Abstract:In this work, we report on an off-resonant four-wave mixing experiment via a ladder-type configuration in a hot rubidium atomic vapour. We find for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that the generated light is delayed compared with the reference. At the same time, the seeded signal beam is also delayed, though the delay time is not as so large as the one that the generated light has. Both delayed times can be adjusted experimentally by controlling the two-photon detuning. The experimental results are in good agreement with our theoretical predictions. Our results may be important for storing telecom-band photons.

Abstract:Slow light has been explored for building quantum networks, with particular interest in slowing the group velocity of single photons [1], and more recently exploited to enhance the measurement of small phase shifts. Generally, slow-light effects have been characterized as the net effect of a pulse propagating through the slow-light medium, i.e., as a pulse delay time $\Delta t$ measured with a fast photodiode at the output of the medium [2]. In this work, we use a single-photon imaging camera to observe slow light in situ, and thus provide a direct measurement of spatial pulse compression and temporal dispersion as the pulse travels through the slow light medium, in this case a hyperfine absorption doublet in hot Rb vapor. Our method combines light-in-flight imaging techniques with a camera comprised of an array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPAD camera) [3] to image the photons scattered by the Rb vapor in the direction of the camera as shown in Fig. 1(a). In addition, the single photon nature of the SPAD detector allows us to obtain a measurement of the single photon group velocity. As shown in Fig. 1(c) and (d), we observe a significant delay, on the order of nanoseconds, in the detection of the photons scattered when the pulse first enters the slow-light medium. This lag in scattered-photon arrival time is a direct visualization of the slowing down of the single-photon group velocity. The pulses used here had a temporal full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\tau\sim 1$ ns, with measured group velocities as low as $v_{g}\sim 0.006c$. At these low group velocities we observe a full fractional pulse delay of up to $FD=\Delta t/\tau\sim 40$ over 7 cm of propagation, and $FD\sim 5$ for the scattered single photons, which propagate through ∼ 1 cm of Rb vapor prior to exiting the cell en-route to the camera.

Abstract:Hybrid interfaces between distinct quantum systems play a major role in the implementation of quantum networks. Quantum states have to be stored in memories to synchronize the photon arrival times for entanglement swapping by projective measurements in quantum repeaters or for entanglement purification. Here, we analyze the distortion of a single photon wave packet propagating through a dispersive and absorptive medium with high spectral resolution. Single photons are generated from a single In(Ga)As quantum dot with its excitonic transition precisely set relative to the Cesium D1 transition. The delay of spectral components of the single photon wave packet with almost Fourier-limited width is investigated in detail with a 200 MHz narrow-band monolithic Fabry-Pérot resonator. Reflecting the excited state hyperfine structure of Cesium, "slow light" and "fast light" behavior is observed. As a step towards room-temperature alkali vapor memories, quantum dot photons are delayed for 5 ns by strong dispersion between the two 1.17 GHz hyperfine-split excited state transitions. Based on optical pumping on the hyperfine-split ground states, we propose a simple, all-optically controllable delay for synchronization of heralded narrow-band photons in a quantum network.

Ultrafast single-photon detection using nanophotonic parametric amplifiers

Abstract:Integrated photonic quantum information processing (QIP) has advanced rapidly due to progress in various nanophotonic platforms. Single photon detectors have been the subject of intense study due to their ubiquity in QIP systems, yet many state-of-the art detectors operate at cryogenic temperatures under vacuum and suffer from long dead times. We propose and demonstrate a single photon detection scheme based on optical parametric amplification in nanophotonic lithium niobate (LN) combined with a classical photodetector. We use quantum detector tomography and experimentally demonstrate an efficiency of 26.5% with a 2.2% dark count rate. We show that by improving the nonlinearity-to-loss ratio in nanophotonics and using homodyne detection on a squeezed pump, the detector can achieve 69% efficiency with 0.9% dark count rate. The detector operates at room temperature, has no intrinsic dead time, and is readily integrated in LN nanophotonics, in which many other components of photonic QIP are available. Our results represent a step towards all-optical ultrafast photon detection for scalable nanophotonic QIP.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to generate optically-controlled delays based on off-resonant Raman absorption. Dispersion in a transparency window between two neighboring, optically-activated Raman absorption lines is used to reduce the group velocity of broadband 765 nm pulses. We implement this approach in a potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) waveguide at room temperature, and demonstrate Raman-induced delays of up to 140 fs for a 650-fs duration, 1.8-THz bandwidth, signal pulse; the available delay-bandwidth product is $\approx1$. Our approach is applicable to single photon signals, offers wavelength tunability, and is a step toward processing ultrafast photons.

Abstract:We present a microresonator-based system capable of simultaneously producing time-advanced and time-delayed pulses. The effect is based on the combination of a sharp spectral feature with two orthogonally-polarized propagating waveguide modes. We include an experimental proof-of-concept implementation using a silica microsphere coupled to a tapered optical fiber and use a time-domain picture to interpret the observed delays. We also discuss potential applications for future all-optical networks.

Abstract:Over the past years, there have been many efforts towards generating interactions between two optical beams so strong that they could be observed at the level of individual photons. Such strong interactions, beyond opening up a new regime in optics, could lead to technologies such as all-optical quantum information processing. However, the extreme weakness of photon-photon scattering has hindered any attempt to observe such interactions at the level of single particles. Here we implement a strong optical nonlinearity using electromagnetically-induced transparency and slow light, and directly measure the resulting nonlinear phase shift for individual photons. This is done by illuminating the sample with a weak classical pulse with as few as 0.5 photons per pulse on average, and using post-selection to determine whether a given pulse contained (approximately) 0 or 1 photons. We present clear data showing the quantized dependence of a probe beam's measured phase shift on the post-selection result, for a range of input pulse intensities. We believe that this represents the first direct measurement of the cross-phase shift due to single photons.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultrafast time-resolved measurement method operating at the single-photon level and employing a two-color comb-based asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) setup. We harnessed the two-color ASOPS photon counting approach to achieve long-term averaging of the ultralow intensity signal with a synchronized optical trigger signal, which minimizes residual timing jitter between the two combs. A pulse-width limited picosecond cross-correlation signal was successfully obtained with a power level of <1 photon/pulse. This approach enables the thorough study of ultrafast time-resolved detection of entangled photon pairs, quantum mechanical correlations in the time-frequency domain and finds wide use in optical quantum technology.

Abstract:We present a single-photon-sensitive spectrometer, based on a linear array of 512 single-photon avalanche diode detectors, with 0.04 nm spectral and 40 ps temporal resolutions. We employ a fast data-driven operation that allows direct measurement of time and frequency for simultaneous single photons, time- and frequency-stamping each single-photon detection. Our results combine excellent temporal and spectral resolution. We benchmark our result against the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle limit of hbar/2 for time and energy, and we are only a factor of 10 above it, despite the simplicity of our experimental setup, including room temperature operation. This work opens numerous applications in both classical and quantum photonics, especially when both spectral and temporal properties of single photons are exploited.

Abstract:Based on the Nd: YVO4 microchip laser frequency-shifted feedback system, we carry out the detection of ultra-weak light signals, and verify that the response limit of the proposed system can reach 0.5 photon per second (corresponding to 2.1 × 10−7 photon's energy per frequency modulation cycle of 0.42 μs), with approximately linear response to weak light. Then, the system is compared with the traditional Mach-Zehnder heterodyne interference system, the comparison results confirm the higher intensity response sensitivity of the laser feedback technology (about six orders of magnitude) when detecting both cooperative and non-cooperative targets. On this basis, a verification experiment is carried out on long-distance weak light imaging, and the “THU” pattern made of unpolished aluminum blocks is successfully reconstruct at 60 m distance (with an additional 10−7 attenuation provided by the neutral density filter added to the optical path). During the imaging process, the response energy as low as 2 × 10−5 photon is achieved in each frequency modulation cycle of 0.42 μs. The successful implementation of the laser frequency-shifted feedback detection enables an anti-disturbance and sensitive coherent method in weak light signals detection.

Abstract:Simultaneous slow and fast light can be realized all-optically by connecting a four-level closed-loop atom–light interaction scheme to Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency system. Through manipulation of the relative phase of one of the coupling lights, probe light can be switched among dual-slow light, dual-fast light and simultaneous slow and fast light. A theoretical analysis based on dressed state picture is given.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:We demonstrated a laser depth imaging system based on the time-correlated single-photon counting technique, which was incorporated with a low-jitter superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD), operated at the wavelength of 1550 nm. A sub-picosecond time-bin width was chosen for photon counting, resulting in a discrete noise of less than one/two counts for each time bin under indoor/outdoor daylight conditions, with a collection time of 50 ms. Because of the low-jitter SNSPD, the target signal histogram was significantly distinguishable, even for a fairly low retro-reflected photon flux. The depth information was determined directly by the highest bin counts, instead of using any data fitting combined with complex algorithms. Millimeter resolution depth imaging of a low-signature object was obtained, and more accurate data than that produced by the traditional Gaussian fitting method was generated. Combined with the intensity of the return photons, three-dimensional reconstruction overlaid with reflectivity data was realized.

Abstract:We report the experimental results of hybrid four-wave mixing and fluorescence signals from nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The fluorescence signals are slowed owing to dark state. The observed delay time of light slowing due to interconversion between NV- and NV0 is about 6.4 mu s. The relative intensities of read-out signals change with the wavelength and power of writing pulse. Based on light slowing, we present the model of all-optical time division multiplexing. The intensity ratio in different demultiplexed channels is modulated by the wavelength and power of control field. It has potential applications in quantum communication and all-optical network.

Abstract:We present undergraduate-friendly instructions on how to produce light pulses propagating through warm Rubidium vapor with speeds less than 400 m/s, i.e., nearly a million times slower than c. We elucidate the role played by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in producing slow light pulses, and discuss how to achieve the required experimental conditions. The optical set up is presented, and details provided for preparation of pump, probe, and reference pulses of the required size, frequency, intensity, temporal width, and polarization purity. EIT-based slow light pulses provide the most widely studied architecture for creating quantum memories. Therefore, the basic concepts presented here are useful for physics and engineering majors who wish to get involved in the development of cutting-edge quantum technologies.
