Abstract:Bloch waves and Bloch band of Bose-Einstein Condensates in optical lattices are studied. We provide further evidence for the loop structure in the Bloch band, and compute the critical values of the mean-field interaction strength for the Landau instability and the dynamical instability.

Abstract:Superflow of a Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice is represented by a Bloch wave, a plane wave with periodic modulation of the amplitude. We review the theoretical results of the interaction effects in the energy dispersion of the Bloch waves and in the linear stability of such waves. For sufficiently strong repulsion between the atoms, the lowest Bloch band develops a loop at the edge of the Brillouin zone, with the dramatic consequence of a finite probability of Landau–Zener tunnelling even in the limit of a vanishing external force. Superfluidity can exist in the central region of the Brillouin zone in the presence of a repulsive interaction, beyond which Landau instability takes place where the system can lower its energy by making a transition into states with smaller Bloch wavenumbers. In the outer part of the region of Landau instability, the Bloch waves are also dynamically unstable in the sense that a small initial deviation grows exponentially in time. In the inner region of Landau instability, a Bloch wave is dynamically stable in the absence of persistent external perturbations. Experimental implications of our findings will be discussed.

Abstract:A loop structure was predicted to exist in the Bloch bands of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices recently in [{\it Wu and Niu, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 61}, 023402 (2000)}]. We discuss how to detect experimentally the looped band with an accelerating optical lattice through extensive and realistic numerical simulations. We find that the loop can be detected through observing either nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling or destruction of Bloch oscillations.

Abstract:Inspired by recent experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices, we consider a St\"uckelberg interferometer for a particle performing Bloch oscillations in a tight-binding model on the honeycomb lattice. The interferometer is made of two avoided crossings at the saddle points of the band structure (i.e. at M points of the reciprocal space). This problem is reminiscent of the double Dirac cone St\"uckelberg interferometer that was recently studied in the continuum limit [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 155302 (2014)]. Although the two problems share similarities -- such as the appearance of a geometric phase shift -- lattice effects, not captured by the continuum limit, make them truly different. The particle dynamics in the presence of a force is described by the Bloch Hamiltonian $H(\boldsymbol{k})$ defined from the tight-binding Hamiltonian and the position operator. This leads to many interesting effects for the lattice St\"uckelberg interferometer: a twisting of the two Landau-Zener tunnelings, saturation of the inter-band transition probability in the sudden (infinite force) limit and extended periodicity or even non-periodicity beyond the first Brillouin zone. In particular, St\"uckelberg interferometry gives access to the overlap matrix of cell-periodic Bloch states thereby allowing to fully characterize the geometry of Bloch states, as e.g. to obtain the quantum metric tensor.

Abstract:We study experimentally the stability of excited, interacting states of bosons in a double-well optical lattice in regimes where the nonlinear interactions are expected to induce "swallowtail" looped band structure. By carefully preparing different initial coherent states and observing their subsequent decay, we observe distinct decay rates that provide direct evidence for multivalued, looped band structure. The double well lattice both stabilizes the looped band structure and allows for dynamic preparation of different initial states, including states within the loop structure. We confirm our state preparation procedure with dynamic Gross-Pitaevskii calculations. The excited loop states are found to be more stable than dynamically unstable ground states, but decay faster than expected based on a mean-field stability calculation, indicating the importance of correlations beyond a mean field description.

Abstract:This article provides a synopsis of our recent experimental work exploring Bose-Einstein condensation in metastable higher Bloch bands of optical lattices. Bipartite lattice geometries have allowed us to implement appropriate band structures, which meet three basic requirements: the existence of metastable excited states sufficiently protected from collisional band relaxation, a mechanism to excite the atoms initially prepared in the lowest band with moderate entropy increase, and the possibility of cross-dimensional tunneling dynamics, necessary to establish coherence along all lattice axes. A variety of bands can be selectively populated and a subsequent thermalisation process leads to the formation of a condensate in the lowest energy state of the chosen band. As examples the 2nd, 4th and 7th bands in a bipartite square lattice are discussed. In the 2nd and 7th band, the band geometry can be tuned such that two inequivalent energetically degenerate energy minima arise at the $X_{\pm}$-points at the edge of the 1st Brillouin zone. In this case even a small interaction energy is sufficient to lock the phase between the two condensation points such that a complex-valued chiral superfluid order parameter can emerge, which breaks time reversal symmetry. In the 4th band a condensate can be formed in the $\Gamma$-point in the center of the 1st Brillouin zone, which can be used to explore topologically protected band touching points. The new techniques to access orbital degrees of freedom in higher bands greatly extend the class of many-body scenarios that can be explored with bosons in optical lattices.

Atomic Bloch-Zener Oscillations and Stückelberg Interferometry in Optical Lattices

Abstract:We report on experiments investigating quantum transport and band interferometry of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a two-band miniband structure, realized with a Fourier-synthesized optical lattice potential. Bloch-Zener oscillations, the coherent superposition of Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling between the two bands are observed. When the relative phase between paths in different bands is varied, an interference signal is observed, demonstrating the coherence of the dynamics in the miniband system. Measured fringe patterns of this Stückelberg interferometer allow to interferometrically map out the band structure of the optical lattice over the full Brillouin zone.

Abstract:We study systematically the period-doubled Bloch states for a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice. This kind of state is of form $\psi_k=e^{ikx}\phi_k(x)$, where $\phi_k(x)$ is of period twice the optical lattice constant. Our numerical results show how these nonlinear period-doubled states grow out of linear period-doubled states at a quarter away from the Brillouin zone center as the repulsive interatomic interaction increases. This is corroborated by our analytical results. We find that all nonlinear period-doubled Bloch states have both Landau instability and dynamical instability.

Abstract:The superfluidity of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices are investigated. Apart from the usual Landau instability which occurs when a BEC flows faster than the speed of sound, the BEC can also suffer a dynamical instability, resulting in period doubling and other sorts of symmetry breaking of the system. Such an instability may play a crucial role in the dissipative motion of a trapped BEC in an optical lattice recently observed [1].

Abstract:Atomic interaction leads to dephasing and damping of the Bloch oscillations (BOs) in optical lattices, which limits the observation and application of BOs. How to obtain persistent BOs is particularly important. Here, the nonlinear Bloch dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate with two-body and three-body interactions in deep optical lattices is studied. The damping rate induced by interactions is obtained. The damping induced by two-body interaction plays a dominant role, while the damping induced by three-body interaction is weak. However, when the two-body and three-body interactions satisfy a threshold, long-lived coherent BOs are observed. Furthermore, the Bloch dynamics with periodical modulation of linear force is studied. The frequencies of linear force corresponding to resonance and pseudoresonance are obtained, and rich dynamical phenomena, i.e., stable and strong BOs, drifting and dispersion of wave packet, are predicted. The controllable Bloch dynamics is provided with the periodic modulation of the linear force.

Abstract:Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in periodic potentials generate interesting physics on the instabilities of Bloch states. The lowest-energy Bloch states of BECs in pure nonlinear lattices are dynamically and Landau unstable, which breaks down BEC superfluidity. In this paper we propose to use an out-of-phase linear lattice to stabilize them. The stabilization mechanism is revealed by the averaged interaction. We further incorporate a constant interaction into BECs with mixed nonlinear and linear lattices, and reveal its effect on the instabilities of Bloch states in the lowest band.

Abstract:In a recent experiment (Z. Wu, L. Zhang, W. Sun, X.-T. Xu, B.-Z. Wang, S.-C. Ji, Y. Deng, S. Chen, X.-J. Liu, and J.-W. Pan, arXiv: 1511.08170 [cond-mat.quant-gas]), a Raman-assisted two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling has been realized for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice potential. In light of this exciting progress, we study in detail key properties of the system. As the Raman lasers inevitably couple atoms to high-lying bands, the behaviors of the system in both the single-and many-particle sectors are significantly affected. In particular, the high-band effects enhance the plane-wave phase and lead to the emergence of "roton" gaps at low Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we identify high-band-induced topological phase boundaries in both the single-particle and the quasiparticle spectra. We then derive an effective two-band model, which captures the high-band physics in the experimentally relevant regime. Our results not only offer valuable insights into the two-dimensional lattice spin-orbit coupling, but also provide a systematic formalism to model high-band effects in lattice systems with Raman-assisted spin-orbit couplings.

Abstract:We study the dynamical stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice with a time-periodic modulation potential and a constant acceleration force simultaneously. We derive the explicit expressions of quasienergies and obtain the stability diagrams of the ground state in parameter spaces. For integer and non-integer (rational) ratios of the acceleration force to the modulation frequency, different dependence relationships of the critical interaction strength on the modulation amplitude are observed. Our results are expected to help experimentalists to determine parameter regions as required.
Gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch states in Bose-Einstein condensates with current-dependent interactions

Abstract:We show how the chiral properties of Bose Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions and loaded in optical lattices can be observed in the realization of nonlinear Bloch states, whose spectrum lacks the usual periodic structure. Chirality is also manifested by spatially localized states, or gap solitons, which are found for positive rotation rates of the lattice at the energy gaps between the linear energy bands, whereas for negative rotations they appear in the semi-infinite gap of the linear spectrum. The stability of extended and localized states is checked through the spectrum of linear excitations and nonlinear time evolution of perturbed states, and the phenomenon of Bloch oscillations is explored. Our results are obtained in quasi 1D ring geometries with feasible experimental parameters.

Abstract:The Lieb Lattice exhibits intriguing properties that are of general interest in both the fundamental physics and practical applications. Here, we investigate the topological Landau-Zener Bloch oscillation in a photonic Floquet Lieb lattice, where the dimerized helical waveguides is constructed to realize the synthetic spin-orbital interaction through the Floquet mechanism, rendering us to study the impacts of topological transition from trivial gaps to non-trivial ones. The compact localized states of flat bands supported by the local symmetry of Lieb lattice will be associated with other bands by topological invariants, Chern number, and involved into Landau-Zener transition during Bloch oscillation. Importantly, the non-trivial geometrical phases after topological transitions will be taken into account for constructive and destructive interferences of wave functions. The numerical calculations of continuum photonic medium demonstrate reasonable agreements with theoretical tight-binding model. Our results provide an ongoing effort to realize designed quantum materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:We predict the existence of spatially localized nontrivial topological states of the Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interactions confined by an optical lattice. These nonlinear localized states, matter-wave gap vortices, possess a phase dislocation and exist in the gaps of the matter-wave bandgap spectrum due to the Bragg scattering. We discuss the structure, stability, and formation dynamics of the gap vortices in the case of two-dimensional optical lattices.

Abstract:We study the propagation of sound waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the velocity of propagation of sound wavepackets decreases with increasing optical lattice depth, as predicted by the Bogoliubov theory. The strong interplay between nonlinearities and the periodicity of the external potential raise new phenomena which are not present in the uniform case. Shock waves, for instance, can propagate slower than sound waves, due to the negative curvature of the dispersion relation. Moreover, nonlinear corrections to the Bogoliubov theory appear to be important even with very small density perturbations, inducing a saturation on the amplitude of the sound signal.

Intrinsic Self-Rotation of BEC Bloch Wave Packets

Abstract:The semiclassical theory of Bloch wave packet dynamics predicts a self-rotation angular momentum in asymmetric periodic potentials, which has never been observed. We show how this is manifested in Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in optical lattices. Displacing the wave packet to a corner of the Brillouin zone we obtain a current distribution with a non-quantized angular momentum, independent of the size of the distribution. A weak interatomic interaction does not modify the results, affecting only the rate of spreading in the lattice. A strong repulsive interaction results in a collapse of the wavefunction into matter-wave lattice solitons.

Abstract:We study a special dynamical regime of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring-shaped lattice where the populations in each site remain constant during the time evolution. The states in this regime are characterized by equal occupation numbers in alternate wells and non-trivial phases, while the phase differences between neighboring sites evolve in time yielding persistent currents that oscillate around the lattice. We show that the velocity circulation around the ring lattice alternates between two values determined by the number of wells and with a specific time period that is only driven by the onsite interaction energy parameter. In contrast to the self-trapping regime present in optical lattices, the occupation number at each site does not show any oscillation and the particle imbalance does not possess a lower bound for the phenomenon to occur. These findings are predicted with a multimode model and confirmed by full three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations using an effective onsite interaction energy parameter.

Abstract:We study a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional accelerated optical lattice using the mean-field version of the Bose-Hubbard model. Reminiscent of recent experiments [M. Cristiani et al., Opt. Express 12, 4 (2004)], we find a new type of an instability in this system that occurs in the limit when the acceleration is small.

Abstract:We demarcate the unstable regimes of superfluids in a Rabi-coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of optical lattices. We find that the Rabi coupling can stabilize superfluids. A significant separation between Landau and dynamical instabilities is presented in a Rabi-coupled Zeeman lattice.
