Abstract:In this study, an electrochemical technique was used to deposit nickel oxide on stainless steel (SS) substrates with varying amounts of the precursor nickel nitrate (N1-0.5M, N2-1M and N3-1.5M), and nickel hydroxides Ni(OH) 2 are electrodeposited on the SS substrate. After that, they were subjected to heat treatment to become a homogeneous nickel oxide nanoparticle layer. The deposited films were performed for the structural and morphological analysis by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and FTIR. The maximized N3 film exhibited the highest specific capacitance value of 514 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte with great rate capability, resulting in prolonged cycling.

Support-induced Morphology and Content Tailored NiCo2O4 Nanostructures on Temperature-Dependent Carbon Nanofibers with Enhanced Pseudocapacitive Performance

Abstract:Direct anchorage of metal oxides on carbon nanofibers is challenging, and simultaneous modulation of morphology, content and thus pseudocapacitance of anchored metal oxides has never been achieved. Herein we report direct anchorage of NiCo2O4 nanostructures with tailored morphology, content and pseudocapacitance, on temperature-dependent carbon nanofibers (CNEs), which are derived from zinctrimesic acid fibers at a temperature no more than 600 degrees C. The temperature-dependent CNEs, including CNF-390, CNF-450 and CNF-600, were first investigated by SEM, TG, FT-IR, XPS and Boehm titration studies. It is found that their textural property, thermal stability and surface functionality vary depending on pyrolysis temperature. As a result, the morphology, content and thus the pseudocapacitance of anchored NiCo2O4 nanostructures are also temperature-dependent. It is revealed that as increasing the pyrolysis temperature, the shape of NiCo2O4 is transformed from embedded nanoparticles to exposed nanosheets while its content decreases from 95 to 55 wt%. The resultant NiCo2O4/CNF-450, bearing highly dispersed nanosheets and optimized NiCo2O4 content (72.6%), exhibits the best capacitive performance with a large specific capacitance of 870 F g(-1) at a scan rate of 1 mV s(-1) , and a high energy density of 39.3 Wh kg(-1) in the case of power density of 300 W kg(-1) . The elaborately fabricated NiCo2O4/CNF-450 also shows excellent charge-discharge stability (with the capacity retention ratio of 85.7% after 5000 cycles). The improved accessibility for more pseudocapacitive NiCo 2 0 4 nanosheets, as well as the strong interaction between NiCo2O4 and carbon nanofiber, should be responsible for the enhanced capacitive performance of NiCo2O4/CNF-450. This research also provides the concept of support-induced modulation of property and pseudocapacitive performance of anchored metal oxides. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Cotton-like NiO is formed on the surface of bare Ni foam after hydrothermal process and calcination process, while ultrathin NiO nanoflakes occur on Ni foam coated with graphene. The high specific capacitance of 1782Fg−1 at 1Ag−1 and 90.2% capacity retention at 1Ag−1 after 5000cycles charge-discharge test are found. The graphene induces the high electrical conductivity and excellent interfacial contact, in addition, the graphene facilitates the forming of ultrathin NiO nanoflakes which result in huge pseudocapacitance due to large surface area and abundant mesoporous. The unique microstructure characteristic promotes interfacial electron transport in the electrode material and improves ion diffusion during the electrochemical reaction process.
Controllable in Situ Synthesis of Ni(OH)2 and NiO Films on Nickel Foam As Additive-Free Electrodes for Electrochemical Capacitors

Abstract:Nickel hydroxide nanosheet films are prepared via a hydrothermal treatment of nickel foam at a low temperature using Fe(NO3)(3) as an oxidant without any templates and nickel salts. The as-formed Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets are vertically self-grown on the Ni foam substrate. They are inter-connected and freestanding to form a homogeneously porous coating on the substrate with a thickness about 1 mm. The mass loading of Ni(OH)(2) film on nickel foam can be precisely determined by thermogravimetric analysis on base of phase transformation from nickel hydroxide to oxide. The mass loading of Ni(OH)(2) is strongly related with the concentration of Fe(NO3)(3). The Ni(OH)(2) film grown on nickel foam can directly serve as additive-free electrodes and display a much high specific capacitance, 1100 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), excellent rate-capability performance owing to fast electron and ion transport. The Ni(OH)(2) film can transform into NiO by annealing under a moderate temperature. However, the NiO film shows a low specific capacitance of 79 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1). The preparation method concerns limited chemicals and produces little residual, implying a green chemical process to fabricate Ni(OH)(2) and NiO films on Ni substrate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Porous nickel oxide films were synthesized for better pseudocapacitive performance.Porous nickel oxide films were fab-ricated via a facile alloy-dealloy method.Through electrodeposition of Zn film on Ni substrate,heat treatment and dealloying in alkaline solution,porous nickel oxide films could be formed on the smooth nickel substrate and nickel foam.The effects of heat treatment on the morphology and electrochemical properties of the porous nickel oxide film were investigated.The results show that the diameter and density of the pores can be tuned by changing the temperature of the heat treatment.The porous nickel ox-ide film with larger pore size and uniform pore distribution has been obtained by annealing at 350 ℃.Moreover,the sample ob-tained by annealing at 350 ℃ shows larger specific capacitance,better rate capability and higher cycle stability.

Abstract:Nanostructured Co3O4 films have been deposited on nickel foam in a magnetic-field-assisted hydrothermal process followed by annealing in air. The magnetic field strength is varied to study its relationship with nanostructures, morphology, and electrochemical properties of the Co3O4 electrodes. The Co3O4 films synthesized in the weak magnetic fields consist of dispersed nanoneedles, which are different from clustered nanoneedles when the magnetic field is absent. Moreover, the magnetic fields (of several millitesla) induced substantial changes in the nanostructures and electrochemical properties of the Co3O4 films. A possible formation mechanism of Co3O4 nanoneedles is proposed by comparing the morphologies and nanostructures of the films synthesized with and without the magnetic fields. Among these electrodes, the optimal one has a high specific capacitance (970.8 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), good power capability (847.5 F g−1 at 6.0 A g−1), and an excellent retention ratio (93.7 % over 1000 cycles). All these impressive results demonstrate that magnetic fields may be an economic and effective tool in hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nanostructured β-Ni(OH)2 was synthesized on nickel foam substrate via a mild hydrothermal process in an aqueous solution containing only Ni(NO3)2 and NaOH. The reaction conditions including reaction time and reaction temperature played crucial roles in the construction of different morphological Ni(OH)2 nanostructures. Cyclic voltammetry and constant current charge–discharge measurements illustrated the good electrochemical performance of the Ni(OH)2 electrode, and it displayed a maximum specific capacitance as high as 1778Fg−1 at a current density of 2.5Ag−1.

Abstract:This research work concerns with the magnetic and electrochemical characteristics of hydrothermally prepared nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles for their use as working electrode material in supercapacitor. Through the use of thermal gravimetric (TG-DTA), the thermal stability and heat adsorption/desorption characteristics of the as-produced NiO nanoparticles were examined. By using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique at ambient, 600 °C and 800 °C annealing temperatures, the trigonal and cubic structure of the as prepared and annealed nanoparticles was discovered. The spherical and cubic morphology of the as synthesized and annealed (800 °C) NiO nanoparticles was confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) analysis. The functional groups, optical bandgap energy, surface chemistry, specific surface area and superparamagnetic behavior of the annealed (800 °C) NiO nanoparticles were determined through Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR), UV-DRS, XPS, BET and VSM characterization approaches, respectively. At the lowest scan rates of 10 mVs −1 and 0.5 Ag −1 , the pseudocapacitive behavior was noticed utilizing CV and GCD analyses. An excellent electrical conductivity for the supercapacitor application was also shown by the Nyquist plot of the produced NiO electrode.

Abstract:Nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanomaterials with different morphologies, including nano-spheres (10-25 nm in diameter), nano-rods (50-60 nm in diameter and similar to 1 mu m in length), and nano-octahedrons (side length similar to 150 nm), have been synthesized by a single mild hydrothermal method at 160 degrees C without any surfactant. The crystal structures have been investigated by TEM, HRTEM, and studied by simulations using the program Materials Studio. The variations in the morphology, as well as the preferential crystal growth directions, depend only on the pH value of the reaction solution. A phase formation mechanism is thus proposed. Magnetization measurements at T = 300 K indicate that the NiFe2O4 nano-spheres of 10-25 nm diameter are superparamagnetic with non-saturating magnetization at H = 7 kOe. The saturation magnetization, M-S, of the nanorods is 40 emu g(-1), less than the bulk value, M-S = 46.7 to 55 emu g(-1). The coercivity is H-C = 40 Oe, reduced from the bulk value of 100 Oe. On the other hand, the nano-octahedrons have a saturation magnetization of M-S = 50 emu g(-1), the same as the bulk value. However the coercivity, H-C = 50 Oe is also much reduced from the bulk value.

Abstract:Nickel (oxy)hydroxide-based (NiOxHy) materials are widely used for energy storage and conversion devices. Understanding dynamic processes at the solid-liquid interface of nickel (oxy)hydroxide is important to improve reaction kinetics and efficiencies. In this study, in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) was used to directly investigate dynamic changes of single-layered Ni(OH)2 nanosheets during electrochemistry measurements. Reconstruction of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets, along with insertion of ions from the electrolyte, results in an increase of the volume by 56% and redox capacity by 300%. We also directly observe Fe cations adsorb and integrate heterogeneously into or onto the nanosheets as a function of applied potential, further increasing apparent volume. Our findings are important for the fundamental understanding of NiOxHy-based supercapacitors and oxygen-evolution catalysts, illustrating the dynamic nature of Ni-based nanostructures under electrochemical conditions.

Abstract:A simple, low cost and transferable colloidal processing method and the subsequent heat treatment has been optimized to prepare binder-free electrodes for their application in supercapacitors. NiO/Ni core–shell hybrid nanostructures have been synthetized by heterogeneous precipitation of metallic Ni nanospheres onto NiO nanoplatelets as seed surfaces. The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) has been used to shape the electroactive material onto 3D substrates such as Ni foams. The method has allowed us to control the growth and the homogeneity of the NiO/Ni coatings. The presence of metallic Nickel in the microstructure and the optimization of the thermal treatment have brought several improvements in the electrochemical response due to the connectivity of the final microstructure. The highest specific capacitance value has been obtained using a thermal treatment of 325 °C during 1 h in Argon. At this temperature, necks formed among ceramic-metallic nanoparticles preserve the structural integrity of the microstructure avoiding the employment of binders to enhance their connectivity. Thus, a compromise between porosity and connectivity should be established to improve electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Nanostructured transition metal oxides are a current investigation focus for supercapacitors. We herein report a facile solvothermal synthesis of nanostructured Co3O4 films on nickel foam. The morphologies and dimensions of the Co3O4 films can be effectively tuned by tailoring the solvent compositions in the solvothermal reaction solutions. The effect of solvent composition on the morphologies of nanostructured Co3O4 films is analyzed. The 3D hierarchically porous Co3O4 network film, which is synthesized in the solvothermal reaction solution with an intermediate ethylene glycol/water volume ratio ( 1 : 29), shows a markedly enhanced pseudocapacitive performance. The specific capacitances of the Co3O4 network film electrode at the current densities of 0.870 and 17.391 A g(-1) are 2817 and 1948 F g(-1), respectively, revealing its large specific capacitance and excellent rate capability. Furthermore, the Co3O4 network film electrode exhibits good electrochemical cycling stability with a specific capacitance of 1628 F g(-1) after 3500 cycles at a current density of 4.348 A g(-1). The prominent pseudocapacitive performance of the Co3O4 network film electrode can be attributed to its unique structural characteristics. The as-synthesized 3D hierarchically porous Co3O4 network film with excellent pseudocapacitive performance demonstrates promising potential as a high-performance electrode for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nickel-doped manganese dioxide nanoparticles (Ni = 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1 and 0.125 M) were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. Their structural properties, surface morphology, functional groups and magnetic properties were studied by different techniques like X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and vibrational spectroscopy. The XRD results revealed that the position of diffraction peaks agreed well with the reflection of a tetragonal structure. The crystallite size ranged from 9.2 to 27.61 nm. SEM images exhibited a smooth surface rod-shaped structure. FTIR studies showed slight shifting of the Mn-O band, which ensured the growth of nanorods. The cyclic voltammetry measurements of Ni-doped MnO 2 nanoparticles exhibited an excellent capacitance performance than pure MnO 2 . At room temperature, the MnO 2 nanoparticles exhibited paramagnetic behaviour, whereas Ni-doped MnO 2 nanoparticles exhibited superparamagnetic behaviour. This work provides a pathway for the development of high-performance supercapacitors as well as the improvement of magnetic properties of the MnO 2 nanomaterials.

Solution growth of NiO nanosheets supported on Ni foam as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors

Abstract:Well-aligned nickel oxide (NiO) nanosheets with the thickness of a few nanometers supported on a flexible substrate (Ni foam) have been fabricated by a hydrothermal approach together with a post-annealing treatment. The three-dimensional NiO nanosheets were further used as electrode materials to fabricate supercapacitors, with high specific capacitance of 943.5, 791.2, 613.5, 480, and 457.5 F g(-1) at current densities of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 A g(-1), respectively. The NiO nanosheets combined well with the substrate. When the electrode material was bended, it can still retain 91.1% of the initial capacitance after 1,200 charging/discharging cycles. Compared with Co3O4 and NiO nanostructures, the specific capacitance of NiO nanosheets is much better. These characteristics suggest that NiO nanosheet electrodes are promising for energy storage application with high power demands.
Morphology Effect on the Electrochemical Performance of NiO Films As Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:NiO films were prepared by chemical bath deposition and electrodeposition method, respectively, using nickel foam as the substrate. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the images showed that their morphologies were distinct. The NiO film prepared by chemical bath deposition was highly porous, while the film prepared by electrodeposition was dense, and both of their thickness was about 1μm. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the porous NiO film prepared by chemical bath deposition exhibited higher coulombic efficiency and weaker polarization and its specific capacity after 50 cycles was 490mAhg−1 at the discharge–charge current density of 0.5Ag−1, and 350mAhg−1 at 1.5Ag−1, higher than the electrodeposited film (230mAhg−1 at 0.5Ag−1, and 170mAhg−1 at 1.5Ag−1). The better electrochemical performances of the film prepared by chemical bath deposition are attributed to its highly porous morphology, which shorted diffusion length of lithium ions, and relaxed the volume change caused by the reaction between NiO and Li+.

Abstract:Neodymium (Nd) ions doping in NiO has a major impact on morphology tuning and electrochemical properties enhancement. Herein Un-doped and Nd-ions doped nickel oxide Nd x Ni 1-x O (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) nanostructures have been synthesized by facile hydrothermal route. The SEM analysis exhibited that dopant plays crucial role in morphology optimization. The (XRD analysis exposed the cubic structures with average crystallite size of 28 nm. The CV measurements showed an improvement in the specific capacitance values with maximum value 1492.3 F/g at 5 mV/s for 3% Nd-doped electrode with 93.4% retention after 8000 cycles. The excellent performance is attributed to easy charge mobility and conductivity linked with nanosheets clusters. The power law (b = 0.65) and Dunn method (capacitive contribution 49.5%) exhibiting their pseudocapacitors capacitive nature. Current findings confirm the potential of Nd 0.03 Ni 0.97 O as an electrochemical material and open a new avenue for application in supercapacitor.

Abstract:This Paper describes the synthesis of nickel doped ZnO is planned by chemical co-precipitation techniques. The prepared nanostructured nickel doped zinc oxide samples were analyzed by thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra red (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and cyclic voltametry (CV). Nanostructure nickel doped ZnO materials have developed as promising for the basis of its broad range of employing in diverse areas. The attractive properties of nickel doped ZnO materials are highly demanded in high-energy potential applications. The nickel doped zinc oxide materials are hexagonal wurtzite arrangement is confirmed by XRD. The morphological -features of FE-SEM show nickel doped zinc oxide NPs are the structure of spherical type with agglomeration. The calculated particle size 11 nm is confirmed by HR-TEM. EPR spectra of nickel doped zinc oxide nanoparticles are ferromagnetic nature. Further, CV studies of Ni doped ZnO materials of the specific capacitance value is 133 Fg-1 at the scan rate 10 mVs−1 it is suitable for super capacitor application. The quantum chemical calculations were done by using DFT techniques through B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of basis set.

Abstract:NiO films for lithium-ion batteries were deposited on copper plates and foam nickel substrates by electrodeposition and subsequent heat treatment at 300 °C. At a discharge/charge rate of 0.1 C, foam NiO films delivered reversible capacity larger than 650 mAh g −1 and capacity retention over 93% after 50 cycles. NiO films deposited on foam nickel exhibited higher reversible capacity, better cyclability, as well as higher rate capability than those on copper plates. The unique three-dimensionally porous morphologies of foam NiO films were responsible for the better electrochemical performance, which provided not only high electrode/electrolyte contact area but also a good electronic conduction matrix. The present finding offers a new pathway for the large scale fabrication of high-energy-density electrodes for lithium-ion batteries.
