Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated the growth of three dimensional graphene/carbon nanotubes hybrid carbon nanostructures on metal foam through a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The as-grown three dimensional carbon nanostructure foams can be potentially used as the electrodes of energy storage devices such as supercapacitors and batteries. During the CVD process, the carbon nanostructures are grown on highly porous nickel foam to form a high surface area 3-D carbon nanostructure by introducing a mixture precursor gases (H2, C2H2). The surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results demonstrated relatively homogeneous and densely packed 3-D carbon nanostructure. The quality was characterized by Raman spectroscopy. To further increase the capacitive capability the supercapacitors were fabricated based on the electrodes of carbon nanostructure foam and cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were conducted to determine their performance.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) thermal reduced graphene network (TRGN) deposition on Ni foam without any conductive agents and polymer binders was successfully synthesized by dipping Ni foam into graphene oxide (GO) suspension and subsequent thermal reduction process. The direct and close contact between thermal reduced graphene and Ni foam is beneficial to the enhanced conductivity of the electrode, as well as the improvement of ion diffusion/transport into the electrode. Additionally, low-temperature reduction of GO possesses a large amount of stable oxygen-containing groups that can provide high pseudocapacitance. As a result, the TRGN electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 442.8Fg−1 at 2mVs−1 in 6molL−1 KOH. Moreover, symmetric supercapacitor based on TRGN exhibits a maximum energy density of 30.4Whkg−1 based on the total mass of the two electrodes in 1molL−1 Na2SO4 electrolyte, as well as excellent cycling stability with 118% of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles.

Abstract:An N‐superdoped 3D graphene network structure with an N‐doping level up to 15.8 at% for high‐performance supercapacitor is designed and synthesized, in which the graphene foam with high conductivity acts as skeleton and nested with N‐superdoped reduced graphene oxide arogels. This material shows a highly conductive interconnected 3D porous structure (3.33 S cm−1), large surface area (583 m2 g−1), low internal resistance (0.4 Ω), good wettability, and a great number of active sites. Because of the multiple synergistic effects of these features, the supercapacitors based on this material show a remarkably excellent electrochemical behavior with a high specific capacitance (of up to 380, 332, and 245 F g−1 in alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes measured in three‐electrode configuration, respectively, 297 F g−1 in alkaline electrolytes measured in two‐electrode configuration), good rate capability, excellent cycling stability (93.5% retention after 4600 cycles), and low internal resistance (0.4 Ω), resulting in high power density with proper high energy density.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials have been full of vigor and tremendous potentiality for application in supercapacitors due to its variety of unique properties such as electronic properties, simple synthesis, etc.In developing new macroscopic nanostructured graphene materials for supercapacitors, considerable efforts have been made by the scientist including our research group. In this account, we describe our development of the construction of the assembled graphene especially fiber and foam, which have great potential in addressing the challenges in the synthesis of graphene-based electrode materials for supercapacitors. As the supercapacitors are reviewed in this article, they are accordant with the rapid development of flexible, lightweight, and wearable-electronic devices, overcoming the major some drawbacks of conventional bulk supercapacitors. We hope that this summary will benefit the further research of graphene-based materials for the applications in electrochemical energy storage devices and beyond.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are promising alternative energy storage systems due to their relatively fast rate of energy storage and delivery. We describe a simple and scalable method to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) few-layer graphene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) hybrid nanostructures on industrial grade metal foam foils (nickel foam) via a one-step ambient pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) process. The as-grown few-layer graphene/MWNT nanocarbon foams are in the form of a homogeneous and densely packed hierarchical nanostructures and possess a very large surface area of 743m2g−1. Symmetrical electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) of 3D hybrid hierarchical few-layer graphene/MWNT nanostructures show a high specific capacitance of 286Fg−1 which leads to an energy density of 39.72Whkg−1 and a superior power density of up to 154.67kWkg−1. Moreover, the capacitance retention of 99.34% after 85000 charge–discharge cycles demonstrates the very high stability of the electrode architectures for supercapacitors. These merits enable the innovative 3D hierarchical few-layer graphene/MWNT foam to serve as high performance EDLC electrodes, resulting in energy storage devices with very high stability and power density.
Three-Dimensional Functionalized Graphenes with Systematical Control over the Interconnected Pores and Surface Functional Groups for High Energy Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Three-dimensional functionalized multilayer graphenes (3D FMG) with systematically controllable interconnected pores and surface functional groups are prepared by using combined hydrochloric acid-assisted ultrasonic exfoliation and thermal reduction approach. Electrochemical analyses show that the optimized 3D FMG owns an amazing high specific capacitance of 508Fg−1 at 5mVs−1 in aqueous electrolyte system. The energy density of 15, 32, and 66Whkg−1 has been obtained at the power density of 14, 43, and 52kWkg−1 for the 3D FMG-based supercapacitor in the aqueous, organic and ionic liquid electrolyte system, respectively. 94% of the initial capacitance of the 3D FMG-based supercapacitor is retained after 10,000 cycles at 1Ag−1 in the aqueous system. The outstanding electrochemical performances of the 3D FMG are attributed to the strong synergistic effect of the interconnected pores and surface functional groups. The hierarchical interconnected pore channels can efficiently facilitate the ionic/electronic transports between the electrodes and electrolyte ions and appropriately prevent the restacking of graphene sheets. The rational surface functional groups may improve a facile accessibility of the electrodes with the electrolytes and provide an additional pseudocapacitance.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanomaterial, was widely used in many electrochemical applications due to their high mechanical strength, good chemical stability, high specific surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. However, the major concern for those applications was the activity reaction surface area of the 2D plane structure of graphene. Therefore, in order to enhance the reaction surface area of graphene, the development of a highly porous network-macrostructure with large surface area three-dimensional graphene is an effective strategy to be achieved for electrochemical applications. In this study, we reported an effective and simple method to prepare highly macro-porous, large-scale and flexible three-dimensional graphene foam (3D GF) which was synthesized on the commercial nickel network via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The quality of 3D GF was investigated by using a Raman spectroscopy. A field-emission scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the surface morphology of 3D GF. A high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was utilized to analyze the inter-layer distance and the number of layers of graphene. Raman results revealed the highly uniform performance of the large-scale 3D GFs. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) were carried out to examine the electrochemical properties. Compared with the traditional 2D plane-structure graphene synthesized on the Ni foil, the CV and EIS results measured by the 3D GF confirmed its superior capacitive behavior, higher specific surface area, and also demonstrated the excellent power capabilities with a low solution resistance and charge transfer resistance. It was found that the specific capacitance of 3D GF was three times larger than the traditional 2D plane-structure graphene. In this study, a tube furnace thermal CVD was utilized to synthesize the large-scale 3D GF. The Ni forms can be curled and loaded into the tube furnace for CVD processes to fabricate the large-scale 3D GFs easily. We provided an easy method to fabricate the highly macro-porous, large-scale and flexible 3D GFs for the future graphene-based potential applications.
Electrophoresis-microwave synthesis of S,N-doped graphene foam for high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:The three-dimensional self-standing architecture of heteroatom-doped graphene is the ideal electrode material for supercapacitors. However, the facile control of its composition and structure is still a challenge. Herein we have reported a new method of electrochemical-coagulation-type electrophoretic deposition involving a bubble template and subsequent in situ microwave reduction, so as to controllably prepare a sulfur, nitrogen-doped graphene foam (dGF) on ultrathin graphite paper. With the abundant interconnected pores, the high specific surface area of 1806 m(2) g(-1), and the dual-doping of sulfur and nitrogen, the dGF exhibited a high specific capacitance of 354 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and good rate performance (64.7% capacitance retention at 50 A g(-1)). By virtue of the advantages of the graphite paper as both the deposition substrate and an in situ microwave reduction initiator, the interdigital electrodes were facilely obtained by tailoring the shape of the graphite paper. The assembled flexible supercapacitor had an energy density of 71.5 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 0.65 kW kg(-1) and retains a specific capacitance of 99.5% after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles. This study provided an ideal flow process to construct a graphene self-standing architecture, which presents potential application value in catalysis, energy storage, and environmental protection.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons are thin strips of graphene with high aspect ratio similar to carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and have been verified to exhibit excellent chemical and physical properties. Although individual graphene nanoribbons have been produced by longitudinal unzipping of carbon nanotubes or patterned growth in large scale, it is still a challenge to construct these unique structures into macroscopic functional architectures using a cost-effective method. Here, we present an electrophoresis method to introduce graphene nanoribbons into commercial polyurethane sponges to fabricate polyurethane-based graphene nanoribbons sponges, which inherit the three-dimensional network and high porosity from original polyurethane sponges. The composite sponges exhibit outstanding mechanical, electronic and lipophilic–hydrophobic properties. Meanwhile, the graphene nanoribbon composite sponges with enhanced surface area and chemical functionality can serve as supercapacitor electrodes, showing a good cycling stability of 92% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles tested in a three-electrode electrochemical configuration. Our multifunctional graphene nanoribbon composite sponges may find potential applications in many fields such as environmental cleanup, flexible supercapacitors and compression strain sensors.

Abstract:A macroporous graphene network was prepared through poly-ethyleneimine-induced coagulation of graphene-oxide nanosheets from the dispersion. The as-prepared electrode made of graphene assemblies exhibited the high surface areal specific capacitance of 46.3 mu F cm(-2), excellent rate performance, and long cyclic life, which are attributed to the face-to-edge aggregation of exfoliated single-layer graphene nanosheets.

Abstract:Metal oxide nanoparticles equipped graphene with outstanding performance display broad application. Compared with graphene sheets loaded nanoparticles, such 3D architecture not only has the intrinsic perfor-mance of 2D graphene and nanoparticles, but also provides advanced functionality in many aspects. Up to now, many strategies have been explored to construct 3D graphene hybrids. However, the application of extra agents and/or agglomeration nanoparticles has a detrimental impact on particle applications. Herein, we present a molecular self-assembly strategy for producing high-quality 3D graphene microstructures with uniform metal oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles by directly deriving 3D amphiphilic Zn(MAA)2 precursors with a well-layered structure into 3D graphene hybrid. Notably, the organic part of organized Zn(MAA)2 molecules play a struc-turally crucial function in the formation of the graphene layers. It not only guides the ordered self-assemblies, but also facilitates the rapid in-situ formation of graphene structures by generating lots of allyl radicals in the heating process. Meanwhile, during the formation of graphene layers, ZnO NPs generated from carboxylate groups of Zn (MAA)2 molecules penetrate into the graphene. The as-obtained ZG-500 HSs as supercapacitor electrode displays a specific capacitance of 272.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on ZG-500 HSs and activated carbon provides an energy density of 13.4 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 387.5 W kg-1. This novel strategy opens up a potential and green route to high quality 3D graphene hybrids for supercapacitor.
3D Flexible O/N Co-doped Graphene Foams for Supercapacitor Electrodes with High Volumetric and Areal Capacitances

Abstract:3D flexible O/N co-doped graphene foams (GF) have been designed and fabricated successfully via combining the compression/hot curing strategy with chemical reduction and hydrothermal treatment, in which melamine foams were used not only as the source of N/O functional groups for the introduction of pseudocapacitance but also as the sacrificial template to inhibit the agglomeration of graphene. Also, the mechanism for method of the compressing/hot curing has been investigated systematically. And the resultant GF demonstrates excellent mechanical strength and flexibility. When the compacting GF is used as free-standing electrodes for supercapacitor, it exhibits more excellent ability of charge storage than that of pristine graphene foams. And 10 MPa-GF electrodes delivers high areal capacitance of 375 mu F cm(-2) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), excellent rate capabilities and superior cycling stability of above 100%. According to the analysis of capacitance contribution for 10 MPa-GF electrode, the pseudocapacitance originated from N/O functional groups is up to-65% of the contribution of total capacitance. Moreover, the symmetric supercapacitor comprised of 10 MPa-GF electrodes presents a maximum energy density of 16 Wh kg(-1) (8 Wh L-1) and a maximum power density of 17 kW kg(-1) (8.6 kW L-1). A Confinement Strategy To Prepare N-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide Foams With Desired Monolithic Structures For Supercapacitors

Abstract:It is a challenge to achieve pure graphene foams with a desired monolithic structure in order to take advantage of the excellent properties of graphene-based macroscopic assemblies. Here, we introduced a confinement fabrication strategy to prepare nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide foams (NrGFs) through a one-step hydrothermal process. The melamine foam (MF) skeleton was removed during the hydrothermal reaction, and the NrGF retained its desired monolithic structure by the confinement of solution ionic strength. Due to the roof-tile-like microscopic morphology with high N-doping (9.88 at%), the free-standing graphene foam electrode exhibited excellent capacitive performance. The resulting NrGF-based symmetric supercapacitor displayed a remarkably enhanced specific capacitance of 260 F g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and 173 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1) in an aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, the facility of fabrication makes it a promising material in many contexts for large scale production, such as energy storage, environmental remediation and strain sensors. Furthermore, this synthesis strategy can be expanded to prepare other pure macroporous foams or composites by using different building blocks (such as CNTs and MXene).

Abstract:Supercapacitors, as high-performance energy storage devices, have garnered extensive research interest. Furthermore, capacitive deionization technology based on a supercapacitor has emerged as a crucial solution to tackling issues of freshwater scarcity and seawater pollution. However, their power density and cycling lifespan remain constrained by electrode materials. In recent years, 3D network graphene materials have gained prominence as an ideal choice due to their unique porous structure, high specific surface area, and excellent conductivity. This review summarizes the preparation methods of 3D network graphene materials, including techniques like chemical vapor deposition, graphene oxide reduction, and foaming methods. It also discusses their applications and the ongoing research advancements in supercapacitor energy storage and capacitive deionization. Ultimately, this review offers researchers an understanding and outlook on the application of 3D network graphene materials in supercapacitor energy storage and capacitive deionization.

Abstract:Here, a novel graphene composite foam with 3D lightweight continuous and interconnected nickel network was successfully synthesized by hydroiodic (HI) acid using nickel foam as substrate template. The graphene had closely coated on the backbone of the 3D nickel conductive network to form nickel network supported composite foam without any polymeric binder during the HI reduction of GO process, and the nickel conductive network can be maintained even in only a small amount of nickel with 1.1 mg/cm(2) and had replaced the traditional current collector nickel foam (35 mg/cm(2)). In the electrochemical measurement, a supercapacitor device based on the 3D nickel network and graphene composite foam exhibited high rate capability of 100 F/g at 0.5 A/g and 86.7 F/g at 62.5 A/g, good cycle stability with capacitance retention of 95% after 2000 cycles, low internal resistance (1.68 Ω), and excellent flexible properties. Furthermore, the gravimetric capacitance (calculated using the total mass of the electrode) was high up to 40.9 F/g. Our work not only demonstrates high-quality graphene/nickel composite foam, but also provides a universal route for the rational design of high performance of supercapacitors.
Preparation and properties of graphene for supercapacitor application

Abstract:Graphene were prepared by simple redox method using graphite as raw materials. Supercapacitors were fabricated using the as-prepared graphene as electrode in organic electrolyte. The phase and morphology were characterized by XRD and SEM methods. The performance of supercapacitors were analyzed using galvanostatic charging and discharging testing, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that graphene-based supercapacitors had larger values of specific capacitance than that of the natural graphite-based ones. The specific capacitance was 45.5 F/g (rentention rate at 85.5%) after 888 charging and discharging cycles at the current density of 200 mA/g between the voltage from 1.25 to 2.5 V. The graphene-based supercapacitors have a good charge-discharge cycle performance.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped three-dimensional (3D) carbon fiber networks have attracted immense interest because of their extensive applications in energy-storage devices. However, their practical production and usage remain a great challenge because of the costly and complex synthetic procedures. In this work, flexible B, N, and O heteroatom-doped 3D interconnected carbon microfiber networks (BNOCs) with controllable pore sizes and elemental contents were successfully synthesized via a facile one-step "chemical vapor etching and doping" method using cellulose-made paper, the most abundant and cost-effective biomass, as an original network-frame precursor. Under a rational design, the BNOCs exhibited interconnected microfiber-network structure as expressways for electron transport, spacious accessible surface area for charge accumulation, abundant mesopores and macropores for rapid inner-pore ion diffusion, and lots of functional groups for additional pseudocapacitance. Being applied as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors, BNOC-based supercapacitors not only revealed a high specific capacitance of 357 F g-1, a high capacitance retention of 150 F g-1 at 200 A g-1, a high energy density of 12.4 W h kg-1, and a maximum power density of 300.6 kW kg-1 with an aqueous electrolyte in two-electrode configuration but also exhibited a high specific capacitance of up to 242.4 F g-1 in an all-solid-state supercapacitor.
Preparation of Few Layer Three‐dimensional Graphene Networks by CVD for Energy Storage Applications

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene networks (3DGNs) with a controllable number of layers (from monolayer to few layers) are fabricated by CVD on a Ni foam rod (NFR) template. The special morphology of the NFR and accompanying concentration gradients of CH4 gas provide the necessary conditions to deposit the 3DGNs with varied thicknesses on different areas of one substrate. The high conductivity, large Brunner-Emmett-Teller (BET) area, and three-dimensional network of the 3DGNs make it a potential material for use in the electrochemical field. Supercapacitors with the 3DGNs-based electrode show a high energy density ∼34.2 Wh kg−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1, and a specific capacitance of 246 F g−1 is obtained in a 30 wt.-% KOH aqueous electrolyte solution. Moreover, the resultant devices maintain high performances under high current density conditions, indicating the outstanding stability of the prepared 3DGNs.
