Abstract:Algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points have received a lot of attention in recent years. We present a survey of this subject covering both the case of fixed genus and the asymptotic theory. A strong impetus in the asymptotic theory has come from a thorough exploitation of the method of infinite class field towers. On the other hand, we show by a counterexample that Perret’s conjecture on infinite class field towers is wrong, and so Perret’s method of infinite ramified class field towers breaks down. In the last two sections of the paper we discuss applications of algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points to coding theory and to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:We present new general results on algebraic curves over finite fields and apply them to obtain improved constructions of algebraic curves with many rational points over the finite fields of order 8 and 16. Abstract:Ever since the seminal work of Goppa on algebraic-geometry codes, rational points on algebraic curves over finite fields have been an important research topic for algebraic geometers and coding theorists. The focus in this application of algebraic geometry to coding theory is on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points (relative to the genus). Recently, the authors discovered another important application of such curves, namely to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences. These sequences are needed for numerical methods in areas as diverse as computational physics and mathematical finance. This has given additional impetus to the theory of, and the search for, algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points. This book aims to sum up the theoretical work on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points and to discuss the applications of such curves to algebraic coding theory and the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:We study the number of rational points of smooth projective curves over finite fields in some relative situations in the spirit of a previous paper from an euclidean point of vue. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.

Abstract:The reach of algebraic curves in cryptography goes far beyond elliptic curve or public key cryptography yet these other application areas have not been systematically covered in the literature. Addressing this gap, Algebraic Curves in Cryptography explores the rich uses of algebraic curves in a range of cryptographic applications, such as secret sharing, frameproof codes, and broadcast encryption. Suitable for researchers and graduate students in mathematics and computer science, this self-contained book is one of the first to focus on many topics in cryptography involving algebraic curves. After supplying the necessary background on algebraic curves, the authors discuss error-correcting codes, including algebraic geometry codes, and provide an introduction to elliptic curves. Each chapter in the remainder of the book deals with a selected topic in cryptography (other than elliptic curve cryptography). The topics covered include secret sharing schemes, authentication codes, frameproof codes, key distribution schemes, broadcast encryption, and sequences. Zeta-functions of Curves over Finite Fields

Abstract:Curves over finite fields are of great importance in cryptography and coding theory. Through studying their zeta-functions, we would be able to find out vital arithmetic and geometric information about them and their Jacobians, including the number of rational points on this kind of curves. In this paper, I investigate if it is possible to construct a curve over finite fields of a given genus $g$ whose zeta-function is given as a product of zeta-functions of $g$ elliptic curves, and find out alternative methods if it is not possible. Basically, I look for conditions which those $g$ elliptic curves should satisfy such that their product (of their Jacobians) is isogenous to the Jacobian of a curve of a given genus $g$. Then from this isogenous relationship I can determine the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius endomorphism of the Jacobian of the new curve and by this characteristic polynomial I can thus determine the zeta-function of this new curve. By using the zeta-functions of curves in the form as generating functions, the number of rational points on curves can even be found out, which may lead to further researches relating to some applications in cryptography, coding theory and even information theory.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:A new algebraic Cayley graph is constructed using finite fields. It provides a more flexible source of expander graphs. Its connectedness, the number of connected components, and diameter bound are studied via Weil's estimate for character sums. Furthermore, we study the algorithmic problem of computing the number of connected components and establish a link to the integer factorization problem.

Abstract:In this paper, an algorithm that determines a real algebraic curve is outlined. Its basic step is to divide the plane into subdomains that include only simple branches of the algebraic curve without singular points. Each of the branches is then stably and efficiently traced in the particular subdomain. Except for tracing, the algorithm requires only a couple of simple operations on polynomials that can be carried out exactly if the coefficients are rational, and the determination of the real roots of several univariate polynomials.

Abstract:<p> We give an upper bound on the number of rational points of an arbitrary Zariski closed subset of a projective space over a finite field <math alttext="bold upper F Subscript q"> <semantics> <msub> <mrow> <mi mathvariant="bold">F</mi> </mrow> <mi>q</mi> </msub> <annotation>\mathbf {F}_q</annotation> </semantics> </math> . This bound depends only on the dimensions and degrees of the irreducible components and holds for very general projective varieties, even reducible and nonequidimensional. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Ghorpade and Lachaud on the maximal number of rational points of an equidimensional projective variety. </p>
