Abstract:Broadband photon detectors are a key enabling technology for various applications such as spectrometers, light detection and ranging. In this work, we report on an ultra-broadband single-photon detector based on a microfiber (MF)-coupled superconducting nanowires structure operating in the spectral range from visible to near-infrared light. The MF-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) is formed by placing an MF on top of superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) nanowires, allowing ultra-broadband photon detection due to their nearly lossless transmission/absorption and nearly unity internal efficiency for ultra-broad waveband. The simulation results indicate that with optimal device structure, the optical absorption with efficiency > 90% can be realized over a wavelength range of 350 nm to 2150 nm. The fabricated MF-coupled SNSPD shows unparalleled broadband system detection efficiencies (SDEs) of more than 50% from 630 nm to 1500 nm. The SDEs reach 66% at 785 nm and 45% at 1550 nm. These results pave the way for ultra-broadband weak light detection with quantum-limit sensitivity.

Abstract:A multi-functional single-photon detector was demonstrated to resolve photon states by multiple superconductor single photon detectors (SSPDs) system with improved readout settings. The photon number and space distribution were resolved simultaneously by the presented system, which inherits the merits of SSPD, such as wide-response band, high repetition rate and working stability. Experimentally, four photons were resolved and the photon distribution over three pixels was figured out according to the amplitudes of output pulses at the telecommunication wavelength. The extension of this proposal to incorporate more elements for resolving more photons and revealing photons spatial distribution over larger scale is also discussed.

Abstract:Coincidence detection of single photons is crucial in numerous quantum technologies and usually requires multiple time-resolved single-photon detectors. However, the electronic readout becomes a major challenge when the measurement basis scales to large numbers of spatial modes. Here, we address this problem by introducing a two-terminal coincidence detector that enables scalable readout of an array of detector segments based on superconducting nanowire microstrip transmission line. Exploiting timing logic, we demonstrate a 16-element detector that resolves all 136 possible single-photon and two-photon coincidence events. We further explore the pulse shapes of the detector output and resolve up to four-photon coincidence events in a 4-element device, giving the detector photon-number-resolving capability. This new detector architecture and operating scheme will be particularly useful for multi-photon coincidence detection in large-scale photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A series superconducting nanowire single-photon detector is a high performance nanowire array detector that has the potential to reach a high system detection efficiency (SQE), a high counting rate (CR) and photon number resolving functionality. Interconnected with a simplified readout, it shows promise for large scale expansion and has good prospects for future applications in single-photon imaging, quantum optics, quantum computing and deep-space communication. In this paper, we demonstrate a high SQE and CR series superconducting nanowire single-photon detector with an active area of 20 x 20 mu m(2). The detector shows a maximum SQE of 68% at 1550 nm with a dark count rate of 200 Hz and a wide response wavelength from 1100-2000 nm. It also achieves a CR over 300 MHz at single photon power level and has the capability of resolving photon numbers by up to six photons.

Abstract:We present and theoretically analyse the performance of an innovative non-local superconducting single-photon detector. The device operates thanks to the energy-to-phase conversion mechanism, where the energy of the absorbed single-photon is transformed in a variation of the superconducting phase. To this scope, the detector is designed in the form of a double-loop superconductor/normal metal/superconductors (SNS) Josephson interferometer, where the detection occurs in a long SNS junction and the read-out is operated by a short SNS junction. The variation of the superconducting phase across the read-out junction is measured by recording the quasiparticle current flowing through a tunnel coupled superconducting probe. By exploiting realistic geometry and materials, the detector is able to reveal single-photons of frequency down to 10 GHz when operated at 10 mK. Furthermore, the device provides value of signal-to-noise ratio up 10^4 in the range 10 GHz-10 THz by selecting the magnetic flux and the bias voltage. This device can find direct applications as single-photon detector in both basic science and quantum technology, while the energy-to-phase conversion mechanism can be at the basis of non-local read-out and memory architectures for superconducting qubits.

Abstract:Numerous applications at the photon-starved regime require a free-space coupling singlephoton detector with a large active area, low dark count rate (DCR), and superior time resolutions. Here,we developed a superconducting microstrip single-photon detector (SMSPD), with a large active area of 260 um in diameter, a DCR of ~5 kcps, and a low time jitter of ~171 ps, operated at near-infrared of 1550 nm. As a demonstration, we applied the detector to a single-pixel galvanometer scanning system and successfully reconstructed object information in depth and intensity using a time-correlated photon counting technology.

Abstract:We designed, fabricated, and tested a one-dimensional array of superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors, integrated with on-chip inductors and resistors. The architecture is suitable for monolithic integration on a single chip operated in a cryogenic environment, and inherits the characteristics of individual superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors. We demonstrated a working array with four pixels showing position discrimination and a timing jitter of 124 ps. The electronic crosstalk between the pixels in the array was negligible.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report on a device with which to resolve photon numbers and positions simultaneously, using single-channel readout from superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). The nanowires in the SNSPDs are connected in series with parallel resistors for producing response pulses with different amplitudes, whose values obey a distribution of 1:2:4:,..,2 n-1 . In single-photon detection, a saturated counting rate is obtained at a low dark count rate (<10 cps). Furthermore, we observed 16 output modes corresponding one-to-one with 16 states (15 photon responses + 1 state without photons) in multiphoton mode. This structure not only inherits the advantages of high quantum efficiency and low dark count rate of traditional SNSPD, but also realizes the resolution of photon position and number simultaneously without complicated optical system. Thus, this proposal offers a promising platform for realizing scalable and practical quantum information chips.

Abstract:A new photon-number-resolving superconducting single photon detector is fabricated and tested. To integrate the resistors connected to the nanowire, we used one step of electron-beam lithography and four subsequent photolithography steps. A micro cavity was introduced to the structure in order to gain relatively high quantum efficiency. The device fabricated could resolve 6 photons.

Abstract:The detection of individual quanta of light is important for quantum communication, fluorescence lifetime imaging, remote sensing and more. Due to their high detection efficiency, exceptional signal-to-noise ratio and fast recovery times, superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have become a critical component in these applications. However, the operation of conventional SNSPDs requires costly cryocoolers. Here we report the fabrication of two types of high-temperature superconducting nanowires. We observe linear scaling of the photon count rate on the radiation power at the telecommunications wavelength of 1.5 μm and thereby reveal single-photon operation. SNSPDs made from thin flakes of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ exhibit a single-photon response up to 25 K, and for SNSPDs from La1.55Sr0.45CuO4/La2CuO4 bilayer films, this response is observed up to 8 K. While the underlying detection mechanism is not fully understood yet, our work expands the family of materials for SNSPD technology beyond the liquid helium temperature limit and suggests that even higher operation temperatures may be reached using other high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:We report a compact, scalable, and high-performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) array by using a multichannel optical fiber array-coupled configuration. For single pixels with an active area of 18 um in diameter and illuminated at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm, we achieved a pixel yield of 13/16 on one chip, an average system detection efficiency of 69% at a dark count rate of 160 cps, a minimum timing jitter of 74 ps, and a maximum count rate of ~40 Mcps. The optical crosstalk coefficient between adjacent channels is better than -60 dB. The performance of the fiber array-coupled detectors is comparable with a standalone detector coupled to a single fiber. Our method is promising for the development of scalable, high-performance, and high-yield SNSPDs.

Abstract:We applied superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors to photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR). The setup was optimized to minimize the timing jitter of the photon detections to 42 ps. Therefore, we achieved a spatial resolution of 4 mm in our OTDR system. Based on the super high spatial resolution, we observed the reflection from a small fiber coil and see the peak width spread.

Abstract:Detecting spatial and temporal information of individual photons is critical to applications in spectroscopy, communication, biological imaging, astronomical observation and quantum-information processing. Here we demonstrate a scalable single-photon imager using a single continuous superconducting nanowire that is not only a single-photon detector but also functions as an efficient microwave delay line. In this context, photon-detection pulses are guided in the nanowire and enable the readout of the position and time of photon-absorption events from the arrival times of the detection pulses at the nanowire's two ends. Experimentally, we slowed down the velocity of pulse propagation to ∼2% of the speed of light in free space. In a 19.7 mm long nanowire that meandered across an area of 286 × 193 μm 2 , we were able to resolve ∼590 effective pixels with a temporal resolution of 50 ps (full width at half maximum). The nanowire imager presents a scalable approach for high-resolution photon imaging in space and time.

Abstract:Single-photon imaging is a technology that detects the spatial and temporal information carried by each photon to reconstruct an object image. Single-photon detectors based on superconducting nanowires have the advantages of high efficiency, low time jitter, and wide response spectrum, which is suitable for single-photon imaging applications. The superconducting nanowire delay-line single-photon imager is a novel single-photon imager. It utilizes the high kinetic inductance of the superconducting nanowires to build an ultraslow microwave transmission line. The arrival time and spatial position of photons can be simultaneously measured by reading the arrival times of the output pulses. This study introduces the design principle, geometry structure, and readout method of this imager. Besides, we introduce a single-photon imaging experiment in presence of strong background noise to demonstrate the performance enhancement using the joint optimization of high-performance imaging devices and reconstruction algorithms.

Abstract:We use dispersion engineering to control the signal propagation speed in the feed lines of superconducting single-photon detectors. Using this technique, we demonstrate time-division-multiplexing of two-pixel detectors connected with a slow-RF transmission line, all realized using planar geometry requiring a single lithographic step. Through studying the arrival time of detection events in each pixel vs the fabricated slow-RF coplanar waveguide length, we extract a delay of 1.7 ps per 1 <i>μ</i>m of propagation, corresponding to detection signal speeds of ∼0.0019<i>c</i>. Our results open an important avenue to explore the rich ideas of dispersion engineering and metamaterials for superconducting detector applications.

Abstract:Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have enabled the realization of several quantum optics technologies thanks to their high system detection efficiency (SDE), low dark counts, and fast recovery time. However, the widespread use of linear optical quantum computing, quasi-deterministic single-photon sources, and quantum repeaters requires even faster detectors that can also distinguish between different photon-number states. Here, we present an SNSPD array composed of 14 independent pixels, achieving an SDE of 90% in the telecommunications band. By reading each pixel of the array independently, we show detection of telecommunication photons at 1.5 GHz with 45% absolute SDE. We exploit the dynamic photon-number resolution of the array to demonstrate accurate state reconstruction for a wide range of light inputs, including operation with long-duration light pulses, as obtained with some cavity-based sources. We show two-photon and three-photon fidelities of 74% and 57%, respectively, which represent state-of-the-art results for fiber-coupled SNSPDs.

Abstract:Superconducting nanowires enable the operation of outstanding single-photon detectors, which are required particularly for quantum information and weak-light measurement applications. However, the trade-off between detection speed and efficiency, which is related to the filling factors of superconducting nanowires, is still a challenge. Here, we propose a fast, efficient single-photon detector fabricated by integrating ultralow-filling-factor meandered superconducting nanowires atop a photonic crystal (PhC) resonator. This unique structure enables a fast photon response due to the low kinetic inductance of the short nanowires and ensures efficient photon absorption due to the resonant effect of the PhC structure. The proposed detector has a filling factor of only ∼12 % while maintaining a high maximum absorption in our simulation of 90%. The fabricated device exhibits a maximum system detection efficiency of 60%, a maximum count rate of ∼80 MHz, and a recovery time of only ∼12 ns, which is three times faster than that of the conventional meandered structure at the same sensing diameter (18 μm). This work helps advance the movement toward high-efficiency, high-speed single-photon detectors and promotes their future application in quantum communication and imaging.

Abstract:Classical and quantum space-to-ground communications necessitate highly sensitive receivers capable of extracting information from modulated photons to extend the communication distance from near-earth orbits to deep space explorations. To achieve gigabit data rates while mitigating strong background noise photons and beam drift in a highly attenuated free-space channel, a comprehensive design of a multi-functional detector is indispensable. In this study, we present an innovative compact multi-pixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detector array that integrates near-unity detection efficiency (91.6%), high photon counting rate (1.61 Gcps), large dynamic range for resolving different photon numbers (1–24), and four-quadrant position sensing function all within one device. Furthermore, we have constructed a communication testbed to validate the advantages offered by such an architecture. Through 8-PPM (pulse position modulation) format communication experiments, we have achieved an impressive maximum data rate of 1.5 Gbps, demonstrating sensitivities surpassing previous benchmarks at respective speeds. By incorporating photon number information into error correction codes, the receiver can tolerate maximum background noise levels equivalent to 0.8 photons/slot at a data rate of 120 Mbps—showcasing a great potential for daylight operation scenarios. Additionally, preliminary beam tracking tests were conducted through open-loop scanning techniques, which revealed clear quantitative dependence indicating sensitivity variations based on beam location. Based on the device characterizations and communication results, we anticipate that this device architecture, along with its corresponding signal processing and coding techniques, will be applicable in future space-to-ground communication tasks.

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) at a wavelength of 2000 nm. We use numerical simulations to optimize the parameters of the device structure. Guided by the obtained numerical results, we fabricated and measured the device that operates at 2000 nm at 2.3K. The results indicate that our device responses well in 2000nm with a dark count rate of 100Hz. The recovering time is 100ns.

Abstract:Superconductor-semiconductor hybrid devices can bridge the gap between solid-state-based and photonics-based quantum systems, enabling new hybrid computing schemes, offering increased scalability and robustness. One example for a hybrid device is the superconducting light-emitting diode (SLED). SLEDs have been theoretically shown to emit polarization-entangled photon pairs by utilizing radiative recombination of Cooper pairs. However, the two-photon nature of the emission has not been shown experimentally before. We demonstrate two-photon emission in a GaAs/AlGaAs SLED. Measured electroluminescence spectra reveal unique two-photon superconducting features below the critical temperature ( T c ), while temperature-dependent photon-pair correlation experiments ( g (2) ( τ , T )) demonstrate temperature-dependent time coincidences below T c between photons emitted from the SLED. Our results pave the way for compact and efficient superconducting quantum light sources and open new directions in light-matter interaction studies.
