Abstract:Uniform hydrogel films from micro/nano-hydrogel particles were prepared on the silicon wafers and microcantilevers. These films were assembled on the substrates by using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The microcantilevers coated by such films responded to the environmental pH changes, indicating that the EPD could be used as a new method for modifying microcantilevers.

Abstract:The formation of polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMSs)-based layer-by-layer multilayer ultrathin films on charged surfaces prepared from water and phosphate buffer solutions has been investigated. The multilayer films prepared under these conditions showed different surface roughness. Nanoscale islands and network structures were observed homogeneously on the multilayer film prepared from pure water solutions, which is attributing to the ultrahydrobic property of the multilayer film. The formation of nanoscale islands and network structures was due to the aggregation of PDMS-based polyelectrolytes in water. This work provides a facile approach for generating ultrahydrophobic thin films on any charged surfaces by PDMS polyelectrolytes. Copyright (C) 2009 Hongyan Gao et al.

Abstract:Ultrathin hydrogel films composed of cross-linked polymer networks swollen by water, with soft and moisturized features similar to biological tissue, play a vital role in flexible biosensors and wearable electronics. However, achieving efficient and continuous fabrication of such films remains a challenge. Here, we present a microfluidic-based strategy for the continuous fabrication of free-standing ultrathin hydrogel films by using laminar flow, which can be precisely controlled in the micrometer scale. Compared with conventional methods, the microfluidic-based method shows advantages in producing hydrogel films with a high homogeneity as well as maintaining the structural integrity, without the need of supporting substrates and sophisticated equipment. This strategy allows the precise control over the thickness of the hydrogel films ranging from 15 ± 0.2 to 39 ± 0.5 μm, by adjusting the height of the microfluidic channels, with predictable opportunities for scaling up. Therefore, our strategy provides a facile route to produce advanced thin polymer films in a universal, steerable, and scalable manner and will promote the applications of thin polymer films in biosensors and wearable electronics.

Abstract:<p>Hydrogels have emerged as promising antimicrobial materials due to their unique three-dimensional structure, which provides sufficient capacity to accommodate various materials, including small molecules, polymers and particles. Coating substrates with antibacterial hydrogel layers has been recognized as an effective strategy to combat bacterial colonization. To prevent possible delamination of hydrogel coatings from substrates, it is crucial to attach hydrogel layers <em>via</em> stronger links, such as covalent bonds. To date, various surface chemical strategies have been developed to introduce hydrogel coatings on different substrates. In this review, we first give a brief introduction of the major strategies for designing antibacterial coatings. Then, we summarize the chemical methods used to fix the antibacterial hydrogel layer on the substrate, which include surface-initiated graft crosslinking polymerization, anchoring the hydrogel layer on the surface during crosslinking, and chemical crosslinking of layer-by-layer coating. The reaction mechanisms of each method and matched pretreatment strategies are systemically documented with the aim of introducing available protocols to researchers in related fields for designing hydrogel-coated antibacterial surfaces.</p>

A Facile Method to Construct Hybrid Multilayered Films As a Strong and Multifunctional Antibacterial Coating

Abstract:A multifunctional multilayered film containing TiO(2) nanoparticles as contact-active antibacterial agent and nanosilver as a release-active antibacterial agent was fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly. TiO(2) nanoparticles with the anatase crystalline dominant structure were synthesized via a sol-gel method. The QCM, AFM, and contact angle measurement results indicated that the TiO(2) nanoparticle-chitosan was successfully assembled with heparin via layer-by-layer assembly. The UV visible spectroscopy demonstrated that the silver ions could be loaded into the multilayers and in situ synthesize silver nanoparticles in the multilayers template. The short-term antibacterial assay showed the TiO(2)-chitosan/heparin multilayers loaded with nanosilver was bactericidal both in the low intensity UV light and in the dark. The long-term antibacterial assay indicated although the antibacterial in dark decreased with the PBS immersion time, the hybrid multilayered films sustained the long-term antibacterial in the low intensity UV light.

Abstract:A facile route for the fabrication of surface-attached hydrogel thin films with well-controlled chemistry and tailored architecture on wide range of thickness from nanometers to micrometers is reported. The synthesis, which consists in cross-linking and grafting the preformed and ene-reactive polymer chains through thiol--ene click chemistry, has the main advantage of being well-controlled without the addition of initiators. As thiol--ene click reaction can be selectively activated by UV-irradiation (in addition to thermal heating), micropatterned hydrogel films are easily synthesized. The versatility of our approach is illustrated by the possibility to fabricate various chemical polymer networks, like stimuli-responsive hydrogels, on various solid substrates, such as silicon wafers, glass, and gold surfaces. Another attractive feature is the development of new complex hydrogel films with targeted architecture. The fabrication of various architectures for polymer films is demonstrated: multilayer hydrogel films in which single-networks are stacked one onto the other, interpenetrating networks films with mixture of two networks in the same layer, and nanocomposite hydrogel films where nanoparticles are stably trapped inside the mesh of the network. Thanks to its simplicity and its versatility this novel approach to surface-attached hydrogel films should have a strong impact in the area of polymer coatings

Abstract:Building long-lasting antimicrobial and clean surfaces is one of the most effective strategies to inhibit bacterial infection, but obtaining an ideal smart surface with highly efficient, controllable, and regenerative properties still encounters many challenges. Herein, we fabricate an ultrathin brush–hydrogel hybrid coating (PSBMA-P(HEAA-co-METAC)) by integrating antifouling polyzwitterionic (PSBMA) brushes and antimicrobial polycationic (P(HEAA-co-METAC)) hydrogels. The smart bacterial killing–releasing properties can be achieved independently by the opposite volume and conformation changes between the swelling (shrinking) of P(HEAA-co-METAC) hydrogel layer and the shrinking (swelling) of PSBMA brushes. The friction test reveals that both METAC and SBMA components support great lubrication. By tuning the initial organosilane (BrTMOS:KH570) ratios, the prepared PSBMA-P(HEAA-co-METAC) coating exhibits different antibacterial abilities from single “capturing–killing” to versatile “capturing–killing–releasing.” Most importantly, 99% of the bacterial-releasing rate can be easily achieved via 0.5 M NaCl treatment. This smart surface not only possesses long-lasting antibacterial performance, only ∼1.09 × 105 cell·cm−2 bacterial residue even after 72 h exposure to bacteria solutions, but also can be regenerated and triggered between water and salt solution multiple times. This work provides a new way to fabricate antibacterial smart hydrogel coatings with bacterial “killing–releasing” functions and shows great potential for biomedical applications.

Abstract:In this work, fully biodegradable antimicrobial hydrogels were prepared facilely via a thiol-ene "click" reaction under human physiological conditions using multifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) derivatives as precursors. Water soluble and degradable PEG derivatives with multi-enes and multi-thiols, respectively, were synthesized by polycondensation of oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) with "clickable" monomers. Ammonium groups with long alkyl chains were incorporated into one of the precursors covalently, using dodecyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl) methylammonium chloride as a comonomer. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to characterize the precursors and hydrogels. These types of cationic PEG-type hydrogels showed strong antibacterial abilities against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria due to the ammonium moieties. Moreover, the hydrogel with fewer ammonium moieties still possessed significant antibacterial abilities, but low toxicity, and has the potential to be used as a medical material.

Abstract:Bacterial colonization on the surface of medical implanted devices and bacterial infection-induced biofilm have been a lethal risk for patients of clinical treatment. While antibacterial coatings fabricated by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly techniques have been well explored, the facile preparation of substrate-independent smart antibacterial coatings with on-demand antibiotics release profile and excellent antibacterial performance is still urgently needed. In this work, this goal is addressed by LBL assembly fabrication of robust antibacterial coatings using naturally occurring and commercially available building blocks (i.e., aminoglycosides, 5,6-dihydroxyindole, and formylphenylboronic acid) via the subsequentially performed mussel-inspired polymerization and dynamic covalent chemistries. The resulting antibacterial coatings on different substates all presente a dynamic feature (i.e., pH-responsive), on-demand antibiotics release properties, and highly effective antibacterial performance both in vitro and in vivo. It is envisioned that this work can expand the scope of LBL assembly technique toward the next generation of robust and universal antibacterial coating materials by using natural building blocks and readily available chemistries.

Layer-by-layer Assembled Microgel Films Containing Silver Nanoparticles as Antimicrobial Coatings on Plastics

Abstract:Antimicrobial coatings on hydrophobic plastic surfaces were directly fabricated by layer-by-layer deposition of cross-linked poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and dextran microgels containing silver nanoparticles (Ag@PAH-D) with poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The as-prepared Ag@PAH-D/PSS microgel films are effective in prohibiting the growth of Escherichia coli. The antimicrobial activity of the coatings can be easily controlled by tailoring the number of coating deposition cycles. The antimicrobial coatings of Ag@PAH-D/PSS microgel films are stable and have satisfactory adhesion to the underlying plastic substrates, which guarantee the long-term application of the coatings.

Abstract:A novel kind of antimicrobial composite film comprised of graphene oxide sheets and lysozyme was fabricated by a facile solution-cast method. Self-assembly of the sheets endows the film with a multilayered ordered structure with protein molecules intercalated between adjacent layers. Precise control of the protein amount within the film was achieved for a controlled releasing dynamics of the composite in water. Being exfoliated from the substrate, the film can be transferred and used as a freestanding antimicrobial coating. This unique blend provides a practical method for the development of multifunctional nanocomposite materials.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of synergistic hybrid antibacterial materials is a promising approach for achieving effective sterilization while compensating for the deficiency of a single component. Despite being highly effective biocidal components, the poor UV light stability of some N-halamines limits their applications. This study was conducted to address this issue by the rational integration of cyclic N-halamine precursor (PGHAPA) with microwaved zinc oxide (MWPPy-ZnO) nanoparticles via covalent bonds and the preparation of cellulose nanofibrils based antibacterial composite films after chlorination (CNF/MWPPy-ZnO-PGHAPA-Cl). The proposed films offered tight lamellar structure, considerable thermal stability and better mechanical properties. The results from the FT-IR and XPS experiments provided the evidence of chemical reactions among the PGHAPA, MWPPy-ZnO, and CNF film. Notably, the CNF/MWPPy-ZnO-PGHAPA-Cl films showed improved UV stability with a chlorine content of up to 0.16 % after 24 h of irradiation, which was much greater than that of the CNF/PGHAPA-Cl films. Furthermore, the CNF/MWPPy-ZnO-PGHAPA-Cl films displayed rapid bactericidal activity, inactivating all the contacted Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains within 5 min, along with prominent biofilm disruption, indicating great potential for daily food packaging applications.

Abstract:Bacterial infectious diseases and bacterial-infected environments have been threatening the health of human beings all over the world. In view of the increased bacteria resistance caused by overuse or improper use of antibiotics, antibacterial biomaterials are developed as the substitutes for antibiotics in some cases. Among them, antibacterial hydrogels are attracting more and more attention due to easy preparation process and diversity of structures by changing their chemical cross-linkers via covalent bonds or noncovalent physical interactions, which can endow them with various specific functions such as high toughness and stretchability, injectability, self-healing, tissue adhesiveness and rapid hemostasis, easy loading and controlled drug release, superior biocompatibility and antioxidation as well as good conductivity. In this review, the recent progress of antibacterial hydrogel including the fabrication methodologies, interior structures, performances, antibacterial mechanisms, and applications of various antibacterial hydrogels is summarized. According to the bacteria-killing modes of hydrogels, several representative hydrogels such as silver nanoparticles-based hydrogel, photoresponsive hydrogel including photothermal and photocatalytic, self-bacteria-killing hydrogel such as inherent antibacterial peptides and cationic polymers, and antibiotics-loading hydrogel are focused on. Furthermore, current challenges of antibacterial hydrogels are discussed and future perspectives in this field are also proposed.

Abstract:Hydrogels with antibacterial activity have attracted more and more attention in the wound dressing area. Here, we developed antibacterial hydrogels directly from cellulose, xylan, and silver nitrate via a three-step process, involving chemical modification, Schiff-base reaction, and green reduction reaction. Amino cellulose (AC) and dialdehyde xylan (DAX) were prepared by chemical modification. Then, they were cross-linked by Schiff-base bonds (C = N bonds) to prepare AC-DAX hydrogels. The crosslinking density and porosity of AC-DAX hydrogels were significantly influenced by the mass ratios of AC to DAX. The AC-DAX-Ag hydrogels were synthesized by the reduction reaction of the C = N bonds without adding additional reductants. The demonstrated AC-DAX hydrogels and AC-DAX-Ag hydrogels showed similar layered surface structure and swelling capacity. In addition, AC-DAX-Ag hydrogels exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli with an obvious inhibition zone diameter about 0.50 cm. The developed AC-DAX-Ag hydrogels with antibacterial activity represents an attractive alternative to the wound dressing materials toward biomedical area. This work provides new ideas for the fabrication of bio-based antibacterial material.

Abstract:Chitosan as an antibacterial agent and heparin as an anti-adhesive agent were alternatively deposited onto aminolyzed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films to construct anti-adhesive and antibacterial multilayer films. The contact-angle and UV data verified the progressive buildup of the multilayer film by alternate deposition of the polyelectrolytes. The properties of multilayer films were investigated by contact angle, atomic force microscopy (AFM), lateral force microscopy (LFM) and UV spectra. The results of initial adhesion of Escherichia coli (E. coli) on PET substrates showed that the number of E. coli adhered onto the control PET was in a much greater extent than onto the chitosan/heparin multilayer films, and the number of adhesive bacteria decreased with a decrease in assembly pH. The in vitro antibacterial test indicated that a multilayer of chitosan/heparin could kill the bacteria effectively. The number of viable bacteria decreased by 7% after 7h in contact with the control PET films, but by 46–68% for the multilayer-modified PET films. Only 3–8% of the cells were viable for the multilayer-modified PET films after 24h. It is interesting to find the assembly pH has a remarkable effect on the antibacterial property of the multilayer. The number of viable bacteria on the multilayer assembled at pH=3.8, 2.9 and 6.0 decreased by 68%, 58% and 46%, respectively. Such an easy processing and shape-independent method to prepare an anti-adhesive and antibacterial surface may have good potential for surface modification of cardiovascular devices.
