Abstract:Carbon nanotube spaced graphene aerogels have been prepared by a hydrothermal method and used for supercapacitor applications. The specific surface area and specific capacitance can be controlled by tuning the amount of added carbon nanotubes. The as-prepared composite aerogels retain the advantage of aerogel structure in providing macropores to ensure electrodes fast wetted by the electrolyte ions and also possess additional mesopores created by the carbon nanotube spacers for more ion adsorption. Benefited from that, the composite aerogels exhibit significantly enhanced supercapacitor properties in both aqueous and ionic liquid electrolyte. Compared with graphene aerogels, the composite aerogels show a 37% larger specific capacitance of 245.5 F g(-1) at a current density of 2.5 A g(-1) and high rate capability of 197.0 F g(-1) at a high current density of 80 A g(-1) in aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, the composite aerogels deliver a 33% larger specific capacitance of 183.3 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and a high energy density of 80 Wh kg(-1) when using an ionic liquid (EMIMBF4) as the electrolyte. Abstract:Graphene oxide nanosheets can be assembled into multifunctional graphene aerogels for sensing and energy storage applications. However, due to strong van der Waals forces, reduced graphene oxide nanosheets often stack together, significantly compromising their performance. Here, we demonstrate high-performance multifunctional hybrid carbon aerogels by hybridizing graphene oxide nanosheets with functionalized carbon fibers using a hydrothermal assembly method followed by two-step freezing, natural drying, and annealing. We compared the difference between carbon microfibers and carbon nanofibers. Our results show that flexible carbon nanofibers can enable more bindings with graphene nanosheets, creating stabler three-dimensional structures and enabling more efficient electron transfer. The resulting hybrid graphene aerogels have a high compressive strength of 56.7 kPa at 50% strain, an electrical conductivity of 3.072 S m−1, and a strain-responsive electrical response sensitivity of 11.3 k Pa−1 in a low-pressure range of 0–0.15 kPa. These hybrid carbon aerogels were applied in strain sensors to detect various human bio-signals. Furthermore, they were used as free-standing electrodes in flexible supercapacitors, demonstrating satisfactory energy storage performances. Overall, we show that three-dimensional graphene-carbon nanofiber hybrid aerogels have excellent multifunctional properties for applications in flexible electronics and energy storage devices.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based aerogels is challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the structures and properties to satisfy various demands. Herein, we develop a versatile graphene oxide/nanofiber aerogel (GNA), in which cellulose acetate nanofibers are introduced in graphene aerogels for the first time to prevent the sheets from over-stacking and enhance connectivity of cell walls. This GNA exhibits excellent underwater stability and high adsorption capacity (> 800 mg/g) towards cationic dyes. Its density, pore structure and mechanical properties are easily tuned by varying the composition as well as compression deformation. The reshaping ability of GNA combined with co-deposition of polydopamine and polyethyleneimine makes it a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and shape-stable material to quickly separate oil-in-water emulsions with an extremely high flux (> 19,000 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)). On the other hand, after chemical modification and crosslinking via vapor deposition of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, GNA turns to be a superhydrophobic and superelastic material that can adsorb organic liquids with an adsorption capacity of 230-734 g/g, being superior to most of known adsorbents. The materials are mass-producible and combine mechanical robustness and easy regeneration, providing a simple strategy for fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based aerogels satisfying various applications in water treatment.

Abstract:Nanostructured carbon aerogels with outstanding physicochemical properties have exhibited great application potentials in widespread fields and therefore attracted extensive attentions recently. It is still a challenge so far to develop flexible and economical routes to fabricate high-performance nanocarbon aerogels, preferably based on renewable resources. Here, ultralight and multifunctional reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanofiber (RGO/CNF) aerogels are fabricated from graphene oxide and low-cost, industrially produced bacterial cellulose by a three-step process of freeze-casting, freeze-drying, and pyrolysis. The prepared RGO/CNF aerogel possesses a very low apparent density in the range of 0.7-10.2 mg cm(-3) and a high porosity up to 99%, as well as a mechanically robust and electrically conductive 3D network structure, which makes it to be an excellent candidate as absorber for oil clean-up and an ideal platform for constructing flexible and stretchable conductors.

Abstract:In the study, in order to completely utilize the advantages of graphene monolayer, nano-fibrillated cellulose with cations from polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used as the intercalator to efficiently exfoliate the reduced graphene oxide into a single layer with a thickness about 0.47 nm by means of ionic attraction. After the high-temperature treatment (800 degrees C), the carbon aerogel (NC-GO@NFC) with an architectural structure was manufactured by combining 2D monolayer graphene with 1D nano-fibrillated cellulose. The pore volume (0.55 cm(3)/g) and specific surface area (441 m(2)/g) of NC-GO@NFC were about two times higher than those of GOcarbon aerogel. Particularly, the buoyant porous aerogel showed superhydrophobicity with a large water contact angle (155.5 degrees) due to the increase of -NH- and C-C as well as the pyrolysis of hydrophilic groups. The superhydrophobicity endows the aerogel with an exceptional oil/water separation performance. The carbon aerogels exhibited the adsorption capability towards many organic phases (including lubricating oil and some organic solvents). In addition, the efficient continuous removal and collection of organic solvents (methylbenzene) from water surface was achieved by a designed water/oil pump device. Therefore, the recyclable 3D porous composite aerogel had the application potential as organic solvent adsorbents and oil/water separation agents. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Mechanically enhanced aerogels of graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared via hydrothermal reduction of graphene oxide and CNTs in the presence of ferrous ions (FeSO4 solution). The resultant graphene-CNT aerogels possess a 3-D network of carbon structures containing micro-sized pores and alpha-FeOOH nanorods within the matrix. The CNTs may act as a scaffold in the aerogels to resist compressive stress and prevent them from collapse. The aerogels have very low density (0.011-0.087 g cm(-3)), depending on the amount of ferrous ions used in the synthesis. In addition, the aerogels also have excellent mechanical properties with elastic modulus between 0.011 and 0.29 MPa. Because of their porous structures, the graphene-CNTs aerogels showed excellent removal ability to aqueous lead with rates between 230 and 451 mg g(-1) and thus could be potentially used as a promising adsorbent for many environmental applications.

Abstract:We reported a new type of graphene aerogel-nickel foam (GA@NF) hybrid material prepared through a facile two-step approach and explored its energy storage application as a binder-free supercapacitor electrode. By simple freeze-drying and the subsequent thermal annealing of graphene oxide hydrogel-NF hybrid precursor, three-dimensional graphene aerogels with high mass, hierarchical porosity, and high conductivity were deposited on a NF framework. The resulting binder-free GA@NF electrode exhibited satisfactory double-layer capacitive behavior with high rate capability, good electrochemical cyclic stability, and a high specific capacitance of 366 F g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1). The versatility of this approach was further verified by the successful preparation of 3D graphene/carbon nanotube hybrid aerogel-NF as a supercapacitor electrode, also with improved electrochemical performance. With advantageous features, such a facile and versatile fabrication technique shows great promise in the preparation of various types of carbon-metal hybrid electrodes.

Abstract:Reasonable design of hybrid graphene aerogels with low cost, high specific surface area (SSA), and excellent mechanical properties is of great significance for future large-scale energy storage applications. Herein, we report a composite aerogel of biomass carbon/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/nanocellulose (CNF) by a one-step self-assembly method. In the hybrid aerogel, biomass carbon particles with low cost and high SSA are assembled into the framework of rGO effectively preventing the restacking of rGO nanosheets and resulting in high SSA and high conductivity. Negatively charged nanocellulose fibers act as the binder between biomass carbon particles and rGO sheets, facilitating the formation of a strengthening network. As a result, the hybrid aerogel with a high content of biomass carbon (76% mass ratio) demonstrates excellent mechanical strength (240 kPa), high SSA (1007.9 m2 g−1), and efficient MnO2 deposition capability (33.9 mg cm−2). Employing the composite aerogel as electrodes to fabricate a self-supporting supercapacitor, an admirable capacitive performance (4.8F cm−2) was achieved. This work provides an effective method to fabricate low cost hybrid graphene aerogel materials with excellent performances for wide applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the two-step activation Eucommia wood tar-based activated carbon (ETAC), cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were assembled to form composite aerogel in mild condition. Impressively, the doping of optimizing ETAC greatly improved the overall specific surface area (SSA) of the aerogel, and the CNF extracted from Eucommia ulmoides wood was used to enhance the mechanical properties of graphene aerogel. Besides, the composite aerogels with high content of ETAC (67% of mass ratio) possessed efficient MnOx deposition capability (1540 mg/g), which could assemble an asymmetric free-binder supercapacitor, exhibiting an ultrahigh specific capacitance and prominent cycling stability. This work offered a feasible method to fabricate free-binder composite aerogels with excellent electrochemical property for broad applications in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Macroscopic-scale graphene-based aerogels are attractive candidates for thermal insulation and water purification due to their unique properties. However, both the mechanically brittle and single functionality restrain their practical application. Herein, covalently crosslinked double−network graphene-based aerogels were designed and prepared via co−gelation of graphene oxide and organosilanes, followed by freeze-drying and thermal-annealing processes. The multicovalent interactions including hydrolytic copolycondensation, ring opening, and silylation reactions occurred during the co−gelation process. The optimized aerogel exhibits highly elastic performance, which can maintain 93.7% of the maximum stress after 200 compress-release cycles at 50% strain. The graphene−polyorganosiloxane hybrid aerogel also synchronously satisfies hydrophobic property and low thermal conductivity (23 mW m−1 K−1) at room temperature, demonstrating its great potential as a thermal insulator in humid and hot environments. Moreover, the aerogels show excellent absorption capacity (uptake of >200 g g−1) and efficient separation of three-component water/oil/dye mixtures. This work shows that organosilanes are promising crosslinkers for producing highly compressible and multifunctional graphene-based aerogels for thermal management and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials with lightweight and multifunctional integrated applications have broad development application prospects. Carbonaceous materials are one of the promising candidates due to their low density, high conductivity, diverse structure and tunable composition. Here, we prepared nitrogen-doped graphene nanoribbon/carbon nanotube (N-GNR/CNT) hybrid aerogel by assembling and annealing partially unzipped carbon nanotubes. The remaining CNTs serve as skeletons to maintain GNR unfolding, while the unfolded GNRs serve as "wings" to interconnect and form a 3D network. The 3D network provides channels for fast electron transmission, and meanwhile GNRs offer rich edges for N doping. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of CNTs and GNRs, this aerogel shows the characteristics of ultralight, ultrathin, strong electromagnetic wave absorption and efficient joule heating. This study presents a new strategy for preparing multifunctional electromagnetic wave absorbing materials, and broadens the application of graphene nanoribbons.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene/polyaniline/Co3O4 (GPC) ternary hybrid aerogels is firstly fabricated via self-assembly of graphene oxide/polyaniline (GO/PANI) by in situ polymerization and GO/cobalt salts hybrid sols through hydrothermal treatment. The prepared ternary hybrid aerogels features an interconnected 3D macroporous structure in which PANI/Co3O4 nanoparticles (PANI/Co3O4 NPs) with a diameter ∼ 20nm uniformly distributed on the surface of graphene nanosheets (GNs), and possesses an excellent performance with high specific capacitance of 1247Fg−1at a current density of 1Ag−1 and the capability can reach to 755Fg−1 even at 20Ag−1. Furthermore, no obvious capacitance loss is observed during 3500 cycles, indicating an outstanding cycling stability. The extraordinary electrochemical performance of the 3D GPC hybrid can be attributed to not only the high capacitance of PANI and Co3O4 with pseudocapacitive, but also the strong synergistic effect between the uniformly dispersed PANI/Co3O4 NPs and graphene aerogel, in which a powerful 3D porous structure with short diffusion path length for fast electron transportation.
