Abstract:The recent simulation of quantum behavior in condensed matter physics by well-designed photonic structures has opened unprecedented opportunities to steer the flow of light in novel manners. Here, we propose a design to simulate massless Dirac dynamics in evanescently coupled plasmonic ridge waveguide arrays with alternating positive and negative coupling coefficients. The coupling coefficients are carefully tailored by adjusting the geometric parameters of the waveguide in arrays, which are supposed to be feasible with advanced nanofabrication techniques. Further theoretical studies are also carried out based on the coupled mode theory to discuss the influence of excitation condition on beam propagation in this massless Dirac dynamics simulation case.

Abstract:The linear spectrum and corresponding Bloch modes of shallow honeycomb lattices near Dirac points are investigated. Via perturbation theory, the dispersion relation is found to have threefold degeneracy at leading order with eigenvalue splitting at the following two orders; i.e., the threefold eigenvalue splits into single and double values. Multiscale perturbation methods are employed to describe the nonlinear dynamics of the associated wave envelopes. The dynamics of the envelope depends on different asymptotic balances whereupon a three-level nonlinear Dirac-type equation or a two-level nonlinear Dirac equation is derived. The analysis agrees well with direct numerical simulations.
Standing and Traveling Waves in a Model of Periodically Modulated One-dimensional Waveguide Arrays

Abstract:In the present work, we study coherent structures in a one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger lattice in which the coupling between waveguides is periodically modulated. Numerical experiments with single-site initial conditions show that, depending on the power, the system exhibits two fundamentally different behaviors. At low power, initial conditions with intensity concentrated in a single site give rise to transport, with the energy moving unidirectionally along the lattice, whereas high power initial conditions yield stationary solutions. We explain these two behaviors, as well as the nature of the transition between the two regimes, by analyzing a simpler model where the couplings between waveguides are given by step functions. In this case, we numerically construct both stationary and moving coherent structures, which are solutions reproducing themselves exactly after an integer multiple of the coupling period. For the stationary solutions, which are true periodic orbits, we use Floquet analysis to determine the parameter regime for which they are spectrally stable. Typically, the traveling solutions are characterized by having small-amplitude, oscillatory tails, although we identify a set of parameters for which these tails disappear. These parameters turn out to be independent of the lattice size, and our simulations suggest that for these parameters, numerically exact traveling solutions are stable.

Abstract:Under the influence of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction, we theoretically investigate the occurrence of Bloch oscillations in zigzag waveguide arrays. Because of the special topological configuration of the lattice itself, the second-order coupling (SOC) can be enhanced significantly and leads to the band alteration beyond the nearest-neighbor model, i.e., the offset of minimum value from the band edge. Contrary to the behavior in the vanishing SOC, the oscillation patterns exhibit new features, namely, a double turning-back occurs when the beam approaches the band edge. Our results can be applied to some ordered-lattice systems. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America
Standing and Traveling Waves in a Nonlinearly Dispersive Lattice Model

Abstract:In the work of Colliander et al. (2010), a minimal lattice model was constructed describing the transfer of energy to high frequencies in the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In the present work, we present a systematic study of the coherent structures, both standing and traveling, that arise in the context of this model. We find that the nonlinearly dispersive nature of the model is responsible for standing waves in the form of discrete compactons. On the other hand, analysis of the dynamical features of the simplest nontrivial variant of the model, namely the dimer case, yields both solutions where the intensity is trapped in a single site and solutions where the intensity moves between the two sites, which suggests the possibility of moving excitations in larger lattices. Such excitations are also suggested by the dynamical evolution associated with modulational instability. Our numerical computations confirm this expectation, and we systematically construct such traveling states as exact solutions in lattices of varying size, as well as explore their stability. A remarkable feature of these traveling lattice waves is that they are of "antidark" type, i.e., they are mounted on top of a non-vanishing background. These studies shed light on the existence, stability and dynamics of such standing and traveling states in $1+1$ dimensions, and pave the way for exploration of corresponding configurations in higher dimensions.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the study of wave propagation in nonlinear photonic lattices. The interplay between nonlinearity and periodicity has led researchers to manipulate light and discover new and interesting phenomena such as new classes of localized modes, usually referred to as solitons, and novel surface states that propagate robustly. A field where both nonlinearity and periodicity arises naturally is nonlinear optics. But there are other areas where waves propagating on background lattices play an important role, including photonic crystal fibers and Bose-Einstein condensation. In this review article the propagation of wave envelopes in one and two-dimensional periodic lattices associated with additional potential in the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation, termed lattice NLS equations, are studied. A discrete reduction, known as the tight-binding approximation, is employed to find the linear dispersion relation and the equations governing nonlinear discrete envelopes for two-dimensional simple periodic lattices and two-dimensional non-simple honeycomb lattices. In the limit under which the envelopes vary slowly, continuous envelope equations are derived from the discrete system. The coefficients of the linear evolution system are related to the dispersion relation in both the discrete and continuous cases. For simple lattices, the continuous systems are NLS type equations. In honeycomb lattices, in certain cases, the continuous system is found to be nonlinear Dirac equations. Finally, it is possible to realize so-called topological insulator systems in an optical waveguide setting. The modes supported by these systems are associated with spectral topological invariants and, remarkably, can propagate without backscatter from lattice defects.

Abstract:Evanescently coupled waveguide arrays provide a tabletop platform to realize a variety of Hamiltonians, where physical waveguides correspond to the individual sites of a tight-binding lattice. Nontrivial spatial structure of the waveguide modes enriches this picture and uncovers further possibilities. Here, we demonstrate that the effective coupling between $p$-like modes of adjacent photonic waveguides changes its sign depending on their relative orientation vanishing for a proper alignment at a so-called magic angle. Using femtosecond laser-written waveguides, we demonstrate this experimentally for $p$-mode dimers and graphene-like photonic lattices exhibiting quasi-flat bands at this angle. We observe diffraction-free propagation of corner and bulk states providing a robust experimental evidence of a two-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm-like caging in an optically switchable system.

Abstract:Owing to its topological properties and band collapse, Floquet helical photonic lattices have gained increasing attention as a purely classical setting to realize the optical analogues of a wide variety of quantum phenomena. We demonstrate both theoretically and numerically that light propagation in an appropriately designed helical superlattice can exhibit spatial photonic Zitterbewegung effect, i.e., a quiver spatial oscillatory motion of the beam center of mass around its mean trajectory, in both one- and two-dimensional cases. The lattice spacing determines the effective coupling strength between adjacent helical waveguides, and further drastically not only affects the oscillation amplitude and frequency, but also invert their direction of drift when the effective coupling strength is tuned from positive to negative. Complete arrest and inversion of the drift direction of Zitterbewegung effect are reported.

Abstract:Bloch waves and Bloch band of Bose-Einstein Condensates in optical lattices are studied. We provide further evidence for the loop structure in the Bloch band, and compute the critical values of the mean-field interaction strength for the Landau instability and the dynamical instability.

Abstract:This paper addresses fundamental questions arising in the theory of Bloch-Floquet waves in chiral elastic lattice systems. This area has received a significant attention in the context of "topologically protected" waveforms. Although practical applications of chiral elastic lattices are widely appreciated, especially in problems of controlling low-frequency vibrations, wave polarisation and filtering, the fundamental questions of the relationship of these lattices to classical waveforms associated with longitudinal and shear waves retain a substantial scope for further development. The notion of chirality is introduced into the systematic analysis of dispersive elastic waves in a doubly-periodic lattice. Important quantitative characteristics of the dynamic response of the lattice, such as lattice flux and lattice circulation, are used in the analysis along with the novel concept of "vortex waveforms" that characterise the dynamic response of the chiral system. We note that the continuum concepts of pressure and shear waves do not apply for waves in a lattice, especially in the case when the wavelength is comparable with the size of the elementary cell of the periodic structure. Special critical regimes are highlighted when vortex waveforms become dominant. Analytical findings are accompanied by illustrative numerical simulations.

A perturbation approach for predicting wave propagation at the spatial interface of linear and nonlinear one-dimensional lattice structures

Abstract:We present analysis of dispersive wave propagation through a spatial interface between a linear and nonlinear monatomic chain using a proposed multiple scales perturbation approach. As such, we solve interface problems at each perturbation order (up to and including the second order) and assemble multi-harmonic solutions for transmitted and back-scattered waves. The perturbation approach predicts the existence of multiple nonlinear dispersion curves in the nonlinear subdomain. Using these curves, we further predict spatially-varying, higher-harmonic generation in the transmitted field. For propagating higher-harmonic waves, their amplitude is predicted to experience oscillatory spatial modulation due to the presence of multiple wavenumbers at each frequency, whereas for evanescent waves, their amplitude is predicted to undergo a saturating modulation. A transmission analysis quantifies the increase of the extra-harmonic frequency transmission, and the decrease of the fundamental frequency transmission, as the level of nonlinearity increases. Using direct numerical integration, we show that the perturbation predictions agree closely with numerical simulations for weakly nonlinear wave propagation. Lastly, informed by the perturbation results, we suggest a wave device which tailors the transmission of higher harmonics through the choice of the nonlinear subdomain's length and/or the signal amplitude.

Abstract:The intrigue of waves on periodic lattices and gratings has resonated with physicists and mathematicians alike for decades. In-depth analysis has been devoted to the seemingly simplest array system: a one-dimensionally periodic lattice of two-dimensional scatterers embedded in a dispersionless medium governed by the Helmholtz equation. We investigate such a system and experimentally confirm the existence of a new class of generalised Rayleigh--Bloch waves that have been recently theorised to exist in classical wave regimes, without the need for resonant scatterers. Airborne acoustics serves as such a regime and here we experimentally observe the first generalised Rayleigh--Bloch waves above the first cut-off, i.e., in the radiative regime. We consider radiative acoustic lattice resonances along a diffraction grating and connect them to generalised Rayleigh--Bloch waves by considering both short and long arrays of non-resonant 2D cylindrical Neumann scatterers embedded in air. On short arrays, we observe finite lattice resonances under continuous wave excitation, and on long arrays, we observe propagating Rayleigh--Bloch waves under pulsed excitation. We interpret their existence by considering multiple wave scattering theory and, in doing so, unify differing nomenclatures used to describe waves on infinite periodic and finite arrays and the interpretation of their dispersive properties.

Abstract:Dispersive shock waves in thermal optical media are nonlinear phenomena whose intrinsic irreversibility is described by time asymmetric quantum mechanics. Recent studies demonstrated that the nonlocal wave breaking evolves in an exponentially decaying dynamics ruled by the reversed harmonic oscillator, namely, the simplest irreversible quantum system in the rigged Hilbert spaces. The generalization of this theory to more complex scenarios is still an open question. In this work, we use a thermal third-order medium with an unprecedented giant Kerr coefficient, the m-cresol/nylon mixed solution, to access an extremely nonlinear, highly nonlocal regime and realize anisotropic shock waves with internal gaps. We compare our experimental observations to results obtained under similar conditions but in hemoglobin solutions from human red blood cells, and found that the gap formation strongly depends on the nonlinearity strength. We prove that a superposition of Gamow vectors in an ad hoc rigged Hilbert space, that is, a tensorial product between the reversed and the standard harmonic oscillators spaces, describes the beam propagation beyond the shock point. The anisotropy turns out from the interaction of trapping and antitrapping potentials. Our work furnishes the description of novel intriguing shock phenomena mediated by extreme nonlinearities.

Abstract:We demonstrate that an array of discrete waveguides on a slab substrate, both featuring the $\chi^{2}$ nonlinearity, supports stable solitons composed of discrete and continuous components. Two classes of fundamental composite solitons are identified: ones consisting of a discrete fundamental-frequency (FF) component in the waveguide array, coupled to a continuous second-harmonic (SH) component in the slab waveguide, and solitons with an inverted FF/SH structure. Twisted bound states of the fundamental solitons are found too. In contrast with usual systems, the \emph{intersite-centered} fundamental solitons and bound states with the twisted continuous components are stable, in an almost entire domain of their existence.
Triggering Waves in Nonlinear Lattices: Quest for Anharmonic Phonons and Corresponding Mean-Free Paths

Abstract:Guided by a stylized experiment we develop a self-consistent anharmonic phonon concept for nonlinear lattices which allows for explicit "visualization." The idea uses a small external driving force which excites the front particles in a nonlinear lattice slab and subsequently one monitors the excited wave evolution using molecular dynamics simulations. This allows for a simultaneous, direct determination of the existence of the phonon mean free path with its corresponding anharmonic phonon wavenumber as a function of temperature. The concept for the mean free path is very distinct from known prior approaches: the latter evaluate the mean free path only indirectly, via using both, a scale for the phonon relaxation time and yet another one for the phonon velocity. Notably, the concept here is neither limited to small lattice nonlinearities nor to small frequencies. The scheme is tested for three strongly nonlinear lattices of timely current interest which either exhibit normal or anomalous heat transport.

Abstract:The spectrum of a Schrödinger operator with a perfect honeycomb lattice potential has special points,called Dirac points, where the lowest two branches of the spectrum touch.Deformations can result in the merging and disappearance of the Dirac points, and the originally intersectingdispersion relation branches separate.Corresponding to these deformations, nonlinear envelope equations are derived and their dynamics are studied.In the region where Dirac points exist, a maximally balanced equation is derived which has limits to a nonlinearSchrödinger--Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (NLSKP)-type equation and its dispersionless reduction.When the Dirac points disappear and a gap opens, a different maximally balanced equation is derived which has theNLSKP equation and a one-dimensional nonlocal evolution equation as limits.When the gap is sufficiently wide, a nonlinear Dirac equation with nonzero mass and a nonlinear Schrödingerfocusing-defocusing system are found.The latter two equations admit nonlinear localized modes. Typical dynamical behaviors of the effective envelopeequations are presented.

Abstract:The one-dimensional monoatomic lattice chain connected by nonlinear springs is investigated, and the asymptotic solution is obtained through the Lindstedt-Poincar´e perturbation method. The dispersion relation is derived with the consideration of both the nonlocal and the active control effects. The numerical results show that the nonlocal effect can effectively enhance the frequency in the middle part of the dispersion curve. When the nonlocal effect is strong enough, zero and negative group velocities will be evoked at different points along the dispersion curve, which will provide different ways of transporting energy including the forward-propagation, localization, and backwardpropagation of wavepackets related to the phase velocity. Both the nonlinear effect and the active control can enhance the frequency, but neither of them is able to produce zero or negative group velocities. Specifically, the active control enhances the frequency of the dispersion curve including the point at which the reduced wave number equals zero, and therefore gives birth to a nonzero cutoff frequency and a band gap in the low frequency range. With a combinational adjustment of all these effects, the wave propagation behaviors can be comprehensively controlled, and energy transferring can be readily manipulated in various ways.

Abstract:We introduce and study a family of lattice equations which may be viewed either as a strongly nonlinear discrete extension of the Gardner equation, or a non-convex variant of the Lotka-Volterra chain. Their deceptively simple form supports a very rich family of complex solitary patterns. Some of these patterns are also found in the quasi-continuum rendition, but the more intriguing ones, like interlaced pairs of solitary waves, or waves which may reverse their direction either spontaneously or due a collision, are an intrinsic feature of the discrete realm.
