Abstract:Maximum fixing efficiency of thermal fixing in LiNbO3:Fe crystal is investigated. Based on Kukhtarev's band transport model and Kogenlik's theory, the mechanisms leading a high diffraction fixed hologram in LiNbO3: Fe crystal is analyzed. To obtain a volume grating with the maximum fixed diffraction efficiency, the optimal switching from recording step to thermal fixing is taken into consideration. With the same oxidation state and dopant concentration, the developed efficiency for low light intensity depended on the recording wavelength. Holographic gratings are recorded using three typical recording wavelengths including 488nm, 514nm, and 633nm respectively. The fixed holograms are developed by original recording setup. Diffraction efficiencies of recording and thermal fixing are measured by two-wave coupling technique. Both experimental results and theoretical simulation are presented. Through the theoretical and experimental results analyzed and compared, the blue beam was the optimal recording wavelength for maximum fixing efficiency of thermal fixing in LiNbO3:Fe. This work can obtain high persistent diffraction of the nonvolatile holographic storage in LiNbO3:Fe crystals.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Co2FeSi Heusler alloy films were deposited on single crystal lead zinc niobate-lead titanate substrates. It is revealed that this multiferroic composite exhibits very strong continuously electric field (E-field) tunable microwave frequency characteristics. With an increase of the E-field intensity from 0 to 6 kV/cm, the ferromagnetic resonance field H-r shifts by 348 Oe along the easy axis direction, being equivalent to 58 Oe cm/kV, and the ferromagnetic resonance frequency f(FMR) dramatically increases from 2.2 to 6.1 GHz with an increment of 3.9 GHz or an increment ratio of 177%; moreover, the damping constant alpha decreases from 0.0150 to 0.0085. These features demonstrate that this multiferroic structure is promising in the fabrication of E-field tunable microwave components. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi: 10.1063/1.3670979]
Blue Optimization Exponential Gain Of Sc:Mn:Fe:Linbo3 Crystals With Various Li/Nb Ratios

Abstract:Doped with 0.1wt%MnCO3, 0.05wt%, Fe2O3 1mol% Sc2O3 and various Li/Nb ratios(0.94, 1.05, 1.20, 1.40) in LiNbO3 Sc:Mn:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals by Czochralski technique. The in frayed spectra of crystals were measured, the structure of crystals and occupancy site of ions were researched. The shifting mechanism of OH- absorption peak were discussed. The using Kr+ ion Laser as high source, the exponential gain coefficient and response time were measured. The blue exponential gain coefficient are higher one time than that: of red exponential gain coefficient, response time shorten to 1/10. The exponential gain coefficient with Li/Nb rations increase but increase. Response time with Li/Nb ration increase but decrease. The photorefractive properties of but LiNbO3 Sc:Mn:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals preferable to 532nm and 632.8nm.

Abstract:Doped with 2%(in mole) Zn,0.1% (in mass,the same below) Ce and 0.03% Fe and various mole ratios n(Li)/n(Nb) = 0.94,1.10,1.25,and 1.40 of LiNbO3,Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. Using two wave coupling optical paths,the exponential gain coefficient of the crystals was measured. With n(Li)/n(Nb) increasing,the exponential gain coefficient of Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals increased. Using four wave mixing optical paths,the phase conjugate properties of the crystals were measured. As n(Li)/n(Nb) increasing,the phase conjugate reflectivity and response speed increase. The study of the temperature effect on Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals at 55,70 ℃ and 110 ℃ find that the exponential gain coefficient and phase conjugate reflectivity increase,implied by the peak intensity increasing in exponential gain coefficient–temperature (Γ–T) curve and phase conjugate reflectivity–temperature (R–T) curve. The photorefractive properties of Zn:Ce:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals at abnormal temperature is discussed based on the phase structure change.

Abstract:Two-beam coupling gain coefficients of transmission and reflection gratings in BaTiO3:Ce crystals versus wavelength between 570 and 680 nm have been measured. The former decreases more quickly than predicted by theory. The latter was found to vary significantly with wavelength, while theory shows that it should vary little. In order to explain the experimental results we assumed that the effective carrier number density Neff depends on wavelength. By calculating Neff from the measured results we found that Neff is approximately a linearly decreasing function of wavelength. The slopes and intercepts for the linear functions are given for the two crystals studied.

Abstract:Near-stoichiometric LiNbO3 single crystal tri-doped with ZrO2, MnO and Fe2O3 was grown from Li-riched melt by Czochralski method. The defect structures and composition of these crystals were analyzed by means of ultraviolet-visible and infrared transmittance spectra. The appearance of 3466 cm(-1) peak in infrared spectra showed that the crystal grown from Li-riched melt was near stoichiometric. The photorefractive properties at the wavelength of 488 nm and 633 nm were investigated with two-beam coupling experiment, respectively. The experimental results showed that the response speed and sensitivity were enhanced significantly and the high diffraction efficiency was obtained at 488 nm wavelength. This manifested that near-stoichiometric LiNbO3:Mn:Fe:Zr crystal was an excellent candidate for holographic storage. (C) 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Abstract:A LiNbO3(:Fe) or LiTaO3 film is sandwiched between a (012)-oriented α-sapphire wafer and an amorphous Al2O3 or SiO2 film using pulsed laser deposition. After annealing at 1000 °C in O2, the film becomes a c-oriented single-domain ferroelectric. This sandwich structure shows an enhanced photoluminescence from trace amounts of Cr3+ centers in the host α-sapphire (R-line emission at 691 nm). Spectral analyses suggest that both strong space-charge and photorefractive effects of the LiNbO3(:Fe) or LiTaO3 film cause a change in the crystal field of the host α-sapphire, which increases the transition probability of Cr3+ and thus leads to an enhancement of the R-line intensity. The result has prospective applications in laser and optical integrated devices.

Abstract:In this paper, Zr:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals with various Li/Nb ratios were grown by the Czochralski method from melts having compositions varying between 48.6 and 58mol% Li2O. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission/mass spectrometry (ICP-OE/MS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption and the infrared (IR) spectrum were measured and are discussed in terms of the spectroscopic characterization. It was found that as the Li/Nb ratio increases in the melt, the Li/Nb ratio in the crystal also increases, the distribution coefficients of Fe and Zr ions decrease, the absorption edge shifts to a shorter wavelength, and the ZrO2 threshold concentration of the samples decreases.

Abstract:Using the Czochralski method we have grown LiNbO3 crystals with periodic laminar ferroelectric domains whose half-period nearly corresponds to the coherence length. Quasi-phase-matching for the nonlinear optical coefficient d33 has been approximately realized and enhancement of second-harmonic generation relative to conventionally phase-matched crystals of the same length has been observed.

Abstract:Cs2LiLa0.1Y0.9Cl6:Ce crystals with the dopant concentration from 0.2 to 5 mol% have been successfully grown by the vertical Bridgman method to optimize the scintillation properties for thermal neutron detection. The effects of Ce3+ concentration on the crystal structure, luminescence and scintillation properties were systematically investigated. The PXRD patterns verified the purity of phase and the cubic crystal system with the space group of Fm (3) over barm. The Cs2LiLa0.1Y0.9Cl6 crystals doped with low Ce3+ concentration can achieve more than 60% transmittance. In this paper, we introduce successful efforts to grow crack-free single crystals with the size up to 01 '' x 5 ''. The large-size single crystal obtained a decent energy resolution of 5.3% at 662 keV. The figure of merit (FOM) for this scintillator under Cf-252 reached 1.82, indicating a good discrimination between neutron and gamma.

Abstract:Ce:LiNbO3 (Ce:LN) crystals were grown from melts with different [Li]/[Nb] (0.75, 0.85, 0.946, 1.05, 1.10, 1.38) ratios by using the top seed crystal method, while the concentration of Ce was 0.1 mol%. Spectra of Ce-doped LiNbO3 samples were measured by the Raman spectrum method. The results showed that the Raman peak at 870 cm−1 can only be observed in the case of [Li]/[Nb] of 1.38. Meanwhile, the peaks at 631 cm−1 and 249–252 cm−1 all disappeared compared with other ratios of [Li]/[Nb]. It is also found that the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 151 cm−1 which can be used to scale the content of Li ion becomes narrow with increase of [Li]/[Nb]. In order to investigate the crystal structure, we have attributed the Raman peaks appearing in the spectra to the corresponding vibration mode. The quantitative relationship between the FWHM of E(TO1) and the [Li]/[Nb] ratio in the crystal or the melt was revealed on the basis of the composition of each element in Ce-doped LiNbO3 samples measured by ICP-MS, and of the traditional empirical formula which describes the relationship between the FWHM of E(TO1) and the [Li]/[Nb] ratio for undoped LiNbO3 crystals. The results showed that the quantitative relationship between the FWHM of E(TO1) and [Li]/[Nb] (y) in the crystal is .

Abstract:LiNbO3 has been found attractive for lateral field excitation (LFE) applications due to its high piezoelectric coupling. In this paper, bulk acoustic wave propagation properties for LiNbO3 single crystal excited by a lateral electirc field have been investigated using the extended Christoffel-Bechmann method. It is found that the LFE piezoelectric coupling factor of c mode reaches its maximum value of 95.46% when psi - 0 degrees for both (yxl)-58 degrees and (yxwl)+/- 60 degrees/58 degrees LiNbO3. The acoustic wave phase velocity of c mode TSM (thickness shear mode) changes from 3456 m/s to 3983 m/s as a function of psi. Here psi represents the angle between the lateral electric field and the crystallographic X-axis in the substrate major surface. A 5 MHz LFE device of (yxl)-58 degrees LiNbO3 with psi = 0 degrees was designed and tested in air. A major resonance peak was observed with the motional resistance as low as 17 Omega and the Q-factor value up to 10353. The test result is well in agreement with the theoretical analysis, and suggests that the LFE LiNbO3 device can be a good platform for high performance resonator or sensor applications.

Abstract:A record level of spatial-averaged internal net gain larger than 300 dB/cm is demonstrated at 1532 nm from a single-crystal Erbium Chloride Silicate nanowire. Signal enhancement at small signal regime was resolved along the entire nanowire. Pump power dependence of gain saturation are studied.

Abstract:Sc:Er:LiNbO3 crystals have been grown by Czochralski method. Their infrared (IR) transmission spectra were measured and discussed to investigate defect structure. Optical damage resistance of Sc:Er:LiNbO3 crystals was characterized by changes in the photoinduced birefringence as well as the transmitted beam pattern distortion method. It remarkably increases when the concentration of Sc2O3 exceeds a threshold. The optical damage resistance of Sc (3.0mol%):Er:LiNbO3 is much higher than that of Er:LiNbO3. The threshold value of Sc3+ in Sc:Er:LiNbO3 crystals is below 1.714mol%. Intrinsic and extrinsic defects are discussed to explain the threshold effect in Sc:Er:LiNbO3 crystals.

Abstract:The growth of high-quality and large-size cerium-doped lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (Ce:(LuY)2SiO5, Ce:LYSO) crystals with lower cost has great influence on its applications in various physical devices. According to the chemical bonding theory of single crystal growth, the fast thermodynamic growth direction of Ce:LYSO is [010] direction. In this work, the maximum pulling rate of 3.5 mm/h was obtained along [010] direction of Ce:LYSO via the Czochralski (Cz) method. Finally, Ce:LYSO bulk single crystals with diameter of 64 mm and length of 220 mm and weight of 4.2 kg were grown. The luminescence performance of low-doped Ce:LYSO for nuclear irradiation (22Na) detector device was studied. Light yield of 26193 ph/MeV and decay time of 38 ns were obtained. Abstract:Polymer-based waveguide amplifiers are essential components in integrated optical systems, as their gain bandwidths directly determine the operating wavelength of optical circuits. However, development of the wideband gain media has been challenging, making it difficult to fabricate devices with broadband amplification capability. Rare earth ion-doped nanoparticles (NPs) are a key component in the gain media, and their full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the emission peak decides the final gain bandwidth of the gain media. Here, KMnF3: Yb, Er, Ce@KMnF3: Yb NPs with the broad full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the emission peak covering the S+C band was prepared. The NPs were synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and the FWHM of the emission peak of NPs reached 76 nm under the excitation of a 980 nm laser. The introduction of Ce3+ ions and a core-shell structure coating greatly enhanced the emission intensity of NPs at C band. Since KMnF3: Yb, Er, Ce@KMnF3: Yb NPs have exceptional broadband luminescence properties at C band, KMnF3: Yb, Er, Ce@KMnF3: Yb NPs can be the potential gain medium in the future polymer-based waveguide amplifiers.

Abstract:We investigate the absorption and photorefractive properties of Ce:BaTiO3 (cerium doped barium titanate) crystals. The absorption coefficient, electro-optic gain coefficient, and total effective trap density at wavelength 514.5 nm increase systematically with cerium doping concentration. The absorption and the electro-optic gain coefficients exhibit a dependence on the optical intensity. This indicates that there are at least two active photorefractive species. One of these crystals has the highest beam-coupling gain coefficient reported to date, γ=8.06 cm−1 for ordinarily polarized light. The response time of as-grown Ce:BaTiO3 with 15 ppm cerium is 220 ms at an intensity of 800 mW/cm2.

Abstract:Transparent glass ceramics containing Li2ZnSiO4: Cr4+ nanocrystals are prepared and their optical properties are investigated. The glass ceramics show intense broadband infrared luminescence and long fluorescence lifetime of about 90 mu s. The single-pass optical amplification is demonstrated on a traditional two-wave mixing configuration. The optical gain efficiency is about 1.27 cm(-1) when the excitation power is 0.80 W. The optical gain shows the similar wavelength dependence with luminescence properties. The transparent glass ceramics containing Li2ZnSiO4:Cr4+ nanocrystals have potential application as broadband gain media in optical communication system. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics.
