Abstract:Sulfonated-acetone-formaldehyde (SAF) was grafted with alkali lignin to prepare grafted sulfonated-acetone-formaldehyde lignin (GSL). Inspired by the electron transfer process during oxidation of phenolic hydroxyl groups in GSL, we detected a hole mobility of 2.27×10-6 cm2 V-1 s-1 with GSL as hole transport material. Comparing with non-conjugated poly (styrene sulfonic acid) (PSS), GSL was applied as p-type semiconductive dopant for PEDOT to prepare water soluble PEDOT:GSL. Simultaneously enhanced short-circuit current density and fill factor were achieved using PEDOT:GSL as hole extract layer in sandwich-structure inverted perovskite solar cells. A highly improved power conversion efficiency of 14.1 % was obtained. Our results show amorphous GSL might be of promising potential as dopant of PEDOT in organic electronics and we provide a novel propective for the design of hole transport materials based on phenols and lignin, a renewable biomass.

Abstract:Lignosulfonate (LS) with lots of active phenol and unsaturated carbon-carbon double bond groups is applied as template and dispersant to prepare a PEDOT:LS complex which possesses some superior properties including high work function (WF), superior homogeneity, and excellent waterproofness compared to the popular conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The reactivity of phenol and unsaturated carbon-carbon double bond groups can result in a covalent bonding between LS and PEDOT, improving the homogeneity of PEDOT:LS. The thermal cross-linking activity of phenol and unsaturated carbon-carbon double bond groups can result in a dense PEDOT:LS film with excellent waterproofness. Inspired by the aforementioned merits, PEDOT:LS is applied as hole extraction layer (HEL) in an inverted methylammonium-lead iodide perovskite solar cell (PSC). The PEDOT:LS-based PSC shows an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.85%, outperforming the PEDOT:PSS reference device exhibiting a PCE of 12.10% owing to the enhanced WF and homogeneity of HEL. More importantly, the PEDOT:LS-based PSC shows a higher long-term stability compared with the PEDOT:PSS reference device due to the excellent waterproofness of HEL. Our research provides a strategy for developing a new template for a conducting polymer based on lignin, a rich renewable biomass containing lots of active phenol and unsaturated carbon-carbon double bond groups.

Abstract:Inspired by the importance of the phenolic group to the electron transporting property of hole transport materials, phenolic hydroxyl groups were introduced in lignosulfonate (LS) via the alkyl chain bridging method to prepare phenolated-lignosulfonate (PLS). The results showed that the phenolic group was boosted from 0.81 mmol·g −1 of LS to 1.19 mmol·g −1 of PLS. The electrochemical property results showed two oxidation peaks in the cyclic voltammogram (CV) curve of PLS, and the oxidation potential of the PLS-modified electrode decreased by 0.5 eV compared with that of LS. This result indicates that PLS is more easily oxidized than LS. Based on the excellent electron transporting property of PLS, PLS was applied as a dopant in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT, called PEDOT:PLSs). PLS showed excellent dispersion properties for PEDOT. Moreover, the transmittance measurement results showed that the transmittance of PEDOT:PLSs exceeded 85% in the range of 300–800 nm. The CV results showed that the energy levels of PEDOT:PLSs could be flexibly adjusted by PLS amounts. The results indicate that the phenolic hydroxyl group of lignin can be easily boosted by the alkyl chain bridging method, and phenolated lignin-based polymers may have promising potential as dopants of PEDOT to produce hole transporting materials for different organic photovoltaic devices.

Efficient Hole Transport Layer for Organic Solar Cell Based on Exfoliated-MoS 2 Doped PEDOT

Abstract:We report an efficient hole transporting layer (HTL) for organic solar cell (OSC) based on solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid composed of ultrasonic-exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets and dopamine-copolymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivative (DA-P). The OSCs based on this new hybrid HTL show a marked performance improvement over those with single-component HTLs, and they retain up to 80% of their original power conversion efficiency after 35 days. Our investigations reveal that the boost in performance is due to a synergistic effect that improves both hole transport and extraction ability. This effect is mainly due to the doping of exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets on DA-P. We employ a comprehensive range of spectroscopies to uncover that the dopant is derived from the oxidation products of MoS2 nanosheets during the ultrasonic exfoliation. Our work demonstrates an efficient hybrid HTL and offers new insights into the interaction of exfoliated-MoS2 nanosheets and the PEDOT derivatives.

Abstract:In this work, we developed WS2 nanosheets (WS2 NS) doped into PEDOT:PSS (PEDOT:PSS/WS2 NS) as an efficient hole transport layer (HTL) for organic solar cells (OSCs). WS2 NS is obtained by a simple and cost-effective liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method. The results show that the PEDOT:PSS:WS2 NS anode interlayer has higher work function, reduced roughness and improved hole mobility. The devices based on PEDOT:PSS:WS2 NS interlayer show enhanced extraction and transportation of holes and improved fill factor and short-circuit current density. Based on PM6:Y6, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 14.35% to 15.67% after WS2 NS doping.

Abstract:Amine functionalized carbon dots are doped into the hole transport layer (HTL) of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene‐sulfonate), improving its conductivity and maintaining good work function. The afforded organic solar cells with this doped HTL exhibit enhanced power conversion efficiency due to improved charge extraction ability. The hole transport layer (HTL) is an important component in organic solar cells (OSCs). As a commonly used HTL, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene‐sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) in OSCs generally exhibits relatively low conductivity, hindering device performance improvement. Herein, amine‐functionalized carbon dots (CDs‐N) are introduced as dopants of PEDOT:PSS, which can effectively enhance the HTL conductivity while maintaining a similar work function. The PEDOT:PSS+CDs‐N devices exhibit higher power conversion efficiencies due to the improved charge extraction ability. It is found that the larger conjugated backbones of CDs‐N and the amine functional groups interacting with PSS are keys for such optimization. This work illustrates the potential of CDs for the applications on interface layers in OSCs.

Abstract:The properties of hole transport layers (HTL) greatly affect the performance of inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSC). To understand the mechanisms involved, solvent treatments to HTL poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) by DMSO, ethanol, ethanol:10 vol% DMSO, DMF and acetonitrile were performed when fabricating the PSC devices. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Xray diffraction (XRD) results show that the crystal size of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) increased after solvent treatment to PEDOT: PSS. MAPbI(3) film with a uniform crystal size and smooth surface was obtained when being deposited on top of PEDOT: PSS that has been modified with solvent with a strong coordination ability. In the other cases, crystal size homogeneity and surface roughness of the MAPbI(3) film was worse. The improved surface roughness and crystal size homogeneity of the MAPbI(3) film enhanced the short circuit current (J(sc)), and therefore the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC. It was found that both the stability of the intermediate phase MAI-DMSO-PbI2, which is related to the coordination ability of the solvent molecules, and the morphology of PEDOT: PSS film, influenced the morphology of the CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) film. Our findings provide the basis for better controlling the morphology of MAPbI(3) films in inverted planar heterojunction PSC.

Abstract:Solution-processable poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a widely used hole transporting layer (HTL) in organic solar cells (OSCs). However, it is a challenge to adopt it as the HTL on hydrophobic active layers to fabricate inverted OSCs. Surfactants are generally added to improve the wettability of aqueous PEDOT:PSS. In this work, we report that surfactants could induce a change in the work function (WF) of PEDOT:PSS and significantly influence the device performance. Fluorine-containing surfactants could deliver higher device performance than fluorine-free surfactants because the fluorine-free surfactants decrease the WF of PEDOT:PSS, which results in poor electrical contact between the WF of PEDOT:PSS and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of the polymer donor of the active layer. Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) has been the most popular conductive polymer as a hole transport material in organic solar cells (OSCs). Modification of PEDOT: PSS can improve its various properties to realize high performance in OSCs. The conductivity of PEDOT: PSS is an essential factor in determining device performance. In this work, PEDOT: PSS-BA, PEDOT: PSS-HA, and PEDOT: PSS-OA are prepared via facile doping of corresponding alkyl diamines into PEDOT: PSS, considering the amino ion can interact with redundant sulfonic acid groups of PSS. All the modified products exhibit enhanced conductivities due to their more ordered molecular packing comparing PEDOT: PSS. Using PTQ10 and m-BTP-PhC6 as the binary active layer, the OSC devices based on PEDOT: PSS-BA yield a superior power conversion efficiency of 18.44%, which ranks as one of the highest values in the binary OSCs.

Abstract:Solvent treatment has been widely used to improve the device performance of both Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Polymer Solar Cells (PSCs). One of the proposed mechanisms is the modification of the buried PEDOT:PSS layer underneath the organic active layer by the permeating solvent. By measuring the lateral electric conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS layer, the 3 orders of magnitude's enhancement on the conductivity after solvent treatment confirms that the solvent permeates through the top organic active layer and modifies the PEDOT:PSS layer. Using a “peel-off” method, the buried PEDOT:PSS layer is fully exposed and studied by UV–vis spectra, XPS spectra, and c-AFM images. The data suggest that the permeating solvent dissolves PSS, changes PEDOT:PSS′ core-shell structure into a linear/coiled structure, and moves PSS from the bulk to the surface. As a result, PEDOT becomes more continuous in the bulk. The continuous conducting PEDOT-rich domains create percolating pathways for the current which significantly improve electric conductivity.

Abstract:Black Phosphorus (BP) has shown great potential in optoelectronic devices due to its remarkable semiconductor properties. Herein, liquid-exfoliated BP nanosheets is doped into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) to form a hybrid hole transport layers (HTLs). The incorporation of BP nanosheets in PEDOT:PSS dramatically changes the nanostructure and electrical conductivity of film. The BP doped PEDOT:PSS HTLs possess excellent charge selectivity and transport capability, which are proved in non-fullerene and fullerene blend system based polymer solar cells (PSCs). Furthermore, the nanostructure of PM6:Y6 light absorber changes a lot after introduction of BP nanosheets. Thus, weak charge recombination loss, high exciton generation rate and dissociation probability, and low transport resistance are observed in BP nanosheets doped PEDOT:PSS HTLs based cells, which result in improved power conversion efficiency (PCE). As a result, significant improvement of PCE (>18%) is observed in both non-fullerene and fullerene blend systems based cells. This result demonstrates a simple and effective strategy to form efficient HTLs in high-efficiency PSCs.

Abstract:Upon consideration of intrinsic insulated poly(styrenesulfonate) in conductive PEDOT:PSS poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate), we investigated the structure homogeneity of PEDOT:PSS on its hole injection/extraction property in our previous work. For an enhancement of the structural homogeneity of PEDOT derivatives, conductive dispersant poly(diphenylamine-4-sulfonic acid) (PDAS) was applied to efficiently dope PEDOT to obtain a new water-dispersed conductive polymer PEDOT:PDAS. Compared with traditional PEDOT:PSS, PEDOT:PDAS showed much higher work function (5.38 eV), lower acidity (pH of about 7), outstanding film formation, and prospective structural homogeneity. It is worth mentioning that the conductivity of PEDOT:PDAS (0.135 S cm(-1)) was an order of magnitude higher than that of PEDOT:PSS-4083 (0.02 S cm(-1)) although PEDOT:PDAS exhibited very low PEDOT content. Organic solar cells using PEDOT:PDAS as the extraction layer showed comparable performance with the PEDOT:PSS control devices. More interestingly, PEDOT:PDAS powder can be redispersed several times because of the weak aggregation among PDAS backbones, and our result provides a practically feasible approach for the efficient storage and transportation of PEDOT ink for future industrial applications such as antistatic coating.

Abstract:Although PEDOT:PSS is the most prominently used conducting polymer as hole transporting layer (HTL) material in organic solar cells (OSCs), the strong acidity of PEDOT:PSS has been proved to cause corrosion on electrodes, which is largely responsible for device instability. At present, the development of a non‐corrosive and stable PEDOT with comparable performance to PEDOT:PSS remains a great challenge in the field. Herein, a solid n‐PEDOT:POM powder with neutral pH is synthesized by utilizing polyoxometalate (POM) as an oxidizing reagent, which exhibits excellent water solubility, high chemical stability, and superior hole collection ability. Impressively, an amazing fill factor of 0.80 along with a photovoltaic efficiency of 17.62% is obtained in the OSC by using n‐PEDOT:POM as the HTL, suggesting an exceptional hole collection ability for n‐PEDOT:POM. In addition, the neutral pH of PEDOT:PSS effectively improves the long‐term stability of OSCs. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that, compared to the electrode/PEDOT:PSS interface, the permeation of dissociative indium from the electrode to n‐PEDOT:POM can be greatly retarded, which proves the non‐corrosive effect of n‐PEDOT:POM and its improvement of device stability. The successful preparation of a non‐corrosive and stable PEDOT derivative without sacrificing its hole collection ability provides the most fruitful new insight into developing high‐performance HTL materials. A solid n‐PEDOT:POM powder with neutral pH is synthesized by utilizing polyoxometalate as an oxidizing reagent, which exhibits excellent water solubility, high chemical stability and superior hole collection ability. Organic solar cells (OSCs) with n‐PEDOT:POM as a hole transport layer exhibit a photovoltaic efficiency of 17.62% with a fill factor of 0.80. In addition, the neutral pH of PEDOT:PSS effectively improves the long‐term stability of OSCs.

Abstract:The conformation of PEDOT chains are regulated from helical benzoyl to linear quinone structure via incorporation of 2D Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15 dopant into the conventional PEDOT:PSS interlayer. As a result, the PCE of OPVs based on D18:L8‐BO is boosted from 18.37% to 19.26%. The application of Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15 doping PEDOT:PSS strategy demonstrates great potential for the development of strongly conductive, large‐work‐function, highly transparent, and excellent‐waterproof PEDOT:PSS interlayer toward highly efficient and stable OPVs. Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely utilized as the hole transport layer (HTL) inorganic photovoltaics (OPVs) because of its low‐temperature solution processing peculiarity, high optical transmittance, and excellent mechanical flexibility. However, the core–shell structure of PSS coated PEDOT results in relatively low conductivity, work function, transmittance and waterproofness of PEDOT:PSS interlayer, limiting the photovoltaic performance and stability of OPVs. Here, the conformation of PEDOT chains are regulated from helical benzoyl to linear quinone structure via incorporation of 2D Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15dopant into the conventional PEDOT:PSS interlayer, promoting an interpenetrating network structure in PEDOT:PSS interlayer and forming an efficient hole transport channel from active layer to ITO electrode. Such features significantly improve the electrical conductivity, work function, and transmittance of PEDOT:PSS interlayer. In consequence, the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of D18:L8‐BO, PBDB‐T:ITIC, as well as PTzBI‐dF:L8‐BO based OPVs ameliorated from 18.37%, 8.94%, and 15.80% to 19.26%, 10.00%, and 16.83%, respectively. The application of Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15 doping PEDOT:PSS strategy demonstrates great potential for the development of strongly conductive, large‐work‐function, highly transparent, and excellent‐waterproof PEDOT:PSS interlayer toward highly efficient and stable OPVs.

Solution-Processable PEDOT:PSS:α-In2Se3 with Enhanced Conductivity as a Hole Transport Layer for High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have attracted significant attention in photovoltaic devices in recent years owing to their outstanding photoelectric properties. Herein, 2D α-In2Se3 nanosheets with high conductivity and suitable work function are synthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation method. To ameliorate the low conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (2.21 × 10-3 S cm-1), α-In2Se3 nanosheets are directly added into PEDOT:PSS to obtain the PEDOT:PSS:α-In2Se3 composite film. The composite film exhibits excellent optical transmittance, suitable work function, and enhanced conductivity (1.54 × 10-2 S cm-1). To profoundly investigate the mechanism of conductivity improvement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and atomic force microscopy are conducted. The results show that the synergistic effect of 2D α-In2Se3 nanosheets and isopropyl alcohol/deionized water cosolvent screens the Coulombic attraction among PEDOT and PSS. The screening effect results in the partial removal of PSS and the benzoid-quinoid transition of PEDOT. In addition, α-In2Se3 nanosheets may serve as physical linkers for PEDOT chains. Both these effects are beneficial to increase the interfacial contact area between PEDOT chains and form a larger conductive network of PEDOT, leading to an enhanced conductivity. The composite film is first employed as a hole transport layer (HTL) in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the poly[2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene)-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione)] (PBDB-T):3,9-bis(2-methylene(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)dithieno-[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC)-based device with composite HTL is 10% higher than that of the unmodified PBDB-T:ITIC-based device, and the maximum PCE of 15.89% is achieved in the (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PM6):(2,2'-((2Z,2Z)-((12,13-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,9-diundecyl-12,13-dihydro-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-e]thieno[2,″3″:4',50]thieno[2',3':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-g]thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole-2,10-diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile) (Y6) system. More interestingly, the stability of devices with composite HTL is improved owing to the partial removal of PSS. Thus, the PEDOT:PSS:α-In2Se3 composite can be a potential HTL material in PSCs.
