Abstract:The properties of hole transport layers (HTL) greatly affect the performance of inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSC). To understand the mechanisms involved, solvent treatments to HTL poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) by DMSO, ethanol, ethanol:10 vol% DMSO, DMF and acetonitrile were performed when fabricating the PSC devices. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Xray diffraction (XRD) results show that the crystal size of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) increased after solvent treatment to PEDOT: PSS. MAPbI(3) film with a uniform crystal size and smooth surface was obtained when being deposited on top of PEDOT: PSS that has been modified with solvent with a strong coordination ability. In the other cases, crystal size homogeneity and surface roughness of the MAPbI(3) film was worse. The improved surface roughness and crystal size homogeneity of the MAPbI(3) film enhanced the short circuit current (J(sc)), and therefore the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSC. It was found that both the stability of the intermediate phase MAI-DMSO-PbI2, which is related to the coordination ability of the solvent molecules, and the morphology of PEDOT: PSS film, influenced the morphology of the CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) film. Our findings provide the basis for better controlling the morphology of MAPbI(3) films in inverted planar heterojunction PSC.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most widely used hole transport layers (HTL) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its simple solution-processed ability, high transparency, and conductivity. However, PEDOT:PSS-based devices suffer a lower open-circuit voltage (Voc) than devices with the conventional structure. To address this issue, we fabricated ammonia-modified PEDOT:PSS films by simply doping PEDOT:PSS solution with different ratio of ammonia. The acidity of PEDOT:PSS can be neutralized by the doped ammonia, which inhibits the ion-exchange reaction between PSS-H and CH3NH3I, thus retarding the reduction of the work function for PEDOT:PSS to some extent. As a result, a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.5% was obtained for the device based on the ammonia-doped PEDOT:PSS HTL than that of the pristine PEDOT:PSS-based device. We ascribe the PCE enhancement to the increased Voc and fill factor (FF), which is attributed not only to the better energy-level alignment between the ammonia-modified PEDOT:PSS film and perovskite layer but also to the increased grain size and crystallinity of perovskite film.

Abstract:Solvent treatment has been widely used to improve the device performance of both Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Polymer Solar Cells (PSCs). One of the proposed mechanisms is the modification of the buried PEDOT:PSS layer underneath the organic active layer by the permeating solvent. By measuring the lateral electric conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS layer, the 3 orders of magnitude's enhancement on the conductivity after solvent treatment confirms that the solvent permeates through the top organic active layer and modifies the PEDOT:PSS layer. Using a “peel-off” method, the buried PEDOT:PSS layer is fully exposed and studied by UV–vis spectra, XPS spectra, and c-AFM images. The data suggest that the permeating solvent dissolves PSS, changes PEDOT:PSS′ core-shell structure into a linear/coiled structure, and moves PSS from the bulk to the surface. As a result, PEDOT becomes more continuous in the bulk. The continuous conducting PEDOT-rich domains create percolating pathways for the current which significantly improve electric conductivity.

Abstract:Interface engineering is an efficient method for improving the performance of inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this paper, the PSCs were modified by introducing mild argon plasma post-treatment on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS). The power conversion efficiency (PCE) was enhanced up to 12.17%, compared with 9.55% of the reference device without interlayer modification. We found that argon plasma treatment on the PEDOT: PSS layer effectively increases its conductivity due to the modification of the PSS ratio in the film. The argon plasma treatment time directly affects the surface morphologies and contact angles of the PEDOT: PSS layer and therefore optimises the uniformity of the PEDOT: PSS layer on the nanometer-scale. The improvement in the chemical compositions and film morphologies of PEDOT: PSS could be beneficial to enhancing the wettability and retarding the carrier recombination. The open-circuit voltage (V-oc) and short circuit current density (J(sc)) of PSCs based on the treated PEDOT: PSS were both improved, resulting in the enhancement of PCE.

Abstract:Although the electrical performance of inverted PSCs is a bit lower than that of conventional PSCs at present, it has attracted increasing research attention thanks to its simple architecture for low preparation temperature and negligible hysteresis, and subsequently a high opportunity for industrial application. In general, PEDOT:PSS is employed to serve as hole transport layer (HTL) in inverted PSCs due to its high conductivity, high light transmittance, and aqueous dispersion. However, the mismatch of energy level between PEDOT:PSS and ITO is detrimental to extract the photo-induced holes, hampering further enhancement of the electrical performance of inverted PSCs. Here, a LiF anode buffer layer, whose optimization thickness is 7 nm, has been employed to modify the PEDOT:PSS HTL in inverted PSCs. Thanks to the LiF anode buffer layer, a dramatically enhancement of PCE from 16.01% of reference sample with pristine PEDOT:PSS to 18.18% of PSCs with LiF/PEDOT: PSS HTL. This enhancement is mainly ascribed to improve the charge extraction ability due to the diople effect of LiF. Therefore, this work provides a simple and effective method to increase the electrical performance of inverted PSCs.

Abstract:Solvent treatment was discovered as an efficient anode modification approach to improve the performance of polymer light-emitting diodes. By simply spin-coating several drops of the polar solvent on top of the PEDOT:PSS hole injection layer, the maximum luminance efficiency was increased by as much as 83% without sacrificing the operation voltage. The combination effects of the reduced work function and the lowered resistivity of PEDOT:PSS film, decreased the hole leakage current, leading to a more balanced charge density inside the emission layer, thereby enhancing the device performance.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been attracting tremendous attention due to ease of processing, flexibility, and high performance. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) are the two most widely used solvents to dissolve perovskite precursors. Here, we investigate the impact of residual amount and evaporation rate of the DMSO inside the precursor films on the microstructure of the ultimate perovskite films. We decouple the DMSO and DMF solvents and demonstrate that DMSO component exhibits great and dominant influence on the final film morphology by using quasi in-situ photoluminescence (PL) measurement and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization of the wet films after spin-coating. Much more smooth and uniform perovskite films are obtained by careful management of remanent solvent, including decreasing residual amount by shelving the precursor films prior to heating and retarding the evaporation of the solvent via adopting a gradient annealing (GA) process. In consequence, the as-prepared PEDOT: PSS-based inverted PSCs yield a champion efficiency of 15.59% with high reproducibility. This work shows great potential in preparing high-quality perovskite films through a simple remanent solvent management engineering.

Low Boiling-point Solvents Treatment of PEDOT∶PSS Film for Optimized Photovoltaic Cell Performance

Abstract:As a popular hole transport material,poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)has been widely used in variety of optoelectronic devices. High boiling-point solvents were usually added into PEDOT:PSS solutions to enhance its conductivity,but simultaneously resulted in evident leakage current due to solvent residue. However,low boiling-point solvents,which are more easily removed,have not been effectively utilized. In this study,we found that the performance of the corresponding poly(3-hexy-thiophene)(P3HT):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester(PC61BM)polymer solar cells(PSCs)was improved without increasing the leak-age current after low boiling-point solvent treatment of PEDOT:PSS films by dripping isopropanol,ethanol or acetone then spin-coating. Especially,after the isopropanol treatment,the short-circuit current density of PSC increased from 8. 15 mA/cm2 to 9. 17 mA/cm2,and the power conversion efficiency reached 3. 5％,an 18. 6％ enhancement compared to the control device. The analysis revealed that the solvent-treated PEDOT:PSS films demonstrated dif-fetent surface morphology,enhanced light transmission,and improved electrical conductivity due to the phase sepa-ration between PEDOT and PSS chains. Meanwhile,the hole transport capability of PEDOT:PSS increased after treatment,especially after the isopropanol treatment. These results suggested that low boiling-point solvents could be effectively utilized by this method and improved the optoelectronic properties of the PEDOT:PSS film.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is employed as the hole transport material in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its good conductivity, uniform film formation, and low energy consumption. However, the presence of sulfonic acid groups in the PSS chains of PEDOT:PSS makes the solution acidic. Moreover, PEDOT:PSS as a hole transport layer (HTL) exhibits hygroscopicity and anisotropy, which can reduce the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability of PSCs. Here, we employed arginine as an additive in the PEDOT:PSS solution to adjust the pH value of the PEDOT:PSS solution from 3.7 to 6.8. By incorporating arginine, the open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of the PSCs increased from 0.92 V to 1.08 V, and the PCE improved from 15.06% to 17.35%. The enhancement of performance is attributed to the interaction between the amino groups in arginine and the sulfonic acid groups in the PSS chains, which reduces the acidity and surface roughness of PEDOT:PSS. This modification decreases the contact barrier between the perovskite layer and the HTL, enhances charge collection and transport capabilities, and thereby improves the PCE and long-term stability of the inverted PSCs. This study provides a new approach for the industrialization of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:PEDOT:PSS is one of the most frequently used hole transporting layer (HTL) for solution-processed optoelectronic devices, but seems unsuccessful in high-performance lead based perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) due to the high open-circuit voltage (V-OC) loss as induced by the improper interfacial chemical interactions, i.e. the coordination between sulfonic group and Pb2+. To address this issue, we change this chemical interaction by incorporating potassium citrate (PC) into the PEDOT:PSS film. The PC modification significantly improves the PL intensity by nearly one order of magnitude, verifying the strong passivation effect. Accordingly, the V-OC loss of MAPbI(3) based inverted PVSCs is dramatically reduced by 0.23 eV, and the device performance is improved from 16.31% to 19.66%, which is among the highest PVSCs with PEDOT:PSS as HTL. Interestingly, we find the energy level alignment plays a negligible role in determining the device performance of PVSCs, while the change of interfacial chemical interaction induced passivation effect contributes to the improved device performance of PVSCs. We further unveil that the passivation effect of PC is attributed to the synergistic effect of K+ and citrate group. Our work stresses the importance of tuning the interfacial interactions, and should have implication for developing high-performance PVSCs.

Abstract:Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have drawn growing research attention owing to their inherent merits of low-temperature manufacturing, reduced hysteresis effects, and promising industrial prospects. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a favorite hole transport material in inverted PSCs because of its solubility, excellent conductivity, and exceptional optical transparency. However, the mismatch of the energy level between PEDOT:PSS and perovskite limits the further improvement of device performance. Here, we proposed a simple method to reduce this energy level mismatch by doping the appropriate concentration of sodium stearate (NaSt) into PEDOT:PSS solution. Our results show that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increases from 19.69% of the reference device employing pristine PEDOT:PSS as a hole transport layer (HTL) to 21.77% of the target device with 4 μg/mL NaSt-doped PEDOT:PSS HTL. The significant improvement of PCE mainly originates from the fine-tuning of the energy level of PEDOT:PSS by the NaSt dopant, which is helpful to align it more harmoniously with the perovskite layer and facilitates efficient charge transport. Thus, our study presents a simple and effective method to adjust the PEDOT:PSS HTL, which is beneficial for improving the photovoltaic performance of inverted PSCs.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) shows great potential for applications in inverted tin halide perovskite solar cells (TPSCs). Nevertheless, the physicochemical, electrical properties and surface characteristics of the pristine PEDOT:PSS are difficult for high-quality tin halide perovskite films, as well as for carrier transport. In this work, we tuned the phase separation of PEDOT and PSS chains by ammonium carbamate (AC) to effectively adjust the surface morphology and electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS film. The modified film showed lower trap density and facilitated carrier transport ability than the pristine film. Consequently, the target TPSC devices achieved a substantially improved short-circuit photocurrent (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc), together with a markedly improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 9.48% to 11.24%.

Abstract:Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with PEDOT:PSS as hole transporting layers exhibit tremendous prospects for flexible photovoltaic applications owing to their characteristics of low-temperature solution processability and favorable flexibility. Nevertheless, the energy level mismatch of PEDOT:PSS and perovskite layer results in a severe energy deficit. In addition, the acidity of PEDOT:PSS is detrimental to the stability of devices. To address these issues, we employ a glyceryl monostearate (GMS) interlayer to improve the work function and conductivity of PEDOT:PSS. Meanwhile, it can passivate the traps at the interface of PEDOT:PSS/perovskite. As a consequence, the champion power conversion efficiencies of photovoltaic devices based on MAPbI3 films increase from 14.82% to 17.29% due to the surface modification of PEDOT:PSS with GMS, which is mainly ascribed to the enhanced open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density. Abstract:Highly efficient organic-inorganic hybrid planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells with an architecture of indium tin oxide (ITO)/PEDOT:PSS-NH2-OH/CH3NH3PbI3/PCBM/Al are fabricated via one-step, solution process by employing the dopamine modified PEDOT:PSS (PEDOT:PSS-NH2-OH) as the hole transport layer, of which the power conversion efficiency of 15.34% is achieved with negligible hysteresis regardless of different scanning directions and scanning speeds. The average efficiency of twenty devices with PEDOT:PSS-NH2-OH is increased to 14.16% from 10.67% with PEDOT:PSS, and the former devices exhibit good reproducibility with small standard deviations. Cyclic voltammetry results show that the highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of PEDOT:PSS-NH2-OH (5.32 eV) matches well with the valence band of CH3NH3PbI3 absorbers (5.4 eV). Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the CH3NH3PbI3 film deposited on PEDOT:PSS-NH2-OH has strong charge extraction capability than that on PEDOT:PSS. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results suggest that the photovoltaic devices exhibit efficient hole transport and excellent electron blocking employing PEDOT:PSS-NH2-OH as the hole transport layer, as well as have low series, contact resistance and large recombination resistance. The research demonstrates that the stable semiquinone and amine radical modified PEDOT:PSS can acts as an outstanding hole transport material for fabricating high-efficient perovskite solar cells.

Herein, anode interface engineering with an excellent compatible bilayer of poly(3,4‐ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfo‐nate)/poly(3,4‐ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT:PSS/PEDOT) doped with grafted sulfonated‐acetone–formaldehyde lignin (PEDOT:GSL) via a low‐temperature and water‐soluble process is presented. As a water‐processable interface material, PEDOT:GSL exhibits higher conductivity, as well as better structural and electronic homogeneities compared with PEDTO:PSS. Consequently, the PEDOT:PSS/PEDOT:GSL bilayer with tuned energy level, optical properties, and the combination of the trap passivation of GSL at the anode/perovskite interface can greatly improve charge extraction ability and reduce the interface recombination. Simultaneously, the homogeneous perovskite film is fabricated through optimizing the annealing process. The device with the power conversion efficiency up to 17.80% is achieved, with 32.6% improvement compared to PEDOT:PSS‐only device (13.42%). Our success to achieve high‐performance inverted PVSCs provides new understanding of PEDOT:PSS, and also new guidelines for anode interface engineering to further advancement of PVSCs. This promising approach paves the way to realize solution processable highly efficient PVSCs for potential practical applications.
Boosting Performance of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells by Diluting Hole Transport Layer

Abstract:In our study, by developing the diluted PEDOT:PSS (D-PEDOT:PSS) to replace PEDOT:PSS stock solution as hole transport layer (HTL) materials for fabricating the inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the performance of developed device with ITO/D-PEDOT:PSS/MAPbI3−xClx/C60/BCP/Ag structure is enhanced distinctly. Experimental results reveal that when the dilution ratio is 10:1, the optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the D-PEDOT:PSS device can reach up to 17.85% with an increase of 11.28% compared to the undiluted PEDOT:PSS device. A series of investigations have confirmed that the efficiency improvement is mainly attributed to the two aspects: on one hand, the transmittance and conductivity of D-PEDOT:PSS HTL are improved, and the density of defect states at the interface is reduced after dilution, promoting the separation and transmission of charges, thus the short-circuit current (JSC) is significantly increased; on the other hand, the work function of D-PEDOT:PSS becomes more consistent with perovskite layer, and the voltage loss is reduced, so that the higher open circuit voltage (VOC) is obtained. Our research has indicated that diluting HTL develops a simpler, more efficient and cost-effective method to further improve performance for inverted PSCs.

Abstract:This work studied the doping of KSt in the PEDOT:PSS layer of devices ITO/K-PEDOT:PSS/perovskite/PCBM/BCP/Ag. The results showed that the doping of KSt improved the conductivity and charge transfer ability, thereby enhancing the PCE of inverted PSCs.

Abstract:One-step spin-coating solution deposition was reported as an excellent processing method in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Antisolvent treatment has been demonstrated to significantly enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs owing to the formation of high-quality perovskite crystals and passivation of defects. In this article, we alter different antisolvents in solution deposition process, i.e., chlorobenzene, toluene, and diethyl ether, combined with different measurements of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, time-resolved photoluminescence, and UV-vis absorption spectrum (UV-vis) to investigate the evolution of perovskite thin films. These results illustrate that a smooth and compact perovskite layer by antisolvent treatment is beneficial to enhancing device performance. A high coverage, large crystal size and smooth Cs$_{0.85}$PbI$_{3}$ thin film with a long carrier lifetime attained via antisolvent treatment is utilized to fabricate an inverted planar heterojunction solar cell, which exhibits PCE more than 15%.

Abstract:We demonstrate an environment-friendly solvent treatment that leads to a dramatic performance improvement of perovskite solar cells, with power conversion efficiency as high as 18%, with good stability. The solvent not only improves perovskite film morphology and crystallinity, but also, at proper growth conditions, leads to the formation of a self-induced textured structure on a dense layer; this increases the interface area between the perovskite active layer and the hole transport layer and thus improves photo generated current density. These results may open a new path to low-cost and high efficiency perovskite solar cells. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America
