large order. It turns out that we are able to: 1) slightly increase the length of the inversive sequence without losing nonlinear complexity and 2) obtain sequences with much larger nonlinear complexity than random sequences.

Abstract:For stream ciphers, we need to generate pseudorandom sequences which are of properties of unpredictability and randomness. A important measure of unpredictability and randomness is the linear complexity profile (l.c.p.) l(a)(n) of a sequence a, A sequence a is called almost perfect if the l.c.p. is l(a)(n) = n/2 + O(1). Based on curves over finite fields, we present in this correspondence a method to construct almost perfect sequences. We also illustrate our construction by explicit examples from the projective line and elliptic curves over the binary field.
