Abstract:Inspired by the importance of the phenolic group to the electron transporting property of hole transport materials, phenolic hydroxyl groups were introduced in lignosulfonate (LS) via the alkyl chain bridging method to prepare phenolated-lignosulfonate (PLS). The results showed that the phenolic group was boosted from 0.81 mmol·g −1 of LS to 1.19 mmol·g −1 of PLS. The electrochemical property results showed two oxidation peaks in the cyclic voltammogram (CV) curve of PLS, and the oxidation potential of the PLS-modified electrode decreased by 0.5 eV compared with that of LS. This result indicates that PLS is more easily oxidized than LS. Based on the excellent electron transporting property of PLS, PLS was applied as a dopant in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT, called PEDOT:PLSs). PLS showed excellent dispersion properties for PEDOT. Moreover, the transmittance measurement results showed that the transmittance of PEDOT:PLSs exceeded 85% in the range of 300–800 nm. The CV results showed that the energy levels of PEDOT:PLSs could be flexibly adjusted by PLS amounts. The results indicate that the phenolic hydroxyl group of lignin can be easily boosted by the alkyl chain bridging method, and phenolated lignin-based polymers may have promising potential as dopants of PEDOT to produce hole transporting materials for different organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:In this work, we developed WS2 nanosheets (WS2 NS) doped into PEDOT:PSS (PEDOT:PSS/WS2 NS) as an efficient hole transport layer (HTL) for organic solar cells (OSCs). WS2 NS is obtained by a simple and cost-effective liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method. The results show that the PEDOT:PSS:WS2 NS anode interlayer has higher work function, reduced roughness and improved hole mobility. The devices based on PEDOT:PSS:WS2 NS interlayer show enhanced extraction and transportation of holes and improved fill factor and short-circuit current density. Based on PM6:Y6, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 14.35% to 15.67% after WS2 NS doping.

Abstract:Although PEDOT:PSS is the most prominently used conducting polymer as hole transporting layer (HTL) material in organic solar cells (OSCs), the strong acidity of PEDOT:PSS has been proved to cause corrosion on electrodes, which is largely responsible for device instability. At present, the development of a non‐corrosive and stable PEDOT with comparable performance to PEDOT:PSS remains a great challenge in the field. Herein, a solid n‐PEDOT:POM powder with neutral pH is synthesized by utilizing polyoxometalate (POM) as an oxidizing reagent, which exhibits excellent water solubility, high chemical stability, and superior hole collection ability. Impressively, an amazing fill factor of 0.80 along with a photovoltaic efficiency of 17.62% is obtained in the OSC by using n‐PEDOT:POM as the HTL, suggesting an exceptional hole collection ability for n‐PEDOT:POM. In addition, the neutral pH of PEDOT:PSS effectively improves the long‐term stability of OSCs. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that, compared to the electrode/PEDOT:PSS interface, the permeation of dissociative indium from the electrode to n‐PEDOT:POM can be greatly retarded, which proves the non‐corrosive effect of n‐PEDOT:POM and its improvement of device stability. The successful preparation of a non‐corrosive and stable PEDOT derivative without sacrificing its hole collection ability provides the most fruitful new insight into developing high‐performance HTL materials. A solid n‐PEDOT:POM powder with neutral pH is synthesized by utilizing polyoxometalate as an oxidizing reagent, which exhibits excellent water solubility, high chemical stability and superior hole collection ability. Abstract:At present, PEDOT:PSS and MoO3 are the most widely used hole transport layer (HTL) in organic solar cells (OSCs); however, some drawbacks still limit their practical use. In this study, we developed a facile method to enhance the conductivity of a polyoxometalate-based inorganic cluster (PIC) without sacrificing its high work function nature. An inorganic cluster HPMO:Sn with excellent hole collection ability was prepared and used as an HTL in an OSC achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.3%. To the best of our knowledge, the photovoltaic performances are among the best devices reported in the field. Moreover, HPMO:Sn possesses the merits of a definite and stable chemical structure and is low cost, and HPMO:Sn can be easily prepared without any post-treatment. Besides, we prove that the HPMO:Sn HTL is very compatible with blade coating, i.e., an OSC of 1.0 cm2 was fabricated using a blade-coated HPMO:Sn film to attain an efficiency of 15.1%.

Solution-Processable PEDOT:PSS:α-In2Se3 with Enhanced Conductivity as a Hole Transport Layer for High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have attracted significant attention in photovoltaic devices in recent years owing to their outstanding photoelectric properties. Herein, 2D α-In2Se3 nanosheets with high conductivity and suitable work function are synthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation method. To ameliorate the low conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (2.21 × 10-3 S cm-1), α-In2Se3 nanosheets are directly added into PEDOT:PSS to obtain the PEDOT:PSS:α-In2Se3 composite film. The composite film exhibits excellent optical transmittance, suitable work function, and enhanced conductivity (1.54 × 10-2 S cm-1). To profoundly investigate the mechanism of conductivity improvement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and atomic force microscopy are conducted. The results show that the synergistic effect of 2D α-In2Se3 nanosheets and isopropyl alcohol/deionized water cosolvent screens the Coulombic attraction among PEDOT and PSS. The screening effect results in the partial removal of PSS and the benzoid-quinoid transition of PEDOT. In addition, α-In2Se3 nanosheets may serve as physical linkers for PEDOT chains. Both these effects are beneficial to increase the interfacial contact area between PEDOT chains and form a larger conductive network of PEDOT, leading to an enhanced conductivity. The composite film is first employed as a hole transport layer (HTL) in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the poly[2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene)-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione)] (PBDB-T):3,9-bis(2-methylene(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)dithieno-[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC)-based device with composite HTL is 10% higher than that of the unmodified PBDB-T:ITIC-based device, and the maximum PCE of 15.89% is achieved in the (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PM6):(2,2'-((2Z,2Z)-((12,13-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,9-diundecyl-12,13-dihydro-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-e]thieno[2,″3″:4',50]thieno[2',3':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-g]thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole-2,10-diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile) (Y6) system. More interestingly, the stability of devices with composite HTL is improved owing to the partial removal of PSS. Thus, the PEDOT:PSS:α-In2Se3 composite can be a potential HTL material in PSCs.

Abstract:Amine functionalized carbon dots are doped into the hole transport layer (HTL) of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene‐sulfonate), improving its conductivity and maintaining good work function. The afforded organic solar cells with this doped HTL exhibit enhanced power conversion efficiency due to improved charge extraction ability. The hole transport layer (HTL) is an important component in organic solar cells (OSCs). As a commonly used HTL, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene‐sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) in OSCs generally exhibits relatively low conductivity, hindering device performance improvement. Herein, amine‐functionalized carbon dots (CDs‐N) are introduced as dopants of PEDOT:PSS, which can effectively enhance the HTL conductivity while maintaining a similar work function. The PEDOT:PSS+CDs‐N devices exhibit higher power conversion efficiencies due to the improved charge extraction ability. It is found that the larger conjugated backbones of CDs‐N and the amine functional groups interacting with PSS are keys for such optimization. This work illustrates the potential of CDs for the applications on interface layers in OSCs.

Electrochemically Engineered Lanthanum Nickelate as a Promising Transparent Hole-Transport Layer for Bulk Heterojunction Polymer Solar Cells: An Experimental and DFT Study

Abstract:Lanthanum nickelate (LNO) was grown on an FTO-coated glass slide by employing the chronoamperometry method and used as a hole transport layer (HTL) in bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells (BHJ PSCs). The electrodeposition parameters, including the deposition time, potential magnitude, and electrolyte conditions, were changed to obtain LNO thin films, providing appropriate energy levels as an HTL. The electrochemical, morphological, optical, and structural characteristics of electrochemically produced LNO samples were compared to those of the sample prepared via the sol–gel procedure. The LNO sample prepared by applying −1.18 V while the electrolyte was stirring exhibited significantly better electrochemical and optical properties. The fabricated PSC using this sample provided a considerably higher (45.3%) power conversion efficiency (PCE) than the PSC prepared based on an LNO thin film acquired by the sol–gel method. The superior performance of the BHJ PSC was ascribed to the increased electroactive surface area (1.341 cm2), improved charge mobility (2.30 × 10–6 cm2 V–1 s–1), and reduced charge recombination probabilities. A short circuit current of 13.24 mA cm2, an open circuit voltage of approximately 0.64 V, a fill factor of 70%, an external quantum efficiency of 75.3%, and a PCE of 5.9% were demonstrated by the best fabricated PSC, surpassing the reference device with a PEDOT:PSS HTL. Moreover, the prepared PSC exhibited remarkable ambient stability, maintaining 84% of its initial PCE after 450 h of aging. The agreement between DFT calculations and experimental results confirmed that LNO possesses the optical and elastic characteristics required to improve the efficiency and stability of PSCs as an HTL.

Abstract:Ultrathin polythiophene films prepared via electrochemical polymerization is successfully used as the hole-transporting material, substituting conventional HTM-PEDOT:PSS, in planar p-i-n CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite-based solar cells, affording a series of ITO/polythiophene/CH3NH3PbI3/C60/BCP/Ag devices. The ultrathin polythiophene film possesses good transmittance, high conductivity, a smooth surface, high wettability, compatibility with PbI2 DMF solution, and an energy level matching that of the CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite material. A promising power conversion efficiency of about 15.4%, featuring a high fill factor of 0.774, open voltage of 0.99 V, and short-circuit current density of 20.3 mA·cm−2 is obtained. The overall performance of the devices is superior to that of cells using PEDOT:PSS. The differences of solar cells with different hole-transfer materials in charge recombination, charge transport and transfer, and device stability are further investigated and demonstrate that polythiophene is a more effective and promising hole-transporting material. This work provides a simple, prompt, controllable, and economic approach for the preparation of an effective hole-transporting material, which undoubtedly offers an alternative method in the future industrial production of perovskite solar cells.
Printable and Homogeneous NiO x Hole Transport Layers Prepared by a Polymer‐Network Gel Method for Large‐Area and Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:As one of the most promising hole transport layers (HTLs), nickel oxide (NiOx) has received extensive attention due to its application in flexible large-area perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the poor interface contact caused by inherent easy-agglomeration phenomenon of NiOx nanoparticles (NPs) is still the bottleneck for achieving high-performance devices. Herein, a general strategy to synthesize NiOx NPs with high crystallinity and good dispersibility via the polymer network micro-precipitation method is reported. Promisingly, this approach realizes the flow-division of precipitant and the restraint of the NPs motion, thereby effectively alleviating the coagulation phenomenon caused by excessive local concentration and secondary movement adsorption. Furthermore, the addition of ionic liquid not only inhibits the secondary aggregation of NiOx NPs during the dispersion process, but also significantly enhances the properties of the colloidal solution. Ultimately, the 1.01 cm2 PSCs based on the optimized NiOx HTLs achieve the champion power conversion efficiency of 20.91% and 19.17% on rigid and flexible substrates, respectively. Moreover, the reproducibility and stability of PSCs are also significantly improved, especially for flexible devices. Overall, this strategy provides the possibility for flexible, large-area fabrication of high-quality NiOx HTLs to promote the development of stable and efficient perovskite devices.

Tuning hole charge collection efficiency in polymer photovoltaics by optimizing the work function of indium tin oxide electrodes with solution-processed LiF nanoparticles

Abstract:AbstractBy varying the density of solution-processed lithium fluoride (sol-LiF) nanoparticles at the interface between tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), we have demonstrated that the electronic hole collection efficiency of an organic photovoltaic cell can be optimized through tuning the energy level alignment at the ITO/PEDOT:PSS interface. We synthesized the LiF nanoparticles in solution and deposited them onto ITO electrodes with increasing surface coverage up to 13.2 %. The surface work function of the nanostructured ITO increased linearly from 4.88 to 5.30 eV. When the sol-LiF-modified ITO electrodes were incorporated into polymer solar cells based on a bulk heterojunction of poly(3-hexylthiophene) polymer and methanofullerene, a maximum power conversion efficiency was recorded for a device with an ITO anode modified by 5.3 % of sol-LiF coverage, which corresponded to a measured work function of 5.07 eV. The improvement in short circuit current density by 87 % and power conversion efficiency by 74.3 % suggest that the sol-LiF interlayer density enabled work function tuning of the ITO anode to better match the highest occupied molecular orbital level of PEDOT:PSS, facilitating hole charge collection. The increase in electronic hole collection efficiency is attributed to both a lowered resistance at the ITO modified by sol-LiF and faster hole transport, although these gains are offset by an associated increase in contact polarization. Our findings suggest that the surface work function of ITO can be tuned to improve energy level alignment with other contact layers via the surface density of sol-LiF particles. More efficient hole transport, due to higher recombination resistance, offset by an increased charge extraction barrier presented by contact polarization; the two effects combined give rise to an optimum in sol-LiF nanostructuring of the ITO surface properties.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved rapid progress, with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 19% based on conventional device configuration, in which PEDOT:PSS is the most commonly used hole transport layer (HTL). However, the use of PEDOT:PSS is problematic for the longevity of OSCs due to its hygroscopic and acidic nature. Herein, we have developed an alternative HTL by employing a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of phosphate to functionalize solution-processed nickel oxide (NiOx) thin films, which are prevailing HTLs in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells. As revealed by a combination of measurements, this SAM-modification can not only optimize band alignment by manipulating the work function of NiOx films, but also suppress charge recombination by passivating surface traps on NiOx films. With enhanced hole extraction efficiency and electron blocking ability, an impressive PCE of 16.7% is achieved in PM6:Y6-based OSCs with excellent reproducibility. Importantly, the optimized NiOx-based OSCs exhibit both superior stability and higher PCE than the PEDOT:PSS-based counterparts. This study provides a facile method for modifying NiOx to replace PEDOT:PSS as a reliable HTL for highly efficient and stable OSCs. 2PACz -modified NiOx thin films successfully replace PEDOT:PSS as hole transport layers, and achieve a high PCE of 16.7% in the PM6:Y6-based organic solar cells with simultaneous enhancement of efficiency, stability and reproducibility.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) has been the most popular conductive polymer as a hole transport material in organic solar cells (OSCs). Modification of PEDOT: PSS can improve its various properties to realize high performance in OSCs. The conductivity of PEDOT: PSS is an essential factor in determining device performance. In this work, PEDOT: PSS-BA, PEDOT: PSS-HA, and PEDOT: PSS-OA are prepared via facile doping of corresponding alkyl diamines into PEDOT: PSS, considering the amino ion can interact with redundant sulfonic acid groups of PSS. All the modified products exhibit enhanced conductivities due to their more ordered molecular packing comparing PEDOT: PSS. Using PTQ10 and m-BTP-PhC6 as the binary active layer, the OSC devices based on PEDOT: PSS-BA yield a superior power conversion efficiency of 18.44%, which ranks as one of the highest values in the binary OSCs.

Abstract:Interfacial buffer layers have a decisive impact on the performance and stability of organic solar cells. This review summarizes representative hole transporting materials, including organics, graphene‐based molecules, and transition metal oxides, in an attempt to highlight the role of hole transport layers in regulating charge transport, tuning energy levels, reducing potential barriers, and reducing interfacial recombination losses. Recently, organic solar cells (OSCs) have received rapid boosts in the power conversion efficiency (PCE), due to progresses in materials and device engineering. Several groups have reported champion PCEs over 19% in single‐junction, ternary, and tandem OSCs. In addition to the concentrated focus on the new design of OSC active materials, buffer layer materials, used for the interface layer providing the functionalities of interface charge transport and collection in OSCs, are of critical importance for the optimization of PCE. Compared with the electron transport layers (ETL), the hole transport layers (HTLs) have received less attention and are still dominated by the commercial material poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), which has limitations for the efficiency and OSC device stability enhancement. In this Review, the recent progress in HTL materials, including the modifications for PEDOT:PSS, alternative HTL materials based on polymers and inorganic oxide materials, etc, is summarized. This review also provides a summative prospect aiming to help scientists apprehend the current possibilities and challenges in this field.

A Dopant-Free Organic Hole Transport Material For Efficient Planar Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:We demonstrate efficient planar perovskite solar cells using a dopant-free donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated small molecule as a hole transport material. The photovoltaic cell reaches a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.9%, which is comparable to or even better than that of the devices using the traditional doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N, N'-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) hole transport material under equivalent conditions. We ascribe the high performance to the excellent charge transporting properties of the D-A conjugated small molecule. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL), transient photocurrent response, and impedance spectroscopy characterization indicate that this D-A conjugated small molecule plays a key role in hole collection and extraction in perovskite based photovoltaic devices. The dopant-free D-A small molecule hole transport material used here not only improves the efficiency, but also facilitates the fabrication process and thus potentially reduces the fabrication cost of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The traditional hole transport material (HTM) PEDOT: PSS is a bottleneck for long‐term stability in Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This work offers an alternative means toward efficient and stable Sn–Pb PSCs using a new multi‐functional HTM Silole‐COOH, demonstrating 23.2%‐efficient single‐junction Sn–Pb PSCs, 25.8%‐efficient all‐perovskite tandems while avoiding the stability concerns associated with PEDOT: PSS. Despite high theoretical efficiencies and rapid improvements in performance, high‐efficiency ≈1.2 eV mixed Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs) generally rely on poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) as the hole transport layer (HTL); a material that is considered to be a bottleneck for long‐term stability due to its acidity and hygroscopic nature. Seeking to replace PEDOT: PSS with an alternative HTL with improved atmospheric and thermal stability, herein, a silole derivative (Silole‐COOH) tuned with optimal electronic properties and efficient carrier transport by incorporating a carboxyl functional group is designed, which results in an optimal band alignment for hole extraction from Sn–Pb perovskites and robust air and thermal stability. Thin films composed of the Silole‐COOH exhibit superior conductivity and carrier mobility compared to PEDOT: PSS, in addition to reduced nonradiative quasi‐Fermi‐level splitting losses at the HTL/perovskite interface and improved quality of Sn–Pb perovskite. Replacement of PEDOT: PSS with Silole‐COOH leads to 23.2%‐efficient single‐junction Sn–Pb PSCs, 25.8%‐efficient all‐perovskite tandems, and long operating stability in ambient air.

Abstract:Anode modification is vital for improving device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). PEDOT:PSS is the most widely applied hole transport layer (HTL) in OSCs. In this work, three kinds of modified HTLs, namely PEDOT:PSS‐PA, PEDOT:PSS‐TA, and PEDOT:PSS‐DA are readily prepared via simple doping of phenylethylamine derivatives into commercially available Al 4083, by modulating the number of hydroxyl groups on the adulterant molecules. All of them exhibit enhanced work functions (WFs) and conductivities. Matching with PM6:Y6 composed active layers, PEDOT:PSS‐TA based devices achieves the highest performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.10%, while the PM6:ITC‐2Cl system demonstrates a highest PCE of 14.17% in devices with PEDOT:PSS‐DA, and the optimal PCE of PM6:PIDTC‐T based OSCs is equal to 9.55% while the HTL is PEDOT:PSS‐PA. Further investigations reveal that the different adulterants formed various amount of hydrogen bonds in HTLs, inducing dissimilar interfacial morphology and mobility, and thus unidentical degrees of change in recombination. Afterwards, the doping strategy is extended to a newly proposed high‐performance system PM6:PY‐IT, and successfully drags its efficiency from 14.78% to 15.62%, another world‐class breakthrough for all‐polymer solar cells. In summary, this study not only achieves a series of OSCs with improved PCEs, but also delivers a deep understanding of PEDOT:PSS improvement.

Abstract:Conventional self-assembled monolayer (SAM) hole transporters in organic solar cells (OSCs) generally suffer from poor uniformity and limited thickness tolerance, hindering their large-scale production. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel polymeric hole transporter synthesized by polymerizing carbazole phosphonic acid (PACz). The resultant Poly-2PACz material exhibits exceptional conductivity, high tolerance for variations in layer thickness, and improved film uniformity compared with conventional SAMs. Consequently, the OSCs utilizing Poly-2PACz achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 19.1% and a high fill factor of 81.2%, surpassing the devices based on 2PACz. Moreover, Poly-2PACz-based OSCs demonstrate excellent operational stability, retaining over 80% of their initial efficiency after 1,400 h of continuous light exposure in ambient conditions. This work presents a novel strategy for designing hole transporters, paving the way for more efficient and stable OSCs.

Abstract:Hybrid organic inorganic halide perovskite based solar cells have achieved outstanding progress, approaching one of the most competitive photovoltaic technologies. One of the hot topics is to develop inexpensive and efficient hole transporting materials to improve the performance of devices for practical applications. In this paper, we theoretically design a series of hole transporting materials based on triphenylamine backbone through varying the spacer and the end substitution. The properties of frontier molecular orbital, ionization potential, reorganization energy, and charge mobility have been calculated and analyzed. The results show that the spacer and the end functional groups strongly influence the molecular geometry, stacking, electron density distribution, and especially hole mobility. The best hole transporting material with furan as spacer and hydroxyl or methoxyl as substitution is proposed due to its highest hole transporting mobility induced by the planar conformation and tight pi-pi stacking, which potentially could enable the highly efficient perovskite solar cells.
