Abstract:We propose a novel scheme for slow light based on a resonant three-level lambda system (RTLS) in a p-doped semiconductor heterostructure. Numerical simulations show that a slow-down factor of 145 and a slow-down-bandwidth product exceeding 200 THz can be achieved in semiconductor quantum wells at room temperature. These figures of merit make the RTLS slow light especially useful for the enhancement of the optical nonlinearity in high bandwidth all-optical signal processing applications.

Abstract:We report experimental demonstration of fast light in an over-coupled ultra-compact silicon ring resonator with resonance-splitting. Strong mutual-coupling induced by the grating inside the ring leads to split resonances and accompanying large anomalous dispersion, thus providing a new approach to realizing fast light in the over-coupled region of the ring resonator. In the experiment, a maximum pulse advancement of 130 ps with low distortion is achieved for a 1-ns signal pulse in a 10-mu m-radius silicon ring resonator. The observed pulse advancement agrees well with the theoretical calculation based on coupled mode theory. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We theoretically present a highly efficient optical method to obtain slow and fast light in a coupled system consisting of a nanomechanical resonator and quantum dots in terms of mechanically induced coherent population oscillation (MICPO). Turning on or turning off the specific detuning of pump field from exciton resonance, this coupling system can provide us a direct optical way to obtain the slow or fast group velocity without absorption. Our coupling scheme proposed here works as a fast and slow-light knob and may have potential applications in various domains such as optical communication and biology sensor.
High-fidelity, broadband stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light using fast noise modulation

Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:Slow light is a fascinating physical effect, raising fundamental questions related to our understanding of light-matter interactions as well as offering new possibilities for photonic devices. From the first demonstrations of slow light propagation in ultra-cold atomic gasses, solid-state Ruby and photonic crystal structures, focus has shifted to applications, with slow light offering the ability to enhance and control light-matter interactions. The demonstration of tuneable delay lines, enhanced nonlinearities and spontaneous emission, enlarged spectral sensitivity and increased phase shifts illustrate the possibilities enabled by slow light propagation, with microwave photonics emerging as one of the promising applications. Here, we demonstrate that slow light can be used to control and increase the gain coefficient of an active semiconductor waveguide. The effect was theoretically predicted but not yet experimentally demonstrated. These results show a route towards realizing ultra-compact optical amplifiers for linear and nonlinear applications in integrated photonics and prompts further research into the rich physics of such structures.

Ultrafast slow-light: Raman-induced delay of THz-bandwidth pulses

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to generate optically-controlled delays based on off-resonant Raman absorption. Dispersion in a transparency window between two neighboring, optically-activated Raman absorption lines is used to reduce the group velocity of broadband 765 nm pulses. We implement this approach in a potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) waveguide at room temperature, and demonstrate Raman-induced delays of up to 140 fs for a 650-fs duration, 1.8-THz bandwidth, signal pulse; the available delay-bandwidth product is $\approx1$. Our approach is applicable to single photon signals, offers wavelength tunability, and is a step toward processing ultrafast photons.

Slow Light through Brillouin Scattering in Continuum Quantum Optomechanics

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of achieving a slow signal field at the level of single photons inside nanofibers by exploiting stimulated Brillouin scattering, which involves a strong pump field and the vibrational modes of the waveguide. The slow signal is significantly amplified for a pump field with a frequency higher than that of the signal, and attenuated for a lower pump frequency. We introduce a configuration for obtaining a propagating slow signal without gain or loss and with a relatively wide bandwidth. This process involves two strong pump fields with frequencies both higher and lower than that of the signal, where the effects of signal amplification and attenuation compensate each other. We account for thermal fluctuations due to the scattering off thermal phonons and identify conditions under which thermal contributions to the signal field are negligible. The slowing of light through Brillouin optomechanics may serve as a vital tool for optical quantum information processing and quantum communications within nanophotonic structures.

Abstract:We report a tunable slow and fast light device based on a carbon nanotube resonator, in the presence of a strong pump laser and a weak signal laser. Detailed analysis shows that the signal laser displays the superluminal and ultraslow light characteristics via passing through a suspended carbon nanotube resonator, while the incident pump laser is on- and off-resonant with the exciton frequency, respectively. In particular, the fast and slow light correspond to the negative and positive dispersion, respectively, associating with the vanished absorption. The bandwidth of the signal spectrum is determined by the vibration decay rate of carbon nanotube. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Summary form only given. Slow light has achieved great progress in waveguide and fibers in room temperature, which could be accelerating the transition of this technique to applications. This talk will review devising methods for tailoring the dispersion of optical materials, such as electromagnetically induced transparency, photonic crystals, and nano-optic resonators over the last decade. And the potential applications of slow light for optical buffering, data synchronization, optical memories, and optical signal processing will be cataloged. Then the interaction between slow light and Sagnac effect is discussed. The concept of the Sagnac effect in a slow-light medium and resonator structure with high group dispersion is investigated. It is found that a slow-light medium can be utilized for relative motion sensing, and a slow-light resonator structure is suitable to detect absolute rotation for navigation purposes. It is noted that the high group dispersion leads to a huge enhancement of the rotation sensor's sensitivity in a resonating structure, and an approach to evaluate and design resonator devices with slow-light property is proposed. Moreover, a folded loop-lattice-based structure is numerically simulated to verify the concept.

Abstract:This investigation experimentally demonstrates a tunable slow light device using a quantum dot (QD) semiconductor laser. The QD semiconductor laser at 1.3 mum fabricated on a GaAs substrate is grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Tunable slow light can be achieved by adjusting the bias current and wavelength detuning. The slow light device operated under probe signal from 5 to 10 GHz is presented. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the tunable slow light device can be used in a subcarrier multiplexed system.

Abstract:We propose a remarkably simple system of an all optical system that can be used to fast, slow, stop, and store light coherently. The proposed system consist two micro and a nanoring resonators that can be integrated into a single system, which can be used to overcome the problem of bandwidth delay constraints with small group velocities. The large bandwidth is generated by a soliton pulse within a Kerr type nonlinear medium where an all optical adiabatic and reversible pulse bandwidth compression can be performed. The balance between dispersion and nonlinear lengths of the soliton pulse exhibits the soliton behavior known as self‐phase modulation, which introduces the optical output (i.e., gain) constant, which means that light pulse can be trapped, that is, stopped coherently within the nanowaveguide. The time independent optical gain is stored within the nanoring device, which is available for read only memory use. The memory time of 1 ps is achieved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:We report the observations of spontaneous Raman scattering in silicon photonic crystal waveguides. Continuous-wave measurements of Stokes emission for both wavelength and power dependence is reported in single line-defect waveguides in hexagonal lattice photonic crystal silicon membranes. By utilizing the Bragg gap edge dispersion of the TM-like mode for pump enhancement and the TE-like fundamental mode-onset for Stokes enhancement, the Stokes emission was observed to increase by up to five times in the region of slow group velocity. The results show explicit nonlinear enhancement in a silicon photonic crystal slow-light waveguide device.

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that tunable slow light can be realized in planar semiconductor metamaterials with the unit cell composed of two different elements in a broad terahertz regime. In the unit cell, one element is a semiconductor split ring resonator and another one is a semiconductor cut wire. The interaction between the two elements of the unit cell, induced directly or indirectly by the incident electromagnetic wave, leads to a transparent window, resembling the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency. This transparent window, caused by the coupling of bright-bright modes or dark-bright modes, can be continuously tuned in a broad frequency regime. The strong normal phase dispersion in the vicinity of this transparent window results in the slow light effect. This scheme provides an alternative way to achieve tunable slow light in a broad frequency band and can find important applications in active and reversibly tunable slow light devices. Abstract:We present our recent work on silicon resonance and slow-light based devices for optical signal processing. Waveguide self-coupling and mutual coupling are used to tailor the waveguide spectral and dispersion characteristics. With self-coupling, optical resonances are generated with unique transmission performances. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect appears in cascaded self-coupled waveguides. With mutual coupling between ridge and slot waveguides, group velocity experiences a big jump and optical signal can be delayed for a large range with low distortion by using thermo-optic tuning.

Abstract:We present a microresonator-based system capable of simultaneously producing time-advanced and time-delayed pulses. The effect is based on the combination of a sharp spectral feature with two orthogonally-polarized propagating waveguide modes. We include an experimental proof-of-concept implementation using a silica microsphere coupled to a tapered optical fiber and use a time-domain picture to interpret the observed delays. We also discuss potential applications for future all-optical networks.

Abstract:A one-dimensional photonic crystal racetrack ring resonator coupling with an optimized bus waveguide on a silicon-on-insulator wafer is proposed and demonstrated. The nonuniform free spectral range is realized in the resonator. A maximum group index of 37.6 and a slowdown factor of 11 are obtained. The nonuniform free spectral range and large group index are attributed to the slow-light effect near the band edge of the one-dimensional photonic crystal. A three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method is performed to simulate the resonator. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental results. The photonic crystal racetrack ring resonator demonstrated here will be beneficial for channel drop filters, wavelength-division multiplexing, lasers, and other applications.

Abstract:Usually, the pump light in lasers should perform fast light owing to operating in the absorption band. In this study, we observe and demonstrate anomalous slowdown of the pump light in a Raman fiber laser. Experiments show that the pump light can be slowed down to sub-nanoseconds at a repetition rate of 50-500 MHz. Theoretical analysis shows that the hole-burning effect is formed at the Raman gain spectrum in the saturation regime, which imposes on the pump light by normal dispersion. Consequently, the pump light experiences an unusual slow light effect rather than the fast light effect after absorption. We believe it has promising potentials in the improvement of ultrashort pulse generation, and may have significant influence on improving the conversion efficiency in pulse-pumped laser systems.
